- Chapter 12 - I'm Still Waiting to See Cheng Meng
Xu Wangzhi’s expression remained indifferent. His hand stayed on the ice pack as he simply said, “Stay back.”
Li Shengfei let out a loud laugh, his facial expression turning even uglier. “You are telling me to stay back? What do you think you are? What is the relationship between Ningning and me, and what is the relationship between Ningning and you? This sort of thing is not your turn to help with. If you know what is good for you, get lost.”
He forcibly snatched the ice pack and pressed it onto Cheng Shuoning’s ankle again. Because he was angry, he failed to control his strength and directly squeezed the injury.
Cheng Shuoning’s face turned pale from the pain, and he frowned as he avoided the ice pack.
Realizing he had used too much force, Li Shengfei hurriedly tried to check the injury, but his hand was stopped in midair by someone.
Xu Wangzhi’s tone was neither cold nor hot: “Do not touch his injury.”
“You” This warning caused Li Shengfei’s anger to flare up instantly. He wanted to shake off Xu Wangzhi’s hand, but he realized he could not break free. He froze on the spot when his strength was completely no match for Xu Wangzhi.
He consistently liked playing basketball and had muscles on his body, making him much stronger than that idiot Han Tian. He was not even afraid of fighting three people at once.
Now, he was being suppressed by this person in front of him who looked like he was just a bit tall and could be knocked down with one punch? How was that possible!
Amidst his astonishment, Li Shengfei was already released. The other party, as if disgusted by having held his hand, went to the nearby sink to wash his hands clean.
Li Shengfei’s eyelids twitched wildly, and a little person in his heart kept shouting: Punch him, hit him! Beat this fool who does not know the sky is high and the earth is thick to death.
But in the end, reason triumphed over impulse. Li Shengfei said softly to Cheng Shuoning, “I did not do it on purpose, Ningning. I am sorry. Does it hurt a lot? Let me see your injury.”
Seeing that the atmosphere was becoming more and more wrong, Cheng Shuoning took the ice pack himself to apply the ice. Looking at Li Shengfei, he said, “It is fine. I can leave soon. Go back to class. You do not need to accompany me here. I can do it myself.”
Li Shengfei shook his head and smiled. “No way. I want to stay here and take care of you. I cannot leave you alone.”
{Why are you so ungrateful? I specially came over to take care of you, yet you still tell me to leave? Do you really want someone else to take care of you? Can he compare to me? Do you have any self-awareness? If you do, shut up for me.}
The angry voice caused Cheng Shuoning to tighten his grip on the ice pack in his hand. He did not know how his words could cause Li Shengfei to misunderstand so deeply. Looking down at the ice pack, he said calmly, “All of you leave.”
Li Shengfei looked at him without moving.
The youth’s thick, long eyelashes lowered slightly, making it impossible to see the expression on his face. Only his clean, fair profile could be seen. He clearly did not want to continue talking, and his entire body radiated an aura of aloofness.
Cheng Shuoning was rarely this silent, especially toward him.
Li Shengfei felt unbalanced inside and was also unwilling to leave. He simply rested his head against Cheng Shuoning’s shoulder and used his usual acting-spoiled routine to say, “Ningning, why would you tell me to leave? You never used to do that before. I want to stay and accompany you. You are injured so seriously, so how can I go to class with peace of mind? The one who should leave is that classmate of yours. How does he not have any sense at all? Let me stay and accompany you, okay, Ningning?”
The senseless Xu Wangzhi lifted his eyes to look out the window.
Dark clouds gathered together at an extremely fast speed. The sky, which had been clear for thousands of miles just moments ago, became dark and terrifying, and lightning began to dance.
A few seconds later, a deafening roll of thunder suddenly rumbled above the roof.
Li Shengfei was so startled by this thunder that he almost failed to sit steadily and fell to the floor.
