I Love Her Because She’s Dim-Witted And Filthy Rich - Chapter 50
Duan Bainian’s heart skipped a beat.
It was already past ten o’clock. She really couldn’t feel at ease knowing Su Miao was out there alone like that.
She hurriedly placed a call, but after waiting for a long time, no one picked up.
Duan Bainian said anxiously, “She said she had something to do and had to leave, why didn’t you see her off? It takes dozens of minutes to get to the train station from here by taxi. And it’s the middle of the night—didn’t it occur to you that leaving at this hour isn’t normal?”
Guan Jing explained, “I asked her. I asked why she was leaving so suddenly at this hour and if it wouldn’t be better to wait until tomorrow morning. She said the film crew called her back urgently. I offered to drive her, but she said she had already called a car on her phone.”
Seeing her artist’s expression getting worse and worse, Guan Jing added, “How about we go out and look for her now?”
Duan Bainian turned and walked out. “Let’s go look.”
The two of them drove along the main road all the way to the train station, but they didn’t see her at all.
Duan Bainian was filled with regret. News stories she had seen before about female passengers being harmed in Didi rides flashed through her mind. Her heart grew even more panicked.
On the way, she made a dozen consecutive calls, but none were answered. Just as they arrived at the train station in a panic and Duan Bainian was about to call again, Su Miao called back.
She answered immediately. “Where are you?”
Su Miao’s voice sounded muffled. “I’m on the train. I just got on.”
Duan Bainian instinctively looked at the departures that were about to leave. “Did you buy a ticket to Shanghai?”
Su Miao gave a hum of affirmation.
Duan Bainian was exasperated. “Why did you buy a ticket to Shanghai? Isn’t your filming location at the Chengde Mountain Resort? Why aren’t you going back to Beijing?”
“There are no more trains to Beijing at this hour. I’m going to Shanghai to transfer back to Beijing.”
Duan Bainian said, “Get off the train right now. If you really want to leave, wait until tomorrow morning.”
Su Miao sniffled. “Forget it, I’m not getting off. The train leaves in two minutes.”
Su Miao’s rare stubbornness left Duan Bainian feeling uncertain. After a moment of silence, she compromised. “Then remember to send me messages along the way. Tell me when you get to Shanghai and when you get to Beijing.”
Su Miao hummed in agreement.
The phone went silent, save for the crackling sound of static over the line.
After a long while, Duan Bainian said softly, “It’s good that you’re going back. I have a lot of troublesome things to deal with these few days; it’s making me feel overwhelmed. Once I finish what’s on my plate, I’ll go see you.”
Su Miao: “Okay.”
Duan Bainian breathed a sigh of relief. “Alright then, I’m hanging up. Remember to send me your location at all times.”
Seeing Su Miao return early in the morning, An Qiu was greatly surprised. “Didn’t you take leave until tomorrow? Why are you back today?”
Su Miao rubbed her sore eyes. “Some things happened over the last two days, so I came back early.”
An Qiu remembered the trending topics from a couple of days ago and figured it was related to that.
She shook Su Miao’s arm. “Don’t think too much about it. After we finish work tonight, I’ll treat you to something delicious.”
At night, the two of them went to their usual spot.
After hearing Su Miao explain the general gist of what happened over the past two days, An Qiu said indignantly, “Isn’t Duan Bainian just a ‘Green Tea Bitch’? She doesn’t take initiative, doesn’t refuse, and doesn’t take responsibility—just waiting for the willing to take the bait.”
Su Miao’s movements with her chopsticks paused. “Don’t talk nonsense.”
An Qiu retorted, “How am I talking nonsense? I’m not saying pure friendship can’t exist between men and women. But with men who have already pursued her, can there still be a pure friendship? Is she joking?”
Su Miao went silent.
She felt the same way, but Duan Bainian always said she was just overthinking.
The more An Qiu spoke, the more she felt it wasn’t worth it for Su Miao. “She can’t just bully you like this just because she knows you like her. If my girlfriend kept in touch with people who used to pursue her, I’d break up in a heartbeat. This clearly means she doesn’t like you enough!”
Su Miao couldn’t help but defend Duan Bainian. “She’s usually very good to me. Yesterday she even told me that once she finishes her troublesome business, she’ll come to see me.”
An Qiu looked at her like she was a lost cause. “You call that liking you? If she comes to see you, are you just going to make up with her? Clearly, she’s the one in the wrong, yet she has the nerve to lose her temper at you? When she comes to find you, you absolutely cannot just make up with her. You have to give her the cold shoulder, you know? You have to let her know that she isn’t your only option.”
Su Miao whispered, “But she is my only option.”
An Qiu almost fainted from anger. “Even if she is, you can’t show it! If she discovers she has you wrapped around her finger, she’ll treat you even worse in the future.”
Su Miao stopped talking. Her mind was a complete mess.
One moment she felt An Qiu made a lot of sense, the next she felt An Qiu was talking nonsense.
