- Chapter 46 - The College Entrance Exam is Coming!
After the rescued individuals were sent to the ambulance, the fire brigade chief approached Wen Yunqing. He began with sincere thanks, then switched to lecturing mode, repeatedly emphasizing safety issues while delivering a public legal education to Wen Yunqing.
“Young comrade, you haven’t even obtained a driver’s license! How can you take such a dangerous action under these circumstances!”
“Even if you are rushing to save people, you must act within your capabilities! Professional tasks should be left to professionals!”
“In this incident, we also bear some responsibility, so we will temporarily overlook your unauthorized driving and trespassing into the fire zone! However, after you return, you must write a one-thousand-word self-criticism, deeply reflecting on this matter!”
Wen Yunqing remained silent throughout. Only after the Chief had been talking non-stop for nearly half an hour did she raise her hand. “Chief, may I say a couple of things?”
“Go ahead,” the Chief agreed, taking a bottle of mineral water from a team member and drinking a couple of mouthfuls. He had genuinely talked himself hoarse.
“I suggest reporting this to the police. I suspect this was arson, specifically a husband attempting to murder his wife and children,” Wen Yunqing said, then quickly pulled Wen Yimeng back a step.
“Pfft, cough, cough, cough.” The Chief couldn’t hold back and sprayed the water from his mouth. “What did you say? Arson? Murder?”
“I’m not joking. Wouldn’t it be better to control the suspect first?” Wen Yunqing said, looking toward the man standing nearby, whose face had instantly changed color.
“What nonsense are you talking about? I didn’t start the fire! I was outside when it started!” the man explained nervously. “Didn’t you all see? When I called for someone to open the lock, the fire hadn’t even started yet!”
“Is that so?” Wen Yunqing raised an eyebrow. “You said you stepped out to throw trash, so you didn’t have your key, and the lock just happened to break, correct?”
“That’s right. As soon as I realized I couldn’t get back in, I went to find a locksmith,” the man said. He didn’t see any issue with this logic.
“But your outfit—a suit and leather shoes—doesn’t look at all like someone who just stepped out to throw trash,” Wen Yunqing pointed out. “I looked at the floor plan. Throwing trash means just stepping out the door and turning a corner, which takes barely a minute. Who would put on shoes and socks in that situation?”
“I observed as I was leaving that there were slippers placed in the entrance area of your home,” Wen Yunqing added.
The man frowned, but quickly found a countermeasure. “I had just arrived home and hadn’t had time to change my shoes when my wife asked me to take out the trash. I didn’t know things would turn out to be such a coincidence!”
“Oh,” Wen Yunqing reacted plainly. “Then let’s wait until your wife wakes up before we talk again.”
“Wakes up?” The man was stunned. The story he fabricated was based on the premise that there would be no witnesses! How could someone possibly wake up?!
The fire brigade chief also noticed the suspicious activity at this point. Using the pretense of investigating the cause of the fire, he instructed his team to detain the man and simultaneously contacted the nearest police station to explain the situation.
The moment the Chief hung up the phone, a few police officers arrived, accompanied by two people.
“You respond that quickly?” The fire chief was rarely surprised.
“I received a call twenty minutes ago reporting someone driving a fire truck and crashing into their vehicles. We were just surveying the scene with traffic police comrades,” the officer said. “Headquarters asked me to come over and check the situation first. Where is the person you mentioned?”
“That’s him. He is the owner of the apartment and the husband of the victim,” the fire chief said. After leaving two people with the police to investigate the cause of the fire, most of the firefighters returned to the station.
The police quickly took the man into custody. After asking Wen Yunqing a few simple questions, they let the two girls head home.
“Officer, what will happen to the damaged vehicles at the entrance?” Wen Yimeng asked.
“The owners parked illegally, obstructing the rescue operation to some extent. The specific handling needs to be coordinated by various departments,” the officer said, pausing with a slight smile. “Don’t worry, you two won’t be held responsible for this. But next time, please don’t be so impulsive. Saving people is right, but you must also prioritize your own safety.”
The officer had just learned about Wen Yunqing’s brave deeds and did not intend to let two young girls under the age of twenty bear any responsibility.
The fire department would step forward to negotiate with the car owners. If they were uncooperative, at most the fire department would offer a token amount of compensation, and then the traffic police would penalize the two car owners, effectively fining back the compensation money.
Wen Yunqing did not interfere with the subsequent handling. She carried the box full of copper coins in one hand and held Wen Yimeng’s hand with the other, heading back home.
What Wen Yunqing didn’t know was that shortly after she left, information concerning her was bundled and sent to the criminal investigation team, quickly landing on Shen Ling’s desk.
Shen Ling rubbed her temples with a headache as she looked at the file in her hand. Wen Yunqing was undoubtedly a person with special abilities. However, her actions and way of thinking also seemed somewhat extreme. Although her starting points were good, she didn’t conform to the rules.
