I Fall Every Time I Meet an Alpha [Transmigrated into a Book] - Chapter 47
When they arrived at Zhong Xiaoxiao’s apartment complex, Meng Yuqing kindly offered to walk her upstairs. Zhong Xiaoxiao didn’t really want her to, but she had a bit of a persecution complex and felt safer with someone accompanying her.
“I’ll take you up,” Meng Yuqing said, adding a verbal threat for good measure. “You’re in your Heat period right now, and there are Alphas lurking everywhere. Aren’t you scared? Hmm?” Meng Yuqing leaned in closer, making Zhong Xiaoxiao feel like she was the most dangerous one of all.
Zhong Xiaoxiao was extremely reluctant, but she had to admit Meng Yuqing was right.
And just like that, Meng Yuqing entered her home. She glanced around and sighed. “It’s been so long since I’ve been here. I’ve missed it.”
The moment they stepped inside, Zhong Xiaoxiao suddenly remembered her mother had forbidden them from seeing each other!
“Meng Yuqing!” Zhong Xiaoxiao suddenly shouted, startling her. Meng Yuqing turned to her. “What’s wrong?”
“You should leave now.” Zhong Xiaoxiao felt a little guilty after scaring her. “My mom doesn’t want us together…”
“But she’s not here right now, is she?” Meng Yuqing took a step closer. Zhong Xiaoxiao glared at her, that was exactly why it was dangerous!
“Just go,” Zhong Xiaoxiao urged, wanting to shove her out the door but hesitating because Meng Yuqing had been kind enough to walk her home.
Meng Yuqing could tell she wasn’t entirely serious about kicking her out, so she stubbornly stayed. “Aren’t you feeling dizzy? What if you faint? I should stay and take care of you.”
“My mom will be back soon.” Zhong Xiaoxiao looked distressed, internally screaming, why was she still arguing? Just kick her out already!
“She’ll be furious if she sees you. Please, just go.” Zhong Xiaoxiao was practically begging now.
“I’m not leaving.” Meng Yuqing walked over and plopped down on the sofa. “I’m thirsty. Get me some water.”
Damn it! Who did she think she was, acting like this was her own home?
Grumbling internally, Zhong Xiaoxiao went to pour her a glass of water. “Drink it and then leave.” She shoved the glass at her impatiently, nearly spilling it.
“Hey, hey, can’t you be a little more careful?” Meng Yuqing took the glass with a frown and took a sip.
“You’ve had your water. Now go.” Zhong Xiaoxiao tried to shoo her away.
“I’ve never seen someone so ungrateful,” Meng Yuqing said, feigning disapproval. “I wonder who it was that helped someone through the toughest part of their Heat earlier. And now that they’re fine, they’re turning their back on me.”
“…”
This was exactly why you should never owe someone a favor! Anyone with a conscience would feel guilty to death.
But Zhong Xiaoxiao was the type who didn’t care. She stood her ground and argued back. “What about the time you splashed water all over me? Or when you pushed me down the stairs? Or when you fell on top of me and sent me to the hospital? You owe me way more! Consider today your compensation. I forgive you, so just go already.”
“You’re forgiving me that easily?” Meng Yuqing raised an eyebrow.
“You should be happy I’m forgiving you at all!” Be grateful, damn it!
“What if I said I didn’t do any of that on purpose? Would you let me stay and explain to your mom?”
“No. Get out.”
Zhong Xiaoxiao glared at her, unwilling to waste any more words.
Meng Yuqing refused to leave, so Zhong Xiaoxiao tried to pull her up. Meng Yuqing remained seated, watching Xiaoxiao tug at her hand with an amused expression.
The two were at a stalemate when the door suddenly opened. Zhong Yuanyuan had returned from work.
Hearing the noise, both Xiaoxiao and Yuqing turned their heads toward the entrance.
“Xiaoxiao, you’re back?” Yuanyuan’s voice floated over before she even finished changing her shoes in the entryway. Just the sound of her voice made Xiaoxiao tense up immediately.
“Quick! Get up!” Xiaoxiao urged Meng Yuqing frantically. “Go to my room, hurry!”
Propelled by Xiaoxiao’s urgency, Meng Yuqing practically floated into Xiaoxiao’s bedroom.
“Xiaoxiao,” Yuanyuan’s loud voice called out, “who’s visiting?”
“Ah! No one’s here!” Xiaoxiao pushed Meng Yuqing inside and shut the door behind her, then turned to face Yuanyuan as she approached.
“Then whose shoes are those by the door?” Yuanyuan walked over, eyeing Xiaoxiao’s suspicious behavior with growing doubt. “Who’s in your room?”
“No one,” Xiaoxiao insisted, terrified that Yuanyuan would barge in to search. The room was tiny, there was nowhere to hide anyone.
“Let me see.” Yuanyuan moved toward the door.
“Mom, really, there’s no one!” Xiaoxiao, guilty as a thief, blocked the door.
“Move.” Yuanyuan glared at her, displeasure written all over her face. “You’ve got some nerve, bringing someone home and hiding them. If you were going to sneak someone in, at least have the sense to hide their shoes.”
She had a point! Xiaoxiao regretted not hiding the shoes no, actually, she regretted not kicking Meng Yuqing out earlier! Now that Yuanyuan had noticed, she was in for another endless lecture. The kind that would drag on for half a month, with daily reminders ringing in her ears.
She could already predict the scolding: You promised me you wouldn’t interact with Meng Yuqing anymore, and now you’ve brought her into our home? Zhong Xiaoxiao, are you trying to defy me? Huh?!
