I Have the Aura of a Supporting Character in Yuri Novels - Chapter 23
When Zhujun argued with Number 857, she was very confident and felt that nothing would happen. But when she saw Tang Weixue caring for her by putting food on her plate, Zhujun’s confidence wavered. She began to feel that what she did was too much. Even though she knew that Bo Xiangming was not a good person, he was, after all, something of Tang Weixue’s. Her glossing over the issue felt like she had done something to betray Tang Weixue.
Ugh, this is such a headache. It’s all Tang Weixue’s fault for being so good to her that Zhujun started to worry about her, fussing over every little thing and not knowing what to do.
Tang Weixue inexplicably received a glare from Zhujun. She wiped her lips and asked, “Why are you looking at me like that?”
Zhujun smiled, her eyes twinkling as she changed the subject. “Tang-Jie, I’m keeping all of your kindness in my heart, so I will definitely repay you!”
The overly sweet term of address made Tang Weixue’s ears feel warm. Other people had called her “Tang-Jie” before, but she had never felt this strange sensation. Could it be that adding one extra word made such a difference?
She cleared her throat and pretended to be calm. “Don’t talk about repaying me. I don’t expect a kid to repay me.”
Zhujun’s smile vanished, and she chewed on the boiled shrimp as if to suppress her anger. She said discontentedly, “I’ll be twenty in another year. That’s practically thirty, so why do you always treat me like a child?”
Tang Weixue languidly rested her chin on her clasped hands, watching Zhujun get angry with a smile. She loved teasing Zhujun. Although her face wasn’t very plump, Zhujun’s lively, almond-shaped eyes were very charming. Maybe Zhujun didn’t realize that when she got angry, her eyes would get wide and round, like sweet and sour black grapes. This little detail always made Tang Weixue want to laugh.
She thought to herself that she must be a very unreliable adult, always teasing a kid for no reason. But what could she do? She was just so adorable.
“Mhmm, mhmm, I hear you.”
Zhujun was so angry that she glared at her again and scolded, “You’re a mischievous older woman, you’re just humoring me!”
“Haha,” Tang Weixue touched her cheek with her finger. In a good mood, she blinked her eyes, which were sparkling and didn’t look like a mischievous person at all.
She said, “I’m only twenty-five, and I’ll be twenty-six after the new year. How am I a mischievous older woman? I don’t even have wrinkles yet.”
Zhujun took back the upper hand and said with a wicked smile, “The next time you call me little, I’ll call you old. We’ll be even. You wouldn’t get mad at me, right, Tang-Jie?”
She slyly pulled a hair from the tiger’s beard and then obediently wagged her tail before the tiger could get angry. Tang Weixue laughed softly. When she looked up at Zhujun again, the gentle smile in her eyes made Zhujun suddenly understand what it meant to be alluring.
Tang Weixue said, “Talking to you always makes me so happy.”
“What’s up, my sister?”
Knowing there was gossip to be heard, she quickly grabbed her bowl and sat next to Tang Weixue, her almond-shaped eyes staring at her expectantly. Her “I-love-a-good-show” attitude made Tang Weixue angrily tug on her ponytail and internally grumble, “This heartless kid.”
Tang Weixue didn’t argue with her and said, “It’s nothing serious. The daughter of my grandfather’s old friend is a complete romantic. Whenever something happens with her husband, Xia-Nainai’s daughter loses all sense. She doesn’t listen to her family’s advice and only thinks about her husband.”
Zhujun took a bite of rice without even blinking. “A romantic? That’s simple. Have you ever considered giving Xia-Nainai’s daughter a second chance at love? How old is her daughter? If she’s in her thirties or forties, it’s even easier. Men in their thirties or forties tend to have big bellies and big heads. Just find her a handsome new companion who knows how to sweet-talk her. I don’t believe a romantic wouldn’t fall for that.”
She was completely oblivious to her own shocking words. A deep look flashed in Tang Weixue’s eyes, and she mused, “That makes some sense.”
