- Chapter 4 - A Moth flying into the Flame
A night that was worse than death itself had finally been endured and passed.
She felt infinitely fortunate that Yan Ling had been called out by work early in the morning; it gave her some breathing room.
Her jaws were so sore and stiff that she could barely close them. The complete mess all over her body remained untreated, drying and hardening on her skin, emitting a sickening, nauseating odor.
Unable to tolerate it for even a single second, she forced herself up with sheer endurance. With her hands and feet numb, she rolled down from the bed and crawled into the bathroom to wash herself.
The very moment her face submerged beneath the water, something came pouring out, competing to overflow.
Yan Ling went abroad on a business trip for at least a month. The absolute first moment she landed, she sent a message to warn her that she was strictly forbidden from accepting any activities or business without her permission.
But that was an opportunity given to her by Gu Ming. She could refuse anyone, but it was impossible for her to refuse Gu Ming.
Even though the pain on her body and the humiliating marks were still cautioning her about the consequences of disobeying Yan Ling, for the sake of Gu Ming, because she wanted to see Gu Ming, she would not hesitate even if it meant being a moth flying into the flame.
That was an adventure and survival type of variety show. She did not know how they had connected with Gu Ming, or what kind of conditions they had used to persuade her.
The sisterly CP between her and Gu Ming was currently burning hot. During the broadcast period of the drama, they indeed needed follow-up cooperation to maintain the heat. It was irreproachable for Gu Ming to look for her, but this kind of variety show was truly a bit of a jaw-dropper, unexpected… and remarkably unconventional.
She had never seen any characters going to an adventure variety show for promotion.
Sure enough, after the official Weibo account of the program team released the invitation list for the new season, the comment section began to explode. She browsed through several social media platforms, and all of them were in shock over their unique and unconventional cooperative project.
Yan Ling also received the news at the earliest possible moment. Disregarding the time difference, she called directly and scolded her furiously from the very beginning. She listened blankly, without saying a single word, and only hung up the phone silently after Yan Ling finished venting.
She touched the corner of her mouth. The wound that had been torn open had already healed, but it seemed she had indeed learned to be a bit more well-behaved. Look, this time she did not talk back even once.
The crew of the Wilderness Survival program arrived very quickly. They picked her up and headed toward the destination while filming along the way.
Before this, she had generally informed herself about this program.
This show had already broadcasted for three seasons. Every season, ten guests would be invited, and they were required to survive on their own on a deserted island for twenty-one days.
Each person could bring ten tools, and they could not bring any communication equipment.
They could choose to withdraw midway.
Those who persisted until the very end could obtain a ten-million-yuan charity fund. The more people who stayed, the more prize money there would be, and the program team would donate it in their personal names to people who needed help.
This was undoubtedly a path to increase one’s reputation and prestige. The program team was also considered to have a good reputation, and the donated projects were subject to public supervision. The reason other people dared to come to this show was also because they valued this point.
Going to the deserted island required taking an airplane. She and Gu Ming met on the plane. In order to grab the public’s attention, the program team pulled off a massive move right at the start skydiving.
However, this was also a customary program routine. The several other people who came to the show were all psychologically prepared. Only she, even though she knew about it in advance, still lost all color in her face.
“Don’t be afraid, you have me.” Gu Ming held her ice-cold hand. Her warm body temperature transferred over, doing its utmost to soothe her tense and anxious emotions.
She took a glance at Gu Ming.
Gu Ming was just like this, forever so powerful and dazzling, as if there was nothing in the world that could baffle or defeat her.
The powerful airflow blew her hair into a wild mess. The others all had various expressions and behaviors of discomfort, but she was the only one smiling with open arms to welcome it.
Behind her was the sea of clouds high in the sky and a pale golden aura. The face that looked extremely similar to hers was backlit as she stretched out her hand toward her: “Come, I will take you.”
Even though her palm was completely filled with foul, cold sweat, and she was merely a timid, cowardly firefly hiding in the dark, she still stretched her hand out with all her might, as if filled with longing.
