How I Accidentally Bent My Best Friend - Chapter 32.2
Cornered and feeling trapped, Chen Yushu’s mind scrambled for an escape. Fortunately, her brain reacted just in time. “You are a fickle radish. Did I say something wrong?”
“What did I do?” Lu Wei’s eyes widened in disbelief, her attention successfully diverted. “You’re talking nonsense!”
“So what were you two doing just now?” Chen Yushu mumbled vaguely.
“Don’t even mention it.” Lu Wei planted her hands on her hips. “He confessed to me, said I have great temperament and a good personality.”
Chen Yushu’s chest tightened, her breath catching in her throat. “Really?”
“Yeah.” Lu Wei nodded. “We’ve only exchanged a few words, and he already knows my personality? Screw that. He’s probably just into my looks.”
Hearing this, Chen Yushu relaxed slightly and couldn’t help but chuckle.
“You know what’s even more ridiculous?” Lu Wei shook her head, rolled her eyes, and scoffed. “After I turned him down, he asked me to introduce you to him. Talk about wishful thinking!”
Listening to this, Chen Yushu felt her heart settle completely back in her chest.
“Good thing I have sharp judgment!” Lu Wei swayed proudly. “Learn from me, got it?”
“Mm, got it.”
“Wait, no.” Lu Wei suddenly frowned, tilting her head to study Chen Yushu carefully. “You look like such a well-behaved, studious girl exactly the type those scumbags love to trick.”
Chen Yushu pouted indifferently. “It’s fine. I don’t plan on dating anyway.”
Hearing this, Lu Wei felt an inexplicable surge of joy, her lips curling into a smile. “Really? That’s the right way to think!”
Then, a sudden idea flashed in her mind. She nervously licked her lips. “Chen Yushu.”
“Yeah, what’s up?”
Lu Wei swallowed, unconsciously holding her breath. “How about neither of us dates?”
Whether afraid of rejection or something else, she quickly sped up her explanation. “Even though the beginning of a relationship might be sweet, eventually you’ll argue and break up. Even if you get married, life won’t be easy. So wouldn’t it be better not to date at all?”
“Let’s just stay together. After graduation, we can move in together go grocery shopping, cook, take out the trash, walk the dog, and maybe even raise a couple of kittens.”
Chen Yushu dug her thumbnail into the flesh between her fingers, unable to stop herself from imagining the scene Lu Wei described.
No third person intruding, forever staying in the role of friends, spending a lifetime together this was already the absolute best outcome.
Chen Yushu had to admit, she was shamelessly tempted.
“So? What do you say?” Lu Wei panted slightly, her words lingering, her gaze fixed nervously on Chen Yushu.
Chen Yushu’s answer tilted uncontrollably toward one side of the scale, teetering. She bit her lip and asked, “Are you serious?”
“As serious as gold!” Lu Wei raised her hand in a vow. “So is that a yes?”
The scale tipped completely. ” Okay.”
“Yay!” Lu Wei leaped up, wrapping her arms around Chen Yushu and bouncing joyfully. “You can’t take it back, you know!”
“Mm, pinky promise.”
“Deal!” Lu Wei immediately released her, extending her pinky. “Pinky swear.”
After linking fingers and sealing the promise, Lu Wei didn’t let go. Instead, she hooked her pinky with Chen Yushu’s, swinging their hands back and forth, her happiness overflowing.
Chen Yushu smiled softly along with her. “Alright, curfew’s almost here. Let’s head back.”
Lu Wei shook her head, suddenly leaning against Chen Yushu’s shoulder and nuzzling her. In a soft, coaxing voice, she whined, “What do I do? I already want to live with you right now.”
“Huh?” Chen Yushu’s voice instantly grew hoarse, flustered as she urged, “Let’s go, hurry up.”
“Alright.” Lu Wei reluctantly withdrew her pinky finger, turned around, and hopped away, then looked back to wave at her, strands of pale purple hair fluttering in the breeze.
Chen Yushu watched her retreating figure, her eyes filled with an undisguised possessiveness.
She thought to herself, a promise sealed with a pinky swear could never be broken.
Two days later, the long-awaited sports meet dreaded only by the freshmen finally arrived.
Early in the morning, just past seven, the class monitor knocked on the dormitory door, urging everyone to get up and gather at the field.
“Isn’t the competition starting at 8:30?” Ye Chiwan glanced at the time, still groggy.
Xia Ke: “Yeah, the school said to arrive by eight.”
“The department said 7:50, the class said 7:30, and then ” Jiang Yuran grumbled wearily, but before she could finish, a long, drawn-out snore echoed through the room.
Ye Chiwan angrily threw her phone onto the bed and sat up indignantly. “Damn it! They’ve really mastered the art of squeezing every last drop out of us!”
Chen Yushu pulled the blanket over her face in agony, hoping to block out the noise.
Soon, a second round of knocking came.
The three of them sat up with visible resentment, then turned in unison to look at Chen Yushu, who was still buried under her blanket. Ye Chiwan smirked mischievously, slipped out of bed quietly, and approached Chen Yushu’s bedside.
“Chen Yushu, you’re going to be late for class!”
“I’m getting up right now!” Chen Yushu jolted awake from her dream and sat up abruptly, only to be met with a burst of laughter.
“Hahaha, get up already. The class monitor is nagging again.”
Chen Yushu nodded, still bleary-eyed, and climbed down from her bed.
By the time they hurried to the field, half of the students from the neighboring department hadn’t even arrived. Chen Yushu instinctively scanned for the art department’s location separated from hers by another department.
Just then, she felt someone gently tug at her hair. Turning around, she saw Lu Wei crouched in the aisle, her hair tied into a high ponytail, her face adorned with delicate makeup, radiating youthful energy.
