I Heard I’m a Scummy Alpha? [Transmigration] - Chapter 21
The surveillance room wasn’t a place for conversation. Yan Zui didn’t respond, only collected the footage of Qin Lifeng’s conversation with the janitor and returned with Qi Yunwei to the CEO’s office on the top floor.
There were still twenty minutes before office hours began. Meeting Qi Yunwei’s hopeful gaze, Yan Zui paused, then said, “Qin Lifeng spread those rumors about you out of jealousy. It doesn’t necessarily have anything to do with him being an Alpha pretending to be a Beta.”
【Master, what if Yan Zui still doesn’t believe you?】 Xiaoman asked.
Qi Yunwei had already anticipated this. Faced with choosing between the one who had drugged her and a trusted bodyguard, she would naturally place her faith in the bodyguard.
[Don’t worry. It doesn’t matter if she doesn’t believe me now,] Qi Yunwei replied.
She sighed with a hint of disappointment and looked at Yan Zui with concern. “Even if he’s not an Alpha, the footage is proof enough that Qin Lifeng isn’t a good person. If you don’t want to replace him, that’s fine, but at least be more careful around him.”
“Mm. I know what I’m doing.” Yan Zui’s cold expression softened slightly.
Qi Yunwei stayed in the office until the start of the afternoon shift. As she opened the door to leave, she ran into Qin Lifeng again.
His gaze was dark and heavy. Qi Yunwei cast him a disdainful glance, then muttered just loud enough for him to hear as she passed: “Hmph. What’s a bodyguard acting so arrogant for?”
Qin Lifeng’s arm muscles tensed instantly.
Qi Yunwei strode away without looking back. His brooding eyes followed her retreating figure until she disappeared. Only then did he adjust his expression and step into the office.
“President Yan.” Qin Lifeng stopped before Yan Zui’s desk.
She lifted her gaze at him, noticing his restrained expression, as though he wanted to speak but hesitated. “If you have something to say, say it.”
Suppressing the anger Qi Yunwei had provoked, Qin Lifeng followed his plan. “President Yan, when I was in the cafeteria, I overheard people talking about Qi Yunwei. She, she”
At the mention of her name, Yan Zui’s brows tightened. Her dark eyes turned cold. “What about her?”
Unable to contain his frustration, Qin Lifeng snapped, “Qi Yunwei is trash. She doesn’t deserve you.”
He immediately pulled out his phone, opened a document, and set it in front of her. “President Yan, these are her past misdeeds. The list is endless. Please see for yourself.”
Yan Zui had just received a similar file from Qi Yunwei but hadn’t had the chance to look through it. Now seemed as good a time as any.
As she read, Qin Lifeng studied her face. Her brows knit tighter with each line. Though her expression stayed calm, he felt a knot of unease forming in his chest.
She finished quickly, returned the phone, and asked evenly, “And what exactly are you trying to say with this?”
Qin Lifeng’s heart raced. “President Yan, no one in this company believes Qi Yunwei is worthy of you. You should be with an outstanding Alpha, not with her.”
Her lashes lowered, hiding the emotions in her eyes. Her voice was light, almost indifferent. “You’re right. But where would I find such an outstanding Alpha? I’ve already been marked by Qi Yunwei. No Alpha would want an Omega who bears another’s mark.”
Qin Lifeng’s lips trembled, as if he could no longer suppress his feelings. “President Yan, I”
“What?” Yan Zui lifted her gaze.
Her black eyes held the depth of a dark blue sea, and when the cold night wind swept through them, Qin Lifeng suddenly snapped back to reality. “No, it’s nothing. I only hope you’ll think it over carefully. Staying with Qi Yunwei won’t bring you happiness.”
That afternoon, Yan Zui had to visit a branch office. Qin Lifeng went to the underground garage to fetch the car.
It wasn’t until he stepped outside that he realized he was drenched in sweat.
He had nearly blurted out his true intentions just now. If not for the last shred of reason restraining him, he would have openly offered himself.
Not yet. At least not while he was still just her bodyguard.
Once Qin Lifeng left, Yan Zui used WeChat to contact her best friend, Huang Momo, asking her to investigate his real identity.
Huang Momo: His real identity? Are you saying there’s something wrong with Qin Lifeng? He’s been by your side for over a year!
Yan Zui: Some things happened recently. I’m starting to have doubts.
Huang Momo: Leave it to me. My mom knows lots of private detectives.
Huang Momo’s mother had been in menopause since last year and suspected her husband of keeping a mistress. She’d hired several well-known detectives, but after all this time, they’d turned up nothing.
Huang Momo: By the way, how have things been between you and Qi Yunwei these past two days? Nothing happened, right?
Yan Zui: Something happened.
Huang Momo: She bullied you? She dared bully you?
Yan Zui: No.
Yan Zui hesitated for a moment before deciding to tell her everything. Maybe Momo could help her figure out a solution.
Yan Zui: We moved into my city apartment. My dad had Uncle Jiang follow us to monitor, so I have no choice but to share a bed with Qi Yunwei.
Huang Momo: What? You’re sharing a bed? Did she do anything to you?
Yan Zui: No. If anything, it’s me. I never knew I had a habit of hugging people in my sleep. These past two mornings, I’ve woken up holding her.
Huang Momo: Wait, what? You’re hugging Qi Yunwei?
Huang Momo: Couldn’t it be her scheming? Maybe she’s dissatisfied with just being a “marking tool” and is trying to move up by getting closer to you?
Yan Zui: I thought about that too, but
Taking a deep breath, Yan Zui described what she’d seen:
Yan Zui: On the second night, I even put a pillow between us. But when I woke up, I was in her arms, and the pillow was on the floor.
Huang Momo: You and I used to sleep together all the time as kids, but you never hugged me. Something’s fishy here. Don’t blame yourself just yet. Here’s an idea—install a hidden camera in your bedroom, one with night vision.
Tomorrow you’ll know the truth.
Yan Zui: Good idea.
After work, Yan Zui didn’t let Qin Lifeng follow her. She drove herself to buy a wall clock with a hidden pinhole camera. When she returned, Qi Yunwei was watching TV in the living room. Yan Zui calmly went straight to the bedroom, hung the clock on the wall facing the bed, then checked her phone to confirm the camera’s angle. Satisfied it captured the bed clearly, she changed into loungewear and went downstairs for dinner.
That night, before bed, Yan Zui placed a folded quilt between them, stacking it tall and narrow. Even if she wanted to hug something in her sleep, she would grab the quilt first instead of Qi Yunwei.
She only closed her eyes after making sure Qi Yunwei had fallen asleep.
Her body was exhausted, but her mind buzzed with anticipation of the plan. No matter how long she lay there, sleep didn’t come easily.
At last, sheer fatigue pulled her under, and she drifted off without realizing it.
Because of her worry about the results, she woke unusually early.
Opening her eyes, she immediately checked her position.
And just as she feared—once again, she was in Qi Yunwei’s arms.
