I Got Together With the Fake Heiress - Chapter 66
Wen Yunqing was very curious about Yu Man’s behavior. Since the instructor told her to rest on the side, she simply stared at Yu Man for a while.
Wen Yunqing then made a discovery: Yu Man’s goose step was extremely lackluster. It could be said that she was dragging down the entire row—no, the entire company—by herself.
The instructor quickly noticed this as well. Seeing no improvement after Yu Man walked four or five times, he singled her out and made her practice the goose step alone.
Yu Man stood out reluctantly. Seeing everyone in the company watching her, her expression grew even darker.
“Attention! Ready! Goose step—walk! One-two-one, one-two-one…” The instructor called out the cadence, frowning at Yu Man’s weak movements.
“Use some strength! Did you not eat!”
“Swing your arms! Straighten your back!”
“If you don’t correct yourself, the entire company will spend this afternoon watching one person practice the goose step!”
Ten minutes later, Yu Man, who refused to be corrected, finally angered the instructor. He simply ordered the entire company to sit in the shade and truly let Yu Man practice alone.
Yu Man bit her lip. She felt she had lost all face today, and her inner shame and indignation gave her an impulse to grab her bag and leave immediately.
Wen Yunqing secretly sat down next to Wen Yimeng at this time. “Yimeng, what’s going on with this Yu Man? Why do I feel like she really holds a grudge against me?”
Wen Yimeng looked around, then tugged on Wen Yunqing’s sleeve, leaning close to her mouth to whisper, “Get rid of the ‘feel like.’ She absolutely holds a grudge against you, because you don’t have to attend military training.”
Wen Yunqing raised an eyebrow. “Just because of that?”
Wen Yimeng nodded. “Yes, because of that. I heard others chatting that this Yu Man was a popular figure in high school, and no one dared to offend her, so her personality isn’t very good.”
While the instructor was focused on training Yu Man, Wen Yimeng recounted the events of that morning.
Wen Yunqing’s expression was one of disgust. “To summarize: Yu Man originally wanted to use me to express her dissatisfaction, but she was slapped down by both the instructor and the supervisor, losing face. Now she’s pinning all the blame on me and holding a grudge.”
Wen Yimeng nodded, giving her a thumbs-up with her left hand. “Accurate summary.”
“By the way, how was your mission today? Did it go smoothly?” Wen Yimeng asked.
Wen Yunqing gave a concise summary. “So-so. Dealt with some scum and rescued one person.”
Wen Yimeng pressed, “Did you get hurt?”
Wen Yunqing shook her head. “No. That person didn’t even touch the hem of my clothes before I dealt with him.”
Wen Yimeng: “That’s good. If the matter is resolved, you shouldn’t be leaving anymore, right?”
Wen Yunqing nodded. “Unless something unexpected happens, I should be able to complete the military training peacefully.”
As soon as she finished speaking, Yu Man, who had been constantly corrected, finally erupted. She snatched off her cap and threw it on the ground. “You are singling me out! I’m not training! I’m leaving this place!”
The instructor’s face was livid as he stared at the cap on the ground. “Pick up the cap for me!”
“I won’t!” Yu Man didn’t know what had gotten into her, but she kicked her cap far away.
The instructor took a deep breath, and seeing Yu Man’s delicate and pampered face, he slowly exhaled. The person in front of him was a student, not an actual recruit; he could train her, but he couldn’t physically strike her.
“I command you, as your instructor: Go pick up the cap now and put it back on your head. I will overlook your current behavior,” the instructor suppressed his anger.
Yu Man had already made her declaration, and she wouldn’t back down. At this point, she ignored what the instructor said, turned around, and walked toward the dorms.
The instructor’s face was grim as he stared at Yu Man’s receding back until she completely disappeared from his sight.
The instructor walked over, picked up Yu Man’s cap, brushed the dust off it, and took it directly to find the supervisor on the training ground.
