How to Escape from My Possessive Fiancé - Chapter 50
When Sophia shouted, the man holding the thug’s filthy hair let go. The thug’s head hit the ground with a loud thud. He tried to run away with his broken arm and leg, but the man stepped on his back so he couldn’t escape.
Sophia saw the blood flowing from the thug’s thigh and held back her nausea. Trying to stay calm, she spoke.
“That man and the shop owner worked together to take my money.”
“The shop owner?”
“Yes. He tried to take back the money I got from the refund. That man is the only witness.”
As Sophia spoke angrily, the man gave her a sorry look then stomped on the thug again, as if in revenge. He used violence so easily, without even blinking. Sophia was shocked, but didn’t show it in front of the man who had saved her life.
“Then, how about this?”
The man spoke.
“If you tell me where the shop is, I’ll take care of it.”
“Take… take care of it?”
Sophia stammered. The man smiled gently.
“Of course, I don’t mean I’ll kill him. I’ll hand him over to the guards. You may not trust me, but would you let me handle it? If word gets out that a young noble lady was attacked.”
Hearing that it might become a rumor, Sophia quickly nodded. If this reached the Princess’s ears, it would be serious.
“Ah, yes. Then, please do.”
“Thank you for trusting me.”
The man thanked her deeply and dragged the thug away. Sophia went to a store across from the shop in question, bought some clothes, changed, fixed her hair, and came out holding the man’s clothes.
Just then, the matter seemed to have been solved. She saw the shop owner and the ruined thug being dragged away by the guards. The man looked around for her and smiled as he approached.
He came toward her like someone she knew. Strangely, he felt familiar. Like someone she had known for a long time.
“You’ve changed. You look much more beautiful.”
Ignoring the cheesy compliment, Sophia handed him his clothes and the money pouch.
“Here.”
“What’s this?”
“You helped me. I want to thank you.”
The man’s expression darkened.
“I didn’t help you for money.”
“But I want to show my gratitude. If you don’t take this, I’ll feel like I owe you too much.”
“I wouldn’t mind that either.”
It didn’t sound like a joke, there was no smile on his face. He looked at Sophia sincerely. His gaze made Sophia feel confused.
“Do we know each other?”
Sophia asked suddenly. The man smiled but avoided answering and instead changed the topic.
“I’ll accept something else instead of money. If we meet again, will you grant me one request?”
That kind of talk sounded like a smooth trick. Sophia wondered if she should mention her fiancé, but in the end, she just nodded.
“All right.”
When Sophia nodded, the man smiled brightly. His skin and hair were pure white, but his eyes were a clear green. As he smiled, Sophia felt as if she could hear leaves rustling in the wind. Her heart skipped a beat.
‘I shouldn’t feel this way. I have the Duke.’
Sophia scratched her cheek awkwardly and pretended not to notice.
“I should get going.”
She didn’t think she would ever see him again. It wasn’t because she looked down on him, but because she didn’t think he was a noble. If someone like him were a noble, rumors would have spread long ago.
“See you next time.”
So, when he said that, Sophia just nodded casually and didn’t give a real answer. She didn’t even ask his name; that alone showed how she thought of him.
A grateful connection, but only that.
That was how Sophia remembered him at the time.
“So, you really did all that?”
Yulicias asked while checking the money with a doubtful look. Sophia stood calmly and nodded.
“Yes. I handled it just like you said.”
“Alone?”
“Yes.”
“Wearing that outfit?”
“Yes.”
“Lies.”
Yulicias said in a cold voice and suddenly stood up to grab Sophia’s chin. Looking straight into her eyes, she said:
“You know what happens if you lie to a royal, right?”
“Of course.”
“And yet you still claim you did it exactly as I ordered?”
“Yes.”
Well, it wasn’t entirely a lie. She had worn the outfit on the inside and she hadn’t brought another maid or guard from the palace. That was true.
Even though Sophia gave a clean answer, Yulicias didn’t believe her.
“This won’t do. Contact all the shop owners.”
When Yulicias gave that order, Michelle Piels, who had to write the letters, glanced at Sophia with worried eyes.
“Your Highness!”
Just then, one of the Empress’s maids came in and whispered something in Yulicias’s ear. Her expression went from confused to shocked to annoyed. Then she stood up quickly.
“No way. He’s already here? They said it would take two months!”
The maid whispered again. Yulicias, now very irritated, pushed the maid aside and said she was going to the Empress’s palace.
Sophia shrugged and exchanged a look with Michelle. Michelle mouthed, “Are you okay?” and Sophia nodded.
Then Yulicias shouted loudly.
“Sophia Hilden! What are you doing? Follow me!”
“Me?”
“Yes. Am I supposed to go to my mother’s palace without a maid?”
Angelina, Bienvendina, and Eve were all busy with her endless dress and jewel issues. Sophia had no choice but to follow Yulicias.
She had already been to the Empress’s palace in that horrible outfit many times, so she didn’t mind. She just hoped Yulicias wouldn’t take out her bad mood on her.
As soon as they arrived, Yulicias went straight into the Empress’s bedroom. Sophia stood outside awkwardly with the guards.
‘Wait… could it be the second prince who arrived already?’
She looked at her hands and thought. She remembered hearing it would take about two months for the prince and knights to return.
‘Then, will the celebration be moved earlier?’
It would be great if Yulicias failed her social debut, but if she said she couldn’t attend the celebration because she wasn’t ready, it would be a problem. Sophia had to meet Solid at that celebration.
“Huh? Isn’t that Sophia Hilden?”
Just then, a familiar voice called out. Sophia looked up and saw a group of noble ladies walking toward the reception room. They must be here to meet the Empress. Sophia quickly hid her trembling hands behind her back.
Not only was it humiliating to be seen by girls she knew in such clothes but right in the middle was Solid.
“Oh my, why is she dressed like that?”
“Didn’t they say she became the Princess’s maid?”
“Well, if the Princess heard the rumors, she wouldn’t want her around.”
“Is that why they dressed her like that?”
“Then why is she still here? Is she pretending not to hear us?”
Sophia’s face turned red. Her heart pounded from shame. Her pride, built up until now, seemed to vanish. She had never been this embarrassed in her life.
But the cruelest thing was Solid’s face; expressionless, like she didn’t even know Sophia.
Before Solid could see her, Sophia looked down at her shoes. She stared hard at them, pretending not to notice, then slowly looked up and met their eyes. When they saw Sophia’s burning gaze, they scoffed and walked past her. Solid never once met Sophia’s eyes.
Yulicias came out much later. It really must have been the second prince who arrived early. She couldn’t hide her irritation and grumbled nonstop at Sophia.
But Sophia barely heard what she was saying. After following Yulicias back to the palace, she couldn’t take it anymore and ran to the garden.
The twilight garden was mostly dark, except for a few lights. If she just stayed quiet, she could hide in the shadows completely. Sophia bit her lip and squeezed her handkerchief, which she had brought just in case she cried.
‘Solid hates me.’
That thought hurt so much, she couldn’t even say it out loud. It grew bigger and heavier in her mind.
That cold stare. Those eyes, like even hatred had faded. It showed how long Solid had hated her. Solid had said she burned Sophia’s apology letter. Did she really believe Sophia made her lose the child?
If so, how could Sophia prove otherwise?
And if she couldn’t, how could she ever earn Solid’s forgiveness?
The weight of guilt crushed her shoulders. The loss was too heavy to bear. Sophia bowed her head and let the tears fall freely.
“Sophia?”
Then someone called her. Sophia lifted her tear-filled eyes and looked.
To her surprise, it was that white-haired man, the one who saved her life.