Zhujun added, “This method might work, but what if she meets another scumbag? Did Xia-Nainai’s daughter’s husband cheat or something?”
Tang Weixue found her tone very amusing. She leaned closer and asked meaningfully, “Little girl, you seem to have a lot of opinions on relationship issues?”
After saying that, Tang Weixue regretted it a little. It’s normal for people to have been in relationships. Her question was a bit strange, almost as if she hoped Zhujun hadn’t had any exes.
As for why she didn’t consider whether Zhujun had a current partner, that was a simple question. She had been living so miserably before, so if she had a boyfriend, he would have appeared by now. However, it was also possible that the person was a heartless jerk who abandoned her, which is why he hadn’t shown up.
Zhujun had no idea that Tang Weixue had already cooked up so many scenarios in her head in that short amount of time. Her big eyes blinked, and she said with a smile, “I’m just a smart person, what can I say? Even if I’ve never been in a relationship, I still have a mind for solving problems. The reason you didn’t think of this is because I’m just a little bit smarter than you!”
Tang Weixue looked at her triumphant expression and couldn’t resist the urge to pinch her cheek. Then she wrapped her arm around Zhujun’s neck and snorted, “No matter how smart you are, you can’t escape my grasp.”
“Stop it! I’m still eating.”
Her eyes were filled with disdain. Tang Weixue felt incredibly childish. She thought about her earlier reasoning. Zhujun hadn’t even said anything, and she had already come up with a bunch of stories. She had even thought about whether or not she should stand up for Zhujun and teach that heartless jerk a lesson.
Sigh, she was suddenly starting to understand why friends with younger sisters worried so much.
Tang Weixue’s gossipy side hadn’t been extinguished, and she asked again, “Don’t all kids like to have crushes early on? You never dated in middle school or high school?”
“My sister, that’s other people, not me.”
“What about college, then?”
Zhujun’s expression suddenly became hard to describe. She sighed and beckoned Tang Weixue with her finger.
Tang Weixue obediently leaned in, and Zhujun whispered, “To be honest, the reason I’ve had such a miserable life is probably because of a terrible man.”
“What?” Tang Weixue’s eyebrows shot up, and an unknown anger flared up inside her.
What kind of monster would do something so horrible?
Zhujun was getting into the drama. It was the perfect time to complain and bad-mouth the male lead and his mother.
“I was working at a restaurant, you know. One day, I met this guy who looked decent, but he acted like he was in a TV drama, you know, the ‘I see my ex in you’ kind of thing? It was so disgusting. If I hadn’t been carrying food, I would’ve thrown the plate at his head. Later, I was framed for stealing my roommate’s jade bracelet, was disciplined, and eventually expelled. A classmate who came to see me off secretly told me a woman came to talk to the principal. My classmate studied sketching, so I asked her to draw her. What a coincidence, that woman was the male lead’s mother. I had seen her at the restaurant that day.”
As Zhujun spoke, her eyes turned red with injustice, and she let out a long sigh, as if she had endless grievances to share.
Tang Weixue’s protective instinct immediately surfaced. She softened her voice and put her arm around Zhujun’s shoulder, saying with concern, “Why didn’t you tell me about something so big?”
Zhujun gave a reserved smile and said shyly, “I tried to fight back in school, but I was still expelled. No one believed me when I was framed. Maybe they thought I was so broke I would steal a jade bracelet to make a living. So I thought, forget it. If one door closes, another one opens. Besides, I didn’t want to trouble you with my problems.”
To be honest, Zhujun never thought Tang Weixue would intervene in the school matter. At the time, when Tang Weixue asked her why she wasn’t in school, she only said she was forced to drop out and didn’t explain the details.
Zhujun did this for two reasons: one, she didn’t think she was important enough for Tang Weixue to stand up for her; and two, Zhujun believed she could handle the school matter herself. If Tang Weixue hadn’t brought up the school issue at the dinner table today, Zhujun wouldn’t have revealed the details of her expulsion at this point.
