I Have the Aura of a Supporting Character in Yuri Novels - Chapter 89
Listening to the rain in a dark room brings a sense of security, a feeling of being far from the world’s hustle and bustle, replaced by pure tranquility. On a single sofa, two figures are intertwined. Tang Ruorui, even without the lights on, can see the person above her clearly. The other woman’s restrained expression and warm breath are like a fatal poison. Tang Ruorui caresses Zhu Yun’s cheek, feeling her passionate lips, which makes her unable to resist. Shedding her youthful awkwardness, she fully expresses her deep affection for Zhu Yun.
A rich fragrance fills the room, intoxicating and enchanting. Zhu Yun remembers the first time she saw Tang Ruorui it was also a rainy day. The subtle scent drew her in, and from that day on, Zhu Yun discovered that her neighbor was not human.
The kiss is intense. Zhu Yun holds Tang Ruorui tightly, as if trying to embed her into her own body. Her slender fingers run through Tang Ruorui’s hair. In this dark night, they embrace with a kind of sacred devotion.
In the car earlier, Tang Ruorui had boldly made a certain request. Zhu Yun met her gaze in silence for a moment, said nothing, but simply sped up the car. They both might not remember who initiated their first kiss, but Zhu Yun only remembers Tang Ruorui’s soft lips and the thick scent of her body, as they accompanied each other in falling into this ocean of love.
The rain outside seems to be in perfect sync with them. As soon as they entered the door, the rain poured down. The damp scent of rain mixed with the fragrant floral perfume, promising a sleepless night.
“Morning, Sister Zhu Yun.”
Zhu Yun sips her coffee, smiling as she greets her colleagues. However, her path is blocked by Zhao Xin, who puts an arm around her shoulder with a mischievous look. Having known her for so many years, Zhu Yun immediately knows Zhao Xin wants something.
Zhu Yun shrugs off her embrace and enters her office. “You’re like a weasel greeting a chicken,” she says impatiently.
Zhao Xin, unhappy, takes over Zhu Yun’s office chair and starts eating the snacks on the desk. “How can you insult yourself like that?” she retorts.
Zhu Yun scoffs at her. She leans against the desk, comfortable since no one else is around. With a careless smile on her beautiful face, Zhu Yun opens a bag of chips and starts eating, ignoring the overly enthusiastic Zhao Xin.
Zhao Xin gestures towards Zhu Yun, smiling in a fawning manner. “Zhu Yun, do you remember the class reunion I mentioned a while ago?”
The crunching of the chips is loud, as if nothing is more important than this bag of tomato-flavored chips.
Zhao Xin shakes Zhu Yun’s arm, drawing out her words. “Zhu Yun~ listen to me!”
Zhu Yun is a soft touch, and coquettishness works on her but she’s also a hypocrite who only responds to it from certain people. She shudders and laughs, scolding Zhao Xin. “Just talk normally, don’t be so gross.”
“Gross now? Who was flirting on the phone two days ago? You’ve definitely gotten together with that woman next door, haven’t you? I have to say, you’re a sly one. You won over her daughter first, then used the daughter to get to the mom. I feel so sorry for that poor woman you tricked.”
Zhu Yun playfully kicks her leg with the tip of her shoe. “I didn’t trick her. It’s mutual affection, isn’t it? I am in a relationship, but don’t be so jealous.”
Zhao Xin’s curiosity is piqued. She can’t miss out on her friend’s gossip. For the “iron tree” Zhu Yun to finally “blossom,” the woman must be a special one. A good person couldn’t possibly fall for the cunning Zhu Yun, right? Impossible.
“Let me meet her sometime.”
Zhu Yun gives her a sideways look and boasts, “I guess that’s not impossible. Let’s set a time. You can come to my place for dinner.”
“Is she cooking?”
Zhu Yun snatches the bag of snacks from her. She had originally bought them for Tang Ruorui, but now that Tang Ruorui is in her adult form, she’s lost interest in these little treats. So Zhu Yun eats them herself to relax. Every office worker needs their “slacking off” time, and hers is eating snacks.
There’s no way Zhu Yun would let Tang Ruorui cook; she dotes on her too much.
“I’ll cook, she’ll eat, and you’ll come help me in the kitchen.”
Zhao Xin points a trembling finger at Zhu Yun, looking hurt. “You heartless woman, I’m a guest! And you’re ordering me around?”
Zhu Yun smiles slyly. “Didn’t you really want to meet her? You came to me yourself.”
