I Just Want to be a Throwaway Character - Chapter 71
Chapter 71
“What if I told you I don’t plan to break off the engagement?” Lu Fanghan leaned in close to Ji Wan, trying to catch a glimpse of even the slightest bit of affection in the girl’s eyes.
But the girl’s eyes only darted away, and her voice was a little flustered. “That’s… that’s not funny. Get up, you’re hurting me.”
“I’ll say it again, I won’t break off the engagement. And I’ve never pretended anything.” Lu Fanghan’s expression was serious. But it was this seriousness that made Ji Wan panic. She felt like an answer she didn’t even dare to imagine was about to be revealed.
“Lu… Lu Fanghan, I’m going back. Get up.” The girl’s voice was soft but held a clear note of avoidance.
Lu Fanghan didn’t give Ji Wan a chance. With one hand, she pinned Ji Wan’s hands above her head. With the other, she lifted Ji Wan’s chin, forcing her to meet her gaze.
“I’ve changed my mind; I don’t want to break off the engagement. I want you to continue this relationship with me.”
“Until…” Lu Fanghan intentionally lowered her voice and leaned down to Ji Wan’s sensitive ear. When she saw Ji Wan’s pale ear turn an alluring color, Lu Fanghan gently pressed her lips against it, kissing the sensitive lobe. “Until you become my wife.”
In an instant, Ji Wan’s mind exploded. What does Lu Fanghan mean? She… she… Ji Wan didn’t dare to think more. This was too bizarre, wasn’t it? Or rather, how could it be possible? It must be her overthinking.
Ji Wan tried to move her ear away, but Lu Fanghan quickly brought her face back. She moved closer to Ji Wan’s cheek until her warm breath and faint scent wafted to Ji Wan’s nose. Ji Wan felt a sense of things getting out of control. She closed her eyes in fear, not daring to look. This scene, if I’m not mistaken… Ji Wan’s face flushed uncontrollably.
But she kept her eyes closed for a long time, and the person pinning her down didn’t make any move to get closer. Instead, Lu Fanghan released her chin and gently caressed her cheek. In the darkness, her senses were incredibly clear. Especially when Lu Fanghan’s cool hand touched her warm cheek, a tingling sensation like an electric current shot through Ji Wan’s body.
She had imagined many scenarios, but Lu Fanghan made no move. Ji Wan’s curiosity got the better of her, and she slowly opened her eyes. What she saw was Lu Fanghan’s teasing, dark eyes. Her fingers were still toying with a petal, quietly appreciating Ji Wan’s shy expression.
…
The next second, Lu Fanghan rolled off Ji Wan and sat down next to her.
“What’s with that expression? Do you want me to do something to you?” Lu Fanghan gently pinched Ji Wan’s soft cheek and chuckled.
A feeling of being teased came over her. “You… you scoundrel.” Ji Wan felt like she was on a roller coaster, scared but secretly anticipating something. How embarrassing! Without the courage to scold Lu Fanghan, Ji Wan could only shyly turn her back, not daring to look at her.
Lu Fanghan smiled at the person who was still lying on the grass, covering their eyes in utter embarrassment. Only Lu Fanghan knew that the self-control required to not kiss her and the urge to tease Ji Wan had pushed her to her limit. It was still too early; she couldn’t make Ji Wan hate her. What she did in the cold spring was already too much; she couldn’t scare her again.
Remembering the beautiful sight of the girl wet from the water, her lips forcefully stained red, Lu Fanghan’s breathing grew a little heavy. Even though she really wanted to kiss her passionately just now, the other person was clearly more nervous, wasn’t she? They still had the engagement, and Ji Wan would be her wife eventually.
On the way back, Ji Wan walked quickly and awkwardly on the beautiful path. The scoundrel who had just teased her was following behind. She was a little angry—angry at Lu Fanghan’s inexplicable actions and at her own inappropriate thoughts.
