How I Accidentally Bent My Best Friend - Chapter 9
At that moment, Chen Yushu’s breath hitched. Unconsciously, she clenched her hands, staring intently at Lu Wei’s lips, her nerves stretched to the limit. Yet, she dared not be too obvious, afraid of revealing herself, and could only repeatedly suppress the emotions swirling in her eyes.
She had no idea how she should react if she heard Lu Wei agree.
Unconsciously, a cold sweat broke out across her body, and the exhaustion from military training had long since faded from her awareness.
Lu Wei stopped in her tracks, her brows slowly furrowing. “Shushu, you said Huh? What’s wrong? Are you feeling unwell?”
Hearing this, Chen Yushu’s heart skipped a beat. She dodged Lu Wei’s outstretched hand and asked, “What were you just about to say?”
“Why do you look so pale?” Lu Wei’s attention was entirely focused on her now. She grabbed Chen Yushu’s arm and pressed a hand to her forehead. “Did you get heatstroke?”
A wave of dizziness washed over Chen Yushu, nausea churning in her stomach. Her lips moved mechanically as she repeated, “What were you just about to say?”
“What?” Lu Wei leaned in closer, not catching her words.
“Nothing.” Chen Yushu snapped back to reality, realizing her expression must be ghastly. She quickly lowered her head and brushed it off. “Maybe it’s just low blood sugar.”
“Then let’s hurry and get some food. Lean on me.”
Chen Yushu nodded but couldn’t resist adding, “You still haven’t answered Wen Yan, though.”
“What’s going on with you, Chen Yushu?” Lu Wei lightly tapped her head. “Why are you so concerned about my love life? Unless”
Chen Yushu’s heart lurched. She stared blankly at Lu Wei, a panicked sense of impending exposure gripping her.
“you like Wen Yan?”
Chen Yushu’s breath rushed back out in a heavy exhale, followed by an exasperated retort. “Are you insane?!”
“Hahaha, I figured it wasn’t likely.” Lu Wei chuckled. “Let’s eat first, then talk.”
At that, Chen Yushu didn’t dare press further.
Following the signs, the two slowly made their way to the school gate.
But as soon as they stepped outside, they ran into an unexpected visitor.
“Lu Wei!” Wen Yan’s voice cut through the crowd, crystal clear in both their ears.
Speak of the devil.
Chen Yushu’s spine stiffened instantly. A few seconds later, she turned toward the source of the voice. Wen Yan was wearing a little white dress paired with an asymmetrical vest, her face adorned with delicate, understated makeup her appearance was undeniably striking.
Lu Wei inhaled sharply, almost imperceptibly, then walked over with forced casualness. “What brings you here?”
“I texted you. Didn’t you see?” Wen Yan got straight to the point.
Lu Wei froze, scratching her head guiltily. “I just finished military training and haven’t had a chance to check my phone yet.” As she spoke, she made a show of reaching for it.
Wen Yan grabbed her hand. “No need. I’ll just tell you directly.”
Chen Yushu felt it inappropriate to stay any longer and said to Lu Wei, “I’ll wait over there.”
“It’s fine.” Wen Yan turned to her with a smile. “I’ll only take a moment.”
She looked back at Lu Wei. “You still haven’t given me an answer about last night.”
Chen Yushu had no choice but to turn away, though her ears involuntarily perked up. Her heart skipped a beat at the words, but she couldn’t help but admire Wen Yan’s boldness.
Then again, this was exactly the kind of thing Wen Yan would do.
Ahem. Lu Wei’s mind raced, then suddenly she had an idea. Playing dumb, she said, “What? I was so drunk last night, I don’t remember anything.”
Wen Yan studied her expression, knowingly raising an eyebrow but not calling her out. Instead, she said straightforwardly, “Then I’ll say it again.”
“Wait!” Lu Wei bit her lip anxiously, took off her hat, and fanned herself, trying to figure out how to handle the situation.
