- Chapter 25 - I Became the Goddess’s Live-in Son-in-Law?? (Part 25)
Si Xuansu leapt into the water, only to see a pitch-black net cage submerged beneath the surface. The water grass spirit was staying inside the cage; upon seeing her, it began to dance with joy. Si Xuansu tried to lift the net cage, feeling that it weighed as much as a thousand catties. However, she was indeed able to lift it. Once she had hauled the iron cage onto the shore, the water grass spirit inside performed a deep bow toward the two of them.
“Two immortal sisters, I knew you both would have a way to help me. It seems I truly did not misidentify you.”
Jiang Yiqing was genuinely shocked to see it trapped inside the cage and asked, “How did you end up staying here?”
“This little spirit once annoyed the River God, so he imprisoned me within a cage forged from an unknown material. This little spirit could not break free, and so I have remained here for several hundred years.”
Upon hearing this, Jiang Yiqing felt it was truly pitiful. She said to Si Xuansu, “Xuansu, can this net cage be broken open?”
“I will try.”
Si Xuansu stood before the half-man-tall cage, gripping her Zhu Yu Sword. She struck down with one sword move using eighty percent of her strength, and a crack appeared upon the net cage.
Although it required some effort, Si Xuansu ultimately managed to break the cage open. The water grass spirit had not expected that the cage could be breached and said joyfully, “Thank you, two immortal sisters.”
Calling them “immortal sisters” again made one feel quite bashful. Jiang Yiqing said, “You mentioned you know the location of the warehouse; please lead the way for us.”
“Naturally,” the water grass spirit said. “My name is A-Liu. Two immortal sisters, if you could remember A-Liu on the day of your Ascension, that would be wonderful.”
Ascension? Jiang Yiqing thought to herself. How could it tell they were practicing cultivation? Then again, although Jiang Yiqing was indeed on the path of cultivation, she was entirely “Buddhist-style” about it; she usually neither meditated nor refined elixirs. She wasn’t even sure if she could ascend and didn’t care much for it, yet this water grass spirit spoke with such certainty, as if it were an absolute fact.
Under A-Liu’s guidance, the two walked forward. A-Liu was extremely familiar with the terrain and led them through several caves, finally coming to a halt in the depths of one cavern.
“It is just ahead,” A-Liu said. “However, there may be traps further on. Two immortal sisters, please be careful.”
Jiang Yiqing nodded, hooking her arm into Si Xuansu’s as they cautiously walked forward. Suddenly, Si Xuansu’s footsteps came to a halt.
Jiang Yiqing watched as she shaved several pieces of stone from the wall and threw them with unerring accuracy toward several positions in the darkness. She then saw the ground in front of them suddenly split apart. Jiang Yiqing knew this was an ancient mechanical trap; she certainly would have found it difficult to cross on her own, so she was grateful that Si Xuansu understood the arts of Qimen Dunjia.
Si Xuansu memorized the pattern of the sinking floor and, after a moment, led Jiang Yiqing forward.
“Yiqing, trust me. Just follow me,” Si Xuansu’s voice drifted over, dispelling the fear in Jiang Yiqing’s heart.
She nodded heavily. With almost every step, the surrounding ground would vibrate and sink, revealing pitch-black bottomless pits. Falling down there would surely mean a grim fate. However, the spots where Si Xuansu led her to land were always safe. Jiang Yiqing huddled closely to her side; the tranquil fragrance and warmth emanating from her body caused Jiang Yiqing’s tension to gradually fade away.
Once they passed the sinking floor trap, the cave suddenly opened, appearing to be a natural warehouse for storing goods. Under the glow of the Night-Luminescent Pearls, Jiang Yiqing could already see some glittering objects.
Approaching for a closer look, she saw rows upon rows of gold bricks lined up densely along the walls. The entire warehouse looked like a house built out of gold bricks. In the center stood many open crates, all of which were filled with weapons, with some weapons even scattered across the floor.
“This is it!” Having finally discovered the warehouse where the Marquis of Huaiyi and the Marquis of Ningyang hid their weapons, Jiang Yiqing could hardly hide her excitement.
“The amount of wealth far exceeds what these Marquis estates should possess. It is evident they have amassed no small number of ill-gotten gains behind the scenes,” Si Xuansu said in a heavy voice.
“Let’s hurry and report this to the Emperor!”
“Mhm.”
However, before leaving, they did not forget to bring A-Liu to the place they wanted to go. Originally, having regained its freedom, it could have gone there itself, but since it was on the way, the two gave it a lift.
The caves were extremely complex. By this time, Jiang Yiqing had already forgotten the way back, but fortunately, Si Xuansu remembered. She led her to the cave entrance, where they happened to encounter the Minister of Justice arriving with his men.
He was currently leading several soldiers in a boat through the winding passages and was just beginning to get lost when he saw the two of them and was overjoyed.
“General Si, so you were both here.”
“Minister of Justice, Yiqing and I have already found the place where the weapons are hidden. Stay here with your men to guard it; we are going to inform the Emperor.”
“What? You’ve already found it?” The Minister of Justice looked at the dense, hill-like maze of caves, unable to believe they had found the hidden warehouse so quickly in a place where one could easily walk in circles.
“This is truly a cause for celebration! General Si and Jiang Son-in-Law have performed a great service this time. The Emperor will surely bestow a heavy reward upon hearing this.” However, he was naturally very happy to have found it, so he cupped his hands with congratulations.
“Rewards are secondary; preventing great chaos from erupting is what matters most.” After saying this, Si Xuansu went ashore and mounted her horse with Jiang Yiqing.
“As expected of General Si, always so noble and righteous.” The Minister of Justice was filled with admiration for her character.
No wonder it was often said in the capital, “One should have a daughter like Si Xuansu.” Such a woman was truly more useful than ten men combined.
The two galloped away, their silhouettes appearing intimate and tender. The Minister of Justice couldn’t help but think again that General Si had achieved success in both her career and her love life—it was truly a case of envying the “Mandarin Ducks” rather than the “Immortals.”
