I Have the Aura of a Supporting Character in Yuri Novels - Chapter 85
The night air was cool. When Tang Ruorui, wrapped in Zhuyun’s windbreaker, stepped out of the elevator, she saw Zhuyun being stopped by a woman. The gentle smile on Tang Ruorui’s lips instantly turned cold. She said in a detached tone, “Why are you here?”
The agent, Rong Rong, was just lamenting that Zhuyun was mute when she suddenly heard Tang Ruorui’s voice. Rong Rong subconsciously glanced at Zhuyun. Although Tang Ruorui wasn’t a very famous celebrity, she had some fame online. This was why Rong Rong had arranged for her to live in this neighborhood, as the security was decent and prevented paparazzi from taking sneaky photos.
She coughed a few times, pretending not to know Tang Ruorui, and stood aside. While Zhuyun wasn’t looking, Rong Rong gave Tang Ruorui a meaningful look, wanting to tell her not to show her face right now and to wait until the outsider had left.
Rong Rong’s gaze swept over Tang Ruorui’s face, and a hint of anger flashed in her eyes. This person was so improper she didn’t even wear a mask when she went out. Was she afraid the paparazzi wouldn’t find her? Or had she lost her mind after falling in love?
When Rong Rong thought about Tang Ruorui secretly having a clandestine relationship behind her back, she couldn’t help but feel a surge of rage. She had originally thought this was a wooden beauty who would listen to her and earn her money. Now it seemed she had misjudged her. This wasn’t a naive beauty; she was a ticking time bomb!
Rong Rong would have accepted a relationship for other artists, but Tang Ruorui was different. She had always been so sensible. Why was she resisting her now? So Rong Rong suspected that Tang Ruorui’s girlfriend had led her astray.
Zhuyun saw the agent’s signal and took a few steps to the side, blocking Rong Rong’s view of Tang Ruorui.
Tang Ruorui’s hands were in her pockets. The windbreaker was a gentle gesture left by the contradictory Zhuyun, chasing away the late-night autumn chill for her.
A subtle fragrance wafted through the air, and Zhuyun once again caught a scent related to Tang Ruorui. Although Tang Ruorui hadn’t moved, Zhuyun intuitively knew that her punishment was over.
“I was so stifled,” Zhuyun suddenly blurted out, making Rong Rong jump.
Rong Rong frowned and retorted, “Weren’t you mute?”
Zhuyun gave a fake smile. “If I were mute, who would sue you, huh?”
Rong Rong found Zhuyun’s voice increasingly familiar. When Zhuyun mentioned “suing,” Rong Rong finally remembered where she had heard that voice. It was the woman who had confronted her so forcefully on the phone the other day!
“It’s you!”
Rong Rong wanted to slap herself. How could she have been so blind as to value this woman’s potential? So what if she was a little pretty and a little classy? How could she possibly be a star?
Just then, Rong Rong sneered a few times, as if she had discovered some shocking secret. She said, “You recognized me long ago, didn’t you? You deliberately pretended to be mute to make me look foolish? Fine, fine. Tang Ruorui, do you still want to make it in this industry? Are you sure you want to ruin your career for this girlfriend? Don’t be foolish. The reason I came to you today is to stop you from making a mistake. You’ll be famous one day. What’s the point of being in a relationship with a woman like her? When you become famous, you can have any woman you want. Why get hung up on her?”
Rong Rong glanced at Zhuyun triumphantly. She had broken up countless artists before, and same-sex couples like this were as fragile as glass, easily shattered with a light tap.
She took a script from her bag and shook it, showing it off. “This is a costume drama produced by a top-tier TV network with a famous director and screenwriter. For a small celebrity like you, getting a role is a huge blessing. But you’re very lucky there’s a female lead role that suits you perfectly. She’s a fox demon who escaped to the human world. I’ve already submitted your information to the director, and whether you get the role depends on my word.”
