- Chapter 56 - The Miao Maiden’s Childhood Betrothal (Part XXVI)
“Are you Xiao Zhi?” Zhao Xiran arrived at Yushan Experimental Middle School. After asking around, she eventually found Xiao Zhi.
Xiao Zhi was laughing and chatting with several other Miao girls, looking very cheerful. Noticing Zhao Xiran, whose attire was distinctly different from the others, she bid farewell to her friends and walked over to a spot beneath the shade of a tree with Zhao Xiran.
“I am. May I ask who you are?”
“I am Jiang Yiqing’s roommate. She and Shui Mingsheng asked me to bring you back.” As she spoke, Zhao Xiran dialed a number.
Jiang Yiqing’s voice came through the phone: “Xiao Zhi, please come back for a moment. Mingsheng and I have something to discuss with you.”
Xiao Zhi replied, “Alright, Sister Yiqing.”
Zhao Xiran had a teleportation talisman given to her by Jiang Yiqing. She took Xiao Zhi and instantly teleported back to the room Zhao Xiran rented off-campus.
Xiao Zhi sat on the sofa, clutching the glass of water Zhao Xiran had served her with a look of unease.
A short while later, the doorbell rang. Zhao Xiran opened the door, and Jiang Yiqing and Shui Mingsheng walked in.
Xiao Zhi looked at them in pleasant surprise.
Though it had only been a few days since they last met, she noticed that the sisters’ expressions were somewhat solemn, as if they had encountered a major problem.
Jiang Yiqing and Shui Mingsheng sat on the sofa as well. After chatting briefly with Xiao Zhi about school, Jiang Yiqing said, “Xiao Zhi, we may have encountered an enemy, so we have to ask you to stay here for a while.”
“I promise you, we will resolve this matter as quickly as possible, and then you can go back to school,” Shui Mingsheng added.
“I’m fine,” Xiao Zhi said with a smile. “I know you must be doing something very important. I definitely don’t want to hold you back.”
“Sect Master, I have something to report to you.”
The doors to the Tiantong Pavilion opened, and Li Shi walked inside.
“Li Shi, it’s you. What is the matter?”
Li Shi told Wu Xing his deductions. The fact that Xiao Zhi had been taken away deepened his suspicions; no, he was almost certain that Wen Qing was actually Shui Mingsheng.
“She actually has such capability? Isn’t she just a young girl who recently became a village chief?”
“But now she has become a Gu Master on par with you.” Li Shi was thinking that while the snipe and the clam grapple, the fisherman gets the catch—but he had to pin the blame entirely on Wu Xing to make Shui Mingsheng turn her sights against him.
With Xiao Zhi gone, who else was left to restrain them? That woman Xia Yi had the Tree Gu, so forget her. What about Xin Fang?
“Sect Master, you’ll know the truth if you ask Elder Xin Fang. She has withheld information; her intentions are treasonous.”
…
“Xin Fang, it isn’t right of you to lie to me as well.” Inside Tiantong Pavilion, Wu Xing had urgently recalled Xin Fang to ask if she knew anything regarding the White Emperor Dream-Bright Gu.
Xin Fang claimed she didn’t know. At that moment, the Truth Gu showed no obvious reaction. However, when Wu Xing changed his line of questioning and asked, “Are you hiding anything from me?” and Xin Fang replied “No,” the Truth Gu began to spin in anxious circles.
Xin Fang knew Wu Xing possessed some unknown and powerful Gu insects, but based on that single sentence, she couldn’t tell if he was bluffing.
Xin Fang insisted: “Sect Master, everything I have said is the truth.”
“The truth?” Wu Xing stood up. “Then why did the Truth Gu say you are lying! Xin Fang, how dare you betray me! Have you forgotten who allowed you to become the Great Elder of the Miao territory?”
Wu Xing cast the flames of the Crimson Flame Jade Emperor Gu into the Truth Gu and used a palm strike to drive it into Xin Fang’s body. He said, “If you don’t speak the truth, this Jade Emperor Flame will burn within you until your body is scorched and split open! Xin Fang, as the number one Medical Gu master in the Miao territory, you have the Ice Silkworm King Gu to protect your body, but can you withstand my Jade Emperor Flame?”
