How I Accidentally Bent My Best Friend - Chapter 11
Chen Yushu’s eyes suddenly grew hot. She hadn’t even gotten anything yet, so how could she already be losing it?
“Cough, cough” Her throat itched, and she clutched her chest as a violent coughing fit overtook her.
Hearing the noise, Lu Wei immediately turned her head, quickly stood up, and walked over to check on her. She helped Chen Yushu sit up, patting her back to soothe her. “Are you okay?”
The coughing wouldn’t stop. Chen Yushu gripped Lu Wei’s arm tightly, coughing so hard it felt like her heart and lungs were being torn apart. Only when tears welled up in her eyes did it finally subside.
Lu Wei pulled her into an embrace, gently patting her back and letting her lean on her shoulder to recover. “Poor thing, you get sick the moment you’re exhausted. I should’ve noticed sooner and taken you to the hospital at noon.”
Chen Yushu coughed dryly twice more, her voice hoarse as she said, “Water.”
“Okay, okay.” Lu Wei freed one hand and unscrewed the cap of a water bottle. “This is room temperature. Drink slowly.”
Chen Yushu took the bottle, but her arm was weak, and she nearly dropped it.
“Give it here, I’ll help you.” Seeing this, Lu Wei took the bottle back and took a sip herself.
Instantly, Chen Yushu’s pupils dilated in shock, staring at her in disbelief.
Lu Wei swallowed the water and chuckled. “I was thirsty too couldn’t resist taking a sip first. Did you think I was going to feed you mouth-to-mouth?”
“You cough, cough.”
“Alright, alright, I was just joking.” Lu Wei hurriedly patted her back to calm her down, though her laughter didn’t stop. “Here, drink slowly.”
“Take it away. I don’t want it after you drank from it,” Chen Yushu said weakly.
“What if I spit into it right now?” Lu Wei threatened. “Daring to dislike me?””
Chen Yushu’s brows slowly furrowed. “Lu Wei, you’re disgusting.”
“Your voice is already this hoarse talk less.” Lu Wei sat on the edge of the bed and held the bottle to Chen Yushu’s lips. “Drink slowly.”
After gulping down half the bottle, the parched feeling in her throat finally eased. Chen Yushu asked, “Who brought me here? Why are you here?”
“Your roommate found you feverish and unconscious at noon, so she took leave to bring you here,” Lu Wei explained. “I went looking for you during the afternoon break but couldn’t find you anywhere. When I asked around, I found out you were in the hospital, scared me half to death.”
“Oh.”
“The doctor said you’ve been overworked lately, plus excessive worry has let ‘evil energy’ invade your body.” Lu Wei tapped Chen Yushu’s head, recalling the doctor’s words. “What’s there to overthink about a stupid military training?”
Chen Yushu immediately glared at her, unconsciously letting out a bit of personal resentment.
Just then, the IV drip finished, and Lu Wei called the doctor to remove the needle before helping her leave.
After escorting Chen Yushu back to the dormitory entrance, Lu Wei turned around and headed to the cafeteria to buy food.
When Chen Yushu pushed open the door, she found only Jiang Yuran inside. Seeing her return, Jiang Yuran quickly set down her makeup brush and stood up to help.
Chen Yushu waved her off. “I’m fine, I feel much better now. Thank you for today, I really appreciate it.”
“It was no trouble at all.” Jiang Yuran blinked. “We even got to skip half a day of training because of it. A win-win, really.”
Hearing this, Chen Yushu let out a soft laugh, her guilt easing a little. “By the way, where are the other two?”
“They went to eat.” Jiang Yuran continued applying her eyeliner as she spoke. “Oh, and we already got you excused from training tomorrow. You can just rest in the dorm.”
Chen Yushu was about to express her thanks when she suddenly heard an unfamiliar female voice.
“Who are you talking to?”
It must be Jiang Yuran on a phone call.
“Of course, my roommate. Who else?” Jiang Yuran turned her head to reply, her voice softening slightly, as if murmuring coquettishly, “Are you an idiot?”
Chen Yushu shifted her focus back to herself, planning to text Lu Wei to ask her to buy less food.
Just then, she felt someone gently poke her back.
Jiang Yuran was half-squatting, her gaze level with Chen Yushu’s. “Shushu, can you check if my eyeliner and eyebrows are symmetrical?”
“Mm, let me see.” Chen Yushu widened her eyes and carefully compared. “The left eyebrow is a bit lower, but everything else looks fine.”
“Ah!” Jiang Yuran immediately groaned, then suddenly added, “Shushu, I have a date later and might come back a little late. Can you leave the door unlocked for me? Please?”
Chen Yushu: “Sure, no problem.”
“Yay, thanks, Shushu!” Jiang Yuran happily bounced back to her original spot. After hearing something from the other end of the line, she pouted, “Ugh, stop rushing me. I’m coming down now.”
A moment later, Jiang Yuran picked up her bag and waved at Chen Yushu. “Shushu, I’m off. Bye!”
“Bye.”
The dorm room fell silent. Chen Yushu tilted her head, feeling like something was off just now.
A date?
Do friends call hanging out a “date”?
Before she could figure it out, a knock at the door interrupted her thoughts. “Come in.”
Lu Wei walked in slowly, carrying food, her expression odd as she stared at Chen Yushu.
Chen Yushu frowned. “What’s up with you?”
Lu Wei: “What’s your roommate going out for?”
“A date. Did you run into her on the way?”
“A date? Then why was she still with you.” Lu Wei’s eyes widened in shock.
