- Chapter 82 - The Beauty Abducted by the Empress Part XXIII
Guarding Her Generation After Generation
Jiang Xian sat beneath the laurel tree on the Star-Gazing Platform. Before her lay a chessboard, frozen in the final state of the game she had been playing with Wanqi Sangyan at the moment of her departure. Jiang Xian knew she ought to forget the past; she would rather believe Wanqi Sangyan was a heartless person, yet Wanqi Yanjing’s final words had shaken her resolve.
Wanqi Sangyan had stayed by her side for a thousand years, not hesitating to turn her back on everyone else. Was this not proof enough of her true devotion? Perhaps a thousand years was simply too long a time; she found herself unable to forget her.
Suddenly, the corner of her robe fluttered in the wind. It felt as if someone were approaching, causing Jiang Xian to turn her head abruptly. To her shock, she saw her standing right behind her.
Was she dreaming?
“Xian’er.”
Even knowing it was a dream, Jiang Xian could not help but seek out the source upon hearing that voice.
“Since you have already departed, why have you come to see me again?”
Wanqi Sangyan found herself unable to defend her actions. Although her physical form had perished and her shadow had vanished, the “Love Threads” of her clan were indestructible. Even now, her feelings remained as fervent as they were at the moment of her departure.
“Xian’er, I have caused you to suffer,” Wanqi Sangyan said. “You should drink the Water of Forgetfulness and henceforth cast aside the past.”
“A thousand years,” Jiang Xian smiled. “It is too long.”
If she lost those memories, she would no longer be herself. It might seem foolish, but no matter what she did, everything felt transient—as if, if she only waited a little longer, Wanqi Sangyan would return.
“Xian’er, I have come to see you.”
Wanqi Sangyan moved to Jiang Xian’s side and reached out to touch her hand, but she could not make contact; she currently possessed no physical form.
Jiang Xian froze. She had never had a dream so detailed. She looked at her and asked, “Is it truly you?”
Wanqi Sangyan nodded.
Jiang Xian stepped forward and quietly embraced her, saying, “Yan’er, was it because you blamed me for not believing in you enough that you took so long to come see me?”
“Silly girl. No matter what you do or what you think, you are my Xian’er. How could I ever not love you?”
Langhuan Immortal Manor
“Jiang Mengran, I shall lend your descendant this helping hand.” Seeing the thick demonic miasma in the mortal realm, Immortal Sovereign Lingyue descended to the world below.
The troublesome aspect of the Demon Race was that upon contact, they would generate an inner demon within one’s heart. If one could not defeat the inner demon, they would instead fall and join the Demon Race. Therefore, those with a smooth path to immortality would not go looking for trouble; engaging with the Demon Race rashly brought a hundred harms and not a single benefit.
According to Lingyue’s knowledge, this demon had been attacked by a Gu Immortal in a different realm and had fled to this world. It coincided with the Great Tribulation Day of the Crown Princess of the Kingdom of Qin, and the demon had successfully abducted the Crown Princess. Although Wanqi Yanjing was not one to be trifled with—even at the age of six, she had sealed the demon within the Heterogeneous Bone Langhua Jade.
Unexpectedly, this demon had spent its time recuperating within the jade. Seizing this current opportunity, it had actually broken the seal to reappear in the world of men.
Now, at this critical stage of the Parasol (Wutong) Divine Tree’s growth, she could no longer sit idly by.
“You are the Eldest Imperial Daughter?” The newly manifested demon grabbed Jiang Yuning by the neck and asked with a sinister malice.
“What… manner of beast are you?” Jiang Yuning asked. She tried to break free from the demon’s grasp, only to find that their strengths were not on the same level.
“I have much to thank you for, bringing me to such a place. Free from Wanqi Yanjing’s control, I was finally able to recover,” the demon tightened its grip. “But it seems there is no need to thank you, after all, you are about to die anyway.”
“Let her go this instant!” Qiyun rushed over upon hearing the commotion.
