I Fall Every Time I Meet an Alpha [Transmigrated into a Book] - Chapter 58
“Do you know who’s standing behind them?” Meng Yuqing posed another question.
“Who?” Meng Yuzhou looked at her.
“Gan Qingyun.”
At the sound of that name, the fog in Meng Yuzhou’s mind suddenly cleared. So, the root of the problem still lay here.
“They were all acting on Gan Qingyun’s orders.” Meng Yuqing curled her lips mockingly. “As for why Gan Qingyun gave those orders, I’m sure you understand perfectly well.”
“Yes,” Meng Yuzhou said with a hint of self-reproach, “It’s all because of me.”
“Good that you know.” Meng Yuqing stood up, glancing at his swollen, pig-like face, and refrained from further comment. “I’m leaving. Get some rest.”
Meng Yuzhou watched as his sister turned and left his room, his mood sinking lower and lower.
He felt like a man adrift in the depths of the ocean, suffocating, lifeless, overwhelmed by the oppressive weight of the water. Closing his eyes, he was swept away by the whirlpool of the deep.
The next day.
Meng Xijun called the school to inquire about Meng Yuzhou’s fight. He tactfully explained that he couldn’t make it to the school and left the matter to their discretion.
Xie Baojun, the other party involved in the fight, was in a similar situation his parents didn’t care enough to show up either.
Meng Yuzhou encountered Xie Baojun in the administrative office. Though the tension between them remained sharp, neither had any reason to throw punches again.
The homeroom teachers of Class (1) and Class (2) had a cordial discussion and conducted a thorough reprimand. In the end, Meng Yuzhou and Xie Baojun reached a reconciliation. Since it was their first offense, the school decided against a formal disciplinary record, opting instead to have each of them write an 800-word self-criticism. They would then read it aloud during the Monday flag-raising ceremony in front of the entire school.
Though the two had ostensibly made peace in the office, the moment they stepped out, their hostility flared again.
Xie Baojun snarled, “You spineless coward, just you wait.”
Meng Yuzhou gritted his teeth but managed a civil reply, “Fine. I’ll be waiting.”
With that, they parted ways on bitter terms.
When Meng Yuzhou returned to the classroom, all eyes were on him. He had never been the impulsive type, always mild-mannered, so no one could have imagined him getting into a fight.
Once again, the Meng siblings found themselves at the center of gossip, becoming the school’s hot topic.
Many believed Meng Yuzhou’s behavior was a direct result of having such a sister.
Insiders revealed that Meng Yuzhou had only fought because of his sister’s influence and that Meng Yuqing had also thrown punches. Yet, only Meng Yuzhou had been summoned. It was clear he had taken full responsibility for the incident. With some embellishment from certain parties,
a narrative emerged: a noble, long-suffering hero forced to step forward, sacrificing himself under the tyranny of his sister.
The way people looked at Meng Yuzhou shifted instantly.
Zhong Xiaoxiao, seeing Meng Yuzhou’s swollen face, initially felt guilty, thinking she had dragged him into this. But then it struck her, why should she feel guilty? Didn’t he deserve it? Ugh, what a scumbag.
The thought that Gan Qingyun had hired people to beat him up gave Zhong Xiaoxiao an inexplicable thrill. If every girl who got dumped had this kind of spine, scumbags would go extinct.
Meng Yuqing heard Zhong Xiaoxiao’s inner thoughts and couldn’t help curling her lips. The little beauty’s ideas were truly unique and different from others. As expected of her Xiaoxiao.
Meng Yuqing stretched out her foot and tapped the underside of Zhong Xiaoxiao’s chair with her toes. Feeling this, Zhong Xiaoxiao immediately turned around as if offended, glaring at her and mouthing, “What are you doing?”
“Treat me to something~” Meng Yuqing mouthed back.
“…” She still remembers that? Zhong Xiaoxiao was speechless.
Since she was treating Meng Yuqing, shouldn’t she also treat Meng Yuzhou? After all, the siblings had helped her out of a tight spot.
Thinking this, Zhong Xiaoxiao took out two lollipops from her bag. She gave one to Meng Yuqing, “Here, for you.”
The other she gave to Meng Yuzhou, “Are you okay?”
Seeing the offered lollipop, Meng Yuzhou’s tense expression softened slightly. “I’m fine,” he said, taking the lollipop but not eating it, just holding it in his hand.
The system, seeing the plot finally making some breakthrough progress, felt much better: This is it. The male and female leads have finally broken up and gotten back together again.
Meng Yuqing unwrapped her lollipop and put it in her mouth, ignoring the system’s nagging.
Seeing Meng Yuqing’s lack of reaction, the system recalled that it might have been a bit harsh on her recently. It was always a system that clearly distinguished rewards from punishments. So it began trying to win Meng Yuqing over with points again.
System 666: Meng Yuqing, as long as you keep doing missions, I’ll return your points to you.
Meng Yuqing: Oh.
System 666: Don’t you want to go back to your original world?
Meng Yuqing: I do. But what’s the use of wanting?
System 666: Work hard on your missions.
Meng Yuqing: Aren’t I doing them?
“Meng Yuqing, who gave you permission to eat a lollipop in class?” The teacher’s stern voice suddenly rang out, and the eyes of the entire class instantly focused on Meng Yuqing.
