- Chapter 16 - The Duke's Son Who Can't Forget His Former Fiancée ①
“Your Highness Edith, the day will surely come when you regret refusing Ramula’s proposal.”
While stroking my weeping elder sister’s back, Mother said, casting a sharp glance at Lady Edith. Unfazed by such a look, Lady Edith smiled.
“Breaking off my engagement with Dahlia would be something I’d regret, so there’s no need for your concern.”
“That’s not it! You shouldn’t be with Dahlia! You’re my destined one, so why can’t you understand?!”
My elder sister looked up at Lady Edith and cried out.
“Destined one… I see. So, you mean we’re destined not to be together.”
“…Huh?”
My sister stared at Lady Edith with a dumbfounded expression. As I idly thought it was a clever retort, Mother hugged my sister and lamented.
“Poor Ramula. Please forget about His Highness Edith now.”
“No! I truly felt it was destiny! Please do something like you always have, Mother!”
It seems my sister still has no intention of giving up. Since this is the first time I’ve seen her so obsessed with a man, she must have truly fallen in love with Lady Edith. My sister doesn’t think she’s done anything wrong at all, which is probably why she’s throwing such a tantrum.
“Elder sister.”
When I called out to her, my sister turned her tear-filled eyes toward me.
“If you had been rescued even a little sooner when the pirates attacked, you might have been able to marry Lady Edith.”
“…Huh?”
“If you hadn’t been attacked by pirates and your body remained pure, you wouldn’t have violated the rules of the Rofeus Kingdom.”
“Wh-what do you mean?”
“If you had been rescued before losing your purity, you could have preserved your chastity. If what I’ve heard is true, you cannot become Lady Edith’s wife as you are now.”
I can say this because I know my sister wasn’t actually attacked by pirates. If she had truly been attacked, I wouldn’t have been able to bring it up.
“I-I wasn’t attacked or anything… Ah!”
My sister had forgotten that although she wasn’t attacked by pirates, she was no longer pure since she had been with Loin. So, I reminded her.
“No way! Then…!”
“Ramula, calm down. Let’s return to your room now.”
To prevent my sister from saying anything unnecessary, Mother took her hand and began walking away.
“That’s right. That was the important part. It’s Loin’s fault! Because of Loin, I…!”
The maids led my crying sister away while comforting her as she wept loudly.
Speaking of which, I wonder what Loin is doing right now. It’s not that I have any lingering feelings for him. But I’m curious about what I’m curious about. He probably thinks I’m dead by now, so it wouldn’t be strange if he came to check.
“Dahlia, shall we go now?”
“Ah, yes! Sorry to keep you waiting.”
“Dahlia!”
Just as I was about to run to Lady Edith’s side, I heard someone call my name. When I turned around, Loin was standing there with a shocked expression. It seemed he had just finished his duty, as I could see other knights nearby.
“Why are you here! Why didn’t you do as I said!?”
“That’s only natural!”
There was a time when I thought about dying as he wished. But whatever choice I make now has nothing to do with Loin anymore. He has no right to complain about me being alive!
“Goodbye, Loin! I’ll definitely become happy in the Rofeus Kingdom!”
“Listen to me, Dahlia! It was all for your sake!”
As Loin approached me, Lady Edith, who was standing beside me, let out a sigh.
“Interruptions keep popping up one after another.”
“My apologies!”
When I apologized, thinking I might have displeased her, Lady Edith gave a wry smile.
“It’s not your fault, Dahlia. You probably have things you want to say too, but may I handle this first?”
“Ah… y-yes.”
“Thank you.”
Lady Edith stood in front of me and spoke to Loin.
“You must be Dahlia’s former fiancé. Nice to meet you, I’m Edith Torune, Dahlia’s new fiancé.”
“What?”
Loin stopped in his tracks and stared at Lady Edith with a stunned expression.