Tang Weixue felt a pang in her heart. The squeaky wheel gets the grease, but isn’t the well-behaved child more endearing? She knew Zhujun was hiding it because she was afraid Tang Weixue wouldn’t believe her, or maybe she thought that even if she spoke up, she wouldn’t get a response.
She tilted her head, resting it on Zhujun’s ponytail, and said softly, “It’s my fault for not asking you about school sooner. You’re a good kid, and I want you to believe that in this world, justice can defeat evil.”
Zhujun lowered her head, her eyes misty with tears that fell onto her clothes.
It was a childish but comforting sentence, yet it made Zhujun so emotional that she couldn’t control herself.
Zhujun hadn’t personally experienced the hardships before, but when she came to this world, she had a feeling that the “Zhujun” from before was herself.
So when she heard Tang Weixue’s comfort, her shattered heart was gently picked up and cleaned by a pair of soft hands.
“Alright, alright, why are you shedding golden pearls?”
Tang Weixue clumsily wiped her tears. Zhujun hid her emotions and said, “You’re hurting me!”
Tang Weixue simply turned her face to face her. Their eyes met, and she could clearly see the glistening tears on her eyelashes. Tang Weixue helplessly wiped the moisture from the corners of her eyes and said, “So delicate.”
Zhujun puffed out her cheeks and didn’t say anything else.
Tang Weixue suddenly broke into a bright smile and said softly, “That damned old man hurt you. I don’t believe the jade bracelet incident had nothing to do with him. So, I’ll make that old man get a divorce and ruin his reputation. How does that sound?”
Zhujun stopped crying and stared at Tang Weixue in a daze. Soon, a smile spread across her face. She loved Tang Weixue like this. She was protecting her!
“That sounds great, great!”
But then she bit her lip, worried. She said, “Will it cause you a lot of trouble?”
“Trouble, trouble. Why do you keep bringing up that word? If a problem can be solved, it’s not trouble to me. Zhujun, I want to help you.” Tang Weixue couldn’t stand to see the usually sweet-smiling Zhujun crying, with tears falling one after another. She couldn’t describe the feeling in her heart, but she knew she felt a strong desire to protect Zhujun, which was why the normally non-interfering Tang Weixue was standing up for her.
She was resolute and wouldn’t allow Zhujun to argue. Zhujun’s tears turned into a smile, and she whispered, “You’re so cool, sister!”
She wasn’t ungrateful. Since someone had offered her their kindness, she had to be sincere in return.
Zhujun repeated, “You are super cool, sister!”
“Alright, alright, stop trying to sweet-talk me.” Tang Weixue squinted at Zhujun, trying to remain serious, but she couldn’t help the smile on her face. Finally, she said, “You were curious about who Xia-Nainai’s daughter’s husband was, right? It’s that old man.”
Zhujun was dumbfounded. She was so surprised she couldn’t speak. After a long while, she stammered, “That…that’s such a coincidence!”
Tang Weixue looked at her, who was almost leaning into her arms, and nodded with a smile.
“Sister, I have something good for you!!”
Who cares about dinner? Destroying a scumbag is so much more interesting.
She took out her phone and sent Tang Weixue a video. At the same time, she opened it to play for Tang Weixue. Zhujun said proudly, “I did something big today, too!”
Tang Weixue watched for a while and asked suspiciously, “Your phone that only costs a few thousand dollars can take such a high-definition video? It even captured the small mole on that woman’s nose.”
Is this phone brand’s camera so powerful? It seems to have a lot of potential for growth. Maybe she can find an opportunity to look into that company.
Zhujun bumped her head on Tang Weixue’s shoulder and said frantically, “That’s not the point!”
A teasing look flashed in Tang Weixue’s eyes. She stopped teasing her and stroked her long hair, saying, “You helped me with something big. What kind of reward do you want?”
“There’s a reward?”
“Xia-Nainai has been hoping her daughter would divorce that scumbag for a long time. Isn’t this evidence worthy of a reward?”
Zhujun suddenly thought of something. She sat up straight and, rubbing her fingers together, said with a giggle, “A reward isn’t necessary. Since I’ve done such a great service, could you please forgive me in the future, sister?”