Zhuyun couldn’t help but laugh out loud. This Rong Rong really knew how to press a sore spot. Who did Tang Ruorui hate the most? The fox tribe! To ask her to play a fox demon wouldn’t Tang Ruorui tear the script to shreds?
Her guess was correct. Tang Ruorui’s expression turned frigid. Seeing Rong Rong’s hideous face, Tang Ruorui snatched the script and, with a perfect arc, threw it into the trash can. Tang Ruorui curled her crimson lips and said, “I’m not acting in it.”
Zhuyun let out another chuckle, and seeing Rong Rong’s stunned expression, Zhuyun added fuel to the fire. “I didn’t recognize you at all at first. It was only when you introduced yourself that I realized you were the agent Rong Rong. So I need to clarify something I wasn’t mute for you, but because Tang Ruorui told me to shut up.”
Rong Rong’s brows furrowed into a tight knot. She gnashed her teeth and said, “So I was just part of your little romantic game?”
She had clearly misinterpreted Zhuyun’s explanation, thinking Zhuyun’s mischief was just following Tang Ruorui’s orders, not realizing Zhuyun had been under a spell cast by Tang Ruorui, the flower demon.
Zhuyun spread her hands innocently. “Sigh, smart people really can’t communicate with idiots.”
The insults had been thrown, the script had been discarded, and Zhuyun felt it was time for them to go home.
She used her key to open the door and said, with what sounded like genuine concern, “Go home early. Don’t let the cold air freeze your brain.”
Zhuyun pushed Tang Ruorui inside. Rong Rong listened to Zhuyun’s continuous mockery and pointed at Tang Ruorui, scolding, “Are you really going to let this woman ruin your career?!”
Tang Ruorui suddenly turned and smiled back, her tone laced with sarcasm. “Even without her, do you think my career would have continued to be smooth? I was the one who succeeded in that audition, but you gave the role to another artist and had me play a leftover role. My career would only be ruined by you. So what right do you have to lecture me?”
She seemed to have remembered something, and her captivating smile made Tang Ruorui’s face even more dazzling. She said, “Your pollen allergy must have been severe that month, wasn’t it? Fortunately, it wasn’t life-threatening.”
Zhuyun looked on. At this moment, Tang Ruorui was like a rose with thorns, bold and beautiful. Zhuyun raised an eyebrow, thinking she had been a little white flower, but it turned out she was the only naive one.
Rong Rong nervously took a few steps back. She felt that the woman in front of her had become a stranger, not the easygoing Tang Ruorui she remembered. She was… dangerous.
She had realized that Tang Ruorui was not as easily bullied as before, or perhaps Tang Ruorui had never been a pushover to begin with.
Rong Rong changed her tune, lowering her stance and trying to get back on Tang Ruorui’s good side. She said, “Those were just small matters. The reason I gave your role to someone else was because there was a bigger, better project waiting for you. Ruorui, I’m an open-minded agent. You two can keep dating if you want, just don’t get caught by the paparazzi. But you have to take this role. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. There are so many other artists waiting for this role!”
Tang Ruorui shook her head. She wasn’t at all moved by the prospect of this great project. To ask her to play a fox demon she would rather not act at all.
Neither Zhuyun nor Tang Ruorui were swayed by her silver tongue. Zhuyun cut straight to the point. “She’s just a small celebrity. To be noticed by a big production can you guarantee there’s no danger involved?”
Tang Ruorui silently shot a look at Zhuyun. She could call herself a no-name, but others couldn’t!
She was taller than Rong Rong, and leaned against the doorframe, looking down at the two-faced agent. Zhuyun laughed mockingly, “She needs a break right now. Don’t arrange any more scripts. As for her contract, Li Ke’er will personally come to see you about it.” With that, Zhuyun closed the door.
The sound of the door closing made Rong Rong shiver. Her eyes were dull and vacant.