Her perfect girlfriend is elegant and an excellent cook. To meet her, you have to pay a price. Zhu Yun is a model “bad friend.” Zhao Xin childishly sulks, scowling as she snatches back the chips, stuffing them into her mouth without a care for her image. Anyone else seeing this would be surprised, as Zhao Xin’s public persona is that of a sophisticated, refined woman who enjoys flower arranging and tea ceremonies. Stealing someone’s snacks is completely out of character.
“Fine, fine, I’ll be your helper! I, Zhao Xin, can do it! I got my lawyer’s license, is there anything I can’t do?”
Zhu Yun smiles. “Stop joking. What about the reunion? Is the time set?”
Zhao Xin complains bitterly. “The time is not just set; the class president even booked a five-star hotel. Do you remember that ‘King of Gambling’ from Hong Kong we met a few years ago? Our class president, by some stroke of luck, married his youngest son and became a rich wife. She kept it a secret until she told me on the phone yesterday.”
“The ‘King of Gambling’s’ youngest son? Well, congratulations to her. I remember she wrote in my yearbook that her wish was to marry a rich man.”
Zhao Xin chews her snacks loudly. “Ugh, I always thought that while college reunions might get corrupted, high school reunions would stay pure. After all, we had a few years of simple friendship. But I guess even high school reunions are getting mixed up with too much self-interest.”
Zhu Yun is always relaxed about such things. “We don’t have to go, you know.”
“Why not? Just because the class president is doing well doesn’t mean we’re doing badly. You have to go with me. Without you, they’ll start gossiping about our relationship, and I won’t let them have that satisfaction.”
Zhu Yun can’t argue with Zhao Xin. They were high school classmates and became good friends, but not best friends, until they went to the same university, and their friendship deepened. “We’re a team.”
“So it’s settled. Don’t change your mind.”
Zhao Xin opens a drawer to find a sticky note. She writes down the date and hotel name and sticks it on the computer screen where Zhu Yun will see it every time she looks up, as if afraid Zhu Yun will back out.
“I know, I know. You’re so naggy.”
Zhu Yun, who has been standing in her heels for a while, is getting tired. She turns and walks to the sofa. Her wide-leg trousers elongate her legs and figure. Her black hair falls over her shoulders, giving her an air of calm elegance.
“By the way, what did Li Ke’er do to you? This business trip wasn’t a nice one. Others might not know your nature, but I do.” Zhao Xin plays with a cigarette lighter from the drawer. Its silver-white color gives it a cold, mechanical feel. If smoking were allowed in Zhu Yun’s office, Zhao Xin would light one up, just to experience the satisfying flick of the lid.
Zhu Yun’s eyes flicker, and she smiles faintly. “It was a private matter between us, related to my girlfriend.”
Zhao Xin nods in understanding. This is how adults work; they know when to speak and when to stop. “Did you solve it?” Zhao Xin asks, then immediately hits her mouth a few times, joking, “Is there anything you can’t solve? My question was a stupid one.”
She can’t help but touch the lighter again. “Can you give me this lighter? The brand is really good. I’ll buy one next time.”
“Take it.” Zhu Yun’s phone in her pocket vibrates. She takes it out and sees a message from Tang Ruorui. Her gaze softens a look she only has for someone she loves.
Zhao Xin is surprised. “You’re just giving it to me? I thought you’d at least scold me.”
This is a limited edition. A friend had given the lighter to Zhu Yun. As for that friend’s intentions, Zhao Xin doesn’t know, because the person got married soon after. This left Zhao Xin very confused and questioning whether her “gaydar” was broken.
Zhu Yun never cared much about the lighter; it was just a tool to light things. She raises an eyebrow and asks with a smile, “Why would I scold you?”
“This is from Tao… Never mind.”
Her hesitation makes Zhu Yun remember the woman who gave her the lighter. “Are you talking about Tao Yichun?” Zhu Yun asks.
“Yes, my lady, do you think there’s a second person named Tao who would give you a lighter?”
Zhu Yun smiles. “What about her?”
“Zhu Yun, don’t you really know she liked you back then?”
Zhu Yun shrugs. “I never thought about it. She was just a client, and I helped her win a divorce case.”
Now that Zhu Yun has brought up Tao Yichun, Zhao Xin can’t hold back anymore. “The way she looked at you was shady. Back then, I was wondering when she would confess to you. And that lighter was her confession. I guess I was overthinking it. Nothing ever happened between you two.”
Zhu Yun can’t help but laugh. “I didn’t have feelings for her. When I meet someone I truly love, I’d crash her wedding and steal her away even if she was getting married.”
Zhao Xin teases her. “So you’ve met that person now?”
Zhu Yun smiles gently. “She’s the one who made me quit smoking.”
She is willing to change for the person she loves, because that’s Zhu Yun’s kind of love.