Xin Fang’s body slammed against the gates of Tiantong Pavilion. She lurched forward, spitting out a mouthful of fresh blood. Even though she used her Medical Gu for protection, the flames were too overbearing. She felt as though she had entered an inferno. Within fifteen minutes, this karmic fire generated from within would manifest into physical flames and consume her entire body. At that point, not even a Great Immortal could save her life.
Seeing Xin Fang treated this way, several Gu masters who had arrived upon hearing the commotion couldn’t help but plead for her. “Sect Master, Xin Fang hasn’t done anything wrong. How can you be so cruel?”
“She has contributed so much to our Miao territory. Can you just turn a blind eye to that?”
“What do you know?!” Wu Xing usually maintained a hypocritical facade, but at this critical juncture, he had no choice but to exert his full power. “The White Emperor Dream-Bright Gu has actually threatened the status of my Crimson Flame Imperial Gu! Status, Gu arts—this is why I stand at the peak of the Miao territory! Would you stand by and watch someone climb into your position and then clap and offer your blessings?!”
White Brow and the others looked at him in shock. Of course, they also wanted to compete for the Legacy, but they didn’t seem to have such an intense drive. They hadn’t realized that this was a cruel game where whoever took first place would dominate everything.
Clearly, Wu Xing recognized this and was determined to win by any means necessary.
“The Saintess’s Legacy was inherited by someone long ago!” Wu Xing tried to wake these foolish people up. “The first layer of the Legacy appeared in that giant pit at Daobei Ridge. That single instance created the meteoric rise of Wen Qing! No, she is Shui Mingsheng! You don’t understand at all what power is, or what strength is!”
Wu Xing’s words startled everyone. Indeed, his deduction was logical. A Legacy possessed such absolute power that no one could simply watch as someone else took it away.
White Brow and the others were no match for Wu Xing, and Li Shi had already used his influence to gather his own team. As for that Xu Shou, he was certainly no ordinary person either! They had to unite to compete against these few, let alone the Wen Qing who had been hiding in the shadows!
“Xin Fang, do you still refuse to speak the truth?”
Now, not only Wu Xing but the others also looked at Xin Fang with malice, completely disregarding their past friendship. They asked her, “Shui Mingsheng is Wen Qing. Xin Fang, you officiated her wedding—you’ve been in league with each other for a long time, haven’t you?”
The moment Xin Fang saw the words “Dream-Bright,” she had made the connection: Wen Qing was Shui Mingsheng.
But she could never admit this fact. Even though they spoke with such certainty, she would not confess. She was willing to sacrifice herself for this.
“Just use my Gu insect; I have the ‘Soul-Searching Gu,'” a Gu master stepped forward and said. “Using this to interrogate someone about hidden secrets is the easiest thing, because memories do not lie.”
Xin Fang was struck by the Soul-Searching technique and spat out another mouthful of blood. They saw her most vivid memory: attending Shui Mingsheng’s wedding. At the wedding, she drank the wine of blessing. She had proactively helped Shui Mingsheng remove the Curse Gu. Jiang Yiqing said to her, “Elder Xin Fang, we would be very happy to receive your blessing.” They saw Xin Fang writing in her notebook that she wanted Jiang Yiqing to be the next successor of the Medical Gu.
However, no matter how much they searched, they could not find any memories related to the White Emperor Dream-Bright Gu. Every time a figure seemed about to emerge in Xin Fang’s memory, it was ruthlessly suppressed by her own consciousness. As a healer, she possessed a mental fortitude stronger than anyone else, and she had long known about these insidious Gu insects of the Miao territory, preparing herself accordingly.
“Xin Fang, you really hold deep affection for those two girls, but is there any use in refusing to admit it?”
“Better to kill one mistakenly than to let a hundred go,” Wu Xing said.
Xin Fang’s consciousness began to feel fear. At that moment, Wu Xing laughed loudly and said, “It’s them! It’s definitely them!”
