I Fall Every Time I Meet an Alpha [Transmigrated into a Book] - Chapter 30
Zhong Xiaoxiao was inwardly wailing in distress, but soon she stopped because she saw someone. The moment that person appeared at her hospital room door, her heart started pounding wildly.
“Ah, Mom!” Xiaoxiao suddenly shouted before the person could speak, startling Zhong Yuanyuan. “Goodness, you scared me! What’s wrong? Why are you yelling?”
“I want fruit! Go buy me some right now!” Xiaoxiao demanded petulantly. Yuanyuan had no choice but to humor her. “Alright, alright, I’ll go right away. What kind do you want?”
“I want honeydew and pomelo,” Xiaoxiao said randomly, her real intention being to get her mother out of the room rather than actually craving fruit.
“Okay, I’ll go get them.” Yuanyuan sighed inwardly, this child was becoming increasingly spoiled. Given the current circumstances though, she couldn’t bring herself to scold her and simply indulged her wishes.
“Xiao Qing, could you help Auntie look after Xiaoxiao for a bit?” Yuanyuan said to Meng Yuzhou.
Xiaoxiao stared nervously at Meng Yuzhou’s face, her heart thumping wildly, terrified he might suddenly speak and scare her mother out of her wits.
Meng Yuzhou merely nodded without saying a word.
Only after Yuanyuan left did Xiaoxiao finally relax completely. She beckoned for Meng Yuzhou to come closer.
“Are you feeling better?” Meng Yuzhou had brought a bag of apples to visit her.
“Yeah, I’m fine.” Worried her mother might return unexpectedly, Xiaoxiao said anxiously, “C-could you please not talk in front of my mom?”
“Why?” Meng Yuzhou looked somewhat haggard, only his eyes remaining bright and clear. As he sat by her bed, something occurred to him and he asked, “Why did Auntie call me Xiao Qing?”
“Well, that’s because…” Seeing no way out, Xiaoxiao decided to come clean. “My mom thinks you’re Meng Yuqing. Yuqing once disguised herself as you.”
“When?” Meng Yuzhou seemed surprised.
“When she came to tutor me in math before.”
“Oh,” Meng Yuzhou understood now. “So Auntie thinks I’m my sister now?”
“Yeah, that way we can…” Xiaoxiao pretended to blush shyly. “That way we can be together. My mom doesn’t approve of me dating so young.”
“Alright.” Meng Yuzhou reached out and took her plump little hand in his, gazing at her as he said, “Whatever you want. I’ll do as you say.”
“…” Feeling strange about having her hand held, Xiaoxiao quickly pulled back and complained, “Don’t do that. If my mom sees, it’ll be bad.”
Seeing Xiaoxiao’s flustered expression, Meng Yuzhou felt his thoughts wandering. He chuckled softly. “So scared of Auntie seeing us?”
“My mom won’t let me date yet,” Xiaoxiao reiterated.
“Got it,” Meng Yuzhou said with a smile. “I’ll be careful.”
“How… how’s your sister doing?” Xiaoxiao asked about Yuqing after all.
“She’s awake and fine.” At the mention of his sister, Meng Yuzhou’s smile stiffened slightly. Looking at Xiaoxiao, he felt deeply remorseful. “I’m sorry about what my sister did. She hurt others and herself.”
“I should have suggested she see a psychologist sooner. Then things wouldn’t have gotten this serious.”
“A psychologist?” Xiaoxiao was shocked. Holy moly! What was this now? Did Meng Yuqing have psychological issues?
“She has bipolar disorder, which is essentially a combination of mania and depression.”
What the F…? Mania plus depression?
Zhong Xiaoxiao was utterly dumbfounded.
“I didn’t realize her mental condition had gotten this severe,” Meng Yuzhou said with a hint of guilt.
Zhong Xiaoxiao: Neither did I.
Just then, Zhong Yuanyuan returned. Seeing her, Zhong Xiaoxiao immediately went on high alert and deliberately raised her voice, “Meng Yuqing! I’m fine now, you should go home.” She shot Meng Yuzhou a look, urging him to leave quickly.
Noticing Zhong Xiaoxiao’s mother had returned, Meng Yuzhou also hesitated. He nodded, stood up, and tilted his head slightly, putting on a strange voice as he said to Zhong Yuanyuan, “Auntie, I’ll be going now.”
“…” Zhong Xiaoxiao nearly burst out laughing at the bizarre tone. Damn, that was so unlike Meng Yuzhou! Who knew this guy could be kind of fun?
“Oh, alright,” Zhong Yuanyuan replied, then couldn’t help but ask, “What’s wrong with your voice?”
“A cold…” Meng Yuzhou muttered as he walked away.
“Ha!” This time, Zhong Xiaoxiao couldn’t hold back her laughter and wished she could pound the bed in amusement. Zhong Yuanyuan shot her a glare at her excited expression. “What’s gotten into you? You just recovered, don’t get too worked up.”
“Mm-hmm, I got it…” Zhong Xiaoxiao was practically suffocating from holding in her laughter.
“Do you want pomelo or honeydew first?” Zhong Yuanyuan asked.
“Honeydew,” Zhong Xiaoxiao managed to say after calming down a little.
While Zhong Yuanyuan went to cut the honeydew, she recalled the incident with Meng Yuqing. She no longer wanted her daughter to be friends with her. Dressing neither like a boy nor a girl, and jumping off buildings, what kind of normal girl does that?
“Xiaoxiao,” Zhong Yuanyuan said as she handed her the honeydew, sitting down with a serious tone. “From now on, let’s not get too close to that Meng Yuqing.” She felt guilty, as if she were depriving her daughter of her only friend. “Look how much she’s hurt you already. Haven’t we suffered enough? We don’t owe her anything…”
“Mom, she didn’t mean to.” Inner monologue: Screw Meng Yuqing! She totally meant it, she absolutely did! She’s practically a murderer!
And now she’s a psychiatric patient too!
“I know you don’t have many friends,” Zhong Yuanyuan said, her voice tinged with sadness. “But Meng Yuqing… she’s clearly not normal. No sane person would act like that…” She didn’t want to push too hard, afraid of upsetting her daughter. “Why don’t you try making friends with other classmates? There must be some nice ones, right?”
Zhong Xiaoxiao nibbled on the honeydew. Though it was sweet, her mother’s words left a bitter taste. The protagonist really didn’t have many friends, and in real life, she herself was a shut-in with zero social skills. She envied those effortlessly charismatic people. But she wasn’t one of them.
“I understand, Mom,” Zhong Xiaoxiao replied, just to reassure her.
Seeing her agreement, Zhong Yuanyuan secretly sighed in relief. If things got worse, she was even considering transferring her daughter to another school. Compared to her daughter’s life, academic performance didn’t matter anymore.
This private school was filled with students from wealthy or influential families. Zhong Yuanyuan had fought tooth and nail to get her daughter enrolled, hoping she’d rub shoulders with the elite and pave a bright future for herself.
But now, her perspective had changed.
Perhaps everyone should stay within their own social circles. Forcing one’s way into others’ circles will only lead to rejection. It’s too difficult to forcibly integrate into a different social stratum failure to do so might even cost one’s life.
Zhong Yuanyuan felt deeply moved.
In the past, she had been completely blinded by fame and fortune, never stopping to consider her true place in society.