Feeling somewhat embarrassed, he sat up straight. To cover up his awkwardness, he even took the sugar painting from Cheng Shuoning’s hand. “Was this bought for me? It is really cute. Then can I eat it?”
“No,” Cheng Shuoning took back the sugar painting, turning his head to look out the window. “It is going to rain. Go back quickly.”
Li Shengfei looked at the sugar painting in his hand. “But you”
Cheng Shuoning: “I am here alone, so do not worry. Go quickly.”
As the words fell, the class bell rang.
“Then I will go ask for leave for you. Rest well here.” Li Shengfei stood up. Fearing that speaking further would annoy Cheng Shuoning, he glanced at Xu Wangzhi before leaving. “Ningning wants to rest alone. Can you not understand words? Hurry up and get out.”
Xu Wangzhi adjusted the air conditioner temperature higher and closed the window properly before walking out of the infirmary.
Li Shengfei let out a contemptuous, cold laugh and followed him out.
Just as the infirmary door closed, he threw a punch toward Xu Wangzhi.
“I have seen many ungrateful people, but I have never seen one like you.”
The slender youth seemed to have a pair of eyes in the back of his head, quickly stepping aside to avoid it. He turned around and looked down at Li Shengfei from a superior height.
His eyes were deep and dark, with no emotion in the depths of his eyes, as if Li Shengfei were a dead object in his eyes, insufficient to cause any fluctuation in him.
That kind of gaze gave off an indescribably strong sense of oppression.
The surroundings were an incomparably spacious corridor, yet Li Shengfei felt it was cramped. His spine stiffened, and he was somewhat unable to breathe properly. Under Xu Wangzhi’s gaze, even his thinking became slow.
How did this person look a bit indescribably weird?
“Damn it,” he snapped out of it, cursed, grabbed a nearby flowerpot, and lifted it as a warning. “I warning you, stay away from Ningning. He is mine, understand?”
“Yours?” Xu Wangzhi repeated, his tone cold and detached. “He belongs only to himself. He does not belong to anyone.”
Li Shengfei wanted to smash it over, but the other party had already turned around and left.
What a strange person. Cheng Shuoning probably became this strange precisely because he spent too much time with this kind of strange person.
The phone ringtone rang. Li Shengfei answered in a bad mood. Hearing what the other party said, he instantly sneered, “Based on what? If you beg me, I will lend it to you.”
“I beg you,” Han Tian on the other end of the phone pretended to be humble.
“Easy to say,” Li Shengfei grinned, putting the flowerpot back in its original place. “Is it not just an umbrella? I will lend it to you then. I will leave with Cheng Meng later, so do not regret it.”
“Where are you and Cheng Meng going together?” Han Tian’s tone was full of questioning and warning.
“That has nothing to do with you then,” Li Shengfei looked up at the dark clouds. “You should coax Ningning first. You cannot possibly want both sides.”
He hung up the phone and walked toward the classroom without haste. But after walking a few steps, he suddenly turned back and kicked away the flowerpot on the ground.
Looking at the soil and flowers spilled from the flowerpot, Li Shengfei smiled slightly, and only then did he leave with satisfaction.
A fierce wind raged outside the window, and the torrential rain pattered down violently, carrying a trace of chilliness in the air.
Cheng Shuoning opened his eyes, discovering that he had leaned against the pillow and fallen asleep at some point.
There was no one in the infirmary, and it was pitch black.
He turned on his phone. It was five in the afternoon, and there was still one hour left before class ended.
Every Tuesday and Friday, they did not have to attend evening self-study, and they could go home at six.
He could no longer feel pain from the injury, though it was still slightly swollen. Cheng Shuoning put on his shoes, arranged the bedding and pillows neatly, picked up the sugar painting placed nearby, and left the infirmary.
The oncoming wind blew his clothes hollow, and the chill spread through his limbs and bones.
Cheng Shuoning could not help but shrink back. He avoided the rain and returned to the classroom just in time for the last period.
