- Chapter 44 - The Miao Maiden’s Childhood Betrothal (Part XIV)
The Wedding of Two Hearts
Shui Mingsheng took a sip of clear tea. With Jiang Yiqing by her side, her heart had settled significantly. She addressed Elder Xinfang, saying, “Elder Xinfang, your medical skills are transcendent. Before coming here, you must have already investigated the Five Venoms Cave. I ask for your guidance; Mingsheng is still kept in the dark, and without your judgment, I find it impossible to untangle the threads of this matter for the time being.”
Hearing her speak so eloquently and calmly, the several attendants in the group secretly admired her. After all, Shui Mingsheng was at an age of high spirits and vigor; to remain so humble was truly no easy feat. However, Xin fang detected a hint of strangeness. The matter of the Five Venoms Cave and the Curse Gu had been reported to the Sect Leader by Shui Mingsheng herself, which was what triggered their investigation. Xin fang felt that Shui Mingsheng definitely knew something but was intentionally playing dumb in front of them, perhaps even trying to probe their own stance in return.
Nevertheless, since Shui Mingsheng had put it that way and they were not on opposing sides, Xin fang replied, “Indeed, I have investigated the Five Venoms Cave. For some reason, the poisonous insects in the cave have all vanished, leaving behind only two terrified corpses. It looked as though they were devoured by some kind of Secret Gu. As for that Curse Gu, it remains in the Five Venoms Cave to this day. Chieftain Shui, that you can remain so composed is quite astonishing.”
Shui Mingsheng let out a bitter laugh and said, “I have been restricted by that Curse Gu for many years; I have long since grown used to it. At this point, what is there left to fear?”
Xin fang was secretly shocked; this level of courage was truly admirable.
“Has Chieftain Shui been to the Five Venoms Cave?”
“After the villagers reported it, I went to investigate immediately. Had I not seen it personally, I would not have dared report it to the Sect Leader. Therefore, I know that the Curse Gu is targeting the Spirit Snake Gu, the heirloom Gu of the Shui family.”
“I see,” Xin fang said. “What is Chieftain Shui’s question now?”
“Who wanted to kill Elder Feng?” Shui Mingsheng asked. “Elder Feng usually made things difficult for me, but he was an elder of the stockade after all. His sudden death is a cause for grief.”
But you don’t exactly look grief-stricken, do you? Xin fang thought to herself, though she did not voice it. It was normal to be happy when an enemy died, but this matter was bizarre.
Xin fang had used various Gu insects to analyze the footprints and soil at the scene long ago, but she found nothing out of the ordinary. If there had been evidence that was erased, then that person’s work was exceptionally clean.
She could only examine the two bodies, but she found no trace of any Gu insects. The terrified expressions on their faces made it look as though they had been frightened to death. Most peculiar of all was the body of Lian Ye—he had been dead for over ten days, yet everyone claimed to have seen him just a few days ago.
“So, you’re saying those two went to the Five Venoms Cave for no apparent reason and died, and the poisonous insects in the cave vanished along with them?” Xin fang asked.
“Perhaps the Five Venoms Cave was a trap they set themselves?” Shui Mingsheng suggested. “Otherwise, why would the Chieftain of Lianye Stockade be traveling with Elder Feng? I simply do not know their reasons for doing so.”
“Chieftain Shui, that Chieftain Lian had been dead for a long time,” Xin fang said.
“What? …How could that be?” Shui Mingsheng’s expression was clearly one of delayed realization. “You’ve confused me, Elder. What exactly happened?”
Xin fang couldn’t be certain either, but if she looked at it simply, the case was easy to judge—only Xu Shou could manipulate corpses. This meant Xu Shou had refined Lian Ye into a Corpse Gu, and when Elder Feng discovered this upon arriving at the Five Venoms Cave, Xu Shou simply killed them both.
But why do it? The target of the Curse Gu was clearly Shui Mingsheng, but was she involved in this? There was no evidence to prove her participation.
The most critical question was: if it wasn’t Xu Shou, who in these three stockades of the Qingjiang River would have the strength to do such a thing?
Could the girl before her be a suspect? They leaned on each other with such deep affection; if they had truly killed someone, could they really be this calm?
No, that was impossible.
Xin fang decided to report the matter of Chieftain Lian to the Sect Leader, but she temporarily kept it from Shui Mingsheng to avoid causing panic.
The case would be closed with Xu Shou as the primary suspect.
Xin fang said, “During my stay here, I will help Chieftain Shui remove that Curse Gu. For you, this truly was an undeserved calamity.”
Upon hearing this, both Shui Mingsheng and Jiang Yiqing expressed heartfelt gratitude. They glanced at each other and said in unison, “Thank you, Elder Xinfang, for your help.”
“Miss Jiang, I heard you say earlier that you are going away to study. Will you be leaving the Miao territory soon?” Xin fang asked.
“Yes,” Jiang Yiqing replied.
“Your affairs are for you to decide,” Xin fang said, turning back to Shui Mingsheng. “If you are serious, the road ahead of you will not be easy.”
Shui Mingsheng said, “We are serious. I currently have the Love Gu within me.”
As soon as these words were spoken, everyone present looked at the two of them in utter shock.
“Love Gu?”
“To actually find a Love Gu…”
“And two young women… they don’t look like the type to do something so reckless.”
The attendants whispered among themselves.
“Yes, Elder Xinfang. My heart for Yiqing is clear to heaven and earth, witnessed by the sun and moon. What is wrong with planting a Love Gu for her?”