Lu Wei grinned, “Hehe, I spotted you right away. Why did your class come so early?”
“Don’t even ask,” Chen Yushu couldn’t help but complain, recounting the department’s absurd demands.
Lu Wei burst into laughter without a care for her image. “I can’t, I’ve got to go.”
Only then did Chen Yushu notice the green volunteer uniform in her hand. “Mm.”
“I’ll come find you again when I have time.”
“Got it. Hurry up and go.”
After a series of opening ceremonies, the competitions finally began.
“They’ve called for the athletes to gather. When does your long jump start?” Jiang Yuran asked from beside her.
Chen Yushu checked her phone. “No updates yet.”
Jiang Yuran: “Okay, I’m heading off then. I’ll come back to cheer for you.”
“Mm.”
Chen Yushu scanned the field and quickly spotted Lu Wei’s figure, her gaze involuntarily fixating on her every move.
Suddenly, the girl on the field turned her head, but the distance was too great for Chen Yushu to make out her expression. Wondering if Lu Wei had seen her too, she watched as Lu Wei raised a hand and waved in her direction.
Just then, their class let out a small cheer. Chen Yushu shifted her attention to the track, where the women’s 100-meter race was underway. At the sound of the starting gun, the athletes shot forward like bolts of lightning.
The neighboring department, armed with a loudspeaker, roared with encouragement, drowning out their own cheers.
Before long, they somehow managed to get hold of a loudspeaker too.
“Pass it forward, to the people in the front row.”
As the loudspeaker was passed along, it ended up in Chen Yushu’s hands. Just then, someone started egging her on, “Chen Yushu, hurry up and shout!”
Instantly, Chen Yushu felt like she was holding a hot potato and wished she could throw it away immediately. “I can’t do it. Here, you take it.”
She hastily handed the loudspeaker to the person next to her, only to find that the girl was just as introverted as she was. The girl immediately pulled her hands back, shaking her head repeatedly. “No, no, you do it.”
Chen Yushu’s face flushed red, and she broke out in a nervous sweat as she frantically scanned the crowd for someone more suitable.
“It’s our turn! Chen Yushu, hurry up and shout the slogan!”
“What slogan?” Chen Yushu’s mind went blank, having forgotten everything. The girl beside her quickly reminded her, “It’s in the class group chat.”
“Okay, okay.” Chen Yushu hurriedly opened her phone and finally resigned herself to her fate. On the verge of tears, she stood up, walked to the front, raised the loudspeaker, and after a moment of gathering her courage, shouted the slogan.
The first line went somewhat okay, but as she went on, her voice grew weaker and weaker.
Why did they have to put a socially anxious person through this?
Just then, someone tapped her on the shoulder. Lu Wei leaned against the railing, raising an eyebrow curiously. “Little Yushu, I never expected you to be capable of something like this.”
Seeing who it was, Chen Yushu’s eyes lit up as if she had spotted a savior. She was about to hand over the loudspeaker when she suddenly remembered that Lu Wei wasn’t from her class.
Her face immediately scrunched up again. “I was forced into this! I don’t know how it ended up in my hands, and now I can’t pass it on!”
“Hahahaha, look, it seems like your classmate is about to arrive. Get ready to shout.”
It was the final two legs of the 400×4 relay race, and the atmosphere had reached its peak. Chen Yushu, however, felt nothing but misery. She glanced back, hoping someone would come to her rescue.
Suddenly, she felt the loudspeaker being taken from her hands. Lu Wei adjusted the volume and asked, “What’s your class slogan?”
Chen Yushu quickly handed her the phone. Lu Wei read it aloud twice quickly, then shouted it at the top of her lungs.
The people behind her were taken aback but eventually caught on, though their voices remained soft.
Chen Yushu bit her lip awkwardly. The next moment, she saw Lu Wei place one hand on her hip and hold the loudspeaker with the other, saying, “You guys in the back two rows, can you put some energy into it? Even the girls’ voices are louder than yours!”
“Who is she?”
“I don’t know, but whatever, just follow along and shout!”
This time, the voices were indeed much louder.
“Whew, by the way, what’s the name of your classmate who’s sprinting the final leg?” Lu Wei asked casually, acting as if she were already one of them.
A few people from the class eagerly replied, “Her name is Hu Xiao!”
“OK, when I shout her name later, you all shout ‘Go!'”
“Sure, no problem.”
Chen Yushu looked at her in disbelief, her eyes unconsciously filled with admiration. How on earth did she do it? She probably would never understand it in her entire life.
Under Lu Wei’s leadership, their class’s cheers gradually overpowered those of the neighboring department. The classmate who had been slightly lagging behind, upon hearing her name, suddenly found a burst of energy and charged toward the finish line in one go.
Chen Yushu felt her blood ignite with excitement. Following Lu Wei’s lead, she finally raised her voice and shouted along.
Suddenly, Lu Wei held the megaphone up to her mouth, and her voice immediately amplified, carrying clearly across the space.
“Wasn’t that a great shout?” Lu Wei tilted her head and gave her a thumbs-up.
Chen Yushu chuckled a little sheepishly, her pupils reflecting Lu Wei’s eyes.
As one match ended, murmurs of conversation began to ripple through the stands.
“Is this what it’s like in the world of social butterflies? So cool! Which class is she in?”
“You don’t know her? Remember during military training, there was an instructor.”
“Oh my god! It’s her! Is Chen Yushu friends with her?”
“Yeah, I heard they grew up together and both got into Yunda University. One is a science prodigy, the other is the daughter of Wang Zhizhi, that really famous illustrator in our country.”
“Holy moly, they look so stunning standing together, such a perfect match! Help, I’m totally shipping them I’ve already imagined an eight-million-word novel in my head!”