A little over a week later, Duan Bainian’s filming wrapped up. She told Su Miao she was coming to see her.
When An Qiu heard the news that Duan Bainian was coming, she gave Su Miao another “preventative shot.” “You better show some backbone, Su Miao. Don’t let her coax you back with just a few words. You must give her the cold shoulder. Think about it—all these pursuers of hers can become ‘friends,’ and she’s so beautiful; how many more of these friends will there be in the future? Every time there’s one, you’ll be miserable. If this keeps up, I think you’ll lose thirty years of your life.”
When Duan Bainian arrived at the film set, what she saw was Su Miao chatting and laughing while eating with a beautiful girl.
She walked forward with a smile and called out, “Su Miao.”
Su Miao gave a hum but didn’t speak.
Duan Bainian sat down beside Su Miao of her own accord and greeted the beautiful girl opposite them. “Hello, An Qiu. I’m Duan Bainian.”
An Qiu sized up Duan Bainian without any restraint. “So you’re that girlfriend who lost her temper at Su Miao?”
Duan Bainian was slightly surprised. “Did Su Miao mention me?”
An Qiu said with a smile, “She’s done more than just mention you; she talks about you whenever she has the chance. She talks about your pile of pursuers and how capable you are, being able to turn every pursuer into a friend. And what a coincidence—I’ve been pursuing Su Miao lately. Originally, Su Miao rejected me, but when I heard about this, I thought, ‘No need to rush the rejection, wouldn’t being friends be quite nice too?’ Who knows, maybe one day I’ll get a promotion to ‘official,’ right?”
Listening to An Qiu’s sarcasm, Duan Bainian still maintained a gentle smile. “You must be joking. Su Miao wouldn’t do such a thing.”
An Qiu blinked and said to Su Miao, “Did you hear that, Su Miao? She’s so confident, saying you definitely wouldn’t do such a thing. Tsk, she really does have you wrapped around her finger. Fine, you two chat. I’m finished eating, so I’ll head out first.”
Once An Qiu left, Duan Bainian’s expression gradually turned cold. “She’s been pursuing you lately? Why didn’t you tell me?”
An Qiu wasn’t actually pursuing her, of course, but Su Miao felt a surge of grievance that she couldn’t vent.
She silently stuffed a small mouthful of food into her mouth and said, “Wu Feng was pursuing you, and you didn’t tell me either, did you?”
Duan Bainian, having been snapped at, felt her mood worsen. She vaguely sensed that Su Miao was different now.
She reached out to pat Su Miao’s head as she usually did. “Didn’t I tell you before not to hang out with this An Qiu person? She’s a bit questionable. Why are you two getting so close now?”
Su Miao retorted, “How is she questionable? I think she’s great. She knows how to make people laugh, she’s helpful, and she usually helps me practice my lines. Everyone in the crew likes her. Why shouldn’t I hang out with her?”
Hearing that An Qiu even helped Su Miao with her lines, Duan Bainian felt a nerve being pricked. “You like her a lot?”
Su Miao didn’t say anything.
Duan Bainian asked again, “Is she really pursuing you?”
Su Miao still didn’t say anything.
Duan Bainian began to lose her patience. “Speak.”
Su Miao was still feeling incredibly aggrieved. “So you’re allowed to have peach blossoms everywhere, but I’m not allowed to have any?”
Duan Bainian said helplessly, “But I clearly reject them. I’ve never been like you, saying everything, chatting about everything, being so incredibly intimate.”
Su Miao: “Give it a rest with the ‘friends.’ You… you’re just a Green Tea Bitch!”
Duan Bainian was stunned. She said in disbelief, “What… what did you just call me?”
Only then did Su Miao realize she had spoken without thinking. She had blurted out the words An Qiu usually said.
But since the words were already out, her pride wouldn’t allow her to take them back now. “If you didn’t hear it, then forget it.”
Duan Bainian: “Green tea… who did you learn that word from? An Qiu? What kind of friends are you making?”
A surge of anger rushed through Su Miao’s heart. She opened her mouth and said, “An Qiu is great, and I just like hanging out with her. So what? Am I not allowed to have any other friends besides you? She’s good to me. You’re not the only one who’s good to me; she is too. Why shouldn’t I hang out with her?”
Duan Bainian said angrily, “So whoever is good to you, you’ll be with them?”
Su Miao was even angrier. “Yes!”
Duan Bainian’s breathing became uneven with rage. “Fine. If you’ll be with whoever is good to you, then go on and keep hanging out with her. I won’t disturb you anymore.”
With that, Duan Bainian stood up and walked out the door without looking back.
Su Miao didn’t actually want Duan Bainian to leave. She was just resentful. Why did Duan Bainian always have her so tightly controlled? Was she so certain that Su Miao would never leave her?
Seeing Duan Bainian leave, she instinctively stood up to chase after her. But that impulse vanished in an instant.
She suddenly felt that it was all so meaningless.
