I Have the Aura of a Supporting Character in Yuri Novels - Chapter 25
The two women who had just entered the restaurant not long ago left again quickly. The waiter, surprised, ran to open the door for them. Seeing Tang Weixue’s arm draped over Zhuyun’s shoulder, he knew their relationship must be very close.
The temperature was dropping, and the night air was chilly. Zhuyun had just finished crying and was covered in sweat. She pulled off her scarf and didn’t hesitate to tie it around Tang Weixue’s neck. The warm-toned scarf looked a bit out of place with Tang Weixue’s outfit, but Zhuyun’s eyes curved into a smile. Tang Weixue was so beautiful that even this ill-fitting accessory couldn’t diminish her charm. Zhuyun gently stroked Tang Weixue’s long hair, but a rebellious strand wrapped around her fingertip, making Zhuyun furrow her brow in frustration.
“So clumsy.”
Tang Weixue’s voice was excellent, and when she lowered it, it felt like a soft feather brazenly tickling Zhuyun.
Zhuyun glared at her fiercely, ready to retort and start a fight. But Tang Weixue gave in, rubbing her face against the scarf that still held Zhuyun’s warmth. Her eyes were gentle, reflecting Zhuyun’s image. “It’s so warm,” she said. “I really like it.”
Zhuyun’s anger immediately dissipated. She felt that Tang Weixue was being uncharacteristically gentle, so she put her hands in her pockets and started walking forward. Tang Weixue leaned over and stuck to her side, her warm breath on Zhuyun’s neck, making Zhuyun regret giving away her scarf.
“Tang Weixue, can’t you walk properly!”
Tang Weixue chuckled. “You were calling me ‘Sister Tang’ in front of Bai Xiangming just now. How is it ‘Tang Weixue’ now that we’re outside? Oh, Zhuyun, you’re so heartless.”
As soon as she said this, Tang Weixue was momentarily dazed, because Bai Xiangming had said something similar over the phone before. She hadn’t expected to accuse Zhuyun of the same thing. It felt a little childish.
Her eyes rippled as she glanced at the pouting Zhuyun, but she quickly convinced her restless heart.
Tang Weixue’s lips curled into a smile. Let it be childish. Who could blame her for being so close to Zhuyun lately?
Zhuyun retorted defiantly, “I’ll call you whatever I want! I want to call you Tang Weixue right now, so what!”
“Good. It’s a very nice name. Keep calling it.”
Tang Weixue was completely at ease, not at all embarrassed by sticking to Zhuyun.
She rested her arm on Zhuyun’s shoulder and leaned against her. From their backs, Tang Weixue looked like a drunk person.
Zhuyun was amused by her shamelessness. “Tang Weixue, you’re so conceited!”
Despite her words, Zhuyun still thoughtfully put her other arm around Tang Weixue’s waist. This way, they both leaned on each other for support as they walked.
Zhuyun couldn’t understand how Tang Weixue had become like this. Just now in the private room, when she was scolding Bai Xiangming, her aura had been powerful. The arrogant and disdainful look in her eyes had been incredibly captivating, and Zhuyun had felt completely safe by her side.
Back then, Zhuyun’s mind had been a whirlwind of the past and the story, which was why she had accidentally burst into tears.
Crying was just an emotional release, and Zhuyun didn’t think of it as a sign of cowardice.
Still, crying in Tang Weixue’s arms felt a bit too embarrassing.
Finally, Zhuyun saw her car parked ahead. She shook her head, forcing herself not to think about it anymore. She had other things to do, like eating.
Just as Zhuyun’s hand touched the car door, she heard a questioning voice by her ear.
“Did you warn Bai Xiangming because of me? I’m sorry, I mean, were you protecting me?” Tang Weixue felt the first sentence was inappropriate, so she frowned, reconsidered, and then calmly added the second part.
Zhuyun tilted her head, pointed to her nose, and said, “Can’t I protect you? Or do you think I’m not capable of protecting you? Tang Weixue, I’m really going to get mad!”
