- Chapter 113 - Extortion Attempt (Car Crash Scam)
As a poverty-stricken county, Dong County’s geographical location was even more remote than Wen’s grandmother’s place. The four students had no choice but to fly to the provincial capital and then transfer to a train.
They were originally planning to take a county bus, but Wen Yunqing felt the conditions inside were worrying. To facilitate movement, she directly rented a well-performing jeep from a local rental agency and drove for two hours to reach the neighboring Dong County.
As a genuinely poor county, apart from the relatively decent buildings near the municipal government, most other areas in Dong County primarily consisted of three-to-five-story walk-up buildings. If you saw a building with more stories, you would definitely see many banners hanging on it, advertising ultra-low prices, averaging less than 100,000 RMB for an apartment of 100 square meters.
“The county town here is not as bustling as the small town near us,” Liang Shiyou said from the back seat, looking up at the surrounding environment. Arriving in the county town around 4 PM, the four decided not to drive deeper and chose a place to stop.
Zhang Pan quickly got out, commenting, “It’s about the same as the small town near my home.” Although her family wasn’t wealthy, her place of origin was not considered impoverished; at least the public resources were decent.
“But the air here is clearly much better. I wonder if we can see stars tonight,” Wen Yimeng took a deep breath, very satisfied with the air quality. “If there are stars, perhaps we could retire here?”
“Didn’t you say you wanted to retire somewhere by the sea?” Wen Yunqing raised an eyebrow. “Why the sudden change of heart?”
“We can live by the seaside for a few days, and then come here for a few days!” Wen Yimeng wrinkled her nose, nudging her girlfriend with her elbow. “Is that not allowed?”
“Allowed, allowed. It’s just that transportation isn’t very convenient,” Wen Yunqing conceded; she regretted speaking up.
Wen Yimeng scoffed softly. “When we’re old, that’s decades away. Maybe this place will have become a developed area by then.”
Wen Yunqing nodded in agreement. At this moment, she should keep silent and not argue about what the environment would look like after development.
Zhang Pan and Liang Shiyou exchanged a glance. They both instinctively swallowed. A couple deeply in love! Everything they say sounds like they’re flaunting their affection!
To be fair, the environment in Dong County was indeed good. Due to its hilly terrain, it was practically surrounded by mountains. Large factories were almost nonexistent here, and even the river water was exceptionally clear.
However, there was a downside: electric vehicles were extremely numerous, especially after 5 PM. Commuters mixed with parents picking up children from school, and many drove their scooters onto the motorized vehicle lanes, requiring Wen Yunqing to be extra cautious while driving.
“The people here don’t seem to follow traffic laws very well. Electric scooters are not allowed on motorized vehicle lanes,” Liang Shiyou took out her phone, taking photos and typing notes into her memo app.
“They’re not wearing helmets, and most scooters have umbrellas or windshields installed on them,” Zhang Pan added from the side. “They are also illegally carrying passengers; those sitting on the back are usually over twelve years old.”
“Someone is putting a child in the front and also carrying an adult in the back!” Wen Yimeng sounded surprised. “Having someone in the front should affect the steering, right? That’s far too unsafe!”
Wen Yunqing glanced at the rearview mirror. Several scooters were following her car. “There are also a few riders who look like minors. They’re treating these electric scooters like motorcycles.”
“I think we don’t need to drive deep into the townships for our research topic. Just staking out on the main road for a day should be enough to collect sufficient data,” Liang Shiyou said, immediately turning on her camera recording function.
There were many electric scooters in Jing City too, given the traffic situation; sometimes, riding a scooter to work was more comfortable than driving. But Jing City was the capital, and despite the traffic jams, the riders’ discipline was very high. They strictly followed the latest regulations, and there was absolutely no situation where people rode without helmets and zipped around recklessly.
Because she was passing a school, Wen Yunqing drove even slower. She preferred to stop and wait a bit longer than to compete with middle school students for road space.