Wen Yan burst out laughing. “Why stop pretending? It’s just a confession, why so scared? I’m not some monster.”
“That’s not it.” Lu Wei exhaled sharply. “I’ve always seen you as a friend. You ambushing me like this isn’t fair!”
“That’s you. I never saw you as just a friend.”
“So you’ve been planning this for a while?” Lu Wei’s pupils dilated as she took a small step back.
Wen Yan arched a brow noncommittally, then grabbed her collar and pulled her closer. “Now that you know, what do you think?”
Lu Wei immediately shook her head like a rattle drum. “Look, I’ve never liked women before no, I mean”
“No problem. Start considering women now. Or, consider me.”
Lu Wei let out a bitter laugh, momentarily speechless.
Wen Yan pressed on. “So? Give me a try.”
Lu Wei pressed her lips together and fell silent.
Hearing this, Chen Yushu unconsciously clenched the hem of her clothes, holding her breath as she and Wen Yan both waited for Lu Wei’s answer.
At that moment, she suddenly regretted staying. She should have run far away at least then she wouldn’t have to face the outcome head-on.
Time slowed to a crawl, as if an entire century had passed.
Lu Wei sighed, tugging her clothes back with a hint of seriousness. “Wen Yan, I really do see you as just a friend. Nothing more.”
“Oh. So, I’m being rejected?” Wen Yan asked without a trace of awkwardness, though a hint of regret lingered in her tone.
Chen Yushu twisted her fingers, her heart still suspended midair, unsteady, afraid of any sudden twists.
Lu Wei swallowed and gave a faint, “Mhm.”
“Alright.” Wen Yan shrugged nonchalantly, flashing a bright smile. “It’s fine if you can’t accept it now. We’ve got plenty of time.”
With that, she winked at Lu Wei, waved, and left without another word.
Having overheard someone else’s rejection, Chen Yushu felt a shameful flicker of joy in her chest.
Lu Wei, however, rubbed her temples in frustration and slumped against Chen Yushu, groaning, “How did this happen? Ugh, Shushu, what do I do now?”
“How should I know?” Chen Yushu replied coolly, pushing her away as she walked ahead. “I’m hungry.”
“Chen Yushu, do you even have a heart?” Lu Wei grumbled, following after her. “I felt like I was being tortured just now, and you just stood there watching! You didn’t even think to save me!”
Chen Yushu’s heartbeat hadn’t fully settled yet. Now that the tension had suddenly dissipated, exhaustion washed over her. She glanced lazily at Lu Wei and sighed inwardly.
She was the one who’d been waiting for a verdict.
“How was I supposed to know what you wanted? What if you did want to date her? I wouldn’t dare ruin your love life,” Chen Yushu said flatly.
“Keep mocking me. Just wait till you” Lu Wei suddenly stopped mid-sentence, her gaze lingering on Chen Yushu’s face as she studied her closely.
Chen Yushu’s features leaned towards an icy elegance narrow, elongated eyes with amber-colored pupils that always carried a hint of detachment when she looked at others. Her tall, straight nose bridge stood out prominently, softened slightly by a small mole at the tip, tempering the sharpness of her overall demeanor with a touch of gentleness. Her lips were neither too thin nor too thick, with a pronounced cupid’s bow that exuded an indescribable allure.
Her face was undeniably striking yet equally unapproachable.
“What are you doing?” Chen Yushu frowned, unnerved by her stare, and waved a hand in front of her face.
Lu Wei grabbed her wrist, her gaze deep and unwavering. “Chen Yushu, I just realized you’re actually quite beautiful.”
“And here I thought a dog might finally cough up ivory,” Chen Yushu retorted, rolling her eyes. “Where are we eating? I’m starving.”
“Fine, ignore my praise.” Lu Wei huffed in frustration. “Chen Yushu, don’t expect to hear another compliment from me ever again. Consider this your punishment!”
Chen Yushu: “Then I should thank you.”
“Chen! Yu! Shu!”