“Lu Fanghan is a big scoundrel!!!” Ji Wan complained angrily in her mind.
Lu Fanghan laughed at the sulking girl. She quickly took two steps forward and took Ji Wan’s soft hand, her voice gentle. “Are you still mad?”
Ji Wan didn’t say anything, trying to pull her hand away. But her soft strength was no match for Lu Fanghan. She couldn’t get away. Ji Wan glared at Lu Fanghan angrily. But Lu Fanghan only smiled, still holding that soft hand. Ji Wan simply let Lu Fanghan lead her, turning her head away. She actually teased me. Hmph, I’m not talking to Lu Fanghan anymore. But her adorable, awkward look made the smile on Lu Fanghan’s face linger. It made Lu Fanghan feel an urge to tease her.
Lu Fanghan stopped, and Ji Wan was still walking. Their hands were still linked. Since Ji Wan was angry, she was walking very fast. As expected, she was suddenly pulled back.
“Ah!” Ji Wan couldn’t help but yelp, thinking she was going to fall. But she quickly fell into Lu Fanghan’s embrace.
“Okay, don’t be mad anymore,” Lu Fanghan said, gently pulling Ji Wan into her arms.
“You… let me go, there are people here.” Suddenly being pulled into Lu Fanghan’s embrace, smelling her pleasant scent, the blush that had just faded from Ji Wan’s face returned. Why… why is she hugging… me?
Today’s Lu Fanghan felt very wrong. A moment ago, Ji Wan could explain that no one was around in the back of the mountain. But they were almost at the village entrance; there would definitely be people!
Lu Fanghan just held her, her hand gently stroking the back of Ji Wan’s head, pressing it against her chest. “What are you afraid of? We’re being open and honest; it’s not like we’re doing anything sneaky,” Lu Fanghan said with a soft laugh.
“Let go, stop hugging me! If you keep this up, I’ll get mad,” Ji Wan’s flustered voice came out.
Lu Fanghan couldn’t see the expression on Ji Wan’s face, but her flushed ears told her that Ji Wan’s expression must be very cute. Cute enough to make someone want to kiss her. And Lu Fanghan did just that. She gently kissed Ji Wan’s flushed earlobe and quickly pulled away, pretending nothing had happened.
“You… you…” Ji Wan sputtered for a long time, unable to say anything. She covered her ears shyly. Has Lu Fanghan gone crazy? Why are her actions so… so brazen? She’s acting like… like she has… a fever.
“Ahem…” A few soft coughs came from behind.
Uncle Ji stood awkwardly at the village entrance, looking at the two of them. He had thought that if Ji Wan couldn’t get any benefits and had to come back from the Lu family’s home, it would be fine. He could support her for the rest of her life; he already considered Ji Wan his own daughter. But looking at this… they seemed like a couple in the throes of a passionate relationship.
Ji Wan was startled by the sudden sound and hurriedly pushed Lu Fanghan away. Lu Fanghan didn’t insist on hugging her anymore, just smiled and looked at Ji Wan’s blushing cheeks, her eyes darkening.
Ji Wan saw her uncle and ran to him as if he were a lifeline, hiding behind him. Uncle Ji had become a little bloated after two years of a comfortable life. When he was thin, he looked a little cunning, but now he seemed honest and simple. That layer of fat gave Ji Wan an inexplicable sense of security, at least it could block Lu Fanghan’s view.
Lu Fanghan didn’t say anything, just politely greeted Uncle Ji.
“Um, Lu Fanghan. You’ve brought me home. You can go back now. I won’t see you off,” Ji Wan said, peeking her eyes out from behind her uncle’s back.
“Wanwan, you can’t be so rude,” Uncle Ji said, pulling her out and smiling apologetically at Lu Fanghan. “If Miss Lu doesn’t mind, my humble home has some food.” Uncle Ji smiled politely. He didn’t expect Lu Fanghan to actually come over.