Tang Weixue raised her eyebrows. She had never thought that the kind girl in front of her would do anything bad, but her expression now told Tang Weixue that she was in big trouble.
Tang Weixue looked calm and said, “I can.”
She clasped her hands together and said pleadingly, “I’m not going to tell you what it is now. Anyway, it’s not too late to beg for mercy when you find out.”
Tang Weixue saw her worried expression and became even more curious about what it was, but no matter how she asked, Zhujun wouldn’t say.
Many days later, when Tang Weixue put on that same jacket and was about to put her hands in her pockets, she noticed something felt wrong. She took it out and saw what looked like a ticket.
Tang Weixue found it more and more amusing and laughed out loud.
Her laughter caught the attention of her assistant, who asked, “Ms. Tang?”
She said flatly, “It’s nothing.”
The assistant didn’t dare to object. In the past, people in the company used to call her “Little Ms. Tang,” but in just a few years, no one dared to use that title anymore, especially since she had managed to get her own father removed from his position.
“By the way, Ms. Tang, a Mr. Bai came to see you while you were in the meeting. When I told him you were in a meeting, he said he hoped you would call him back when you were done.”
Tang Weixue frowned. She had already blacklisted Bo Xiangming’s number. Wasn’t that clear enough? They were from the same social circle, so there was no need to pester her.
“I got it.”
Tang Weixue, who had just finished a meeting, was still a little angry. There were always some rotten apples in the company, and their behavior in the meeting had really angered Tang Weixue. Of course, Tang Weixue wasn’t a generous person, so their mood was even worse than hers. If the next meeting didn’t produce a satisfactory result, they could pack up and get out. The company didn’t keep useless people.
She went into her office, let down her tied-up hair, and sat in her office chair. She unblocked Bo Xiangming’s number. She smiled coldly. “He wants me to call him? He can wait.”
If Bo Xiangming was smart enough, he would call her. In that case, she might consider answering.
She thought about how people outside the company described this man but wasn’t interested. She yawned. They could have minded their own business, but Bo Xiangming was unlucky enough to have been introduced to her by her father. In her mind, anyone associated with her father wasn’t a good person.
That’s right, she also didn’t think she was a good person.
Tang Weixue got a little lost in thought, remembering what Zhujun had said earlier.
She actually said that she was a good person, the kindest person.
Tang Weixue held her forehead and laughed softly, “What an idiot.”
There was no other sound in the office. Tang Weixue liked the quiet, and her assistant usually wouldn’t disturb her.
She didn’t stay idle for long and started handling her work. As she flipped through documents, time passed by.
The sunset outside the window filled the sky. The orange-red sunset was so dazzling, even as it was about to leave the earth. It was time to rest, and soon the bright moon would appear to admire the beauty of the earth.
Her phone suddenly rang. Tang Weixue frowned. She took a breath and looked at her phone.
The other party seemed to have noticed Tang Weixue’s hesitation and persistently let the phone ring without hanging up.
She answered impatiently and said, “Hello.”
Bo Xiangming looked at his watch. “Ms. Tang, would you do me the honor of having dinner with me?”
Tang Weixue naturally had no intention of agreeing. She was a woman who was supposed to go home and eat with Zhujun.
But Bo Xiangming was a very observant person. He could tell from her blacklisted number that Tang Weixue wasn’t interested in this arranged meeting. So he went straight to the point. “I don’t want to get married right now, but your father and I are on good terms, and I have to fulfill a promise to him. After we have dinner, I will politely decline your father’s offer, saying that we are not compatible. Ms. Tang, please agree, for the sake of me pitifully calling you so many times.”
Tang Weixue curled her lips. Any man who was on good terms with her father was definitely not a good person.
“No need. You don’t have to have dinner with me. You can just reject him.”
Bo Xiangming sighed and laughed. “Ms. Tang, you’re really breaking my heart. I’m right below your company. Let’s just meet. Not for private matters, but for business. That’s okay, right?”
