I Love Her Because She’s Dim-Witted And Filthy Rich - Chapter 35.1
The next day, Duan Bainian flew to Shanghai to film a skincare advertisement.
She was busy filming all day. It wasn’t until nightfall, when she finally picked up her phone, that she realized Su Miao had sent over 30 intermittent WeChat messages.
Duan Bainian replied, saying she had finished work and was on her way back to the hotel.
In less than half a minute, Su Miao’s video call popped up.
In the video, Su Miao was wearing cute rabbit pajamas with a look of indignation on her face. “You haven’t ignored me for a whole day!”
Duan Bainian smiled. “I was too busy during the day, so I let Guan Jing keep my phone. What did you do today?”
Su Miao replied, “I was so bored today. I watched anime and movies all day, but it’s no fun watching alone. I want to watch with you. That projector I brought to your house—we haven’t even used it once!”
Duan Bainian said dotingly, “Then when I get home, let’s use the projector to see if it works well.”
The two chatted about trivial things all the way back to the hotel.
Duan Bainian opened her door. “I’m going to take a shower now. Should we hang up the video first?”
Su Miao was unwilling. “Just leave it on. When you come back from your shower, we can continue the video.”
Duan Bainian found it a bit funny. “How are you so clingy?”
Su Miao retorted righteously, “Who told you not to be in Beijing? I’m going to cling to you!”
Too lazy to argue with this clingy person, Duan Bainian put her phone on the table and went straight to change her clothes and draw a bath.
When she came out after showering and picked up her phone, the video call indeed hadn’t been disconnected.
Duan Bainian wiped the water droplets off the screen. “It’s past ten o’clock. Aren’t you going to sleep yet?”
Su Miao, while eating snacks, said, “But I’m not sleepy. I can’t sleep. Are you sleepy?”
Duan Bainian smiled. “I’m not sleepy either.”
Su Miao smiled along with her.
She wasn’t sleepy because she wanted to talk to Duan Bainian. Duan Bainian also said she wasn’t sleepy, so Duan Bainian wanted to talk to her too, right?
The more Su Miao thought about it, the happier she became. “What time is your flight back to Beijing the day after tomorrow? I’ll go pick you up.”
“If there are no delays, it’s at 4:20 in the afternoon.”
Su Miao beamed with joy. “Once I pick you up, we can go eat something delicious.”
Just as Duan Bainian was about to agree, she saw the door behind Su Miao open. It was He Aizhi bringing up a small plate of fruit.
In the next second, Su Miao hurriedly hung up the video.
Duan Bainian, who had been in a pleasant mood, suddenly felt a sour taste in her heart.
This feeling was hard to describe.
Perhaps it was dissatisfaction with Su Miao’s cowardice—was she really that afraid of He Aizhi discovering their video call?
Or perhaps it was a worry about the future; based on Su Miao’s current reaction, she certainly wouldn’t dare come out to He Aizhi in the future.
Actually, Duan Bainian understood that it was too early to consider these things. After all, Su Miao was still young, and no one could say for sure what would happen in the next two years.
Maybe in less than half a year, Su Miao would think it was better to find a boyfriend?
Duan Bainian had also considered that if Su Miao seriously suggested a breakup, she would agree. She wanted to be with Su Miao, but if Su Miao, after serious consideration, still wanted to return to the “easy mode” of marriage and children, she naturally had no reason not to let go.
However, no matter how much she understood the logic, the thought of Su Miao’s panicked action of hanging up the video still made her feel heavily blocked.
The next day at the airport, Su Miao arrived on time to wait for the Duan Bainian she had been longing for.
Su Miao couldn’t hide her excitement. “I was afraid you’d actually be delayed, but you arrived right on time!”
Duan Bainian pinched Su Miao’s cheek. “What do you want to eat tonight?”
Su Miao said, “Let’s go eat crab. I didn’t get enough of it last time in Dunhuang. I want more.”
The two first hailed a taxi, went back to the apartment to drop off the luggage, changed the cat food and water for Ergou, and then headed out again, driving to a crab restaurant.
When the crab was served, Duan Bainian put on gloves and went straight to peeling the shells for Su Miao, placing the crab meat in Su Miao’s bowl.
Su Miao ate several in a row. “You eat too! Why aren’t you eating anything?”
Duan Bainian teased, “The speed of my peeling can’t even keep up with your eating. How do I have time to eat?”
Su Miao became a bit embarrassed. “Then… then you wait a moment. I’ll peel for you.”
Saying this, Su Miao started working. It was just that she didn’t have Duan Bainian’s skill; when Duan Bainian peeled, the meat was meat and the shell was shell—it was very clean. With her, it was a total mess.
Su Miao felt even more embarrassed. She put the tiny bits of crab meat and roe she had gouged out into Duan Bainian’s bowl. “You… just make do with this.”
Duan Bainian laughed. “Alright, I’d better be the one to peel. You just be responsible for eating.”
Su Miao looked at Duan Bainian shyly.
Oh my god, Duan Bainian is truly too gentle.
One gets sleepy after being full. By the time they finished the meal, it wasn’t even 8:00 PM, but Su Miao was already clamoring about being sleepy and wanting to go home to sleep.
The next morning, the two ordered takeout, ate breakfast, turned on the projector, and found a recently popular TV drama to watch.
Midway, Su Miao received a call from He Aizhi. It was to remind Su Miao to go buy a gift, as it was her grandmother’s birthday this weekend.
Hearing that it was He Aizhi on the phone, that strange emotion in the bottom of Duan Bainian’s heart surged up again.
After a moment of hesitation, Duan Bainian spoke tentatively, “Say, if your mom knew we were dating, what would her reaction be?”