She was essentially a wild, renegade version of Lu Zhiming—no, she was someone whose destructive potential was even greater than the wild Lu Zhiming.
After reviewing the file three times, Shen Ling still couldn’t think of a good solution. She simply scanned a copy and sent it to Lu Zhiming, leaving the headache to her.
Wen Yunqing didn’t pay much attention to the fire incident. It wasn’t until after her college entrance examination was over that she received a call, completed the interview procedure, and learned that the man had been criminally detained.
Of course, those events happened later. After enjoying a rare three-day vacation, Wen Yunqing didn’t even have time to teach Wen Yimeng how to draw talismans before returning to the intense study routine.
As time passed, the countdown clock for the college entrance exam hanging next to the blackboard went from eleven days to five days, and then finally to the last day.
“Students, tomorrow is the College Entrance Exam. Do not stay up late tonight to study. Try to go to bed early and get enough rest!” The Chinese language teacher, acting as the homeroom teacher, was much more responsible than the previous Mr. Lou Youpeng. Even though only half the students here cared about the exam results, she put in 120 percent of her effort to create a study atmosphere and tirelessly tried to boost the students’ scores.
The students in Class One, in turn, highly respected the Chinese teacher and diligently took note of her instructions.
After saying what needed to be said, the Chinese teacher began distributing the admission tickets. She meticulously prepared a transparent pouch for everyone.
“Zhou Juan, have you prepared all your examination tools?” As the person with high expectations, Zhou Juan received special attention from the teacher.
Zhou Juan nodded. “Everything is ready.”
“Good. Don’t oversleep tomorrow. I will be in the office these few days. You can come find me if you have any issues.”
“Yes, thank you, teacher.”
After looking out for Zhou Juan, the teacher walked over to Wen Yunqing. “Student Wen, the first subject tomorrow is Chinese. For the modern text, answer according to the template I taught you. The essay is usually argumentative. Write it following a positive-negative discussion structure, with a total-division-total outline. Don’t stray from the topic—aim for stability!”
“The College Entrance Exam essay cannot include real people or real events. You must be careful,” the Chinese teacher couldn’t help but add a few more words, recalling Wen Yunqing’s previous essays. She didn’t want a promising student to lose points on the essay.
Wen Yunqing appeared very well-behaved, nodding in agreement to every point and committing them to memory.
The College Entrance Exam was a crucial turning point in life, and the Wen family took it seriously. A month ago, they started formulating a meal plan to ensure both Wen Yunqing and Wen Yimeng maintained the best possible condition for the examination.
Father Wen also took time off work, intending to serve as their personal driver during the exam days, personally taking them to school.
Lying in bed, Wen Yimeng felt a surge of tension thinking about the exam tomorrow. She continuously confirmed in her mind that the examination tools were ready, that she had reviewed everything she needed to, and that all the current affairs materials were memorized.
Wen Yunqing, lying next to her, turned over and, finding Wen Yimeng still awake, reached out and covered her eyes. “It’s already ten o’clock. Close your eyes and go to sleep.”
“I’m nervous. Will there be any accidents during tomorrow’s exam?”
“Didn’t I give you a lucky charm? Keep it close to you, and no accidents will happen.”
“Can this raise my score?”
“Hmm, maybe, but I haven’t tried it. In any case, if you wear this, there won’t be any accidents like filling in the wrong admission ticket number or forgetting your eraser.”
“Yunqing, can I get into Jing University?”
“Of course. We both can,” Wen Yunqing said, gathering her spiritual energy into her hand and gently patting Wen Yimeng’s back.
The thoughts in Wen Yimeng’s mind gradually dispersed, and her body quickly relaxed. In less than three minutes, she drifted into a deep sleep.
That night, many people, like Wen Yimeng, slept soundly, while quite a few tossed and turned, unable to sleep. A very small number didn’t sleep at all, pulling an all-nighter to study, and then drank a bowl of ginseng soup before heading to the exam the next morning.
“Do your best. See you in two and a half hours.” Before entering the examination hall, Zhou Juan cheered for the two girls.
“Mhm, good luck.” Having slept well, Wen Yimeng was in excellent condition. Now that the actual exam was about to start, she wasn’t nervous at all.
“Then I wish us three the top three ranks in the city,” Wen Yunqing said with a smile. Her gaze inadvertently swept across Zhou Juan’s neck, where she noticed a red string from which hung a ping’an kou (safety clasp) with a diameter of about three centimeters.
“Zhou Juan, since when did you take a liking to ping’an kou?” Wen Yunqing raised an eyebrow slightly. If she wasn’t mistaken, this safety clasp should have been nourished with spiritual energy, possessing the effect of calming the mind and stabilizing the spirit.
“This? This was lent to me by Teacher Lu,” Zhou Juan looked down at the safety clasp and said with a smile. “Teacher Lu said she was wearing this when she was admitted to the Physics Department of Jing University.”