He sat back in his position, handing the sugar painting in his hand to Xu Wangzhi.
Xu Wangzhi took it, holding the sugar painting in one hand and a pen in the other.
This appearance was a bit strange, drawing side-glances from some classmates.
Zhang Xiuli from the back desk quietly asked Cheng Shuoning, “Does your foot still hurt? Are you okay?”
“It is fine,” Cheng Shuoning said, fixing his hair that had been messed up by the wind while looking at his phone.
“It is raining heavily again. I wonder if it will stop when class ends.”
“Damn it, summer has just started, yet it feels as if we have entered autumn. It is freezing to death.”
“Who has an extra umbrella? Lend me one. This child’s home is too far, and I cannot go back without an umbrella.”
“This is so far from the commissary, so I cannot buy one either. Am I destined to become a drenched chicken today? Boohoo, I do not want to.”
” ”
At first, the discussions about the rain in the classroom were still very small, but in the end, as the sound of the rain grew louder and louder, their voices also grew louder along with it.
“Quiet,” the teacher was provoked past endurance by the noise, slapped the desk twice, and glared at them as a reminder. “Bring all your minds back from the rain. Class first, and we will talk about the rest after class.”
The window on the left was suddenly opened by someone, and the fierce wind instantly poured in with the freezing rain.
Screams rose everywhere, and the teacher was so angry that he approached the prankster classmate with a long ruler. “Do you want to rebel, Li Xiaosha? Hurry up and close the window.”
“Teacher, I did not do it on purpose,” Li Xiaosha grinned and closed the window, only to open the window again the moment the teacher turned around.
This time, it was not just pure screaming, but also carried a bit of excitement. Several classmates took advantage of this gap to start dancing, and the classroom seemed to turn into a large amusement park.
Cheng Shuoning was wearing the summer school uniform. His hands and feet were freezing, and he could not even hold his pen properly.
He lowered his head and exhaled a breath toward his palm. When he looked up, a school uniform jacket was added to his desk.
Xu Wangzhi’s voice was very deep, and no emotion could be heard from it: “If you do not dislike it, wear it.”
“No need, you wear it,” Cheng Shuoning shook his head. “It is quite cold, and you do not have a jacket either.”
Xu Wangzhi turned his head to look at him: “I am not cold.”
Compared to his own shivering, the other party was indeed sitting perfectly straight, not feeling anything at all.
Cheng Shuoning put on the jacket, his voice trembling: “Th… thank you.”
This period ended up becoming self-study in the end. The teacher’s clothes were wet, so there was no way to teach, and he could only go back to change his clothes.
The culprit, Li Xiaosha, was punished by being made to stand outside the door.
He was restless and could not stand still at all, starting to dance in the corridor while stepping on the accumulated rain on the floor.
The situation in the other classes was also about the same, changing from their initial irritation toward this sudden rainstorm to becoming exceptionally excited.
As soon as the dismissal bell rang, those with umbrellas left, while those without umbrellas all crowded into the classroom, noisily discussing how to go home.
Cheng Shuoning packed his things. While he was hesitating over whether to return the school uniform to Xu Wangzhi, the other party had already stood up and left, even leaving a green umbrella for Cheng Shuoning.
That umbrella looked a bit familiar, appearing to be Xu Wangzhi’s avatar.
Cheng Shuoning picked up the umbrella and looked at it for a while. He suddenly snapped out of it, catching up to Xu Wangzhi with a limp. “Wait a moment.”
Fearing that Xu Wangzhi would leave again, Cheng Shuoning reached out to grab the hem of his clothes and handed the umbrella to him. “The rain is too big. You do not need to give it to me. I can just have someone send an umbrella over.”
Then he called Li Shengfei, wanting to ask him if he had an umbrella, but no one answered.
Cheng Shuoning opened the umbrella, holding it over both of their heads, and said, “Let us walk together. I just need to get to the school gate.”