“In two hours, I will be able to inherit the second layer of the Legacy. By then, I will kill them. How can they possibly fight me?” Wu Xing laughed wildly toward the sky.
Just as Xin Fang was in unbearable agony, a giant hand suddenly reached out from within Tiantong Pavilion. The hand was fair and slender like a woman’s, and it snatched Xin Fang away.
The crowd watched as the Soul-Searching Gu and the Truth Gu, mixed with flames, fell from her body, only to be firmly grasped by another giant hand.
“What is this?”
Tiantong Pavilion was suddenly plunged into darkness. No one could see a thing, yet a hand moved freely through the space.
“Xin Fang has been taken!”
“It doesn’t matter.” Wu Xing waved his hand and said, “This merely confirms that Shui Mingsheng is indeed Wen Qing.”
Still shaken, Xin Fang found herself inside a massive white door, seeing Shui Mingsheng and Jiang Yiqing.
“Elder Xin Fang!” The two rushed to her side in concern. Jiang Yiqing immediately bought some medicine for internal injuries and mental stability from the system mall and fed it to her.
After taking the medicine, Xin Fang felt a bit better. Though she was seriously injured, she still blamed herself: “I didn’t expect to become a burden to you. I’m so sorry.”
Shui Mingsheng said, “You suffered because of us.”
“But I didn’t help you with anything.”
“You were the one who helped us remove my Curse Gu,” Shui Mingsheng said. “Elder Xin Fang, we have become stronger than before, so it is only right that we protect you in return.”
“Those people are true beasts.” The anger had not faded from Xin Fang’s face. “I don’t know how they caught your scent. What do we do now?”
Now that they were exposed, they didn’t need to worry about school. Jiang Yiqing erased the portal in the dormitory and said, “We’ll go to Teacher Xia’s place to lay low for a while.”
In truth, staying inside the Gate of Daylight was the safest, but time didn’t flow there; it was just escaping reality. In two hours, the Legacy would appear. Regardless, they had to hold out until then.
“By the way, how did you do it?” Xin Fang was also curious. In a place like Tiantong Pavilion where experts gathered and the barriers were strong, how did that giant hand descend from the sky and refine the Truth and Soul-Searching Gu in an instant? That display of power was already no less than Wu Xing’s.
Jiang Yiqing said, “It was truly a critical moment. After Mingsheng obtained the first layer of the Legacy, she gained the ability to use the ‘Saintly Hand’ power of the Saintess once. That’s how we brought you back.”
The two exchanged a look; they had indeed been pushed to the limit. Upon learning Elder Xin Fang had been taken, Shui Mingsheng wanted to mortgage the White Emperor Dream-Bright Gu to the system to gain supreme power. However, with spiritual energy being so scarce now, it would be difficult to redeem the Gu. In their desperation, the power of the thousand-year-old Saintess suddenly awakened in Shui Mingsheng. Although the power vanished completely after one use, it had been enough.
“To think it was the Saintly Hand power…” Xin Fang sighed with emotion. “As expected of the thousand-year Saintess. These current Gu masters would likely be defenseless before her.”
“If it weren’t for that sudden burst of power, I really don’t know what we would have done.” Shui Mingsheng also began to blame herself. “I dragged you all into a dangerous situation. I didn’t think things through.”
“Mingsheng, luck is also a form of strength. Besides, how do you know the Saintess isn’t watching over you?” Jiang Yiqing hugged Shui Mingsheng’s waist to comfort her. “Furthermore, in my view, the way those people targeted you is very suspicious.”
“Yiqing, why do you say that?” Both of them looked at her. Indeed, they felt they had been flawless, but when Wu Xing exposed them, they assumed they simply hadn’t been perfect enough and had left a loophole.
“Instead of doubting ourselves, we should question the enemy,” Jiang Yiqing said. “Just as I have a system that helps me a lot, perhaps the enemy has a hidden helper as well?”
“I can always count on you, Yiqing.” Shui Mingsheng felt her spirits lift again; she could move forward bravely once more. “I will definitely become stronger than I am today. I will definitely pay them back a hundredfold for what they did to Elder Xin Fang!”