Protection was just protection, a natural, subconscious reaction. She hadn’t thought about it that much; she just simply didn’t want Bai Xiangming to get close to Tang Weixue. Why was she so serious, asking such a strange question? Was this woman looking down on her? Even though she was skinny and weak, she was still very strong!
Zhuyun gnashed her teeth. If the situation allowed, she would have wanted to bite Tang Weixue.
Her anger grew as she saw the smile on Tang Weixue’s face. Just as she was about to speak again, Tang Weixue reached out and hugged her.
The hug was warm and soft. She bent slightly to hold Zhuyun. This arrogant and glamorous woman also had a vulnerable side. A strong and cold exterior didn’t define a whole person; humans were complex.
Tang Weixue’s embrace made Zhuyun freeze, as if she had caught a glimpse of this woman’s other side.
“You know, the first person who ever actively protected me was my mother.”
“You’re the second person I’ve ever met.”
She had built a cold shell around herself. Her father’s remarriage made Tang Weixue realize that the only paternal love she had would gradually fade, and it made her miss her mother, that gentle woman who always smiled at her, even more.
After so many years of experience, Tang Weixue believed she didn’t need anyone to give her a sense of security. She believed she had the ability to create that safety for others, but there were times when she got tired.
Everyone was so used to Tang Weixue’s assertiveness that those around her had long forgotten that she was still very young, with the same emotions as them. She wasn’t an omnipotent being.
Zhuyun’s lips curled playfully. She stood on her tiptoes, embracing her back, and said cockily, “Then shouldn’t you be nicer to me?”
The woman who was like a demon king now seemed like a pitiful little thing. What should she do? She really wanted to reach out and pat her head.
Maybe she should try it?
Zhuyun carefully stroked Tang Weixue’s long hair and said softly, “Be a good girl.”
Seeing Tang Weixue like this, she was even more unwilling to push her into the fire to be harmed by Bai Xiangming and his monstrous family.
Zhuyun’s eyes held a determined light. This time, she would protect Tang Weixue well!
The night wind was not kind, making people shiver, but inside the car on the way home, they didn’t feel the cold.
They weren’t afraid of the cold because they could use their home to escape the biting wind.
If home was a harbor, then the person beside you was the flame that drove away the cold.
The flame was not scorching; it was a gentle burn, the exclusive warmth of family that others could not get close to.
Winter slowly arrived, dressed in thick clothes just like humans, but her clothes were made of leaves and flowers, which was why most plants in winter were bare.
“Sorry, Miaomiao, I’m late.”
Zhuyun parked her new scooter and ran into the bubble tea shop. She was bundled up so well that her fair skin looked pink and tender, giving her a rosy, lovely complexion.
“Zhuyun, you look like you’ve gained a little weight.” Lin Miaomiao was Zhuyun’s classmate. They weren’t very close before, just casual acquaintances. But after Lin Miaomiao couldn’t help but tell Zhuyun what she had secretly seen, their friendship grew stronger over time.
Lin Miaomiao handed Zhuyun a cup of bubble tea and patted her hand with a relieved smile. “Seeing you like this, I feel at ease.”
She had never believed that Zhuyun was the one who stole the jade bracelet. Lin Miaomiao had accidentally seen Zhuyun working at a restaurant, where the salary wasn’t low. There was no reason for Zhuyun to risk stealing the bracelet. Besides, with what she had seen, Lin Miaomiao was even more convinced that Zhuyun had been framed by the malicious Nie Xuan and her friends.
Zhuyun touched her now-plump face and said cheerfully, “It’s good to be a little heavier. I was too skinny before.”
“Exactly! People shouldn’t be too fat or too skinny. You were always coughing at the beginning of the semester, probably because your immune system was weak. You have to take better care of yourself from now on.”
Zhuyun was more afraid of dying than anyone. She was very careful about her health now. Even if Lin Miaomiao didn’t say these things, she would no longer skip meals to save money like she used to.
“Zhuyun, one of my classmates opened an escape room. Do you want to try it out?”
School was out for break, and Lin Miaomiao had been thinking about Zhuyun, whom she hadn’t seen in a while. They often chatted on their phones and had been wanting to meet up, so she contacted Zhuyun as soon as the holiday started.
