- Chapter 34.1 - The Miaojiang Girl's Childhood Betrothal (Part IV)
Guided by the system, Jiang Yiqing’s consciousness entered space. It displayed that the Green Jade Flute could be sold for 16-star coins, while the Miao Language Pack required 100-star coins.
After wandering around the stilt house for a while, text suddenly appeared before her eyes again.
“Deer Antler Lingzhi Fragment × 1”
“Lingzhi is good stuff! Fortunately, the Miao village is full of treasures. Host, if you spend some time looking, it won’t be hard to afford the Miao Language Pack,” the system remarked.
Jiang Yiqing collected the Lingzhi. Turning around, she saw Shui Mingsheng watching her quietly from a short distance away. Realizing her series of actions must have looked incredibly bizarre, she felt a bit embarrassed. She walked up to Shui Mingsheng and said, “Mingsheng, I won’t run around aimlessly anymore.”
Shui Mingsheng replied, “I didn’t expect you to have such a childlike side, Yiqing. You are, of course, free to move as you wish. It’s a good thing that you’re curious about our Miao village.”
With that, she led Jiang Yiqing to the second floor and into the room she had prepared for her. When Jiang Yiqing stepped inside, she found it bright and clean. The carved wooden furniture possessed a classical charm, and the embroidered bed was covered in soft quilts that smelled of the sun. There was even a large princess doll placed on the bed.
Mingsheng had prepared this with great care, and it made Jiang Yiqing feel warmth from the bottom of her heart.
“In Miaojiang, one must still wear our traditional attire for important occasions. Yiqing, I’ve specially prepared a set of clothes for you. See if you like them.” Shui Mingsheng took a set of clothes from the wardrobe. They had a dark blue base with silver bells at the waist. The craftsmanship was clearly heavy and intricate, with colorful silk threads interlacing to form various mysterious patterns.
There isn’t a girl alive who doesn’t like beautiful clothes. Urged by Shui Mingsheng, Jiang Yiqing went to change. When she emerged, Shui Mingsheng’s eyes were fixed, unable to look away. She praised her repeatedly: “Yiqing, you are truly beautiful.”
Jiang Yiqing looked at Shui Mingsheng and said, “You are very beautiful too.”
Shui Mingsheng smiled and said, “Then I shall perform a dance for you, to celebrate the destiny that guided our encounter, and to celebrate Yiqing’s arrival at Qingfeng Ridge.”
Jiang Yiqing hadn’t expected such a performance. Miao women were skilled dancers, let alone a great beauty like Mingsheng.
What does she mean by this? Is it a simple welcome, or…?
“Host, in Miaojiang, Miao girls only dance when they are courting. This Shui Mingsheng… her intentions are as clear as day…”
Jiang Yiqing’s face flushed hot. She felt a mix of fear and an indescribable sensation; her heart immediately began to thud, and as Shui Mingsheng danced, her heartbeat followed the rhythm like a drumbeat.
Shui Mingsheng began the unique steps of the Miao dance. Her arms moved softly yet with great power, and her footwork was as nimble as a whirling top. Her skirt gathered and swirled like a closing lotus leaf. The agile steps were dizzying to follow, possessing a kind of magic that made Jiang Yiqing’s heart swell with emotion.
A musical rhythm rose within Jiang Yiqing’s heart along with the dance. She lost herself in the moment; simply watching was not in her nature, so she picked up a nearby hand drum to accompany Shui Mingsheng.
Seeing this, Shui Mingsheng appeared even more invigorated. Her steps quickened several-fold as she whirled; it became difficult for the eyes to keep up with her movements. She was like a fluttering butterfly, her dance so complex and graceful that she seemed a peerless dancer. Jiang Yiqing couldn’t keep up with her pace, so Shui Mingsheng slowed her steps again, the dance turning more lyrical and expressive.
Shui Mingsheng possessed an unparalleled power of infection. Jiang Yiqing was so mesmerized that when Shui Mingsheng reached out to take her hand, Jiang Yiqing offered no resistance. She followed in her footsteps and began to dance alongside her.
Jiang Yiqing only knew the dances she had observed in the past, and she only managed to mimic them about fifty or sixty percent, but it was enough to surprise Shui Mingsheng. Shui Mingsheng coordinated her own movements entirely to complement Jiang Yiqing’s, bringing the distance between them infinitely closer. Jiang Yiqing’s face was flushed rosy—she no longer knew if it was from the dancing or the person before her. The faint fragrance emanating from the other girl made her feel as though she had entered a field of flowers.
The maidens of Miaojiang… perhaps they really can cast spells on people. Such a thought surfaced in Jiang Yiqing’s mind.