But events always unfold unexpectedly. Just as Wen Yunqing was moving slowly, an electric scooter suddenly darted out from nowhere, wobbling and crashing into the front headlight of the car. The rider, who wasn’t wearing a helmet, used the momentum to fall to the ground.
“He’s been hit! He’s been hit!” Someone started shouting, and a crowd of onlookers immediately surrounded Wen Yunqing’s car.
Wen Yunqing raised an eyebrow, unbuckled her seatbelt, and got out. She looked calmly at the person shouting the loudest. “My car barely moved. He crashed into me. So, please stop spreading incorrect information.”
The person addressed looked barely of age, wearing a long-sleeved shirt printed with a skull, and sporting messy yellow hair—he looked exactly like a small-time hoodlum wandering the streets.
“How am I lying? Your car was clearly moving just now, which is why you hit him!” The yellow-haired youth retorted stubbornly.
At this point, the person lying on the ground also began to groan. “My head hurts so bad! My waist hurts too, and my leg seems broken! I’m in agony…”
Wen Yunqing ignored the person on the ground, calmly took out her phone to call the police, and then called an ambulance (120).
Seeing that Wen Yunqing wasn’t paying him any attention, the young man attempting the scam steeled himself. Taking advantage of the onlookers’ distraction, he deliberately banged his head against the ground, instantly raising a large lump.
He had scouted the location. Although it was near a school, the surveillance cameras were broken. He had a strategy for choosing his target: pick a car that looked somewhat upscale but didn’t have a dashcam. The owners of such cars would ultimately choose to settle privately.
Even though Wen Yunqing called the police, the young man was still very calm. If they sent him to the hospital, he would just complain about a headache. If they wanted to run tests, he’d go to the bathroom first, then spin around a few times in place to interfere with the test results to a certain extent.
Because they were near a school, the traffic police arrived quickly. Seeing the person lying on the ground, they instinctively frowned. “What’s the situation here? Did the car hit the person, or did the person hit the car?”
“I’m in so much pain! My head hurts so bad!” Before Wen Yunqing could answer, the young man started wailing. Presumably, he hit himself hard earlier, as a very noticeable lump on his head was visibly starting to swell and change color.
“I’ve already called an ambulance; it should be here shortly,” Wen Yunqing said calmly. “I am absolutely certain that my speed did not exceed 5 kilometers per hour. He deliberately crashed into me as an extortion attempt.”
“Nonsense! What proof do you have? Your car clearly turned suddenly and scared me, which is why I steered erratically!” The young man was not a first-timer. He knew how to manage his words, knowing that a mix of truth and lies was the best approach.
“What a coincidence. I’ve been recording video this whole time. I should have captured something,” Liang Shiyou spoke up from the side, drawing attention to herself.
The traffic police’s frown eased slightly. “Is it convenient for you to provide the video?”
Liang Shiyou naturally agreed, thoughtfully rewinding the video to the crucial moment. “From the video, our car was moving very slowly, and we were driving in our own lane. He actively crashed into us in an attempt at extortion.”
“Lies! You guys scared me! Otherwise, I wouldn’t have accidentally crashed into you!” The young man continued to argue.
The video only showed the young man riding over, but the most critical segment was not captured, making it difficult for the traffic police to make a definitive judgment. They could only question the surrounding people.
There were many onlookers, but very few were willing to clearly state their position. Most said they thought they saw something but weren’t quite sure, generally being vague. Only the yellow-haired youth from the beginning spoke with firm certainty, saying he saw Wen Yunqing intending to turn, and the young man was scared, so it was not an extortion attempt.
Before the traffic police could question further, the ambulance arrived. They could only send the young man to the hospital for examination first and wait for the results.
As for Wen Yunqing’s side, although the traffic police knew what was likely going on, they still followed procedure, impounding the car first and asking the students to cooperate with the investigation.
