- Chapter 36 - Selfish Happiness
After seeing Father being taken away, I thought about what to do with my sister who was crying and begging for help.
When I asked a knight disguised as a crew member, he said she hadn’t been assaulted, but was shocked to learn that Father had tried to sell her to pirates.
“Dahlia… Rix, I’m truly sorry. I… I want things to go back to how they used to be.”
Even if she says “how they used to be”…
My brother must have thought the same thing, as he looked at me with a troubled expression.
Since we hadn’t brought any ladies-in-waiting or maids, her hair done in a chignon was disheveled, and she was still wearing yesterday’s dress.
Seeing her like this made me feel just a little bit sorry for her.
That’s when someone approached my sister.
“I’d like to hear your story. Would you accompany me?”
“…Huh!? Why am I being called!? I haven’t done anything!”
My sister pleaded with the approaching knight with a panicked expression.
“There’s a possibility you gave false testimony. We’d like to verify that.”
“I didn’t give any false testimony!”
“This is about you claiming Lord Zerath forced you and so on. If this turns out to be false, it could constitute defamation.”
“Th… that’s…!”
My sister whirled around to face us with force.
“We’re family, right? Since we’re family, we have to help each other, don’t we?”
“Lady Ramula, you and I might be family. But being family doesn’t mean we’re obligated to help you.”
I answered with a heavy sigh.
“Wait! If my family abandons me, what will become of me!?”
“What happens to your position will be up to our brother, who will become the next king.”
When I looked at my brother, he was directing a pitying gaze toward our sister.
“Well, we are family after all. If the truth comes to light and you show remorse, I might permit you to continue living in the royal castle.”
“Wait a minute. Y… you mean I might not be allowed to live in the royal castle anymore!?”
“You participated in foolish deeds with our parents. It wouldn’t be strange if that happened.”
“That’s…!”
My sister cried large tears as she pleaded.
“I didn’t think I was doing anything wrong! I genuinely believed that if I was happy, everyone would be happy! And that it was okay if someone had to be sacrificed for that!”
Having lived in a self-centered world, she must have developed that way of thinking.
It’s impressive that she could consider such things normal.
“Yikes. So that’s how she thought.”
Even after Father was taken away, there were still ship passengers at some distance. It seemed they could hear our conversation.
Since my sister was speaking particularly loudly, it was only natural they could hear everything.
My sister turned toward the direction of the voices and cried out.
“It’s not ‘yikes’! I truly believed that! Don’t make fun of me!”
“Lady Ramula, please calm down. We’ll listen to what you have to say.”
Among the knights was a woman who spoke to my sister, then grabbed her arm and started pulling her away.
“Dahlia! Rix! Help me!”
Since it was just an interrogation, she wouldn’t be mistreated. Knowing this, my brother and I turned our backs.
“Dahlia, we should head back soon or we’ll run out of time.”
“You’re right!”
I nodded to Lady Edith who had spoken to me.
We could check what happened to my sister later, and we didn’t have time to linger here.
“Dahlia! Dahlia!”
To my sister who persistently kept calling my name, I turned around and shouted.
“I wasn’t born to be your sacrifice! You’re an adult now, so take responsibility for your own actions! Experience sadness, get hurt, and learn what heartache feels like!”
Until now, being a princess, my sister had been forgiven whenever she cried. But reality isn’t that sweet.
Just because you’re a princess doesn’t mean you can push unpleasant things onto others. Not even if they’re family.
Our parents only had eyes for my sister and never loved me. Father considered me just a spare for my sister, and Mother actually hated me. My sister only ever thought about herself and never considered my feelings.
“…Did you get even a small taste of the pain of being ignored by your family?”
When I asked this, my sister’s face went blank, and she offered no resistance as the knights dragged her away.
