I Fall Every Time I Meet an Alpha [Transmigrated into a Book] - Chapter 39
“……”
Zhong Xiaoxiao felt she couldn’t keep up the pretense anymore. Meng Yuqing was still staring at her, and she suddenly felt uncomfortably warm all over.
“Gosh, don’t you think it’s a bit hot here?” Zhong Xiaoxiao fanned herself while glancing around. “Is the air conditioning on?”
“It is.” Meng Yuqing looked at her with an amused smile. “Still want to look for your phone?”
“Ah, yes, of course,” Zhong Xiaoxiao realized since her phone couldn’t be reached, she’d have to try another approach. “Could you ask your servants if anyone found my phone? It’s an XX brand, a blue flat smartphone…” She tried her best to describe her phone to Meng Yuqing.
“Alright, I’ll ask later.” Meng Yuqing led her to sit on the sofa. “Stay for dinner before you go back. You can even spend the night…”
“I… I should probably go back.” Zhong Xiaoxiao wasn’t actually willing to leave just yet, but Meng Yuzhou had been glaring at them with a dark expression for quite some time. Zhong Xiaoxiao felt somewhat awkward, she could clearly tell whether someone welcomed her presence or not.
Zhong Xiaoxiao lingered long enough to have dinner. Her attention kept drifting to the busy, orderly servants.
With the Meng parents absent, only three people sat at the dining table.
“What are you looking at? Still thinking about your phone?” Meng Yuqing couldn’t help asking the person across from her.
“Oh, no.” Zhong Xiaoxiao snapped out of her thoughts and denied it.
Meng Yuzhou also looked at her. “It’s getting late. You should head back right after dinner.”
Before Zhong Xiaoxiao could respond, Meng Yuqing spoke up beside her. “What’s the hurry? I’ll take her back later.”
“I’ll do it.” Meng Yuzhou didn’t feel comfortable leaving the two of them alone together and added, “I’ll take her.”
“Fine.” Meng Yuqing smiled at Zhong Xiaoxiao. “The elder sister-in-law should be sent home by the elder brother. Then I won’t see you off.”
I’d rather you take me back, Zhong Xiaoxiao thought to herself. Being alone with Meng Yuzhou made her feel uneasy all over.
“How many times do I have to say it? We’ve broken up!” Meng Yuzhou gritted his teeth, showing signs of anger. “We’re just ordinary classmates now, Meng Yuqing. Can you stop joking about us? Hmm?” He seemed genuinely furious, veins bulging on his forehead and a menacing glint in his eyes, it was somewhat frightening.
Meng Yuqing knew Meng Yuzhou wasn’t in the best state and didn’t want to provoke him further. She relented, “Alright, alright, I won’t joke about you two anymore. No need to get so worked up.”
The table was laden with delicacies, but their foul moods ruined everyone’s appetite.
The Meng siblings ate very little, and Zhong Xiaoxiao, feeling uncomfortable, barely touched her food either.
After dinner, Zhong Xiaoxiao prepared to leave. When Meng Yuzhou insisted on escorting her, she couldn’t help saying, “The driver can take me…”
“I’ll take you.” Meng Yuzhou cut her off. “Let’s go.”
Meng Yuqing walked to the doorway, watching the two figures, one tall, one short walking side by side. They actually looked quite well-matched.
Meng Yuqing: System, you should be satisfied now, right?
The system couldn’t help speaking up: Satisfied with what? There’s been zero progress.
Meng Yuqing: Couples fight all the time. Long separations lead to reunions, and long unions lead to separations. They’ll probably work it out eventually.
Though she said this, Meng Yuqing felt an inexplicable melancholy in her heart that she couldn’t quite explain.
In the car.
Zhong Xiaoxiao sat as far from Meng Yuzhou as possible, and neither spoke a word.
As the “big sister,” Zhong Xiaoxiao shouldn’t be this shy. What’s the big deal? She cleared her throat and asked Meng Yuzhou, “You don’t look well. Haven’t been sleeping properly?”
“Yeah, a bit of insomnia.” When Meng Yuqing wasn’t around, Meng Yuzhou’s expression wasn’t as grim, and he could speak normally.
“You already know about my sister,” Meng Yuzhou said, rubbing his temples wearily. “I want you to stay away from her from now on.”
“I’d love to…” Zhong Xiaoxiao dreamed of staying far away from her, but the author had already bound them together. What power did a created character have to resist their creator?
“She’ll hurt you,” Meng Yuzhou said gravely. “She’s already gone mad. She might seem normal, but inside she’s insane and malicious. There’s no telling when she might do something harmful.”
“I’m not joking. Please believe me.” Meng Yuzhou looked at her, utterly baffled. How could Zhong Xiaoxiao still laugh and chat with the person who had harmed her so badly, acting as if nothing had happened?
“I believe you,” Zhong Xiaoxiao said, meeting his gaze. “Is that why you broke up with me? Because you were afraid your sister would hurt me?”
“…” Meng Yuzhou didn’t deny it. His heart was in agony, terrified his sister might lose control, yet equally afraid Zhong Xiaoxiao might turn to someone else. His emotions teetered on the edge of eruption.
“It’ll be better once we’re in college,” Meng Yuzhou murmured, though it was unclear whether he was speaking to himself or to Zhong Xiaoxiao. “Just one more year. We only need to endure a little longer.”
“What if your sister goes to the same university as you?” Zhong Xiaoxiao asked.
At her words, Meng Yuzhou’s mind went blank. Something called hope shattered into pieces in an instant.
Stunned, Meng Yuzhou stared at Zhong Xiaoxiao. “Then… what do we do?”