Su Miao was startled. She suddenly sat bolt upright and waved her hands repeatedly. “That absolutely cannot be known by my mom! We have to keep it well hidden!”
Duan Bainian said, “So, are we going to hide like this for a lifetime? What if your mom asks you to get married? At that time, are you going to pretend you don’t know me?”
Su Miao gave Duan Bainian a strange look. “I’m only 19. How could my mom tell me to get married?”
It felt like a punch landing on cotton; Duan Bainian only felt a deep sense of powerlessness.
So, she changed the way she asked. “Have you never considered finding a suitable time to confess to your mom?”
Su Miao became a bit unhappy; she felt that Duan Bainian was making things difficult for her again.
Su Miao looked down at the floor. “It’s not yet at the point where I absolutely must confess… Besides, haven’t you also not confessed to your parents?”
Duan Bainian fell silent for a moment and then smiled. “My parents are no longer around. How can I confess? Should I burn some paper and tell them?”
Su Miao suddenly looked up, unable to believe it. “Your… your parents are gone? Oh, I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to say it like that.”
Duan Bainian smiled; her face didn’t show any particular signs of sadness. “It’s not your fault. I never told you.”
Out of a sense of guilt, Su Miao changed her tune. “Just wait a bit. After some time, if there’s a suitable opportunity, I’ll tell my mom.”
Actually, these words were just a social formality, like saying, “I’ll treat you to dinner when there’s a chance.”
Basically, that chance would never come.
The person saying it understood this truth, and the person listening understood it as well.
Thus, the two fell into silence, only hearing the noisy background sounds from the TV drama.
People are actually greedy.
In the beginning, Duan Bainian thought that if only this fool could wise up, it would be enough—after all, a secret crush was truly exhausting.
Later, knowing that Su Miao liked her too, Duan Bainian thought it would be enough if the two could establish a relationship. Since they liked each other, why weren’t they together?
Now that the relationship was established, she felt it would be best if she could spend her life with Su Miao. But… clearly, Su Miao had not considered it that way.
Su Miao was too young, and He Aizhi had taken such good care of her that she simply didn’t have the habit of considering the future. She only felt that as long as she was happy in the present, it was fine. She would take it one step at a time; why think so far ahead?
Duan Bainian felt that the irritation in her heart wouldn’t go away. Staying any longer would only make her feel worse.
So she said, “I have a posture class scheduled today. I’m going to class in a bit. You stay at home and play for a while; I’ll be back soon.”
Su Miao gave a dazed “Oh.” “Drive safely.”
Duan Bainian dressed and went out, driving to the place where she took classes.
This teacher was very famous; many celebrities who wanted to shape their bodies sought her out for private lessons.
Duan Bainian usually came at the beginning of the month. Today, she hadn’t made an appointment at all, so naturally, she couldn’t get a spot.
Duan Bainian didn’t know where to go for a moment.
After sitting in the reception area for a while, Duan Bainian got up and drove to a park in the suburbs where people were scarce.
Su Miao had called once midway, but Duan Bainian didn’t really want to pick up, so she set her phone to airplane mode.
After staying in the car for over two hours and feeling that she had adjusted herself well enough, Duan Bainian turned off airplane mode. She prepared to call Su Miao back to ask what the call was about.
After calling for a good while, Su Miao finally picked up. “Hello?”
Duan Bainian tried her best to make her voice sound relaxed. “I just saw you called me. What’s wrong? Do you want me to bring something delicious home?”
Su Miao sounded a bit panicked. “No… my mom has been hospitalized. I’m at the hospital now.”
Duan Bainian said in surprise, “What happened?”
Su Miao’s voice had a hint of a sob. “Our housekeeper bought some wild mushrooms, and some poisonous ones were mixed in. They ate them for lunch, and then she and my mom were vomiting and having diarrhea. They called 120 and sent them to the hospital.”
Duan Bainian started the car. “Which hospital? I’m coming right over.”
They were sent to the hospital in time, so He Aizhi’s life wasn’t in danger. Staying in the hospital for a few days would be enough.
Duan Bainian was busy running around handling the hospitalization procedures. Seeing that He Aizhi’s spirit was okay, she asked if she was hungry and if she wanted some porridge.
He Aizhi said, “Bring some vegetable porridge, something light. Miao Miao is an ignorant child and can’t be counted on for anything. All this running around has really troubled you, Bainian.”
Duan Bainian smiled. “It’s no trouble at all. Auntie, please wait a moment. Su Miao and I will go out and buy porridge for you.”
Being interrupted by this incident, Su Miao completely forgot that she and Duan Bainian had an unpleasant moment in the afternoon.
Once they left the hospital and only the two of them remained, she suddenly remembered that unpleasantness again.
She peeked secretly at Duan Bainian; the other person had no expression.
Was Duan Bainian still angry?
Su Miao guiltily moved forward and hugged Duan Bainian’s arm. “What do you want to eat? Are you having porridge too? Do you want to eat something else delicious?”
Duan Bainian was just thinking about where a porridge shop was nearby and wasn’t intentionally ignoring Su Miao, but she didn’t expect Su Miao to misunderstand.
Looking at Su Miao’s face full of fawning expression, it was exactly the same as the expression of the dog they used to have at home after it wrecked the house.
Timid, tentative, fawning, and eager.
Duan Bainian’s mood suddenly became much better. She had to admit she really fell for this side of Su Miao. She just liked seeing this fool coming to please her.
And she wanted to intentionally make this fool a bit more nervous.
Duan Bainian still had no expression. “No need, I’ll just eat whatever.”