Meanwhile, far away at the talent agency, Tang Ruorui is meeting her new agent. Her previous one, Rongrong, has resigned and left the company. All the contracts she was holding were taken back. Rongrong had a guilty conscience and, after meeting Li Ke’er, realized she couldn’t take any chances. After discussing it with her family, Rongrong decided to cut her losses. It was Li Ke’er who warned her; if she didn’t learn her lesson, she might have been invited for “tea” with the authorities. But before Rongrong left, she paid a lot of back taxes, which convinced Li Ke’er to let her go for good.
Just then, Tang Ruorui hears the office door open. She quickly replies to Zhu Yun’s message and puts her phone away. She stands up and shakes hands with the new agent, a plain-looking, middle-aged woman. In an agency full of handsome men and beautiful women, she looks unremarkable. But a dark glint passes through Tang Ruorui’s deep-set eyes because she realizes her new agent is not human.
Jing Tong smiles warmly. “I never expected to meet a fellow kind in the same company.”
Tang Ruorui’s smile is distant and polite. This is also a surprise for her.
Jing Tong gestures to a chair, and Tang Ruorui sits opposite her. “You rarely came to the company before, did you? No wonder I didn’t sense your presence. If I had known you were one of us, I would have taken you from Rongrong, saving you from all those years of suppressed resources.”
The company knew a lot about Rongrong’s mess. Jing Tong was initially reluctant when told to take over another artist, but now she has changed her mind. “I’m older than you, so you can call me Sister Jing.”
Tang Ruorui purses her lips and asks, “Sister Jing, do you know the details about the drama Rongrong wanted me to be in?”
Before meeting Tang Ruorui, she had looked through the mess Rongrong left behind. She explains, “It’s normal for you to not understand these things since you’re new to the industry. The male lead for that show is already set it’s Chen Wei’an, who’s been quite popular lately. The person who signed you on was Chen Wei’an’s agent, probably trying to poach you from Rongrong. He has a keen eye and saw your potential, so he wanted to use a role to lure you in. Once the contract was signed, the story would change. This is a common trick in the industry.”
Tang Ruorui smiles meaningfully. This might not have anything to do with fake contracts. For Chen Wei’an’s agent to go to such lengths to get close to her, it’s likely orchestrated by the fox demon next to Chen Wei’an.
“I see. Then please help me turn it down, Sister Jing.”
Jing Tong has no objections but worries Tang Ruorui might be disappointed. She says reassuringly, “That script and character aren’t right for you. Your image is great; there’s no need to waste your time on such a role. I’ll get you an audition in a few days. Prepare well; this is your chance to turn things around.”
This shows how petty Rongrong was. A more famous artist would bring her more benefits, but Rongrong could only see the immediate profit and never thought about the future.
“Okay, I understand.”
Jing Tong makes a call, asking someone to come over quickly. At the same time, she explains to Tang Ruorui, “This is your assistant. You need someone with you, at the very least to remind you of your daily schedule.”
Jing Tong quickly gets into her role as Tang Ruorui’s agent. Even though Tang Ruorui has been in the industry for three years, she still gives her some instructions. When Tang Ruorui hears the phrase, “rising artists should avoid dating,” she presses her lips together and raises her hand.
“What is it?” Jing Tong asks, taking a sip of water to clear her throat.
Tang Ruorui looks shy. “Sister Jing, I just started dating a few days ago.”
“…”
Jing Tong takes another sip of water to calm down. With a disappointed frown, she asks, “Is it with one of us?”
Tang Ruorui blinks her clear eyes and smiles faintly. “No, it’s with a human.”
This statement surprises Jing Tong even more than an artist dating. Jing Tong blurts out, “You’re dating a human? Have you forgotten about the White Snake who scared Xu Xian to death when she revealed her true form?”
Tang Ruorui knows Jing Tong is worried about her. “Sister Jing, she’s not an ordinary human. She’s met Jiu You, the leader of the Special Department, so she already knows what my true form is.”
Jing Tong grasps her wrist. Their energies intertwine, allowing Jing Tong to recognize Tang Ruorui’s identity. She is shocked. “I’ve stumbled upon the reclusive Udumbara Flower, who has been hidden for so many years? I should go buy a lottery ticket.”
As a sycamore tree that has lived for centuries, she knows about the Udumbara Flower, the most mysterious race in the demon world. They say this race is favored by heaven, but Jing Tong thinks they have a difficult path.
Thinking of Tang Ruorui’s true form, Jing Tong feels a pang of pity. “You must be very careful. The entertainment industry is not peaceful. Take Chen Wei’an’s agent, for example—he’s a fox demon.”
Tang Ruorui feels a sense of finality. If Chen Wei’an’s agent is a fox demon, then everything makes sense.
