How I Accidentally Bent My Best Friend - Chapter 39
After finishing the meal, Lu Wei finally snapped out of that strange state and followed Chen Yushu to the dormitory to get the CET-4 materials.
“Here, take them.” Chen Yushu pulled a few notebooks from under the desk and handed them to Lu Wei. “No doodling, no losing them, got it?”
“Put them on the desk first. I’m not planning to leave yet.” Lu Wei furrowed her brows and whined, nudging Chen Yushu aside before plopping down and commandeering her chair.
Chen Yushu gritted her teeth, wishing she could smack Lu Wei over the head with the notebooks. “Why are you still sitting here instead of going back to study properly?”
“The emperor isn’t worried, but the eunuch is.” Lu Wei pouted and muttered under her breath.
“Huh?” Chen Yushu tapped the notebooks in her hand. “Say that again.”
A chill ran down Lu Wei’s spine, and she instinctively hunched her shoulders. She quickly stood up, snatched the notebooks from Chen Yushu’s hands, patted her butt, and dashed off like a streak of lightning, shouting as she ran, “I said Chen Yushu is a nag!”
“Lu Wei! How dare you run!” Chen Yushu made as if to chase her but heard Lu Wei’s footsteps fading rapidly down the hallway.
The dormitory immediately erupted in laughter.
“Hahahaha, only Lu Wei can drive Shushu this crazy!”
Chen Yushu: “My kindness was taken for ill intent. I’m never helping her again!”
“Isn’t that what you say every time?” Jiang Yuran raised an eyebrow, wearing an expression that said she saw right through it.
Chen Yushu was instantly speechless. She let out a soft humph and declared, “If I help her again, I’m a dog.”
The course load in the second semester of sophomore year was no lighter than in the first semester of freshman year. With nearly full schedules during the day, aside from evening self-study sessions, there was little time left for English study. Fortunately, Chen Yushu had already gone through the past exam papers twice and only needed to memorize vocabulary and do some exercises daily to maintain her proficiency.
Meanwhile, Jiang Yuran was growing increasingly frantic. She couldn’t help but ask, “Does the school still allow retaking the CET-4 for a higher score?”
Chen Yushu shook her head. “I don’t know. Why don’t you ask Senior Jiang Yunxi?”
“Oh right, why didn’t I think of that?” Jiang Yuran immediately took out her phone and sent a message to Jiang Yunxi.
Seeing this, Chen Yushu couldn’t help but ask curiously, “How far have you two gotten now?”
“Ugh.” Jiang Yuran sighed heavily. “Still in the ambiguous stage.”
“Huh? Didn’t you say last time that you were just a thin layer away from making it official?” Chen Yushu asked in surprise.
Jiang Yuran shrugged helplessly. “Yeah, but there’s no helping it. That thin layer just won’t break.”
Chen Yushu hesitated before suggesting, “Maybe you should take the initiative?”
“I have! I’ve been very proactive. I like all her WeChat Moments posts every day.”
“Huh?” Chen Yushu’s jaw dropped in shock, her expression a mix of disbelief and bewilderment. She tentatively asked, “Um, are you sure that counts as taking the initiative?”
Jiang Yuran raised her eyebrows as if it were obvious. “Of course it does! Wait, Senior Jiang replied. What? You can’t retake the CET-4 once you’ve passed?! Just kill me now! Can I skip the exam?”
“Stop overthinking it and focus on studying. There’s still time.” Chen Yushu said. “When we go back tonight, I’ll have Lu Wei return the notebooks to me. You can take pictures of the notes. They’re full of.”
“Wah, Shushu, you’re an absolute angel! I, Jiang Yuran, will be forever”
“Alright, alright, you’ve caught Ye Chiwan’s contagious dramatics.”
Evening self-study ended.
As soon as Chen Yushu stepped out of the teaching building, she saw Lu Wei standing under a streetlamp, clutching two books tightly in her arms, hunched over and shivering from the cold.
“Shushu, you’re finally here! I Achoo, I’m f-freezing! Why is it so cold at night?” As Chen Yushu approached, Lu Wei quickly slipped her hands under the back of Chen Yushu’s hood, hiding behind her to shield herself from the howling wind.
“The temperature dropped tonight, dummy,” Chen Yushu grumbled as she unwrapped her scarf. “You always end up using my scarf. Next time, I’m not walking with you.”
Lu Wei sniffled. “Is it such a big deal to borrow your scarf?”
“Then why don’t you wear your own? You always use mine.” Chen Yushu turned and shot her a glare. “By the way, did you bring the notebook I gave you? I need to take it back tonight to show Jiang Yuran. I’ll return it to you tomorrow.”
“Huh?” Lu Wei stammered nervously. “A-all of them?”
“Why do you sound so guilty?” Chen Yushu paused, turned around, and narrowed her eyes. “What did you do? Did you stain it or lose it?”
“No! I just don’t have it with me right now. I’ll give it to you tomorrow.”
Hearing this, Chen Yushu relaxed slightly. “It’s fine. I’ll go back to the dorm with you to get it.”
“It’s not in the dorm!” Lu Wei blurted out, then hesitated. “It’s in the study room no, the art studio! Yeah, the art studio!”
Chen Yushu studied her expression closely, her suspicion growing. She crossed her arms and interrogated, “Really? I think you’re lying.”
“No, I’m not! I’ll give it to you tomorrow, okay?” Lu Wei straightened her back, trying to look serious.
The more Chen Yushu watched her, the more something felt off. “If it’s in the art studio, fine. Let’s go get it now. There’s still time.”
At this, Lu Wei visibly panicked but forced herself to stay calm. “But it’s so cold now. How about ”
“Tell me the truth. Where is my notebook?” Chen Yushu’s voice rose unintentionally.
Lu Wei flinched, her eyelashes trembling. After a long pause, she mumbled incoherently, “I gave it to someone else.”
“What?”
Lu Wei hurriedly explained, “Not gave! I just lent it to them to look at!”
Chen Yushu closed her eyes and took a deep breath. “For how many days?”
Lu Wei timidly held up one finger.
“Don’t lie to me!”
Lu Wei added two more fingers. “They said ”
Before she could finish, Chen Yushu turned around and strode away without another word.