Even if she chased her and they made up, there would still be countless Wu Fengs in the future, wouldn’t there? If not Wu Feng, there would be Li Feng, Zhang Feng, or Wang Feng. Was she supposed to make a scene every time one of these so-called “friends” appeared?
She sat back down, feeling lost.
But if she didn’t chase after her, was it over between them?
Su Miao felt like her brain had stopped working.
She thought blankly: I’ll wait a couple of days. Maybe in a couple of days, Duan Bainian will take the initiative to come find me again.
However, until her scenes at the Chengde Mountain Resort were finished and half a month had passed, Duan Bainian never contacted her.
When the Chengde scenes were over, the crew took a short two-day break, and Su Miao returned to Beijing.
He Aizhi asked Su Miao, “Is Duan Bainian in Beijing too? Have her come over for a meal when she has time.”
Only then did Su Miao stammer out, “We’ve had a conflict. We haven’t been in touch for half a month.”
Hearing this, He Aizhi actually breathed a sigh of relief.
The thing she had been worried about had finally happened. She finally didn’t have to worry day and night anymore.
She placed some food in Su Miao’s bowl. “If you’re not in touch, then so be it. You’ll meet someone better in the future.”
Su Miao’s eyes widened. “What are you saying, Mom? We haven’t broken up; we’re just having a conflict.”
He Aizhi smiled and said nothing.
The more Su Miao thought about it, the more miserable she felt. She knew what her mother meant—after all, if they hadn’t been in touch for so long during a conflict, they were likely eighty percent of the way to a breakup.
After thinking it over, she used the excuse of delivering the cat to go to the apartment to find Duan Bainian.
Seeing Su Miao, Duan Bainian remembered how Su Miao had called her a Green Tea Bitch and said she wanted to hang out with An Qiu.
So she said coldly, “What did you come here for?”
Su Miao tried to please her cautiously. “I haven’t seen you in half a month. I missed you a little and wanted to see you.”
Duan Bainian had no expression. “I’m a Green Tea Bitch, what is there to miss? Didn’t you say An Qiu was good? Go miss An Qiu then.”
Seeing Duan Bainian’s coldness, Su Miao started to be shamelessly persistent, just like she used to be.
But Duan Bainian had been busy and overwhelmed with her studio affairs lately. Everything that had been going smoothly had become difficult to push forward because of that video of her accompanying someone for drinks. Back home, her brother was pestering her every single day like a ghost to come back and fix up the house, making her even more irritable. At this moment, she really didn’t have the heart for this tug-of-war with Su Miao.
She hadn’t contacted Su Miao for these two weeks partly because she was angry at her, and partly because she was indeed in a foul mood and had no desire to reach out.
She wanted to have a proper talk with Su Miao, but not right now. Given her current state of mind, she really couldn’t settle down to speak with Su Miao properly.
Duan Bainian sighed and said, “Su Miao, I’ve been in a very bad and irritable mood lately. Let me cool off for a while, okay?”
A few days later, the latter half of Su Miao’s film crew’s shooting moved to Hengdian.
A week later, when An Qiu saw Su Miao again, her jaw nearly dropped. “What happened to you? Your dark circles are so heavy you look like a panda.”
Su Miao’s nose felt prickly. “I’ve been so miserable lately.”
An Qiu: “What happened?”
Su Miao: “Duan Bainian is ignoring me… she said she wants to cool off for a while.”
An Qiu sighed. “Then I’m even more miserable than you. My girlfriend cheated on me.”
Su Miao said in shock, “A while ago, didn’t you say it was a peaceful breakup?”
An Qiu: “Hey, I had to save face, didn’t I?”
Su Miao was silent for a moment. “Failure in love means success in career, you…”
An Qiu interrupted, “But I’m not successful in my career either. My advertisement was snatched away by Jian Die.”
Su Miao was greatly shocked. “Which Jian Die? The Best Actress, Jian Die?”
“Yeah.”
Su Miao felt immense sympathy for An Qiu and tried to comfort her cautiously. “They say when things reach their worst, they can only get better. Don’t worry, you’ll soon…”
An Qiu: “My leading role in my next drama was also snatched by Jian Die.”
Su Miao was silent for a long time. “Then you really are more miserable than me.”
An Qiu: “Exactly. So it’s no big deal if Duan Bainian is temporarily ignoring you. Won’t the conflict be resolved after a while?”
These words did indeed comfort Su Miao. She looked at An Qiu with heartache. “She’s supposed to be a big shot in the industry, yet who would have thought that this Jian Die, who presents an ‘indifferent to fame’ persona on the surface, would be so beastly behind the scenes.”
An Qiu reached out to cover Su Miao’s mouth. “I won’t allow you to speak ill of her!”
“Why?”
“She’s my girlfriend!”
“Didn’t you get cheated on?”
An Qiu said shyly, “That was the ex. Jian Die is my new girlfriend.”
Su Miao froze for a moment, then burst out crying with a “wah.”
It turned out she was still the most miserable one.
