I Heard You Only See Me as a Friend - Chapter 40
In the end, the chaos was perfectly resolved without anyone getting hurt. The school authorities issued a notice that tomorrow’s competition would proceed as planned and that they would collect the test papers later, so everyone should not worry.
Ji Wan and Feng Jin bought dinner outside the school and brought it back to the hotel to eat.
“Eat more meat. Exams consume a lot of brain cells; you won’t last without proper nutrition.” As Feng Jin spoke, he kept placing meat into Ji Wan’s bowl. “You’re one of the thinnest people in our class. I suspect not eating enough is the main reason you can’t get a perfect score.”
Normally, Ji Wan would stop Feng Jin from desperately piling food on his plate. He was full, of course, it was just that he didn’t absorb many nutrients, which made him look thin.
But now, Ji Wan watched in silence as Feng Jin served him. When Feng Jin stopped and prepared to eat as if nothing were wrong, Ji Wan suddenly spoke: “Feng Jin.”
Both Ji Wan’s voice and tone were quite serious, causing Feng Jin’s movements to falter.
Ji Wan spoke every word clearly: “When that Omega went into heat, instead of running away quickly, why did you come back to drag me along?”
Feng Jin poked at his food, trying his best to keep his facial muscles relaxed.
He went back, of course, because of those pheromones.
They were entirely different from the Omega and Alpha pheromones Ji Wan accidentally brushed against on a daily basis. These were the pheromones emitted by an Omega during heat thick, sweet, and enticing enough to lure one into a bottomless abyss.
And Ji Wan was standing right on the edge of that abyss.
When Feng Jin didn’t answer, Ji Wan continued, questioning him word for word: “You didn’t even cover your own nose or gland, yet you came to cover mine. What on earth were you trying to do?”
Feng Jin irritably shifted the food in his lunchbox back and forth, still maintaining his silence as if following the rule of not speaking while eating.
Are my thoughts about to be discovered?
It was impossible for Ji Wan to accept him right now.
After this conversation, what he might face was Ji Wan’s estrangement.
He would not accept that.
Thinking of a way to explain, Feng Jin said slowly, “I believe my actions at the time were quite normal…”
“Yes, I know what you were thinking.” Ji Wan interrupted Feng Jin’s next words, taking the initiative to state the reason Feng Jin would act that way. “You were also made muddled by that Omega’s pheromones at the time. You felt he was dangerous and saw me beside him, so you instinctively came over to pull me away, right?”
Feng Jin: “…”
The logic in Ji Wan’s statement was perfectly smooth; not a single flaw could be found.
Feng Jin immediately followed this reasoning to admit it, while also correcting the part of Ji Wan’s words that dissatisfied him: “…I wasn’t that muddled. I just wanted to take you and run away quickly.”
“Let’s not talk about this anymore. Eat,” Feng Jin said.
Ji Wan didn’t pick up his chopsticks. He rested one hand on the table to support his forehead and said slowly, “I know your self-control might be very strong, strong enough to resist part of a heat-phase Omega’s temptation. But have you ever thought about the consequences if you hadn’t been able to resist, especially if that Omega had a high compatibility with you?”
Feng Jin looked at Ji Wan’s profile. Ji Wan’s slender brows were knitted, his eyes tightly shut, and his long, black eyelashes trembled slightly like a butterfly’s wings.
“You are a favored child of heaven with limitless prospects. You are more competitive than ordinary people, you have a germaphobia, and you care about your dignity.” As Ji Wan spoke, he could less and less restrain his anger. With teachers on guard, nothing would actually happen to that Omega, but it was hard to say whether Feng Jin would suffer a psychological breakdown once he sobered up and realized what he had done.
Ji Wan’s anger could no longer be hidden: “What if something happened to you? You worry when something happens to me; wouldn’t I worry if something happened to you? If something like this happens again, don’t worry about me. Take care of yourself, do you hear me?”
Feng Jin looked at Ji Wan, momentarily stunned.
…This seemed to be the first time he had seen Ji Wan truly angry.
And the reason Ji Wan couldn’t afford to be angry—
Immediately after, Feng Jin saw Ji Wan’s face suddenly turn pale as he leaned over the coffee table, gasping for air in distress.
“Ji Wan?” Feng Jin’s voice was filled with panic. “How are you? Do you have your medicine?”
“Don’t panic… the pocket on the outermost side of the suitcase… there’s medicine inside.” Ji Wan’s voice was very faint.
Feng Jin quickly found the medicine. With trembling hands, he poured out two tablets according to the instructions on the bottle and brought them to Ji Wan along with some water.
Ji Wan took them and leaned on the coffee table to regulate his breathing, slowly returning to normal.
“I’m fine now.” Ji Wan lifted his head and saw that Feng Jin’s face was visibly pale he looked more like a patient than Ji Wan did. He turned it around to comfort him: “Did I scare you? This is fine; just take the medicine in time. When I was younger and couldn’t control my emotions, I might have taken it several times a day.”
Feng Jin held Ji Wan’s wrist; his usually powerful fingers were still shaking.
“We’re going to the hospital to check now,” Feng Jin said.
“It’s not necessary. It’s not the first time I’ve had an episode, and I go to the hospital for regular checkups.” Ji Wan patted Feng Jin’s trembling hand. “Did you remember what I said earlier? If something like this happens again, you have to leave first.”
“…I remember,” Feng Jin whispered.
It wasn’t only he who would worry about Ji Wan; Ji Wan would also worry about him, feeling anxious and distressed over his physical condition.
Their concern for each other was the same, even if Ji Wan only treated him as a friend.