Five minutes later, the instructor returned empty-handed, his expression much relieved. “Assemble! Fall in!”
“Attention all! Maintain an arm’s distance front to back. Walk the goose step together. Listen to my command!”
The afternoon training routinely ended at 5:00 PM. Thanks to Yu Man’s disruptive behavior, Wen Yunqing hadn’t trained all afternoon. She only rejoined the formation at dinner time.
As expected, Wen Yunqing received another wave of envious glances, but this time, no one dared to say anything.
There was still no training scheduled for this evening. The company assembled punctually at 7:30 PM as required by the instructor to watch a patriotic film indoors.
Before the film began, Wen Yunqing negotiated with the people in the second row, swapped positions, and sat next to her girlfriend.
“Yu Man seems to have been brought back by the supervisor. She probably holds an even greater grudge against you now,” Wen Yimeng said, unable to help but sigh. “I wonder what the supervisor said to her.”
“What she said to her is not important. She’s in Class 2 anyway, and after the military training ends, there probably won’t be any further involvement,” Wen Yunqing was unconcerned. Yu Man was just an ordinary person, and her so-called background was insignificant in Wen Yunqing’s eyes.
“After the movie, do you want to go have some milk tea?” Wen Yunqing asked.
Wen Yimeng was curious. “Sure, but where would we get milk tea here? The only place to buy things only has mineral water, not even a single soft drink.”
Wen Yunqing smiled. “It’s part of the perks from the business trip. I helped the Special Affairs Department solve a headache of a case, so I naturally earned some compensation.”
“Is the compensation a cup of milk tea?” Wen Yimeng grew even more curious, starting to let her imagination run wild. “Would the people from the Special Affairs Department drive here just to deliver milk tea to you? That seems a bit too high-profile.”
“…” Wen Yunqing hesitated. “Not exactly. I had Lu Zhiming arrange a small refrigerator in her dorm. When the movie is over, we’ll go to her place for milk tea.”
“Oh, that’s how it is.” Wen Yimeng quickly forgot her somewhat outlandish guess. “Then, could we trouble Instructor Lu to prepare some fruit as well? I also want juice.”
“No problem.” Wen Yunqing took out her phone and began texting Lu Zhiming.
“Report, Instructor! Someone here is playing with their phone while watching the movie!” Yu Man suddenly shouted loudly, immediately attracting the attention of many people.
Wen Yunqing paused her texting, slightly surprised that her actions were reported. After all, the instructor wasn’t nearby during the film viewing, and many students had pulled out their phones, dimmed the screens, and were secretly playing with them.
The instructor, hearing the report, also felt a headache coming on. Evening time was tacitly allowed rest time. Although they were told to watch the film seriously, they had all agreed to turn a blind eye to phones last night.
“Who is playing with their phone?” Since someone reported it, the instructor had to come and deal with it.
Yu Man stood up and pointed directly at Wen Yunqing. “It’s her! She not only changed seats without permission but also played with her phone and chatted, not watching the movie seriously at all. Instructor, shouldn’t this behavior be considered an incorrect attitude?”
Seeing that Yu Man was pointing at Wen Yunqing, the instructor fell into a brief silence. The instructor knew that Wen Yunqing was an official staff member. Furthermore, Wen Yunqing held a rank equivalent to a Director-level Official (Zhèng Chùjí). If strictly calculated, his own rank was lower than hers.
After all, a Director-level Official corresponds to a Full Colonel (Zhèng Tuánjí) in the military, which nominally corresponds to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. According to regulations, he was only a First Lieutenant, and he had no right to criticize her.
“Student Wen, if you have something important to attend to, you don’t have to remain here,” the instructor’s attitude was excellent, speaking in a consultative tone. “According to the rules, silence must be maintained during the film viewing. I hope you can understand.”
Wen Yunqing nodded, taking Wen Yimeng’s hand and standing up. “I understand. Then I’ll take her out first, to avoid disturbing certain people.”
