How I Accidentally Bent My Best Friend - Chapter 42
After finishing classes in the afternoon, Chen Yushu suddenly realized it was Friday no evening self-study session meant no need to rush for dinner. So, she decided to head straight back to the dorm.
But then, at the foot of the dormitory building, she once again spotted that familiar figure.
Chen Yushu sighed and couldn’t help muttering under her breath, “Still haunting me, huh?”
“Shushu.” Lu Wei approached, standing awkwardly in front of her, and asked, “Are you a little less angry now?”
Chen Yushu turned her head away with a soft hum, then rummaged through her backpack and pulled out a piece of paper, handing it to her. “I don’t need this anymore. Take it back.”
“Hehe, okay.” Lu Wei smiled as she took it, tucking it into her pocket and patting it gently. “I’ll keep it and look at it every day. I promise I won’t make the same mistake again, alright?”
Chen Yushu didn’t respond, lowering her head to stare at the tips of her shoes. After a long pause, she finally hummed, “Do whatever you want.”
“Then don’t be mad anymore, okay?” Lu Wei crouched down, tilting her head to observe the expression on Chen Yushu’s face. “Give me a chance to make it up to you, how about that?”
Chen Yushu raised an eyebrow and pursed her lips. “We’ll see. I’m going up now.”
“Okay, I’ll go with you.” As she spoke, Lu Wei took her backpack and slung it over her shoulder. The moment it settled, a flicker of pain crossed her face, but it vanished in an instant.
“Weakling.” Chen Yushu watched silently, unable to resist muttering under her breath.
Lu Wei immediately turned her head sharply. “Did you just insult me?”
“No.”
“I heard you.”
After putting down the backpack and resting in the dorm for a while, Chen Yushu grabbed her meal card and headed to the cafeteria. Naturally, Lu Wei tagged along eagerly.
“Shushu, slow down, wait for me!”
Ignoring her, Chen Yushu walked ahead on her own. Lu Wei sidled up beside her, chattering nonstop. “I’ve deeply realized my mistake and am willing to make up for it. I’ll run your campus jogging sessions for you this semester.”
With that, Lu Wei looked at her expectantly.
Chen Yushu remained unmoved and continued walking.
“Hmm… and… and the Youth Study sessions I’ll do those for you this semester too!”
Chen Yushu paused mid-step, glanced back, and shot her a disdainful look, as if to say, “Are you trying to brush me off like a beggar?”
“Uh” Lu Wei swallowed, racking her brains for more ideas. “Oh, right! And the gaming rankings, I’ll definitely boost your score sky-high!”
Hearing this, Chen Yushu felt a flicker of interest but kept her expression neutral, as if waiting to see what else she could offer.
“Oh, and you have early classes every day, right? I’ll bring you breakfast for a week.” Lu Wei’s eyes lit up. “No, for a month!”
Chen Yushu lifted her eyelids and gave her a lazy glance. “The whole semester.”
“No problem!” Lu Wei immediately conceded. “Just one semester? Easy peasy.”
Seeing the smug grin on Lu Wei’s face, Chen Yushu wrinkled her nose in disdain and slowly added, “Don’t celebrate too soon. I haven’t said I forgive you yet.”
“Oh.” Lu Wei pouted, but her pitiful expression lasted only a moment before she nudged closer to Chen Yushu. “Then I’ll keep trying.”
“Stay away from me.” Chen Yushu pushed her back, but her hand accidentally brushed against something cold. She turned to look and saw Lu Wei suddenly staring intently at her. Under the faint glow of the dim streetlights, Lu Wei’s eyes shimmered with a clear, watery light, filled with focus and a hint of something deeper.
“Chen Yushu, I’m sorry.”
“You ignoring me when you’re angry really scares me.”
“Seeing you hurt and upset makes me especially, especially sad.”
“I don’t want to lose you.”
With the last sentence, Lu Wei lowered her head, her long lashes veiling the emotions in her eyes. Her murmur was as light as a wisp of smoke, quickly dissipating into the air, but only she knew it had also etched itself into her heart.
Chen Yushu’s gaze rested on her face, unable to discern her meaning and not daring to speculate further.
