I Love Her Because She’s Dim-Witted And Filthy Rich - Chapter 33.1
As the end of October approached, Su Miao returned to her own home under the pretext of picking up winter clothes.
It wasn’t actually about the clothes; she was back to test the waters.
He Aizhi returned home after a long day of work and was shocked to see Su Miao there. “You still know the way back?”
Su Miao smiled sheepishly. “Oh, stop it. Why wouldn’t I know how to come home?”
He Aizhi changed into her loungewear. “Aren’t you supposed to go to Sanya soon to record the show? Don’t you usually head over with Duan Bainian? Why are you back now?”
Su Miao replied, “I came back to grab some winter clothes to take with me. I’ve run out of things to wear lately.”
He Aizhi still had unfinished work. She brushed her daughter off with a few casual remarks and opened her laptop.
Su Miao watched He Aizhi for a long while, then turned on the TV and pretended to chat casually. “Mom, the neighbors next door were at it again today.”
Curious, He Aizhi asked, “Why were they fighting this time?”
Su Miao said, “I’m not entirely sure, but from what I heard, it sounded like the neighbor auntie wanted the neighbor brother to go on a blind date, but he refused. Then the auntie started scolding him, saying he was a disgrace to society for messing around with men.”
He Aizhi gave her daughter a strange look. “You used to never pay attention to what went on outside. Why are you eavesdropping on the neighbors today?”
“Oh, they were just being so loud, I couldn’t help but hear,” Su Miao replied. “Mom, I heard that the neighbor brother used to bring boyfriends home before?”
He Aizhi said, “I think that did happen. It was during the Lunar New Year, wasn’t it? It made his father so angry he had a stroke and was sent to the hospital. Such a terrible thing to happen during the holidays. Su Miao, let me tell you, when you start dating in the future, you have to report it to me. Never mind that same-sex partners might be unreliable; opposite-sex ones can be unreliable too—look at your father. Ugh… just mentioning him makes me angry. Anyway, if you like someone, you must tell me, okay? I’ll help you vet them and check their character. Do you like someone right now?”
Su Miao was stunned by He Aizhi’s rapid-fire lecture. She swallowed hard. “What are you talking about, Mom! I’m still so young, how could I have someone I like?”
He Aizhi looked at her suspiciously. “Then why are you acting so weird? If you’re in a relationship, just say so. Your mother isn’t a stranger.”
Su Miao cried out, “Oh, Mom! I really don’t! What are you thinking?”
“Really?”
“Really.”
“You’re almost twenty,” He Aizhi remarked. “It’s normal to be in a relationship.”
Annoyed, Su Miao snapped, “I’m going up to sleep.”
The next day, when Duan Bainian came to pick up Su Miao, she felt that Su Miao seemed listless and lacked energy. She started the car. “What’s wrong? Are you feeling unwell?”
Su Miao slumped her head against the back of the seat, her voice weak. “I didn’t sleep well last night. My head is a bit dizzy.”
Duan Bainian was surprised. Doesn’t this fool usually fall asleep the moment her head hits the pillow? Since when does she have trouble sleeping?
“Is it just that you can’t sleep, or is it something else? Is the dizziness bad? Should we go to the hospital?”
As Duan Bainian spoke, she reached out her right hand to feel Su Miao’s forehead. “You don’t have a fever. It’s probably just lack of rest. You should have a good sleep once we get back to my place.”
Su Miao gave a low “Mhm” and stopped talking.
Back at Duan Bainian’s apartment, Su Miao didn’t even change her clothes before flopping onto the bed. Duan Bainian gave Su Miao a light slap on the back and tossed the pajamas next to her. “Get up and change.”
Su Miao dawdled for a while before getting up to change. While she was changing, Duan Bainian brought over a bowl of sliced fruit and began feeding her.
Su Miao stole glances at Duan Bainian while she ate pieces of watermelon. Even though it wasn’t watermelon season, the fruit was incredibly sweet—sweet enough to reach her heart.
Su Miao smacked her lips at the sweetness. “Duan Bainian, what do you think about… the two of us being like this right now?”
Duan Bainian’s hand paused. “What do you mean by ‘the two of us being like this’?”
Su Miao asked guiltily, “I mean… look, we eat and play together now, and we’re quite happy, right? So why do we have to establish a formal romantic relationship? Once two girls get involved in a romance, doesn’t it become troublesome? Why get caught up in trouble when there’s a better way to live, right?”
Duan Bainian couldn’t help but re-evaluate Su Miao. For someone who was usually a bit slow, she was spouting these sophisticated excuses quite fluently—she almost got swayed for a second.
In a way, Su Miao was currently acting like those “scumbags” who only want to sleep with someone but won’t take responsibility; she just wanted to enjoy the benefits of their relationship without bearing the corresponding responsibility or the subsequent trouble.
After so much back-and-forth, Duan Bainian wasn’t as impatient as she used to be. She unhurriedly set down the fruit and took a wet wipe from the table to clean her hands.
“So you mean that the way we are now isn’t really different from dating? Therefore, we don’t need to make it official?”
That wasn’t exactly what Su Miao meant, but since she didn’t know how to answer, she kept her mouth shut.
Duan Bainian said, “Su Miao, I don’t want to argue about these grand philosophies with you. I’ll just say one thing: if you’re not willing to date me, then don’t stop me from dating others. Doing that would be very selfish.”
Su Miao instinctively wanted to argue, but seeing Duan Bainian’s expressionless face, she swallowed her words.
She felt she couldn’t win an argument against Duan Bainian right now, so she figured it was better to wear her down slowly. Duan Bainian doted on her so much; she was sure she could eventually succeed if she just kept at it.