Zhuyun blinked. “An escape room?”
Lin Miaomiao came from a well-off family, and she sympathized with Zhuyun’s situation. Thinking of her classmate’s new escape room, she made a suggestion.
She nodded, hesitating. “Zhuyun, you’re still young and still growing. Don’t work as a nanny anymore; it’s too tiring.”
Zhuyun had great cooking skills, which Lin Miaomiao had discovered through their chats. Sometimes Zhuyun would intentionally send her pictures of food, making the hungry Lin Miaomiao, who was in class, almost cry with envy.
As she sent more and more food photos, Lin Miaomiao noticed that the decor in the pictures seemed very refined. One time, she accidentally looked up the plates and was shocked, rubbing her eyes to make sure she hadn’t misread the price.
Because of this, Zhuyun also learned for the first time how expensive the plates she used every day were.
Her background was no secret; all her classmates knew. If she said she was living in Tang Weixue’s house, no one would believe her, since she was an orphan. How could she know rich people? But the fact was, it was true. It just showed that people sometimes prefer to hear lies.
After much thought, Zhuyun simply said it was her job to be a nanny for the owner of the house. When asked how she got the job, she would just say her cooking skills were amazing.
Zhuyun’s excuse was a little unbelievable, but it was more acceptable to Lin Miaomiao than being friends with a rich person. So Lin Miaomiao believed her and sympathized with her even more, which was why she wanted Zhuyun to find a different job.
Zhuyun felt Lin Miaomiao’s concern and smiled warmly. “Miaomiao, I’ll think about it. Thank you for thinking of me.”
Lin Miaomiao shyly took a sip of her bubble tea, quickly glancing at Zhuyun before looking down again. She thought Zhuyun had become even prettier after getting healthier. Her smile was so sweet and endearing; it was easy to develop a good impression of her.
She said bashfully, “Don’t be so polite, Zhuyun.”
The two of them smiled at each other and began discussing what delicious food they would eat later. A single cup of bubble tea wasn’t enough to satisfy their cravings.
The glass door of the bubble tea shop opened, and a cold breeze swept in. Zhuyun seemed to see something and smiled, but was soon distracted by the cold wind, shivering and rubbing her cheeks.
Lin Miaomiao caught her little movements. Zhuyun gave her a bright smile and explained, “I get cold easily.”
The girl with the rosy skin and sweet smile made Lin Miaomiao secretly chuckle because she noticed someone was looking at Zhuyun. She gossiped, “Look over by the window. Someone seems to be looking at you.”
Zhuyun was chewing on her taro balls, her cheeks puffed out. She said casually, “Don’t make me turn my head. I got a stiff neck yesterday, and it’s killing me.”
“Oh? What are you going to do?”
“I’ll just… no, I’ll just rub it myself when I get home.” Zhuyun almost let it slip. It wasn’t that she couldn’t tell Lin Miaomiao about Tang Weixue, but she knew Lin Miaomiao too well. If she mentioned Tang Weixue, her friend would surely start gossiping. Oh well, young people love a good story.
Zhuyun focused on drinking her bubble tea, looking calm and collected. Lin Miaomiao, who had her back to the people behind her, didn’t notice the change in atmosphere, completely absorbed in talking about her favorite celebrity.
Suddenly, a cup of bubble tea was placed on their table, interrupting Lin Miaomiao’s endless chatter.
Zhuyun calmly rested her chin on her hand and smiled at the person. Her seat was well-positioned, so she could see clearly whenever someone entered. She had expected this scene.
“You have the nerve to come drink bubble tea near the school? Zhuyun, you really have no shame.”
Lin Miaomiao’s face changed. She stared at the fashionably dressed girl with a wary look. “Nie Xuan, don’t go too far. This isn’t school.”
Nie Xuan was Zhuyun’s roommate and the owner of the jade bracelet. She glanced disdainfully at Lin Miaomiao. Nie Xuan didn’t want to make too many enemies, and while she could ignore a single Lin Miaomiao, she didn’t want to let Zhuyun go.
“If you’re a poor country bumpkin, don’t come out and disgust people. She stole my jade bracelet and can’t even say sorry. Why shouldn’t I be hard on her?”