Feng Jin’s eyes felt a bit dry; he blinked and lowered his head to eat.
Satisfied, Ji Wan picked up his chopsticks and moved the meat back into Feng Jin’s bowl, adding two meatballs as a bonus. “As long as there isn’t a next time. Fortunately, that Omega’s pheromones weren’t very compatible with you, and you didn’t have much of a reaction to him, otherwise it really would have been terrifying.”
“…Mhm.”
“Did that Omega’s pheromones smell good?” Ji Wan asked again.
“…I can’t remember. No impression,” Feng Jin answered.
Ji Wan was now certain Feng Jin had been lightheaded at the time and didn’t ask further. Once Feng Jin finished his meal, he urged him to go shower and wash off any pheromones that might have stuck to his clothes.
Feng Jin didn’t object and went to shower obediently as Ji Wan said. Ji Wan sat on a chair playing on his phone with his back to the bathroom.
As he played, Ji Wan suddenly received a text from the teacher responsible for notifying them of matters related to this competition:
[Urgent notice: Upon inspection, the Omega student who entered heat today has a rather unique constitution. Alpha students who felt strong pheromones in the examination hall, if you feel any physical discomfort, please go to the hospital for treatment immediately!]
The wording of this text was vague and didn’t specify what was unique about that Omega student. Ji Wan’s gaze froze on the words “Alphas who felt strong pheromones.”
Feng Jin’s pheromones were very strong, but in the time since he came back, he hadn’t said anything.
Is he hiding something from me?
When Feng Jin finished his shower and came out, Ji Wan didn’t wait for him to dry his hair. He stood up immediately and circled behind Feng Jin.
The weather had turned warm, and Feng Jin was only wearing a thin short-sleeved shirt. Ji Wan walked up and found some red marks around the edges of Feng Jin’s clothing.
What was this?
Ji Wan’s expression turned solemn instantly. He tugged at Feng Jin with a rare firmness, pulling down a bit of his shirt.
The intimacy of this movement made Feng Jin’s body go stiff. “What are you doing? If you want to see, you can just say so; no need to be so sneaky.”
Ignoring Feng Jin’s nonsense, Ji Wan made an immediate decision upon seeing the red marks hidden by the clothes: “To the hospital.”
Feng Jin pulled his clothes back into place, hiding the marks again. “I’m not going. Why go to the hospital?”
“I’ll also take the opportunity to get checked at the hospital,” Ji Wan said.
“Then let’s go, hurry,” Feng Jin immediately changed his tune.
Ji Wan wasn’t surprised by Feng Jin’s change of heart. He didn’t dawdle and immediately took a taxi with Feng Jin to the nearest Grade-A hospital.
Ji Wan wanted Feng Jin to get checked first, but Feng Jin was resolutely unyielding, insisting on seeing Ji Wan finish his heart checkup before going himself, and repeatedly stating he was fine.
Helpless, Ji Wan could only quickly complete his checkup first.
Fortunately, there were indeed no issues; his symptoms were well-controlled after taking the medicine.
Only then did Feng Jin go to the appropriate department, satisfied.
The doctor examining Feng Jin looked more and more surprised, finally asking Ji Wan in astonishment: “This friend of yours… he hasn’t shown any abnormalities since returning?”
Ji Wan’s heart sank. “No. Doctor, what’s wrong with him? Is it serious?”
“Looking at him, it’s nothing major.” The doctor marveled, sitting behind the desk to write a prescription. While writing, he said to Ji Wan: “There’s a special component in that Omega’s heat pheromones that has a stronger lure for Alphas with more powerful pheromones. Even after separating, it can still induce the Alpha into a heat phase, making them desperately want to find someone to mark.”
Ji Wan froze and looked at Feng Jin.
Feng Jin was also looking at him, still wearing that “I’m single and the coolest” expression, even giving him a smile. No restlessness or urgency to find someone to satisfy a physiological need could be seen.
The doctor continued: “If it were someone who is usually more impulsive, this illness would indeed require an emergency trip for medical treatment to prevent him from rushing into the street and hurting people. But this young man seems very capable of enduring, so it’s alright. I’ll prescribe some medicine for him; it’ll be more comfortable to take it than to just tough it out.”
Ji Wan breathed a sigh of relief. He thanked the doctor and left with Feng Jin after taking the prescription.
After getting the medicine and leaving the hospital to return to the hotel, Feng Jin acted very composed the whole way. Once they were back in the room and the door was locked, Ji Wan’s worry that Feng Jin might suddenly lose control finally subsided, replaced by intense curiosity.
Ji Wan’s heart was itching with curiosity. In the end, he was too embarrassed to check the current state of Feng Jin’s private areas, so he looked at Feng Jin’s face: “…Are you really okay?”
“What would be wrong?” Feng Jin raised an eyebrow.
“It’s just…” Ji Wan said as subtly as possible, “Do you need to go to the bathroom to handle it, or… take a bite of me?”
He had previously thought that Omega’s pheromones weren’t very compatible with Feng Jin’s, which was why Feng Jin could lead him out as if nothing were wrong and then come back to eat and shower normally.
But now, he knew his previous conclusion was entirely incorrect.
“…How could I go into heat because of someone else’s pheromones, or bite you because of someone else’s pheromones?” Feng Jin opened a can of cold Coke from the room and drank half the bottle in one gulp. With a surge of strength in his fingers and a series of crunching sounds, the can was crushed flat.
Feng Jin’s gaze met Ji Wan’s. Feng Jin’s face held the playfulness of a joke, looking entirely un-serious.
“That’s called cheating, you know? My two-day limited-edition boyfriend,” Feng Jin said softly.