The freezing rain was blown by the wind, tilting and splashing over completely. The sugar painting held in Xu Wangzhi’s hand was instantly soaked through, making it no longer edible.
Cheng Shuoning looked at that sugar painting, feeling it was a bit of a pity.
The person beside him did not speak, walking downstairs. Cheng Shuoning knew he had agreed, following behind him while holding the umbrella.
The first floor gathered many students who could not leave without umbrellas. The moment Cheng Shuoning and Xu Wangzhi appeared, they attracted many speculative gazes.
The wind outside grew even larger. Just as Cheng Shuoning took one step out of the corridor, he was suddenly pulled from behind by someone.
The umbrella slipped from his palm. He hurriedly tried to grab it, but someone caught the umbrella one step ahead of him, and his hand happened to catch the other party’s hand at that instant.
Once a warm hand was touched, he never wanted to leave it again. Cheng Shuoning froze, meeting Xu Wangzhi’s deep eyes, feeling his heart become restless amidst this noisy, urgent rain.
He opened his mouth, his throat dry as if glued shut, unable to say a single word.
What a strange sensation.
Looking at Xu Wangzhi’s cold, aloof face, Cheng Shuoning felt that something was quietly changing.
“Ningning,” the person who pulled him stood beside him, holding an umbrella and asking with concern, “Are you cold? I will send you back.”
Cheng Shuoning reacted, hurriedly withdrawing his hand, feeling his face burning hot.
He turned his head and said, “No need. I am leaving with my desk mate.”
Han Tian took off his jacket, draping it over Cheng Shuoning’s shoulder, and looked at him, saying, “I will send you.”
{How could you not need it when you are like this? Your face is frozen white.}
“How is your foot? Does it still hurt? Can you walk? Is it okay if I carry you over on my back?” Without waiting for Cheng Shuoning’s reply, he asked again with gentle eyes.
Really unable to distinguish whether he genuinely cared about him or if it was a passing whim, Cheng Shuoning pushed the umbrella back over Han Tian’s head, his tone cold: “Go by yourself. The umbrella can only hold one person anyway.”
“No way,” the phone dinged a few times. Han Tian took it out to look while saying to Cheng Shuoning, “I am leaving with you. Do not worry, I will not let you get drenched. Drenching me is always better than drenching your desk mate.”
In the group chat of four people, the person with a blank note and an alphabet Z avatar tagged Cheng Meng: “Come to my place and take your things away.”
Cheng Meng: “Okay. Waiting for me.jpg.”
Li Shengfei: “The rain is too big. I will go over together with him.”
Han Tian’s mind was in a mess. The more he looked at that person, the more he found him unpleasing to the eye. Tagging Cheng Meng, he was particularly unhappy: “? If he tells you to go, you go? Are you stupid? With such big rain, do not go.”
No one paid attention to him.
Han Tian stuffed his phone back into his pocket. Seeing that Cheng Shuoning still did not reply to him, he became impatient again in his heart, regretting that he had specially borrowed an umbrella from Li Shengfei to come over.
This ancestor did not want to pay attention to him at all, completely putting a hot face against a cold butt. Then what was the meaning of him doing these things?
There was no meaning.
But Han Tian still forced himself to endure it, saying, “The rain has become a bit smaller. I will carry you over on my back, and you hold the umbrella.”
Cheng Shuoning did not take the umbrella he handed over. “I said no need. Go by yourself.”
The resistant voice caused Han Tian to try his best to squeeze out a smile, asking without giving up hope, “Is it still not good if I carry you on my back?”
That smile was altogether too forced and fake. Cheng Shuoning took a glance at him, happening to hear his irritable, furious, and even frantic inner voice: {So dilly-dallying. If you really do not want to, hurry up and refuse. Do you think I want to send you that much? I am still waiting to go see Cheng Meng. If I go late, I will be outdone by the other two again. Annoying to death.}
