- I Helped My Best Friend with Her Romance—and Fell for the Enemy’s Strategist
- Chapter 11 - Is This the Difference Between a Matchmaker and a Strategist?
The meeting had been going on for over an hour, and the main topics were mostly settled.
The version they ended up using was the one Lin Ruocheng had hastily prepared, with only minor adjustments.
But the changes weren’t significant.
Lin Ruocheng hadn’t expected the meeting to go so smoothly, and the efficiency was much higher than she had imagined.
So far, Fu Yanxi’s leadership skills seemed pretty good.
No wonder she had become the student council president, she must have some strengths, after all.
Not only was she capable, but her management skills were decent, too.
Most importantly, her hands were… well, quite slender.
And she was rather good-looking, too. Look at that stoic face, hardly showing any expression.
The opposing strategist was quite attractive. What if she could win her over in one fell swoop…
Lin Ruocheng didn’t dare entertain the thought, but right now, she wasn’t particularly interested in her.
Her mind was entirely consumed by the desire to win. After all, she had promised to help her best friend find love.
Matchmakers like them never stepped onto the battlefield themselves.
“Let’s go, Wanqing. We have another big class tonight.”
Sometimes, Lin Ruocheng really didn’t feel like attending classes, but there was no way around it.
She couldn’t afford to mess with her credits.
Her mom had always said that when looking for a partner, she should choose someone she genuinely liked, not just someone who looked good on the surface but had a bunch of flaws. As long as there were no deal-breakers or legal issues, they wouldn’t interfere with whom she liked. The only rule was: no cross-species relationships.
Just stick to humans.
But so far, in college, there weren’t many people who caught her interest.
On the other hand, quite a few classmates seemed interested in her.
She had received plenty of confessions and love letters.
“Oh, okay, I’m coming.”
Song Wanqing trotted over like a lovable fool, completely forgetting to say goodbye to her crush.
If Lin Ruocheng hadn’t promised Song Wanqing she’d help, she would never have taken on this matchmaking gig. Especially not when this silly girl was now hurrying ahead, urging her to leave, as if she had completely forgotten about the woman she was crushing on.
Oh well, as the matchmaker, she had to step up.
“President, Sister Yu, we’ll be heading out now.”
“Alright, take care on your way.”
As soon as they stepped out of the teaching building, Lin Ruocheng smacked Song Wanqing on the back.
No need to hold back with your best friend.
“What’s wrong with you? You couldn’t even say goodbye to your crush? Did you forget to bid farewell to her just now? What’s going on in that head of yours? How are you ever going to find a partner like this?”
Didn’t she understand that taking the initiative was the first step to any story?
Was she expecting Lin Ruocheng to do all the arranging for her?
Whose love life was this, anyway, hers or Lin Ruocheng’s?
“Ah? Well, I… I sort of held her hand for a second just now, and she didn’t pull away… I think she might…”
Song Wanqing felt that saying goodbye in person or asking her out somewhere felt too intimate. Couldn’t they just talk about things on WeChat? Besides, when the ballpoint pen fell on the floor earlier, she had picked it up for her and accidentally brushed her hand. And her crush didn’t seem to mind, no sign of dislike.
Did that mean she might have feelings for her, too?
Just thinking about it made her unable to suppress a grin.
Lin Ruocheng knew her too well.
That was hardly “holding hands”!
It was clearly just an accidental touch, nothing more. And she was already this overjoyed?
“So, if it’s like you and Fu Yanxi, does that mean you’re heading towards marriage?”
“Maybe what? Tomorrow is Saturday. If you’re free, ask her out for a meal and a movie, you can manage that, right? I don’t need to teach you that, do I? As individuals, we all need some personal space. I’m your strategist, not the drawstring on your sweatpants. Don’t drag me along everywhere you go…”
Song Wanqing was a classic “friend-dependent” girl.
When she was younger, she was often sickly, so her parents encouraged her to pursue sports.
She had always been in the same class as Lin Ruocheng, partly because many school bullies from other schools had crushes on Lin Ruocheng.
As a result, Song Wanqing, being Lin Ruocheng’s best friend, received a lot of preferential treatment and all sorts of reasonable treats. She was very clingy toward Lin Ruocheng. On top of that, she used to sport a short mullet haircut as a child, which made her look quite handsome. Lin’s two mothers had even subtly asked if she was dating someone.
Lin Ruocheng had firmly denied it every time.
She and Song Wanqing could only ever be friends.
As for the kind of childhood sweetheart romance people imagined for them, that was out of the question.
Lin Ruocheng had absolutely no such feelings.
She only saw the other as her best friend, nothing more.
“Huh? Tomorrow… I’m going alone? What… what should I say?”
Song Wanqing was a bit nervous, especially at the thought of facing the “battlefield” alone tomorrow.
That made her even more anxious.
“Why are you looking at me? You’re the one dating, not me. Do you expect me to help you with everything in the future, too?”
“How do you usually talk to me? You’re so smooth with me, she’s not going to eat you. Why are you so nervous? Relax. It’s just a meal and a movie. No need to be so worked up. And based on what you just told me, she probably doesn’t dislike you. Keep it up.”
“Godmother, please help me out a little more~ I’m begging you~ Do you really want to see your best friend end up alone forever?”
“Stop! Don’t act cute with me. It’s disgusting. Stay away.”
Lin Ruocheng was thoroughly disgusted. If she had something to say, she should just say it properly.
What was she doing? Acting all shameless again?
If she had that kind of skill, why didn’t she just go act cute with Yu Qiuli?
The other person would definitely fall for it.
“Fine, I’ll go with you. But don’t ever use that tone with me again. It’s disgusting, like, nightmare-inducing level of gross.”
…
“Yanxi, she invited me to watch a movie! And it’s the new romance film that just came out. But it’s a shame, I already went to the premiere and have seen it. What should I do? Should I tell her the truth or say something else?”
Fu Yanxi had just stepped out of the shower.
Their dorm was a high-end double room.
The facilities were quite comprehensive.
And the space was relatively spacious.
Her hair was still dripping with water, but she didn’t even glance at the other person.
Instead, she picked up a hairdryer and began drying her hair, head lowered.
“You can just refuse. Tell her you’ve already seen it, so you won’t go this time. Just let it go.”
“Huh? Wouldn’t that be a bit rude?”
Yu Qiuli was perfect in every way except when it came to matters of the heart, she was incredibly naive.
People like her were the easiest to deceive, especially since they fell for it every time.
And on top of that, she had money and came from a well-off family.
“If you know it’s not good, then shouldn’t you know what to say?”
Seeing the confused look in her best friend’s eyes, Fu Yanxi took a deep breath.
She decided to explain it in plain, simple terms.
“She invited you to watch a movie, and after it ends at this time, you’ll definitely have to eat together. She must have already planned the rest of the schedule. Even if you’ve seen this kind of movie before, you have to pretend you haven’t. Besides, who goes on a date to the movies just for the movie itself?”
“Just reply with ‘Okay,’ and hurry up and take a shower now. Make a good impression.”
“Yeah, you’re right.”
Fu Yanxi’s phone buzzed with a message from Lin Ruocheng.
[Lin Ruocheng: Xiao Xixi, don’t forget to wash up nicely today. See you tomorrow afternoon! (Flying kisses and hugs)]
[Fu Yanxi: If you’re worried, you can check for yourself tomorrow.]
Lin Ruocheng laughed at the message. Was this the difference between a human and a strategist?