Before coming here, she had prepared many words to criticize Tang Ruorui and insult her girlfriend, but now she felt like a clown. She hadn’t been the domineering big shot she had planned to be; instead, she had been scolded like a child. The most ridiculous part was that she couldn’t even utter a single word in rebuttal.
Rong Rong swallowed hard, feeling that this matter was spiraling in a direction she couldn’t control.
She felt like a drenched chicken, having failed to assert her authority and now utterly dejected.
Rong Rong swallowed her disgust and picked up the script from the trash can, muttering, “Damn it, I wish I hadn’t come to see Tang Ruorui tonight!”
She had told them on the phone that she would see Tang Ruorui the next day, but when Tang Ruorui didn’t show up for two days, Rong Rong was furious and came straight to her door. This impulsive visit had left her with a bitter taste of humiliation it was an absolute disgrace!
Rong Rong looked hatefully at the door, and one malicious plan after another formed in her mind.
Just as she got into the elevator to leave, a call from Li Ke’er came through, and Rong Rong answered.
The commotion outside had nothing to do with Zhuyun and Tang Ruorui. After Tang Ruorui finished dealing with things on her phone, she saw Zhuyun, who had already changed into her loungewear.
The loose, casual clothes made her look relaxed and carefree. Her slightly wavy long hair had been braided, and the loose strands near her ears gave her a playful and charming look. This version of Zhuyun had less maturity and more innocence.
“Why are you looking at me? All done?” Zhuyun said, taking a bite of a banana, glancing at the docile Tang Ruorui sitting nearby.
Tang Ruorui pursed her lips and avoided Zhuyun’s gaze, as if this would help her maintain her composure.
Tang Ruorui said, “I should go home.”
Zhuyun raised her voice. “Why go home?”
“I’m not a child anymore. I don’t need you to take care of me,” Tang Ruorui replied.
Zhuyun knew she was right. Tang Ruorui was now an adult, not the “Rui Rui” who needed to be looked after.
The banana in her hand was sweet, but Zhuyun couldn’t taste it.
She quickly finished the banana, tossed it into the trash can, and sat down next to Tang Ruorui. She nodded, not looking at Tang Ruorui, and just said, “Okay.”
Tang Ruorui put her phone in her pocket and said softly, “Thank you for your help these past few days.”
She couldn’t help but look at the silent Zhuyun. She had no reason to stay here. Being taken care of by Zhuyun as a child was one thing, but how could she continue to trouble Zhuyun?
What if… what if she annoyed her?
Tang Ruorui stood up, but her expression changed in the next second as Zhuyun grabbed her wrist.
Zhuyun tightened her grip and said, “Don’t go. My bed is a double bed, there’s enough room for both of us.”
She slowly looked up, her eyes soft, and gave a very gentle smile.
She looked at Tang Ruorui and said, “Besides, you’re still wearing my jacket.”
“So, don’t go.”
That night, Tang Ruorui still slept on the right side of the bed. She looked at the two pillows and one blanket, her expression shy and embarrassed. Her ears, hidden by her hair, seemed to be burning. She regretted why she had listened to Zhuyun, why a simple touch of her hand had made her change her mind.
She sighed helplessly. When she heard the sound of Zhuyun pushing open the door and coming in, Tang Ruorui’s heart beat unusually fast. She wasn’t human, so a faster heartbeat wouldn’t cause her physical discomfort, but Tang Ruorui became nervous because of it, as if something embarrassing was about to happen.
“Why aren’t you under the covers?”
Zhuyun had just finished showering, and she was radiating warmth and a lovely scent, both of which stirred Tang Ruorui’s heart.
Zhuyun offered her arm to Tang Ruorui and said with a smile, “Smell the new shower gel I bought. I thought it smelled a lot like your flowers, so I bought it. But I still think it’s not as good as your scent.”
Then she said something that made Tang Ruorui’s eyelashes flutter. Zhuyun said, “Is your You Tan clan all this fragrant?”