Jing Tong realizes this, too. She says sternly, “You’ve been targeted!”
Tang Ruorui remains fearless. Her sharp eyes are cold as frost. She says calmly, “My feud with the fox tribe is a matter of life and death. This is something I have to face sooner or later.”
Jing Tong sighs with a heavy heart, patting her shoulder. “Maybe your Udumbara race will get a chance for survival.”
Tang Ruorui doesn’t put her hopes in a fantasy. She has never hated her identity, but this time, she regrets being an Udumbara Flower. If she were to die, Zhu Yun would be very sad. She doesn’t want that, but this is her fate.
This conversation makes Jing Tong firmly refuse Bai Xuaqiu’s invitation. Their conversation is filled with a confrontational tension. He stands by the floor-to-ceiling window. After hearing Jing Tong’s words, he narrows his seductive fox eyes, thinking for a moment. “It’s a shame I can’t cooperate with Miss Tang this time.”
“The role of a fox demon doesn’t suit Ruorui, so I must decline your offer, Mr. Bai.”
A low chuckle escapes Bai Xuaqiu’s throat. He says meaningfully, “Then I look forward to our next cooperation.”
The call ends. Bai Xuaqiu huffs in frustration. He turns to the white fox on the sofa. Bai Xuaqiu respectfully kneels. “Young master, please allow your subordinate to capture Tang Ruorui. Your plan to take human form cannot be compromised.”
A fluffy white fox is curled up on the black sofa, its long tail hanging down without a single flaw. Bai Que closes his eyes and laughs lazily. The voice of a young man sounds like the most pleasant musical instrument, elegant and noble.
“Jiu You hid her for three years and intentionally placed her in the entertainment industry. Even her previous agent was arranged by Jiu You. If it weren’t for the blooming period, we wouldn’t have been able to find Tang Ruorui. Jiu You knows you well; the most dangerous place is the safest. So Tang Ruorui has been active in the entertainment industry for three years, making you, this shortsighted fox, run around in circles.”
Bai Que slowly opens his dark purple eyes. He is the young master of the fox tribe and is entitled to the highest quality Udumbara Flower. So Jiu You and Tang Ruorui are his choices. But Jiu You joined the Special Department and has humans on her side, and Bai Que doesn’t want to fall out with humans. That leaves him with Tang Ruorui.
He grooms his fur. “Find a way to take care of Chen Wei’an. He is no longer a suitable scapegoat. Our plan has been exposed.”
Bai Que’s voice gets louder, filled with murderous intent. Bai Xuaqiu’s forehead is covered in cold sweat as he kneels in fear.
He stares at Bai Xuaqiu, a look of hatred and confusion in his eyes. He still can’t understand where things went wrong, and why the fox tribe’s plan failed. Bai Xuhong died, and Bai Xuyan died. Tang Ruorui is indeed powerful. It’s a shame they couldn’t kill the injured human, Ding Wenjun.
He puts his front paws together, resting his chin on them, and repeats the same question he’s asked many times before. “Why are they all dead? At least one of them should have survived.”
That way, Bai Que would know what happened in those two battles. Due to the deaths of Bai Xuhong and Bai Xuyan, the fox tribe is still unaware of Zhu Yun’s existence. Chen Wei’an, though alive, was unconscious at a convenient time and had no idea how powerful Zhu Yun was. Because of this, Bai Que and the fox tribe have overlooked Zhu Yun several times by mistake, which has given Tang Ruorui a chance to survive.
“Young master, do you want me to kill Chen Wei’an?”
“A useless pawn who knows nothing. Just get rid of him.”
In this long dark night, many dangers lurk. Sometimes, when you open your eyes, you don’t see tomorrow, but the arrival of death.
In the dead of night, humans are fast asleep. In the moonlight, a nimble figure climbs up the wall.
Xiao Zhu! Wake up! Xiao Zhu! You’re damn…
A catchy square-dancing tune is blasted by No. 857. Zhu Yun wakes up with a jolt in the middle of the night, holding her head in pain.
Don’t scold me! Don’t! This is the only way you’ll wake up.
Zhu Yun runs her fingers through her black hair and takes a deep breath. Okay, okay. So, someone’s coming to kill her in the middle of the night?
Her sudden movement makes Tang Ruorui, who is sleeping beside her, open her eyes in alarm. Tang Ruorui nuzzles her back, her voice soft. “Had a nightmare?”
Zhu Yun caresses her face and gives her a light kiss. “Not a nightmare. Something is coming for us.”
Whether human or demon, someone’s getting a beating tonight. Hmph, I get cranky when I’m woken up! Even my wife’s kisses can’t soothe me when I’m like this!