Zhuyun’s eyes flickered. The people around them, hearing Nie Xuan’s words, couldn’t help but look over. Zhuyun sat up, took out her phone, and placed it on the table. Her smile unchanged, she said, “Look at me, I almost forgot to call the police. After I left the dorm, I went through my things and, oh dear, found a very expensive handbag was missing. I’m pretty sure you took it. After all, Nie Xuan, you’re a gold-digger, aren’t you? You always complained about your cousin giving you secondhand bags in the dorm, but every time you saw her, you became a suck-up. Nie Xuan, you’re not a good person. You’re wicked and love to steal things. When are you going to return my bag? I spent tens of thousands of yuan on it.”
“Who the hell stole your bag? Don’t you dare accuse me! Where would you, a motherless, fatherless nobody, get money to buy a bag like that?”
Zhuyun sighed softly, her eyes holding a hint of pity. Unlike Nie Xuan’s exasperation, she wasn’t angry at all. She just said, “You’re truly pitiful.”
“You’re full of shit! How am I pitiful!” Nie Xuan didn’t understand why Zhuyun wasn’t afraid of the stealing incident at all. She was mocking her, so shouldn’t Zhuyun get angry and try to defend herself? If she did, Nie Xuan could latch onto the theft accusation and humiliate her in front of everyone. But the situation was developing strangely. When had she ever touched Zhuyun’s bag? How could a poor girl like her have a designer bag!
Zhuyun laughed softly. “How is it not pitiful? With both a mother and father, you still have to steal my things. What does that make you? A complete idiot? Or maybe you have a strange fetish for stealing things to satisfy yourself. Ah, if that’s the case, then I understand why you love to steal despite having two parents.”
She looked Nie Xuan up and down sympathetically, clicking her tongue. “So it turns out…”
Zhuyun secretly snickered. “It turns out you’re a pervert?”
“Damn it, I’m not a pervert! Are you crazy, what are you talking about? And I don’t have that kind of fetish, I’m a normal person! Don’t make things up!” Nie Xuan felt the stares of the people around them changing. Even her so-called friends quietly took a few steps back, wanting to distance themselves from her.
“Okay, okay, stop explaining. I understand. You’re sick, I get it.”
Zhuyun stood up, finished the last sip of her bubble tea, and said to the dumbfounded Lin Miaomiao with a smile, “I think I know what we should eat now. How about grilled fish? I’m getting a little hungry.”
Lin Miaomiao propped her chin up, looking at Zhuyun with admiration. When she had first seen the ill-intentioned Nie Xuan, Lin Miaomiao’s heart had jumped to her throat, afraid that Nie Xuan would publicly humiliate Zhuyun. As a friend, Lin Miaomiao didn’t want Zhuyun to suffer that indignity.
Who knew… now the one in trouble wasn’t Zhuyun, but the weirdly perverted Nie Xuan.
“You stop right there! I didn’t say you could go! You bitch.” Nie Xuan, who had been unfairly branded with a terrible label, completely broke down. She was not the pervert Zhuyun claimed she was, and she didn’t have a stealing fetish. Zhuyun was slandering her.
Zhuyun shook off her hand, the coldness in her eyes like a bone-chilling ice. This made Nie Xuan, who was about to unleash her anger, feel suffocated, as if she were in an icy river.
“If you want to cause trouble for me, go get your stealing illness cured first.”
Zhuyun walked a few steps, then remembered something. She gave a mischievous smile and said to Nie Xuan’s friends, “Be careful, don’t let her steal your things. She won’t admit it, and in the end, you’ll be the only ones who suffer.”
Nie Xuan stood there and yelled, but no matter how much she cursed at Zhuyun, everyone else just saw it as the powerless tantrum of someone whose true colors had been revealed.
“Zhuyun! You were so cool! How did you do that?”
Zhuyun put on her scarf, her smile innocent and sweet, not at all like the fierce person she had just been.
“You just don’t play along with what she says. Don’t explain anything. Once you start explaining, you fall into her trap. She’s just throwing mud, and I can do the same.”