But… “Okay, thank you, Uncle.” Lu Fanghan nodded calmly, agreeing.
“Wait, no! It’s getting dark, Lu Fanghan. You should go back now, or the road will be hard to travel at night.” Ji Wan had a bad feeling. She felt that if Lu Fanghan stayed, something bad would happen.
But Lu Fanghan just gave Ji Wan a slight smile. “Are you disgusted with me?”
Before Ji Wan could say anything, her uncle panicked. That was the young lady of the Lu family! Who would dare to offend her?
“If Miss Lu doesn’t mind, then please, Miss Lu, you must come to my humble home.” Ji Wan was about to say that she was disgusted, but her uncle forcefully covered her mouth and gave her a threatening look. It was as if he was saying, “If you cause any more trouble, you won’t get any chicken legs tonight.”
…
A person in ancient times would not bow for five bushels of rice, and now Ji Wan would bow for chicken legs.
On the way back to the Ji family courtyard, Uncle Ji felt that something was strange about him, especially walking between Ji Wan and Lu Fanghan. Lu Fanghan’s gaze would always subtly pass through him and land on Ji Wan. He could feel the deep meaning in her eyes. And his silly niece was still happily chatting, not feeling awkward about the extra person. Sigh, I wonder if this is a blessing or a curse.
When they arrived at Uncle Ji’s house, it was a typical courtyard-style home. In fact, the Ji residence was already considered a very good house in the village. It had been renovated, so it was a large and elegant courtyard. Although it was not as big as the Lu family’s backyard.
As for the food, Uncle Ji had prepared as much as he could. He enthusiastically urged Ji Wan and Lu Fanghan to eat more. After his brother’s death, Uncle Ji took in Ji Wan. He had never married. In the past, Ji Wan would talk and eat with him. Now, he was the only one left in the old Ji residence. He regretted agreeing to discuss Ji Wan marrying into the Lu family. He was greedy for a moment and didn’t know what the consequences would be. It was so hard for Ji Wan to come back. He happily had someone clean the house over and over again.
At the dining table, Lu Fanghan had already put down her chopsticks. Uncle Ji was almost done eating. Only Ji Wan remained, she ate more than half of the food on the table by herself. Lu Fanghan smiled, watching the focused Ji Wan. She found it a little funny to see her seriously chewing, her cheeks puffed up adorably. She gently picked up a handkerchief and wiped a bit of sauce from Ji Wan’s soft lips. Her voice was gentle and filled with fondness. “Okay, eat slowly.”
Ji Wan didn’t react, but Uncle Ji’s old face turned red first. This is truly a bit embarrassing. One would think the Lu family was mistreating her.
Ji Wan felt the softness of the handkerchief on her lips, along with Lu Fanghan’s strange and complex gaze. Ji Wan’s face also felt hot. She awkwardly put down her bowl and chopsticks. “Um, I… I’m full. I’ll go back to my room first. Bye, Uncle.” Ji Wan got up awkwardly and went back to the original host’s room.
Watching Ji Wan hide back in her room in a panic, the tenderness in Lu Fanghan’s eyes was almost overflowing. Uncle Ji felt that she seemed to be very fond of his niece. But… remembering Ji Wan’s words to him, Uncle Ji was a little doubtful.
“Miss Lu, would you like me to arrange a magical carriage to send you back?” Uncle Ji asked politely. Although the other’s carriage was much more luxurious than his, Lu Fanghan just looked at the sky that was getting dark. She turned and met Uncle Ji’s eyes, a cunning look in hers. “It’s dark. Aren’t you going to let me stay the night, Uncle?”
Uncle Ji was stunned. “Ah, well… okay. I’ll arrange a room for you right away.”
But Lu Fanghan just got up and said calmly, “No need. Ji Wan is my future wife. I’ll sleep with her.” She then turned and walked away, leaving a bewildered Uncle Ji behind.
What did she just say?