Tang Weixue tapped her fingers on the table and asked back, “Business?”
“The CEO of the company you’re bidding against has a sister-in-law who is the mistress of a very important person.”
Tang Weixue clenched her fingers at once and didn’t hesitate anymore. She said, “What time is dinner?”
“Eight o’clock, at White Egret Restaurant.”
“Okay.”
A smile appeared on Bo Xiangming’s lips. He looked up at the building. “Ms. Tang, how late will you be working?”
“You don’t need to trouble yourself. I can drive to the restaurant myself.”
“Oh, Ms. Tang, you’re so heartless. Just like the rumors say, you don’t give men any chance to get close. It’s truly an honor for me to have the chance to dine with you.”
Tang Weixue scoffed and hung up after saying a few perfunctory words.
“Greasy!”
Yes, her evaluation of Bo Xiangming was greasy.
She didn’t continue working but instead called Zhujun.
Zhujun took a while to answer. It seemed like her phone wasn’t nearby. She said breathlessly, “What’s wrong, sister? You must have something on your mind to call me out of the blue.”
Tang Weixue scratched her eyebrow and said with some embarrassment, “I have something to do tonight, so I won’t be coming home for dinner. I’m sorry.”
Zhujun’s disappointment was audible in her voice. She grumbled, “Then I won’t stay home tonight either.”
“Where are you going?”
Zhujun also wanted to show that she was busy, so she proudly boasted, “I’m going shopping with my classmate, you know, the one who does sketching? I didn’t think she would still contact me, so I’m going to agree to go out with her tonight. It’s your fault for not being home.”
Tang Weixue said in a gentle tone, “Go out and have fun with your classmate, and use the card I gave you. Spend whatever you want. How about this, I have an appointment at eight. What time are you meeting your classmate? I’ll come pick you up.”
Zhujun had just finished cleaning the room and was exhausted. She didn’t hesitate and agreed right away.
Tang Weixue breathed a sigh of relief. After they finalized the arrangements, they ended the call.
She wiped some nonexistent sweat from her forehead and muttered, “What the hell? Why do I feel so guilty?”
The stars were beautiful that night, and the wind was cool.
Zhujun was sitting in the car, eating a lollipop. Now there were many snacks in Tang Weixue’s car. Having someone else in her life had naturally led to some changes.
She unwrapped a lollipop and offered it to Tang Weixue. There was still some sugar syrup on her lips, as if she had applied lip gloss. Her sweet and innocent look made Tang Weixue’s eyes deepen.
Tang Weixue gracefully took the lollipop without saying a word.
“Who are you having dinner with?”
“A friend.”
“Boy or girl?”
“A man.”
Zhujun was like a census taker, and Tang Weixue answered all her questions. She glanced at Tang Weixue and said, “For the sake of this lollipop, don’t forget to pick me up.”
“Are you looking for a spanking?”
Zhujun smiled playfully as she got out of the car. Tang Weixue stopped her, helped her put on her scarf, and stroked her ponytail, saying, “Call me if anything happens.”
“Mhmm, mhmm!”
A sudden gust of wind blew, rustling the woman’s long hair. Zhujun reached out to smooth it down.
They looked at each other and said goodbye.
Tang Weixue watched her walk away, then got into her car. As she was buckling her seatbelt, there was a knock on the window. She smiled and rolled it down, asking, “Why are you back?”
Zhujun bent down, bringing with her a sweet, fruity scent. Tang Weixue couldn’t help but bite the lollipop, as if by doing so, she could taste what was on Zhujun’s lips, since they were eating the same flavor.
She asked, “Are you going to have dinner with a man?”
“Mhmm.”
“Who is it?” Zhunfu
Tang Weixue licked the lollipop, her red lips holding it. “Bo Xiangming.”
“…”
Zhujun’s face was expressionless. She slowly straightened up, kicked Tang Weixue’s car tire in front of her, and then quickly gave her the finger before turning around and walking away.
That damned woman!
She won’t have dinner with me but will with Bo Xiangming!
You’ve got guts!
