Elder Chilu stepped forward and spoke, “Everyone, settle down. There is truly no need to trouble Elder Xin fang further. Let the matter of Zhao Er end here; bury him in the cemetery.”
“Elder, is this matter just going to be brushed aside like this? Did Brother Zhao Er not die a most unjust death?” Xu Guang asked.
Elder Chilu glanced at him. “Even if he was murdered, the perpetrator acted flawlessly. We have no way of finding concrete evidence to bring them to justice, much like the death of Qiu Shu years ago. However, unrighteousness leads to self-destruction. The heavens are watching what people do; there will eventually come a time when they slip up.”
Feng Zheng’s face turned pale upon hearing this.
Elder Chilu’s words temporarily appeased the crowd, and no one clamored for further action.
He looked toward Shui Mingsheng again and said, “Mingsheng, I know these years in the stockade haven’t been easy for you, but you should treat your fellow tribesmen with a more forgiving heart. Today’s incident has nothing to do with you; set your mind at ease. No one can find fault with your strength; the entire Qingfeng Stockade will be loyal to you.”
Shui Mingsheng sensed that Elder Chilu intended to use a gentler, conciliatory approach, so she said, “Elder Chilu, regarding my status—can you represent the elders and state a position?”
Elder Chilu looked at Jiang Yiqing, then back at her, and said, “As long as you start a family, someone will present the household register symbolizing the Stockade Leader to the Clan Head. No one will oppose you taking the position of Stockade Leader.”
“Fine, it’s a deal.” Shui Mingsheng’s voice was not loud, but beside the bonfire, it sounded deafeningly powerful. “In today’s Gu-Fighting Competition, I have proven to everyone that I have the strength to be the Stockade Leader. In the future, regardless of which elder it is, please speak and act with caution. If I catch anyone committing evils such as murder, arson, or framing others, I will show absolutely no leniency.”
Upon hearing this, Elder Feng immediately slipped away.
Although Jiang Yiqing was in the Miao territory, she still received many messages over the past few days, all sent by her friends from middle and high school.
“Yiqing, I went to find you to hang out, and your mom said you went to the Miao region? Heavens, I feel like that’s the kind of place where horror movies are filmed. Are you okay?”
“Yiqing, it’s almost time to submit our college preferences. Where do you plan to study?”
The previous Jiang Yiqing was a girl with great interpersonal skills. As Jiang Yiqing looked at those messages, she thought about how Jiang Yiqing was no longer in this world—perhaps they had swapped time and space? She wondered how that girl was doing after marrying into the Si family. Did she perhaps like General Si a little?
As a lady from a prestigious family, Yiqing shouldn’t have to suffer much after marrying into the Si family. Thinking about it this way made her feel much better. After all, the degree of freedom in this world was much better than in her original world; she had been very worried that the previous Yiqing wouldn’t be able to adapt.
It was a miraculous feeling—there was someone with the same appearance and name as her. Though their personalities differed, it felt as though another version of herself was living in the world, and she immediately felt much less lonely. It was as if a presence was accompanying her through some unseen providence.
Once Jiang Yiqing had thought it through, she replied to her friends’ messages. Naturally, the original Yiqing’s friends were now her friends too.
“It’s not as terrifying as you all think. The Miao region has beautiful mountains and clear waters; it’s a good place.”
“I’m not sure where I’ll study yet. I plan to discuss it with my parents, but I’ll probably study medicine.”
Jiang Yiqing felt that studying medicine would be best, especially Traditional Chinese Medicine. Since she had a foundation in that area, it shouldn’t be too taxing. However, considering that this might be difficult for the original Yiqing should they swap back, she felt it would be better to take a minor in a more widely applicable profession to account for any accidents.
That day, Shui Mingsheng said to Jiang Yiqing happily, “Yiqing, I’ve received word that a Miao merchant caravan will be passing through our stockade in two days. If there’s anything you want to buy, you can buy to your heart’s content then.”
In the technologically advanced modern era, a merchant caravan was considered a very primitive group. However, the Miao merchant caravans were slightly different.
“The caravan is large and carries many rare treasures and Gu insects. They only stop at the larger Miao stockades. This time I heard they plan to stay at Qingfeng Stockade for a while to conduct trade. Our Green Leaf Gu isn’t found in any other stockade; they can be used for light, and many people outside treasure them dearly.”
“Never mind what I buy; the main thing is to let the Qingfeng Stockade benefit,” Jiang Yiqing said.
Shui Mingsheng replied, “I will worry about the affairs of the stockade. Yiqing, you just need to worry about what you like.”