A cloud of demonic energy drifted toward Qiyun. Fearing that she too would fall victim, Jiang Yuning threw herself forward, shielding Qiyun with her own body.
“Yuning!” In her desperation, Qiyun forgot all formal titles. She caught Jiang Yuning’s body, seeing a trace of blood at the corner of her lips, her body enveloped in a faint layer of demonic mist.
This was bad! If this continued, the demonic energy would cause her to lose her mind. Qiyun hastily began to circulate the Heart-Cleansing Incantation to prevent the demonic energy from spreading further through Jiang Yuning’s body.
Seeing this, the demon chuckled.
“Back then I was heavily injured; otherwise, that Wanqi Yanjing could never have harmed me. With just the two of you, what do you think you can accomplish?”
“You insolent wretch! How dare you act so arrogant in front of my disciple!” A cold, haughty voice of reprimand rang out.
Qiyun looked up to see her Master, Lingyue, descending upon the mortal world. Standing within a dharma formation, Lingyue flicked her fingers rapidly, and countless bolts of lightning tore through the night sky, crashing into the ground.
Like ten thousand sparks falling at once, the demon was burned beyond recognition. It scurried away in a panic, transforming into a wisp of smoke, attempting to dive into the body of the person nearest to it: Qiyun.
Jiang Yuning once again blocked the way in front of Qiyun. Qiyun looked at her in shock, murmuring, “Yuning, why?”
Just as Jiang Yuning was about to be struck by the demon’s scheme, Phoenix Fire suddenly erupted from the ground. The surging heat lifted everyone several yards into the air. Wanqi Yanjing’s Qitang Silk flew out in tandem, wrapping around the two of them and pulling them to her side.
“Old thief, weren’t you looking to pick a fight with me? Why the sudden change of heart? Could it be you realized you are no match for me?” Wanqi Yanjing said.
She had always known the demon was up to no good inside the Heterogeneous Bone Langhua Jade. She had not hesitated to enter a demonic state herself just to find the best way to destroy it. Now, she had finally attained enlightenment.
The demon watched them silently, seemingly calculating whether it could defeat them.
Lingyue asked Wanqi Yanjing, “Is Yiqing alright?”
“She is about to awaken as the Parasol Divine Tree. At this moment, I cannot let her take any risks, so I entrusted her to Jiang Xian’er’s side. Currently, my Ancestress’s Love Thread and Jiang Xian are guarding her.”
“That is for the best,” Lingyue said. “Then let us join forces to resolve this demon. But it is exceedingly cunning and has escaped once before; we must not let it flee again.”
“It is for this very reason that I sought out the immortal artifact, the Yin Spirit Banner. I shall also need to borrow Senior’s Sagely Command Arrow,” Wanqi Yanjing said.
“Young Wanqi, how did you know I possessed such an immortal artifact, and how are you so certain you can subdue it?” Lingyue could not help but feel curious.
“I learned of it from the Feather-Tail Hill; they have rather loose tongues. I hope Senior will not take offense.”
“I am not so petty as that,” Lingyue said, flicking out her Command Arrow.
Wanqi Yanjing snapped the Command Arrow onto her fingertips. The arrow-clip on her hand instantly glowed, forming the shape of a Divine Phoenix Bow. The divine bow drew the Command Arrow, pointing it directly at the demon.
“Senior, just watch and you shall see.”
Because she herself was also a demon, the Yin Spirit Banner would obey her command. Once the spirits within the banner drifted out, the demon would uncontrollably merge with the spirits. In that instant, she would use the Command Arrow to nail it to the Yin Spirit Banner. Surrounded by Phoenix Divine Fire, the demon would have nowhere to hide.
Wanqi Yanjing raised the banner with her right hand, and as expected, it drew the world’s many demonic entities toward it. The demonic horde was massive, and the demon looked quite triumphant.
“If this continues, I can destroy that demon with all my strength, but I cannot guarantee that I can wipe out all the other demons, and I will have to pay the price of losing half of my immortal bones,” Wanqi Yanjing mused. Although she had prepared for the worst, if she went through with it, Yiqing would be worried.