“She is always like this. I suppose I’ve lost to her,” Jiang Yiqing said, her smile sweet. “When I learned she had done this, I knew I was stuck with her for the rest of my life. But I believe we will grow old together in harmony.”
Jiang Yiqing and Shui Mingsheng locked eyes, holding hands, their gaze filled with unwavering determination.
“Actually, Yiqing and I are about to hold our wedding. If Elder Xin fang is not in a hurry, why not stay and attend?”
Shui Mingsheng’s words shocked Xin fang once again. She asked Jiang Yiqing, “Have you truly thought this through? You want to be a bride of the Miao territory?”
“Because I am certain, I don’t want to leave myself a way out,” Jiang Yiqing said. “Completing the wedding before I go to school will allow Mingsheng to officially become the Chieftain and prove my devotion to her. It kills two birds with one stone, so why not?”
Xin fang couldn’t tell if she felt it was madness or if she felt envious, but the romances she had seen in the past seemed like a joke compared to these two young women.
Shui Mingsheng looked at Xin fang and asked with a smile, “Elder Xinfang, you believe we will be happy, don’t you? We would be very glad to have your blessing.”
Xin fang had initially been suspicious of their innocence, but now her emotional priorities had shifted in their favor. She had come to investigate a crime, but she found herself won over by their intelligence and their bond.
“You are willing to plant the Love Gu for her; how could I not offer my blessing?” Xin fang said, a rare smile appearing on her face.
Every region has different totems and beliefs. In the Miao territory, someone willing to plant the Love Gu for their beloved was a person most worthy of respect.
“Very well, I shall stay here to witness your wedding.”
“Then we would like to ask Elder Xin fang to be our officiant.” Shui Mingsheng saw that Jiang Yiqing wanted to learn medicine from Xin fang, and this was a perfect opportunity to build a closer relationship.
“Fine.”
Meanwhile, Jiang Xuerou and Shui Xi had already boarded a plane to N City.
A day later, Shui Mingsheng and Jiang Yiqing finally reached the day of their grand wedding.
The entire Qingyu Building was decorated into a sea of fresh flowers.
Xiao Zhi and a young girl from a neighboring stockade served as the flower girls for the two of them.
Holding hands, they delivered the rings into Shui Mingsheng’s hands.
Both Shui Mingsheng and Jiang Yiqing wore wedding dresses. Jiang Yiqing held a bouquet, looking breathtakingly beautiful.
Shui Mingsheng swept an arm around Jiang Yiqing’s waist and lifted her up. In her startled state, Jiang Yiqing instinctively wrapped her arms around Mingsheng’s neck, prompting bursts of cheers and applause from the crowd.
Shui Mingsheng slipped the ring onto Jiang Yiqing’s ring finger, and Jiang Yiqing did the same for her.
Together, they shared “vow cookies.” On them were written:
“Jiang Yiqing loves Shui Mingsheng for ten thousand years.”
“Shui Mingsheng loves Jiang Yiqing for ten thousand and one years.”
They shared the wedding cake together.
“Happy Wedding to Shui Mingsheng & Jiang Yiqing!”
Confetti cannons roared, and on the flower-adorned stage, camera flashes clicked incessantly.
The following day, a traditional Miao-style wedding was held.
The bridal sedan chair was carried from the shores of the shimmering green lake all the way to the stilted building.
The two wore modernized versions of Miao traditional wedding attire, heavily embroidered with pearls and featuring phoenix motifs in gold thread—extraordinarily lavish.
Shui Mingsheng carried Jiang Yiqing on her back, crossing threshold after threshold into the main hall for the formal bows.
Jiang Yiqing felt as though she had returned to ancient times, as if that day had come once more, but this time she was marrying the person she truly loved.
Watching her daughter, Shui Xi smiled and said to her in-law, “Xuerou, the agreement we made all those years ago has finally come true. Not just Mingsheng—even I feel like I’m dreaming.”
Jiang Xuerou said, “As long as the two children are happy, I am satisfied.”
She raised her glass and clinked it with Shui Xi’s, both of them looking at the beloved daughters they had poured their hearts into raising.
“I am very glad everyone could come to the wedding of Mingsheng and her beloved, Yiqing,” Xin fang said as she presided over the ceremony. “Yiqing comes from a distant place, a place we Miao people might never go. But Yiqing bravely chose our Miao daughter—the current Chieftain of Qingfeng Stockade, Mingsheng. Mingsheng is an ambitious and excellent girl; to be honest, she is more outstanding than many people here, perhaps even including myself. I look forward to their future and sincerely wish that their love never fades, just like the eternal flowers of the Miao territory!”
The wedding proceeded.
“Yiqing, are you willing to marry me?!” Shui Mingsheng shouted at the top of her lungs to the entire hall, then turned her gaze, brimming with love, toward the girl who held her heart.
Her fingers brushed against Jiang Yiqing’s, causing Yiqing’s hand to tremble uncontrollably. She brought the hand wearing the ring to her lips and pressed a gentle kiss upon it.
“I am willing,” Jiang Yiqing said.
“Kiss her!” “Kiss her!” the crowd chanted.
In that moment, time seemed to stop. They saw only each other, holding hands and kissing with lingering, deep affection.
After the guests offered their toasts, Shui Mingsheng grew tipsy. Under the influence of the Love Gu, this intoxication fermented into a new longing. She carried her beloved girl to the bridal chamber they had meticulously prepared.