Gu Ming caught her and pulled her into an embrace. In the split second before she could even react, their bodies flipped, and the two of them tumbled down from the high altitude of thousands of meters.
The instant of weightlessness made her feel as though she had died once, but Gu Ming’s encouraging voice woke her up from the darkness back to reality.
“Don’t be afraid, open your eyes and take a look, it’s very beautiful.”
Skydiving was indeed not as terrifying as imagined. Looking down from the high altitude, the mountains, rivers, and streams could all be seen thoroughly; it was tiny yet majestic, and it felt as if her heart and mind were completely opened up.
But what gave her an even deeper feeling was still Gu Ming behind her. They were pressed together so tightly and closely. She could clearly perceive Gu Ming’s stable heartbeat, and she could feel the breath blown onto the side of her neck and her auricle when Gu Ming spoke, every single part of which could make her heartbeat stall.
The others also jumped down one after another, and they encountered each other in mid-air. However, in the end, she and Gu Ming were still the first to land. Because she was unacquainted and clumsy with the business, she almost fell flat on her face in a humiliating way.
It was a bit wretched, and a bit embarrassing, since there were cameras following and recording at every moment, but being able to see Gu Ming laughing so heartily and brightly, it seemed it was not that awkward or embarrassing after all.
The program team returned the tools they had brought to them.
Everyone had watched the previous seasons, so the tools everyone brought were considered fairly practical. Although they had not communicated beforehand and brought many duplicates, they could all be put to significant use.
The chief director did not say any nonsense. After announcing a few precautionary items, he left with the people of the program team, leaving behind only quite a few drones to follow and film.
“What do we do now?” Yu Sa, who came from a singer background, looked left and right, and was the first to speak out.
The ten of them consisted of four men and six women. Among them, the one with the highest status and popularity was Gu Ming, followed by Zeng Jiu, a recently booming popular young idol, then Yin Shi and Xu Wen who came from talent shows, and Yu Sa and Kang Yu who came from singer backgrounds.
She and He Xin were considered to be in the same echelon, both having started as supporting actors. Except, unlike her, who was a vicious female supporting character, most of the roles He Xin played were much more likable.
Song Ai was a local station host, belonging to the same television station as the program team. It was considered a “welfare benefit” for their own employee, an adventure at public expense.
The last one, speaking of which, was also dramatic. Originally, it should have been Yan Ling. She could not possibly allow her to go in and out, eat and sleep together with Gu Ming for as long as twenty-one days, and she had intended to occupy a slot in the name of an investor. Unfortunately, she could not spare the time, and she could not endure this kind of hardship either. Under Qiu Yuan’s clear explanation of the pros and cons, she could only dismiss this thought.
However, she did not intend to make things easy for her either, and she actually went so far as to persuade Cheng Ming, the male lead of their drama, to join.
The sisterly CP between her and Gu Ming was certainly boiling hot, but the “Shuang Ming” CP between Gu Ming and Cheng Ming was the orthodox one. Their feelings of mutual appreciation and regret for not meeting sooner were equally good to ship. Although the number of CP fans was slightly inferior, their combat effectiveness was equally ferocious.
When she was browsing through the edited videos of her and Gu Ming’s CP, she had, not unexpectedly, also browsed through those of Gu Ming and Cheng Ming. Even though she had no qualification or standing, she still fiercely swallowed several cans of bitter vinegar.
It burned her heart every time she looked at it.
Fortunately, they had a distinction of gender, and Gu Ming also obviously did not have that kind of meaning toward Cheng Ming. Even though they had visited office buildings together, done live streams together, and had far, far more occasions of appearing in the frame and cooperating together than the two of them did, in this program, Gu Ming was still more inclined toward her.
“Let’s prepare lunch right where we are first, and then find a suitable place to settle down. I remember the tents all of us add up to are six in total, let’s see how to allocate them in a while.” Gu Ming spontaneously took over the identity of the leader and made rapid arrangements.
The others had no objections and began to pack up their respective things.