Eventually, Jiang Yiqing collapsed from exhaustion. Shui Mingsheng led her to a nearby sofa to lie down, leaning over to gaze at her intently.
“So beautiful… my Yiqing,” Shui Mingsheng sighed.
Her breath brushed against Jiang Yiqing’s face. Jiang Yiqing had never encountered someone like this; she was like a wood spirit from a storybook.
Holding the fragrant, soft girl in her gaze, Shui Mingsheng saw that Jiang Yiqing was so shy she didn’t know what to do with herself. Knowing when to stop, she straightened up.
After tidying her luggage, Jiang Yiqing prepared to go out and collect some Lingzhi. Shui Mingsheng had to attend a meeting with the elders of Qingfeng Ridge for the Gu-Fighting Festival in three days. Worried about leaving Jiang Yiqing alone, she handed her a small wooden box.
Jiang Yiqing opened it to find a jade-green insect lying inside.
“This is the Fear Gu. Once it senses a human approaching, it will awaken from its slumber, and I will be able to sense its change,” Shui Mingsheng explained. “Yiqing, keep this with you. If you encounter danger, I will come to your side immediately.”
“Alright.” Jiang Yiqing tucked the Fear Gu away, thinking to herself that the Gu insects of Miaojiang were real. Was the insect I saw on Shui Mingsheng’s left hand yesterday real too?
Jiang Yiqing searched for Lingzhi around the Qingyu Building. There were white Lingzhi, purple Lingzhi, and after working for quite a while, she finally gathered eight stalks. Not only could she buy the Miao Language Pack, but she also had 25-star coins left over.
She checked her phone and found the internet connection was intermittent, making it impossible to reply properly to Jiang Xuerou’s messages.
“Host, 25-star coins is exactly enough to buy a Super Data Pack. It’ll last you for the duration of your summer break here.”
Although Jiang Yiqing didn’t know the names for many things in this world, she could roughly guess their meanings. Thus, she bought the data pack and successfully sent a message to Jiang Xuerou to let her know she was safe.
“Yiqing, don’t try to be brave. If you don’t want to stay, tell Mom, and I’ll come get you myself.” After Jiang Yiqing had left, Jiang Xuerou had become increasingly worried, feeling her decision had been too hasty; after all, this concerned her daughter’s lifelong happiness.
“Mom, don’t worry. I’ve arrived at the Miao village, and everything is fine here.”
“Yiqing, I heard from Shui xi that there are seventy-two Miao villages. They are divided into ‘Raw’ and ‘Cooked’ villages. The Cooked Miao interact with the outside world, but the Raw Miao are very xenophobic. Qingfeng Ridge is a Raw Miao village where they don’t speak Mandarin. You aren’t forcing yourself, are you?”
“I’m really fine.”
Jiang Yiqing sounded quite firm, which surprised Jiang Xuerou.
“Well then, come back in two months. Miaojiang is too complicated; it’s not a place for a girl from an ordinary family like ours to frequent.”
“Mom, nothing is set in stone yet. Don’t worry.”
“Alright, just remember to video call me every day.”
“Mhm, okay.”
Once she had internet access, Jiang Yiqing used the web to learn modern knowledge, gradually recognizing the social systems of this world.
In the evening, Shui Mingsheng returned, bringing many dishes in bamboo steamers. She laid the food out on the table and called Jiang Yiqing to eat.
Though there were only two of them, there were five dishes and soup. Immediately, Jiang Yiqing saw that the food was quite similar to what she ate at home.
Shui Mingsheng peeled a river shrimp for her. Jiang Yiqing tasted it and found it delicious.
“It’s not too spicy, is it?”
Jiang Yiqing shook her head.
Shui Mingsheng had specifically contacted the village chef to prepare a special meal for Jiang Yiqing, fearing she might not be used to their food, being a girl from the coastal regions.
“Dinner is a bit late today. I think we can make it earlier tomorrow,” Shui Mingsheng said, checking the clock on the wall.
Jiang Yiqing had originally thought she would be very uncomfortable living here, but she had overthought it because Shui Mingsheng was an exceptionally hospitable person.
“There’s really no need to go to such trouble, Mingsheng. I can adapt,” Jiang Yiqing said.
Shui Mingsheng didn’t quite believe her. Even if Jiang Yiqing said she wanted to leave the next day, Shui Mingsheng wouldn’t have found it strange. Therefore, she had to be doubly good to her.
“I’ll take you out to play tomorrow, and we can feed the Gu insects while we’re at it. This place doesn’t have much, but the scenery is good. Tomorrow, I’ll take you to a creek valley; the banks are covered in flowers. You’ll definitely love it.”
