- Chapter 88 - The Metaphysical Master’s Fiancée Part V
“Yiqing, do you just not want to talk?”
Lan Changge put all of Luo Shuyu’s belongings into the guest room and then asked, “Shuyu, take a look and see if anything is missing. If not, I’ll be heading back.”
Luo Shuyu had established her own metaphysical studio, named Xuan Yue. The office was located in her own residence. Aside from a receptionist and Lan Changge, who acted as her manager, she was the only staff member. Therefore, working from Jiang Yiqing’s home wouldn’t cause much of a disturbance.
“There shouldn’t be anything else. Thank you for your hard work,” Luo Shuyu said with a smile. “Let me make you a coffee before you go.”
“To drink coffee handmade by Shuyu is truly an honor.”
Luo Shuyu had unexpectedly discovered that the coffee machine in Jiang Yiqing’s house was the same model as the one in her own home. Thinking about it, her mother and Auntie Jiang must have bought them together. Furthermore, the Jiang household was fully stocked with all kinds of coffee beans, sparking her desire to brew some.
When Luo Shuyu reached the kitchen, Auntie Qin happened to be there as well. Luo Shuyu asked, “Auntie Qin, there are so many types of coffee here. Does Yiqing love coffee that much?”
“No, she doesn’t really drink it,” Auntie Qin said with a smile. “This coffee was prepared for me. That child knows I love coffee, so wherever she goes to play, she brings back local beans for me. She’s very thoughtful.”
Luo Shuyu had originally taken enough beans for four people, but she paused upon hearing this, hesitating whether to put some back. Auntie Qin said, “But it might also be that my skills are just average, so Yiqing doesn’t care for it. If only we drink it, Yiqing might feel lonely watching us. Make a cup for her too, Miss Luo.”
Lonely? Auntie Qin’s way of speaking was certainly interesting. Luo Shuyu asked, “Would Yiqing feel lonely over such a small thing?”
“Yes, I watched that child grow up; that’s just the kind of person she is. Even if she doesn’t like it, as long as someone gives her something full of heart, she will be the first to say it tastes good.”
“…I see.” Luo Shuyu thought about it and began making the coffee. Inspired by Auntie Qin, she tried to infuse her own feelings into the brew.
The Italian-style coffee was rich and bold, and within it lay a slight, subtle probe from Luo Shuyu: How exactly do you view our engagement?
Compared to Jiang Yiqing’s way of avoiding the subject, Luo Shuyu actually preferred to talk things out openly. She could accept any outcome, but she could not stand this kind of dismissive disregard.
“Miss Luo is so talented, she can even do latte art!”
Jiang Yiqing was born in the Year of the Rabbit, so Luo Shuyu made her a latte with a rabbit design. Luo Shuyu herself was born in the Year of the Dragon and was one year older than Jiang Yiqing.
“It’s just a small trick.”
Luo Shuyu placed the coffee cups on coasters and then onto a tray. Auntie Qin took her cup, and Luo Shuyu carried the other to Lan Changge in the living room.
Lan Changge took a sip and praised, “It’s still that same taste.”
“Shuyu, with your skills, you could open a shop.” She always said this, and this time was no exception.
“That’s just your bias speaking,” Luo Shuyu replied with a smile before heading upstairs with a cup of coffee.
When the knock at the door sounded, Jiang Yiqing immediately became nervous, wondering who it was while secretly hoping to see Luo Shuyu’s face.
In the hospital, she had subconsciously relied on her like an Imperial Sister, but now, she felt a simple curiosity toward her as a person.
Seeing the latte with her zodiac animal on it, Jiang Yiqing naturally thought of the little rabbit Luo Shuyu had given her. Now, that little rabbit stood among a pile of plush dolls on her bedside table. The warm steam, the aroma of coffee—everything felt so cozy.
“Yiqing, please have some.”
“Thank you.” Jiang Yiqing knew this was called “coffee,” but she had never tasted it before. She took the cup and had a small sip. The unique texture immediately filled her mouth—a liquid that felt like milk yet carried a bitterness as it flowed into her stomach. Instantly, she felt her spirits lift.
“It’s delicious.”
“Yiqing, don’t you usually dislike coffee? Are you being honest, or just saying nice things?” Luo Shuyu asked teasingly.
“It really is delicious,” Jiang Yiqing explained with a blush. “I truly think so.”
“You don’t have to force yourself.”
“I’m not forcing myself.” To prove she really liked it, Jiang Yiqing took a large gulp and promptly began to cough.
Coffee splashed onto her chest. Luo Shuyu quickly grabbed the cup, but she was a step too late. Jiang Yiqing looked on in shock while Luo Shuyu opened the wardrobe to find her a change of clothes.
“Call me when you’ve changed.”
Luo Shuyu took the initiative to step out and wait by the door. Jiang Yiqing was dazed, not knowing how to react. Even though Luo Shuyu was outside, her face was terribly red. She slowly changed her clothes and whispered, “I’m done.”
Luo Shuyu took the soiled clothes to the laundry room on the second floor to wash them, then returned and sat opposite Jiang Yiqing. “Yiqing, I’ve been thinking. There is something I want to talk to you about.”