After a moment, Lu Wei sniffled and looked up again, her eyes already rimmed with red. “Let’s be good from now on, okay? I don’t want I don’t want to go through that again.”
Chen Yushu’s throat tightened, and she quickly averted her eyes, about to step forward. “Don’t even start. Don’t think that just because you”
In the next second, Lu Wei wrapped her arms around her from behind, her cheek still carrying a lingering, damp warmth pressed against the back of Chen Yushu’s neck. “I won’t make you angry. I just want to be with you forever.”
Chen Yushu didn’t move. After a long pause, she let out a very soft sigh.
On their way back from dinner, they suddenly ran into two of Lu Wei’s roommates. Chen Yushu’s impression of them was still stuck on the last club event, and instantly, those unpleasant memories flooded her mind. Her mood, which had been improving, plummeted to rock bottom.
She always says such sweet things to my face, but how much does Lu Wei really care about me in her heart?
What Lu Wei wants is just a friend who will never leave her, and I’m clearly the best choice.
But how can I refuse? I like her so much.
Is it because she knows we won’t part that she can set me aside at certain times?
Chen Yushu couldn’t stop these thoughts, and suddenly felt a dull ache in her chest, making it hard to breathe. Unconsciously, she quickened her pace.
The howling wind whipped past her ears, buzzing incessantly. Chen Yushu felt her mind grow heavy, unwilling to think about anything, just wanting to escape to a world of her own.
Just then, Lu Wei suddenly stepped right in front of her, the white mist of their breath clouding both their eyes.
“Why are you walking so fast?” Lu Wei panted slightly. “I was talking to you, why have you been ignoring me?”
Chen Yushu looked at her blankly. “Really?”
“Yeah.” Lu Wei nodded, leaning closer with concern. “What’s wrong?”
“Weren’t you just with your roommates.?” Chen Yushu frowned, hesitating as she asked.
“I just said hi to them.” Lu Wei replied. “Look, they’ve already run ahead.”
Chen Yushu followed her gaze and indeed saw the two girls walking away in the distance. She bit her lip, unsure why, but a sense of unease still lingered in her heart.
“Next time, don’t run off so fast.” Lu Wei took her hand, looking at her seriously. “From now on, I won’t let you stand alone.”
Chen Yushu made a soft sound of acknowledgment in her throat and was about to look away when her eyes suddenly fixed on the crossbody bags the two roommates were carrying.
The same color, the same style, with two cartoon faces on the front.
Chen Yushu’s heart skipped a beat as she stared intently at them until the two girls disappeared into the dormitory building.
If she remembered correctly, didn’t Lu Wei say that they each had one of those bags?
Noticing her strange expression, Lu Wei turned his head in confusion, only catching a glimpse of two figures quickly walking away. Just as he was about to ask Chen Yushu what was wrong, she spun around angrily and coldly tossed out, “I’m leaving. Don’t follow me.”
“What?” Lu Wei stood there bewildered, utterly puzzled.
Smooth talker! Repeat offender! How could I have believed her nonsense! Liar!
Returning to her dorm, Chen Yushu immediately spotted the crossbody bag placed on the chair. Instantly, her anger flared up even more. Out of sight, out of mind she strode over, crumpled the bag into a ball, and stuffed it into the drawer.
“Go carry it with them then!” Fuming so hard her mind went blank, Chen Yushu sat on the chair panting heavily. “I’ll never accept anything from you again! You fickle and hypocritical jerk!”
“Hypocrite!”
A minute later, the word was jotted down in her little notebook.
hypocritical. Insincere, two-faced.
Just then, Lu Wei called. When she didn’t answer, he kept sending messages to ask what was wrong.
Chen Yushu didn’t want to deal with him, but afraid he might show up at her door, she decided to confront him directly.
After sending the message, she stared intently at her phone screen, thinking: Let’s see how you try to talk your way out of this one!
Sure enough, Lu Wei didn’t reply for quite some time.
Chen Yushu let out a sigh, then caught sight of the bag’s strap peeking out from the drawer. Her anger surged again, and she yanked the bag out, ready to throw it straight into the trash.
At that moment, Lu Wei’s message came through.
[I swear to heaven! You’ve really got me all wrong this time!]