So, she changed the subject. “I feel like these pajamas are a bit damp. I’m going to change into another pair.”
However, Duan Bainian reached out and stopped her. “Don’t bother with other pajamas. Just change back into your own clothes.”
Su Miao was stunned. “What for?”
“I’m taking you home,” Duan Bainian said.
Su Miao suddenly panicked. “Why are you doing this again? Every time you get angry, you want to send me home! Can’t you come up with something else?”
Duan Bainian turned to put on her coat. “Hurry up and change. Don’t wait for me to kick you out.”
Su Miao was furious. How could this person be like this? She had just picked her up and now she was driving her away! What was she supposed to be? Someone who comes and goes at a moment’s notice?
She angrily pulled off her pajamas. “Fine, I’ll go! Who wants to stay here anyway!”
Duan Bainian replied coldly, “Then why haven’t you left yet?”
Those words made Su Miao pause while changing. Duan Bainian was going too far!
She indignantly threw on her clothes and stomped her bare feet on the floor. “Don’t you ever ask me to come back because I won’t!”
Duan Bainian took her keys and followed Su Miao into the elevator.
To her surprise, Su Miao pressed the button for the first floor. Duan Bainian glanced at her. “The parking garage is on B1.”
Su Miao’s face was flushed with anger. “I’ll take a taxi home myself. I don’t need you to drive me!”
Duan Bainian obviously wouldn’t let Su Miao take a taxi home alone; in her current state of anger, who knew what might happen?
She practically dragged Su Miao into the car and forcibly buckled her seatbelt.
Duan Bainian could see that Su Miao was mostly just putting on an act; otherwise, she wouldn’t necessarily have been able to drag her.
Looking at the posturing Su Miao, Duan Bainian felt like laughing. However, she quickly regained her cold expression—she had expected Su Miao might try to back out like this, so she was playing along tonight.
Neither of them spoke the entire way.
At first, Su Miao stared out the window with a stubborn look, but by the time they were almost at her doorstep, she still hadn’t received an apology or comfort from Duan Bainian.
Why was this different from what she had imagined? Lately, whenever she threw a small tantrum, Duan Bainian would always comfort her very quickly!
When the car stopped in front of her family’s villa, Su Miao still wasn’t ready to give up. She glanced at Duan Bainian. “I’m getting out now.”
Hurry, tell me not to leave.
Duan Bainian didn’t even look at her. “Mhm. Go back and get some sleep. Rest well.”
It was one thing to mention sleep, but hearing it made Su Miao feel even more wronged. If it wasn’t for her desire to be with Duan Bainian, would she have been so worried that she stayed up half the night testing her mother’s attitude?
And what was the result? She had only tried to discuss maintaining a friendship, and this was how Duan Bainian treated her!
The more she thought about it, the angrier she got. She hopped out of the car, slammed the door with a loud thud, and walked into her villa without looking back.
Hearing the slam of the door, Duan Bainian’s heart skipped a beat.
This fool had really been spoiled by her. If it were anyone else, would she dare to slam their car door like that?
She wouldn’t dare do it to anyone else.
She was the type who was only bold with those close to her. In front of others, “cowardly” wasn’t even enough to describe her; you’d need a dozen “cowardlies” to cover it.
Thinking of this, Duan Bainian chuckled softly. She was certain Su Miao would eventually come back to her. Whatever needed to be said could wait until then; she believed the effect would be much better.
On the other side, Su Miao didn’t go to sleep after returning home. She was too angry to sleep.
She spent her time doing puzzles and watching anime. It wasn’t until lunch the next day that she felt her anger beginning to fade.
When she was angry, the emotion occupied her brain; now that she wasn’t angry, her mind was filled only with boredom.
Su Miao was bored to death. She really didn’t know what to do, so she dug out a puzzle she had been working on before. By the time she finished it, it was already nine o’clock at night.
Looking at the completed image of Kakashi in front of her, Su Miao thought she would feel a sense of achievement, but instead, she felt an unbearable emptiness.
She put on an anime she had seen before, and as she watched, she grew sleepy. Before falling asleep, she thought to herself that Duan Bainian would surely come to apologize the next morning.
However, the next day, Duan Bainian did not come.
Su Miao was worried that Duan Bainian might be too embarrassed to come upstairs, so she deliberately sat in the living room downstairs, waiting expectantly from morning until afternoon, but Duan Bainian never showed up.
She asked the nanny who had returned from grocery shopping, “Auntie, when you went out, did you see a white SUV parked at the gate?”
The nanny thought for a moment. “There are a lot of white ones. Isn’t the neighbor’s car white?”
Su Miao: “…”
Refusing to give up, she went to the gate to check for herself, but Duan Bainian’s car was nowhere to be found.
Su Miao returned to her room dejectedly and resumed the anime from yesterday.
While watching, she received a WeChat message from the staff of “Truth After Drinks,” reminding her that the recording for the next episode in Sanya would start in three days and to be there on time.
Su Miao instantly cheered up.
Exactly! She had almost forgotten about the show! She and Duan Bainian had booked a flight for the day after tomorrow. Duan Bainian would definitely have to pick her up to go to the airport then!
Once she realized this, Su Miao felt much more energetic and even found herself feeling hungry. She dashed downstairs, rummaged through the fridge, and found a bunch of food.
Thanks to the reminder from the production team, Su Miao had a good night’s sleep. Her dreams were filled with everything she wanted, including a gentle Duan Bainian.
However, the time spent awake during the day was particularly grueling. Nothing seemed interesting.