“Excellent. Thank you for your cooperation, Student Wen,” the instructor said with a smile, ignoring Yu Man’s stunned and angry gaze, and even thoughtfully pushed the door open for the two of them.
“Holy cow, that is so cool! Our roommate seems really awesome,” Liang Shiyou felt she was gaining experience today. This must be the first student who could be treated this way by an instructor.
Zhang Pan on the side also nodded in agreement. “Student Wen must be a very capable person, which is why the instructor respects her.”
The thoughts of most people in the company were similar to those of Liang Shiyou and Zhang Pan. They believed Wen Yunqing was a hidden powerhouse, and only a fool would try to offend someone like that. Smart people would want to maintain a friendly relationship with her.
At the very least, they should not offend her and must maintain a peaceful coexistence.
“Yu Man must be even angrier now,” Wen Yimeng sighed. “I guess this feud is completely set. I wonder if she’ll do something extreme.”
“Never mind her. Since we’re out, let’s go to Lu Zhiming’s place ourselves,” Wen Yunqing genuinely didn’t take Yu Man seriously. Holding her girlfriend’s hand, she strolled leisurely along the path.
It was already early autumn in September, so the temperature difference between day and night was quite large. It was about 30°C when the sun was out during the day, but by night, the wind carried a hint of coolness.
They hadn’t walked two steps when Wen Yunqing suddenly stopped, nudged Wen Yimeng’s arm, and tilted her head to the left, signaling her to look that way.
“Is that Instructor Lu? Is she with someone?” Wen Yimeng’s vision wasn’t as good as Wen Yunqing’s; she could only see a blurred silhouette.
Wen Yunqing nodded. “Should we go take a look?”
Wen Yimeng’s curiosity was immediately piqued. After symbolically thinking about it, she nodded in agreement.
Lu Zhiming had no idea that Wen Yunqing and Wen Yimeng were stealthily approaching just to eavesdrop. She was still organizing her thoughts, trying to figure out how to express her feelings tactfully yet sincerely.
“Of course, besides completing the mission, I also have selfish motives. I think you are a wonderful person,” Lu Zhiming stammered.
Darn it, this confession is harder than fighting a demon or ghost! Could I choose to blast a malevolent ghost to smithereens in exchange for a successful confession?
Zhou Jun remained silent for about a minute, then opened her mouth, looking confused. “Instructor Lu, I’m very happy to receive such praise from you, but I’m not sure what exactly it is about me that attracted you?”
“I’m actually not entirely sure either, but I think you are very pleasing to my eye?” Lu Zhiming had no experience with confessions and hadn’t even met Zhou Jun that many times. She could only stumble through articulating her thoughts.
“Anyway, I really like seeing you, and I really like being by your side.” Lu Zhiming’s choice of words was direct and simple. “If possible, I think kissing you would also be a good experience.”
Zhou Jun, who had appeared quite calm initially, completely lost her composure upon hearing the word “kissing.” Her face flushed instantly.
Of course, a casual person like Wen Yimeng couldn’t detect Zhou Jun’s blush due to the darkness of the night. But for practitioners like Wen Yunqing and Lu Zhiming, it was different; it became exceptionally obvious to their eyes.
Seeing Zhou Jun’s reaction, Lu Zhiming’s first thought was that she had a chance, and she continued, “Do you mind the fact that I like you?”
Zhou Jun blushed, and her voice became hesitant. “Instructor Lu, this… this I don’t know. I haven’t been in a relationship… I… I just think you are a very good instructor.”
“But I am no longer your instructor now,” Lu Zhiming said, then added, “At most, I’m a teaching assistant. Jing University has no rule prohibiting students from dating teaching assistants. I am twenty-six years old now. I should still be within your acceptable dating age, right?”
Thinking that Zhou Jun was not yet nineteen, Lu Zhiming added, “Don’t worry. We practitioners don’t age quickly. By the time you are twenty-six, I should still look about the same as I do now.”