Tang Ruorui silently shook her head. Zhuyun asked with curiosity, “Then who’s the most fragrant?”
Tang Ruorui tapped her fingers together and said shyly, “If… if there are no accidents, it should be me.”
Zhuyun moved closer and agreed, “As expected. Looks like the person next to me is a flower fairy with the best scent.”
Tang Ruorui pushed the increasingly close Zhuyun away and said in a low voice, “You’re pushing me off the bed.”
“Hey, you’re exaggerating. Four of me could fit in this bed, so how could I push you off? If you don’t want me next to you, just say so. And here I was hugging you to sleep the other day.”
Zhuyun slipped under the covers. She had no idea why Tang Ruorui was being so awkward. This wasn’t the first time Tang Ruorui had slept in her bed, so why was she acting so weird?
Suddenly, Zhuyun’s eyes widened.
Wait a minute, in a sense, this really was the first time Tang Ruorui had slept in her bed.
Zhuyun moved closer and poked her back with a finger. When she didn’t get a response, Zhuyun simply lay on top of her to look at Tang Ruorui.
Tang Ruorui helplessly grabbed her mischievous right hand and asked, “Aren’t you going to sleep?”
“Hey, tell me the truth, are you shy?”
The only light in the bedroom was the nightlight, so Zhuyun couldn’t clearly see the shyness in Tang Ruorui’s expression. Tang Ruorui was annoyed with Zhuyun. Some things were better left unsaid, but this woman was just too much.
She turned around and, with a powerful pull, embraced Zhuyun. Tang Ruorui pulled the blanket up and said, “Sleep. If your mouth isn’t well-behaved, I’ll shut it for you.”
Zhuyun patted her face and asked with a smile, “How will you shut it for me?”
Tang Ruorui opened her eyes, her gaze intense and teasing. “What do you think?”
Zhuyun was the type who knew when to surrender. Realizing that asking another question might lead to trouble, she tilted her head and pretended to sleep.
A moment later, unable to resist her curiosity, Zhuyun risked asking, “The ‘shutting it’ you mentioned—is it with a spell, or… or that?”
“Okay, okay, don’t move, don’t move. I’m sleeping, I’m sleeping!”
Zhuyun saw Tang Ruorui about to make a move, so she grabbed her arm and hugged her tight, trapping Tang Ruorui. This time she was truly convinced and didn’t dare to provoke Tang Ruorui again.
So Zhuyun said sweetly, “Good night, Rui Rui.”
Hmph, whether you’re a grown-up or a kid, if I tell you to sleep in this bed, you will sleep in this bed!
The office was quiet until a phone call broke the peaceful atmosphere.
Zhuyun wasn’t in her office, but Zhao Xin, who had come to find her, heard the phone ringing. She decisively picked up the phone and went to the break room to find Zhuyun. There weren’t many places to go in the law firm, so the break room was the most likely spot.
Zhao Xin saw Zhuyun sitting there, basking in the sun. She shook the phone and said, “You came here to slack off and didn’t even bring your phone? Are you even a young person anymore? These days, even old people can’t leave their phones behind. Are you a person from ancient times?”
Zhao Xin gave her a hard pat on the shoulder, making Zhuyun wince in pain. “Nothing good ever happens when I see you. What do you want?” Zhuyun took the phone and smiled mischievously.
She chuckled. “It just goes to show how close we are. The moment I have something going on, you always seem to know. It’s no big deal, really. Our high school class monitor called me the other day to organize a class reunion. It’s been a few years since I’ve seen them, so I agreed. Zhuyun, are you coming?”
Zhuyun put a finger to her lips, telling Zhao Xin she needed to take the call before they could talk about anything else.
“Hello.”
“Hello, Sister Zhuyun. Long time no see, this is Chen Wei’an.”
On an ordinary afternoon, the male lead, Chen Wei’an, finally made his appearance.
His voice was clear and clean, and his words were tinged with a smile, making people feel drawn to him.