Snapping out of her telepathic conversation with the system, Meng Yuqing looked at the somewhat severe teacher on the podium, unfazed.
“Go stand outside as punishment.” The subject teacher knew this was a problematic student, but being silently challenged like this made it hard for her to back down.
“Teacher, I was the one who gave her the lollipop,” Zhong Xiaoxiao suddenly raised her hand and replied.
“You go stand outside with her!” the teacher gritted her teeth and said.
“Oh,” Zhong Xiaoxiao silently lowered her hand, got up from her seat, and walked out.
Seeing this, Meng Yuqing thought being punished to stand outside wasn’t so bad after all. She got up and followed.
The class continued inside while they stood outside as punishment.
Meng Yuqing had the lollipop in her mouth as she stood beside Zhong Xiaoxiao, leaning lazily against the wall behind her like she had no bones.
Zhong Xiaoxiao didn’t mind standing outside that much. If possible, she’d rather be out here. The atmosphere inside the classroom always felt oppressive to her.
Noticing Zhong Xiaoxiao’s empty little hand, Meng Yuqing reached over and took it. Zhong Xiaoxiao turned to look at her and mouthed, “What are you doing?”
“I’m cold~” Meng Yuqing said around the lollipop.
“…” Zhong Xiaoxiao was speechless and pulled her hand away. The person standing next to her was an Alpha, and she hadn’t forgotten that.
“What’s wrong with me being an Alpha?” Meng Yuqing took the lollipop out of her mouth and leaned in to whisper by her ear, “Can an Alpha eat you up?”
“Yes.” Zhong Xiaoxiao glared at her and pushed her away. “Stay away from me.”
Meng Yuqing raised an eyebrow, looking indifferent. She straightened up, popped the lollipop into her mouth, and the two of them stood there silently, gazing at the sky outside.
A dark cloud drifted over the horizon, and soon rain began to fall.
The rain mingled with mist, turning the outside world into a vast white expanse that completely obscured the desolate scenery of the school.
The heavy rain blew onto the balcony, soaking the security bars and the row of chrysanthemums planted along the edge.
Autumn was nearly over, and the chrysanthemums had already withered.
Seeing how time had passed through the flowers, Zhong Xiaoxiao suddenly remembered, she still hadn’t found her phone! Because of the Heat period, she hadn’t had time to think about it. Now that the Heat period was over.
Her phone was still missing!
“Um, Meng Yuqing,” Zhong Xiaoxiao turned to her and asked softly, “Did you find any leads on the phone I asked you to help me look for?”
Meng Yuqing shook her head. “How about I just buy you a new one?”
“It’s not about replacing it,” Zhong Xiaoxiao thought. That phone was one-of-a-kind, her only way back!
That phone was her only way back? Meng Yuqing overheard Zhong Xiaoxiao’s thoughts, a question mark forming in her mind. She nearly blurted out asking where she came from, but swallowed the words at the last moment.
What was the point of asking? Meng Yuqing guessed they might be from the same place, but the time gap was unknown. It could be decades or even centuries between them.
Meng Yuqing asked the system: You must know where the female lead is from, right? Don’t lie to me.
System 666: Didn’t I already say it? Right now, she is the female lead. Digging into her origins is meaningless.
Meng Yuqing: Even if it’s meaningless, you could still tell me.
System 666: Knowing won’t change anything.
Meng Yuqing: This is meaningless, that’s meaningless then what does have meaning?
System 666: Making the male and female leads follow the plot is what matters.
Meng Yuqing: Why does it have to be this way? Forcing two people with no feelings for each other together. My brother liked the original female lead, not the current one. And the current female lead has no feelings for him, you know that perfectly well. What’s the point of this world’s existence? Don’t you think it’s absurd and ridiculous?
System 666: Ugh, just do what you’re told. Why overthink it? If you’re told to push them together, then push them together. Even if it’s absurd and ridiculous, it’s not our place to question. I’m just following orders.
Meng Yuqing thought, right, pressing the system was pointless. It was just an AI, and she was just a pawn, two sides of the same coin.
Might as well accept being a chess piece on the board. Chess pieces shouldn’t have their own thoughts. They just need to be moved where they’re needed.
Still, after a moment, Meng Yuqing asked the system again: If the female lead doesn’t like the male lead, how can my efforts make a difference? Can you at least tell me her age? Is she a high school student?
System 666: No. I think she’s, 26.
Heh, no wonder. Meng Yuqing couldn’t help but sneer at the system’s words. A 26-year-old grown woman would never fall for a high schooler. No wonder nothing worked.
Zhong Xiaoxiao turned and saw Meng Yuqing grinning at her inexplicably, nearly jumping out of her skin. “Wh-what are you doing?” Why was she smiling like that? This Meng girl must have something wrong with her! Zhong Xiaoxiao felt uneasy to the point of being creeped out.
She swore that if Meng Yuqing dared to touch her, she would scream and jump up in fright.
Seeing Zhong Xiaoxiao staring at her in alarm, Meng Yuqing softened her expression and returned to normal. She leaned closer and said to Zhong Xiaoxiao, “You look well, really pretty.”
What the hell?? Zhong Xiaoxiao stared at her in confusion.
“Makes me want to kiss you,” Meng Yuqing added, her face inching closer as if she really intended to do it. Zhong Xiaoxiao tensed up defensively, leaning back further and further until she was bent like a bow.