Tsk, tsk, tsk. Wen Yunqing couldn’t help but worry for Lu Zhiming. Lu Zhiming really was awkward with words.
“Instructor Lu, I don’t mind the age. I just feel that…” Zhou Jun’s expression was also complicated. “Instructor Lu, I don’t mind your age. I just feel that we don’t seem to have much interaction, and I’m not a particularly outstanding person.”
“What does that matter? If the person you like has to be outstanding, then the professors at Jing University should be the most popular, right?” Lu Zhiming retorted. “Zhou Jun, don’t forget you were the provincial top scorer. If you don’t think you’re outstanding, where does that leave all the other candidates in your province?”
“…” Zhou Jun quickly calmed down, and her face was less red. “I understand your point, Instructor Lu, but I worked hard to become the provincial top scorer, and I still want to prioritize my studies. The matter of dating…”
“Dating won’t affect your studies at all. I also graduated from Jing University with a Physics major. If you date me, I can teach you many things, which will be very helpful for improving your abilities,” Lu Zhiming blocked Zhou Jun’s excuse directly.
“If you want to refuse me because of some external pressure, you can tell me, and I will take care of them,” Lu Zhiming’s attitude was very serious. “Of course, I’m not forcing you to agree. If you genuinely don’t like me, you can reject me.”
“Instructor Lu, I…” Zhou Jun wanted to say that she didn’t like Lu Zhiming, but when the words reached her throat, she couldn’t utter them.
“If you don’t say anything, I’ll take that as consent?” Lu Zhiming wasn’t good at reading the atmosphere, but her intuition told her that Zhou Jun also had feelings for her, and she was certainly tempted by the confession.
“Instructor Lu, can I have some time to consider? I need to think carefully,” Zhou Jun couldn’t bring herself to say she didn’t like Lu Zhiming, but she also couldn’t agree to the confession right now.
Lu Zhiming nodded. “Of course you can, but how many days is ‘some time’?”
Zhou Jun looked down in thought. “Could I give you the answer after military training ends?”
“Okay, it’s a deal.” Lu Zhiming quickly agreed.
Taking advantage of the moment before Lu Zhiming noticed them, Wen Yunqing quietly led Wen Yimeng backward, then casually returned to the original path and continued walking leisurely toward the instructor’s dorm.
“Yunqing, do practitioners really not age?” Wen Yimeng asked. “Then will you still look like this when I’m old?”
Wen Yunqing raised an eyebrow. “Haven’t we discussed this issue before? I will grow old with you. Besides, you are also cultivating now. If I won’t age, neither will you.”
Wen Yimeng touched her own face. “Will I still look like this when I’m thirty?”
Wen Yunqing also touched Wen Yimeng’s face. “If we both cultivate, by the time you are forty, Yimeng, you should still look around twenty-five or twenty-six, and your body will be maintained in its optimal state.”
Wen Yimeng pulled her hand back, and also took Wen Yunqing’s hand away. “Is that true? Then will we still look twenty-five or twenty-six when we are sixty?”
“It’s possible.” Wen Yunqing wasn’t discouraged. Taking advantage of Wen Yimeng’s inattention, she quickly kissed her on the corner of her mouth. Since she couldn’t use her hands, she would use her mouth; it was almost the same.
Wen Yimeng raised an eyebrow, let go of Wen Yunqing’s hand, and instead wrapped her arms around her neck, pulling slightly. “What were you just doing?”
Wen Yunqing cooperatively lowered her head, face-to-face with her girlfriend. “Do you want to kiss me?”
“…” She guessed it? Wen Yimeng’s boldness leaked away a little. Then, she used her other hand to loop around Wen Yunqing’s neck and quickly gave her a fleeting kiss.
Sure enough, imagination is beautiful, but reality is cruel. I’m still not bold enough!