Zhuyun rested her chin on her hand and replied lazily to Chen Wei’an, “Long time no see. Do you need something?”
“Sister Zhuyun, you’ve helped me so many times in the past, and I’ve never forgotten your kindness. There’s no way I’d trouble you after all this time without good reason.” Chen Wei’an’s voice was as gentle as a spring breeze, and his low, smiling tone would have delighted his fans, but Zhuyun was unimpressed.
“It’s fine if you trouble me. I’m just destined to work hard. Don’t beat around the bush. For a big celebrity to call me, it must be something important, right?”
Zhuyun didn’t know Chen Wei’an’s intentions and was too lazy to play games with him.
Chen Wei’an seemed a bit troubled, and after a moment of hesitation, he said, “Sister Zhuyun, could we set up a time to meet? Don’t worry, I won’t let the paparazzi catch us. There’s just something I need your help with. My… my past relationship with my ex-girlfriend is being used against me. If I don’t give her money, she’ll definitely expose it, and I can’t let that happen right now. It will affect my career.”
Zhuyun raised an eyebrow and said blandly, “The police are more efficient at handling this than a lawyer.”
“Sister Zhuyun… please. I… I don’t trust anyone else here. I only trust you.”
Zhuyun quietly listened to his flattery. What a great word, “trust.” It was the same reason this Chen Wei’an had sold her out without a second thought in the original plot.
A suspicion lingered in Zhuyun’s mind.
Was he the one who caused the car accident in the original plot?
Zhuyun’s silence made Chen Wei’an uneasy, and he asked anxiously, “Sister Zhuyun, are you listening to me?”
“When should we meet?”
Chen Wei’an was relieved. He immediately suggested a time and place. As long as he could meet with Zhuyun, the rest would be easy.
“Thank you so much, Sister Zhuyun.”
Zhuyun exchanged a few polite words with him and then hung up. There was a hint of mockery in her smile. Zhao Xin, who was drinking coffee nearby, pursed her lips and said, “From the sound of it, the person on the phone was a celebrity, right?”
Zhuyun nodded. There was no need to hide such a small thing from Zhao Xin.
Zhao Xin winked and said, “A young man? Or a beautiful young woman? Are you no longer interested in your married neighbor?”
“Please, can you empty the dirty water out of your brain? There’s no young man and no beautiful young woman.”
Zhao Xin understood immediately and teased, “I get it, I get it. So, you’re saying the neighbor is your real partner!”
Zhuyun gave her a look of disgust. She finished the last of her coffee and got up to leave.
“Hey! You still haven’t said if you’re coming to the class reunion.”
Zhuyun laughed and said, “I’m a little busy lately. I’ll have to see. What date is the reunion? Send me a message closer to the time, and I’ll come if I have time.”
“Busy with what? Work or personal stuff?”
Zhuyun waved her hand. “Raising a child.”
Zhao Xin burst out laughing. “Seriously, girl? Have you become addicted to raising your neighbor’s child?”
“Mind your own business.”
The joy of raising a flower demon was something that normal people couldn’t understand.
And what was that joy? It was the uncontrollable fun of her changing size.
So when Zhuyun appeared in front of Chen Wei’an, holding the chubby-faced, yawning Tang Ruorui, Chen Wei’an was dumbfounded. He lowered his voice, afraid of waking the sleeping Tang Ruorui in her arms, and asked, “Sister Zhuyun, who… who is this child?”
Zhuyun put a hat on Tang Ruorui and cradled her bottom to make her more comfortable.
Zhuyun smiled gently and said, “This is my daughter. I didn’t tell you before, but I’m divorced and raising a child.”
She touched Tang Ruorui’s hair as if showing off a treasure and said, “Isn’t she cute? Oh, and where is that ex-girlfriend of yours?”
“…”
Silence was Chen Wei’an’s only response. How was he supposed to tell Zhuyun that he had planned on asking her to pretend to be his girlfriend?