Lin Miaomiao excitedly patted Zhuyun’s back and gave her a big thumbs up. “You’re awesome!”
“Hey, take it easy, sis!” The few pats made Zhuyun cough. Lin Miaomiao gave an awkward laugh. “Sorry, sorry, I got too excited. I’ve had enough of Nie Xuan showing off in class.”
Zhuyun looked at her silly smile and shrugged helplessly.
Nie Xuan, relying on the fact that one of her relatives was a teacher at the school, spent her days forming little cliques and acting dramatic. As for why she hated Zhuyun, Zhuyun didn’t think too much about it. It had nothing to do with her.
“Zhuyun, it’s snowing!”
In northern cities, you could always see snow in winter. Zhuyun looked up and felt the snowflakes melting on her cheeks. She smiled and quickly wiped them away.
“I can’t believe the weather forecast was actually right this time. I didn’t pay attention. I should have worn a hat.”
The restaurant they were going to was a bit far. Lin Miaomiao suggested they take a taxi, but Zhuyun loved the snow, and it made her think of the person she hadn’t seen all day.
“Get on. I’ll take you.”
Lin Miaomiao looked at the well-bundled Zhuyun, then at herself without a hat or scarf. She encouraged herself. “Today, I’m sacrificing myself for Zhuyun. No taxi, I’ll ride your little scooter.”
Zhuyun thought she was being a little dramatic and pouted. “It’s not that far. You won’t freeze. Or I could lend you my hat?”
“No, no, you’re frail. You should protect yourself.”
Zhuyun silently accepted the “sickly” label. What could she do? She really was weak and prone to illness. She put on her gloves, ready to set off, two lively and beautiful girls heading toward delicious food.
Their meeting point was near the university, and it was lively today because of the holiday. The air was full of a youthful energy.
Sometimes, driving was convenient, but when you got stuck in traffic, it felt like walking would be faster.
Tang Weixue, staring blankly in her car, looked at the road ahead. There were many strangers there, none of whom had anything to do with her. But one girl who was laughing with a big, wide smile made her eyes soften. Wearing a pink and white fuzzy hat and her new scarf, she smiled as brightly as the warm sun. It was the sound of a heart fluttering.
Tang Weixue adjusted her angle. She suddenly felt that waiting for a red light wasn’t so boring after all. Thanks to the red light, she was able to see Zhuyun.
She had just come from the school. The matter with the principal was nearing its end, like a grasshopper in the autumn—it wouldn’t be able to jump for much longer.
Tang Weixue’s lips curved into a smile, but it quickly faded.
She saw Lin Miaomiao sitting behind her. Both girls were young and innocent, and in that moment, Tang Weixue felt a pang of jealousy.
She was stunned, then sighed silently.
Was she going crazy?
After the light turned green, she inexplicably followed the scooter. When she saw them stop in front of a grilled fish restaurant, Tang Weixue unbuckled her seatbelt.
“Miaomiao, let’s go with this one. I read the reviews before; everyone says it’s delicious.”
“I’ll follow your lead!”
The two girls leaned in, whispering, and then burst into laughter. They seemed to get along very well.
“Zhuyun.”
A familiar voice made Zhuyun turn around. She jumped up and down excitedly like a clumsy penguin and ran toward Tang Weixue. She affectionately took Tang Weixue’s arm. “Sister, what are you doing here!”
“Are you not happy to see me?” Her tone was strange, causing Zhuyun to look at her in confusion.
Tang Weixue couldn’t help but feel annoyed. Was she really sick in the head?
Her black hair was pinned up, and her mature, beautiful face was like a blooming camellia, her temperament cool and distant, but her eyes were incredibly gentle.
Lin Miaomiao walked over and asked, “Who is this?”
Zhuyun giggled. “She’s my employer.”
“Huh?”
“Shhh.”
Zhuyun winked at her. “Forgot? I’m your little nanny.”
Tang Weixue’s eyebrows relaxed as she fought back a smile and nodded.
A little nanny? It was so typical of her to come up with that.
The smile in Tang Weixue’s eyes grew. She was so eccentric and adorable.