Jiang Yiqing looked at her blankly, feeling a sort of fear of the unknown. Luo Shuyu wondered to herself, Am I really that scary?
“Yiqing, do you just not want to talk?” Luo Shuyu’s tone became a bit stern.
“No… it’s not that…” Jiang Yiqing denied it, but her words only made things more confusing.
Luo Shuyu didn’t know why, but she began to speak without filtering her thoughts. The questions she had been harboring began to surface.
“Yiqing, if I remember correctly, you are a nationally registered skier. Why would someone like you suddenly slip and fall? Your friends never imagined you would have an accident. Although Auntie Jiang thinks it has something to do with your fate, I don’t agree. I believe it was a simple accident caused by personal error in judgment.”
“…” Jiang Yiqing was left speechless. It was true—the moment she went skiing again, she would immediately be exposed as a beginner. In reality, she was still ignorant of most things in this world. How could she not slip up? How could she explain that she had swapped identities with the original Jiang Yiqing?
“Nothing to say?” Luo Shuyu asked, her bright eyes searching her.
Because of her work, Luo Shuyu often had to use a sharp tone when speaking with clients or even spirits; consequently, she often seemed to lack a human touch. She was well aware that her words could make people uncomfortable.
“…You are right.” Jiang Yiqing lowered her head guiltily. Perhaps thinking she could replace the original Jiang Yiqing and live a good life here was merely her own delusion.
“You might think your performance is seamless, but in my eyes, it is full of flaws. Furthermore, I did a quick calculation and discovered that something incredible has happened to you. Others have no way of knowing, but you know very well who I am, don’t you?”
Jiang Yiqing was hurt by her aggressive words. Performance? Flaws? Why talk to her like that?
However, since things had reached this point, she wasn’t going to act like a helpless little rabbit anymore. This Jiang Yiqing was the type of person who, even if ten thousand people said she was wrong, would absolutely be her own shield. She looked at Luo Shuyu, her eyes red, and said, “Sister Luo, what do you want from me by saying all this?”
“What do I want? Is there anything you have that I would covet?” Luo Shuyu let out a soft laugh.
“From your aggressive words, I feel there is some purpose. I am dull-witted; you might as well speak plainly.”
Luo Shuyu only needed to perform a calculation to know all of Jiang Yiqing’s secrets, but she hadn’t actually done so. Her powerful sixth sense had allowed her to guess something. Moreover, the fact that Jiang Yiqing could see ghosts was something she had never heard of before. However, it seemed Luo Shuyu had messed things up. She couldn’t even explain to herself why she had lost her usual composure and spoken so uncontrollably.
Perhaps Jiang Yiqing would hate her for this, and the engagement would end just like that. Perhaps that was for the best. No one would be happy being with someone as sensitive and awkward as her.
“It’s nothing, Yiqing. You’re overthinking it.” Luo Shuyu regained her gentle smile, as if the overbearing person from a moment ago hadn’t been her at all.
Jiang Yiqing was confused again; she didn’t know what Luo Shuyu wanted.
“Your leg injury isn’t healed yet, so you need to rest well. Don’t worry too much. The things I just said… don’t take them to heart.”
“…” Jiang Yiqing had seen in the news that the world described Luo Shuyu as an “asocial genius.” She now understood why. This kind of personality was indeed… not very likable, just like her own past self.
Looking at the freesia on the table, Jiang Yiqing somehow still chose to believe in Luo Shuyu. She said, “Sister Luo, where do these flowers come from? Could you please order more flowers from that place?”
Luo Shuyu’s heart suddenly skipped a beat. Without thinking, she agreed, “Alright.”
Large batches of fresh flowers arrived at Jiang Yiqing’s home. Jiang Yiqing was finally able to obtain some fragments as she wished. After entering the System Mall, she discovered it had everything. Even if she couldn’t manage to be “this” Jiang Yiqing, she would have no trouble surviving.
However, she still really wanted to continue being this Jiang Yiqing, because she could feel Auntie Jiang’s protection and love for her daughter. If Auntie Jiang learned her daughter had gone somewhere she could never return from, she would be heartbroken. And Jiang Yiqing’s friends would surely feel regret.
Even though she wasn’t the real Jiang Yiqing, she was willing to find ways to integrate into her life. This thought, however, had also been seen through by Luo Shuyu. But after that, Luo Shuyu did not expose her in front of everyone.
Luo Shuyu sat on the sofa, watching Jiang Yiqing tend to the flowers and plants. Meanwhile, Lan Changge sent her a reply.
“Shuyu, you have a truly great memory. This Auntie Wang was indeed a client of ours once. That was over ten years ago, and you can actually remember it.”
Luo Shuyu never advertised her studio online. Her methods were very primitive—publishing a single line in the corners of various newspapers and magazines: “Feng Shui, Fortune Telling, Metaphysics, Exorcism. Please contact Master Luo at 1xx xxxx xxxx.” Therefore, aside from clients introduced by word of mouth, getting a commission was entirely dependent on luck and fate.
Ten years ago, Luo Shuyu hadn’t even started advertising. Auntie Wang had been introduced to her by another client back then. Those who could access her circle were either rich or noble; yet the current Auntie Wang was a female laborer employed by the wealthy.