Yuanyuan pushed Xiaoxiao’s hand aside, but Xiaoxiao clung to her mother’s arm, pleading, “Mom, I swear, no one’s there!”
“Whether someone’s there or not, I’ll find out once I go in.” Yuanyuan looked at Xiaoxiao gripping her hand and, instead of forcing her way in, simply barked, “Let go.”
Xiaoxiao flinched and released her hold, thinking, This is it. If Meng Yuqing gets discovered, who knows what kind of storm I’ll face tonight!
Heavens, I’m doomed!
Meanwhile, Meng Yuqing struck a deal with the system: I’ll trade all my saved-up points for an invisibility cloak.
System 666: Are you sure? My cloaks are expensive. You’ll lose all your accumulated points.
Meng Yuqing had saved up hundreds of thousands of points with the system precisely for emergencies like this.
Meng Yuqing: Yes, hurry up.
The system was more than happy to wipe her points clean partly as petty revenge. Truthfully, if Meng Yuqing had just begged a little, it might have reluctantly helped in other ways like clouding Yuanyuan’s vision so she wouldn’t see her. But since Meng Yuqing insisted on trading points for the cloak, the system gleefully zeroed out her balance. Without points, maybe she’d work harder on missions.
The system retrieved the invisibility cloak from its spatial storage and handed it over. Meng Yuqing draped it over herself and vanished from sight.
Yuanyuan pushed the door open and flicked on the light with a sharp click.
Outside, dusk had fallen, but the room was now brightly illuminated.
Zhong Yuanyuan looked around the room.
She checked the wardrobe first, then under the bed, and even the windowsill, no one was there.
Zhong Xiaoxiao stood outside the door, her heart pounding. She had already braced herself for the scene where her mother would drag Meng Yuqing out of the room and berate her mercilessly.
But after waiting for two minutes, the expected outburst and curses never came. The room remained eerily quiet.
Curious, Zhong Xiaoxiao peeked inside. What was going on? Where could Meng Yuqing be hiding? Her room was only about forty or fifty square meters practically impossible to hide someone in plain sight.
Zhong Yuanyuan walked out, muttering with a puzzled expression, “Where else could she be hiding?”
Seeing that Meng Yuqing hadn’t been dragged out, Zhong Xiaoxiao felt a surge of relief. She didn’t bother thinking about where Meng Yuqing was hiding anymore and preemptively said to her mother, “See? I told you no one was here. I don’t even know what you were looking for.”
“If no one was here, why did you stop me? That just proves you were guilty!” Zhong Yuanyuan, though lacking a valid reason, still found a way to justify herself. “And what about those shoes by the door? Whose are they?”
“Uh…”
That was truly a million-dollar question.
“Whose are they? Why are you hesitating?” Zhong Yuanyuan pressed.
“A… a classmate’s. My shoes broke, so I borrowed a pair to wear home…”
“Then why didn’t you say so earlier?”
“Did you give me a chance?” Zhong Xiaoxiao muttered under her breath, slightly annoyed. “You barged into my room the moment you got home. Anyone would think you were catching someone cheating.”
“What did you say?” Zhong Yuanyuan frowned, displeased by her daughter’s mumbling. “Speak up.”
“Mom, I went into heat!” In a moment of desperation, Zhong Xiaoxiao dropped a bombshell.
The room fell silent for a second.
Zhong Yuanyuan stared at her in disbelief, scrutinizing her from head to toe before growing even more anxious than her daughter. “H-heat? Right now?”
“No, this afternoon…”
“Then how are you feeling now? Are you uncomfortable?” Finally, Zhong Yuanyuan shifted her focus to Zhong Xiaoxiao’s well-being, dropping her aggressive tone.
“I’m fine. The school nurse gave me a Suppressant, and it worked.”
“You should still go to the hospital!”
“Mom, I’m hungry.”
“Alright, alright. I’ll make dinner right away. What do you want to eat?”
“Anything’s fine.”
Zhong Yuanyuan checked the fridge. There were enough ingredients to throw together a simple meal, but now that Zhong Xiaoxiao was in her Heat period, she needed proper nourishment. She couldn’t just make do.
“I’ll go buy some groceries. I’ll be back soon. Stay home, and don’t open the door for anyone, understand?”
“Okay.”
“If you’re hungry, snack on something first.”
“Got it, Mom.”
As Zhong Xiaoxiao responded, she watched her mother leave. She even followed to the door, pressing her ear against it to listen for any movement outside. Finally, she was gone!
Zhong Xiaoxiao dashed back to her room in a hurry and called out in a hushed voice, “Meng Yuqing!”
Meng Yuqing emerged from the invisibility cloak, tossing it back to the system before turning to her. “What’s wrong?”
“Quick, you have to leave!” Zhong Xiaoxiao grabbed her hand and pulled her toward the door. “My mom went to buy groceries, but she’ll be back soon. You need to get out now while you can!”
Meng Yuqing glanced at the small hand gripping hers warm, soft, and oddly comforting.
The corner of her lips curled up unconsciously. Well, there was no need to rush. They had plenty of time ahead.
Zhong Xiaoxiao pulled Meng Yuqing to the doorway and urged her to quickly change her shoes and leave.
Because of these shoes, so much trouble had been stirred up.
Meng Yuqing should just take her shoes and scram!
After putting on her shoes, Meng Yuqing smiled at her before leaving, “Then I’ll come again next time.”
Please don’t. Zhong Xiaoxiao glared at her resentfully, sincerely wishing she would get as far away as possible.