Having settled Jiang Yuning safely, Qiyun called out loudly, “Empress, I shall also lend you a hand!”
Inside the Star-Gazing Platform, the Love Thread of Wanqi Sangyan hovered beside the seedling of the Divine Tree. It was very strange; the Divine Tree was still not growing.
“The Divine Tree should be irrigated with Love Threads; that is the use of the heart. There is also the use of the body, which requires…” Jiang Xian searched through all the records she had read over the years. She re-read the passages related to the Divine Wood several times and finally found the key point.
“Requires what?” Wanqi Sangyan asked anxiously.
Watching the chaos unfold below, if the Divine Tree could be cultivated first, Wanqi Yanjing could become an immortal and indestructible Phoenix. But if it was not cultivated in time and something happened to Wanqi Yanjing, they would have no way to give an account to Jiang Yiqing.
“Tears of true love,” Jiang Xian said blankly.
She had never imagined that the Divine Tree was such a sentient thing.
“Then what should we do?”
Jiang Xian said, “Wait a moment.”
She flew to her bedchamber and took a white porcelain bottle from her bedside cabinet. Inside that bottle were the tears she had collected over many years.
“I do not know if this will work,” Jiang Xian said. “I collected these tears during the times I missed you.”
“…” Wanqi Sangyan was now even more nervous than she was. If it worked, it meant Jiang Xian still held true feelings for her. If it failed, it meant her departure had completely broken Jiang Xian’s heart, and she no longer wished to see her.
“Let’s try it,” Jiang Xian finally said.
Jiang Xian poured the tears onto the seedling of the Divine Tree. Immediately, the seedling grew tall at a speed visible to the naked eye, instantly reaching a hand’s span in height.
While Jiang Xian took care of Jiang Yiqing, she also watched the battle. Seeing the vast number of demonic creatures, she released the artifact “Starfall.” The artifact shot into the sky like a firework, transforming into ten thousand points of starlight rain that fell toward the earth.
“Xian’er.” Wanqi Sangyan remembered back then, when she and Jiang Xian had pledged their love. Jiang Xian had said she would find an incredibly beautiful divine object to give to her as a gift.
“You weren’t talking about this back then, were you?”
“You’re overthinking it,” Jiang Xian said. “I am merely sending a signal to the Immortal Manors.”
As those star-showers exploded, cultivators could see the characters within them, explaining the battle between immortals and demons in the mortal realm.
The matter had become so grand that the various Immortal Sects could no longer stand by and watch. Moreover, if even mortals were working so hard, how could they not set a proper example?
Langhuan Immortal Manor was the first to move, followed closely by the Phoenix Map Immortal Manor.
Thousands of disciples from the Immortal Sects arrived at Wanqi Yanjing’s side to support her.
“Sister Wanqi, you only need to focus on controlling the Command Arrow. We will be responsible for blocking the demon’s path of retreat!”
“Then I shall replenish the spiritual power of the Demon-Sealing Array!”
“I will provide healing for you all!”
An unprecedented battle immediately commenced.
This time, the demon that had been pulling strings from the shadows could no longer escape.
Wanqi Yanjing drew the divine bow and nailed the demon firmly to the Yin Spirit Banner. The demonic body burned fiercely within the Phoenix True Fire until that hideous face could no longer be seen.
“I intended to stop them from becoming immortals, but instead I was killed by them!”
“I am unwilling!” The demon let out a blurred sound before finally vanishing completely from the world of men.
Wanqi Yanjing looked at the scene, feeling a deep sense of satisfaction. In the haze, she seemed to see the figure of an Immortal Official. For some reason, she was certain it was herself.
“You have done well, guarding her generation after generation. You will surely have a day where you return as true immortals,” Wanqi Yanjing heard the figure say.
“I will,” Wanqi Yanjing responded firmly in her heart.
She might not have done well enough so far, but she believed that ahead lay only gentle years.