Chen Yushu was baffled by the question and grew impatient. “What are you trying to say?”
Lu Wei set the food on the table, leaned on the chair’s armrests, and drawled, “I just saw you two kissing at the door.”
Now it was Chen Yushu’s turn to be shocked. “What are you talking about?”
Lu Wei studied her expression carefully before sighing. “Fine, I must’ve seen wrong.”
“You’re insane!”
Lu Wei pouted and grumbled, “From that angle, it really looked like it. Scared the hell out of me when I saw it.”
“Really?” Chen Yushu’s mind stirred, and she couldn’t help probing. “What was so scary about it?”
“Everything was scary!” Lu Wei exclaimed, counting on her fingers. “Two girls alone, in a dorm, kissing and one of them is you. Every part of that is explosive!”
Chen Yushu raised an eyebrow. “Is it? I think Jiang Yuran’s pretty cute good looking and nice personality.”
“Is that the point?” Lu Wei asked, confused, eyeing Chen Yushu with scrutiny. “Wait, you’re not actually into her, are you?”
“Nope.” Chen Yushu shrugged, unfazed, and countered, “Why are you so worked up? Are you homophobic?”
Lu Wei shook her head in frustration and sighed. “It’s just that Wen Yan traumatized me. I don’t mind watching others get together, but if it happened to me, I couldn’t handle it. I’m not into girls, after all.”
Although she had mentally prepared herself, Chen Yushu still felt a dull ache in her chest when she heard Lu Wei say those words. Fortunately, her expression remained calm enough to respond naturally, “Oh, I see.”
“What about you?”
Caught off guard by Lu Wei’s counter question, Chen Yushu paused briefly. “Huh? Oh, I guess I’m the same as you.”
Lu Wei immediately sighed in relief. “Whew, that’s good.”
Chen Yushu lowered her eyes to conceal the fleeting sadness that flashed across them. “Let’s eat. What did you buy? There’s so much.”
“Not that much. My portion is included too.”
Hearing this, Chen Yushu shifted her chair slightly. “Then go grab another chair.”
“No need, I’ll just squeeze in with you.” As she spoke, Lu Wei perched half her body onto the chair. “Scoot over a bit.”
“Lu Wei, you’re so annoying.”
Just as they were eating, Ye Chiwan and Xia Ke returned.
“Shushu, are you feeling better?” Ye Chiwan walked over and placed a few pears and peaches on her desk. “These are cooling and rich in vitamin C. Good for you.”
Chen Yushu always felt a bit awkward when receiving kindness from others and could only manage a quiet “thank you.”
Lu Wei, on the other hand, was completely different. She picked up a pear and took a bite. “So sweet! Thanks! And thanks for looking out for Shushu. I’ll treat you all to a meal someday you better come.”
“Tch, ‘looking out for Shushu’? Anyone would think you’re someone special to her,” Ye Chiwan teased. “Don’t worry, we won’t hold back.”
Lu Wei threw an arm around Chen Yushu. “Oh no, Chen Yushu, your identity as my little sweetheart is out in the open now.”
Chen Yushu smacked her hand away. “Get lost.”
After the meal, Lu Wei leaned back in her chair, one leg draped over Chen Yushu’s lap, idly scrolling through her phone. Suddenly, she made a disapproving sound and stood up. “Little Shushu, I’m off.”
Chen Yushu hummed in acknowledgment, watching her hurried departure and thinking to herself, It must be about that person again.
[Where is Lu Wei now?]
[Are you with her?]
[Does she have another phone number?]
Chen Yushu had just picked up her phone after showering when she saw these abrupt messages from Wen Yan. Frowning in displeasure, she replied with a question mark.
Wen Yan: [Is Lu Wei with you?]
Chen Yushu stared expressionlessly at the screen for a moment before setting the phone aside and picking up a towel to dry her hair.
Messages continued to pop up one after another, betraying the sender’s impatience.
This was between the two of them. Chen Yushu didn’t understand why Wen Yan was reaching out to her, and for the time being, she had no intention of engaging.
However, to her surprise, Wen Yan actually called a few minutes later.
The sound of the default WeChat ringtone grated on her nerves. Chen Yushu disliked social interactions aside from a select few close friends, she had an innate aversion to phone calls, especially from someone like Wen Yan, whom she barely knew.
She picked up the phone and immediately hung up, feeling a surge of irritation at the intrusion. Typing angrily, she replied: [I don’t know. If you want to find out, ask Lu Wei yourself.]
The screen immediately showed “typing.” but no message came through for a while.
Chen Yushu slowly calmed the anger rising in her chest, deciding to just let Lu Wei handle it herself.
Just then, Wen Yan’s message finally arrived: [Lu Wei blocked me. I still have things I need to say to her.]
Chen Yushu’s fingers paused as she stared blankly at the messages from Wen Yan. She had thought that as a romantic rival of sorts, she should feel happy seeing Wen Yan and Lu Wei fall out.
But when this moment actually arrived, she couldn’t help feeling a pang of shock, her hands and feet turning icy cold.
It seemed Lu Wei really cared about this matter.
When she came back to her senses, she noticed Wen Yan had sent several more messages.
[Does she have any other contact methods? Please share them with me.]
[If you’re free tomorrow, could you bring her to the place we last met?]
Chen Yushu bit her lip impatiently and replied bluntly: [This is between you two. It has nothing to do with me. Don’t involve me anymore.]
Wen Yan: [If I could find someone else, would I be asking you?]
Chen Yushu felt a surge of anger rise within her. [Then let me be clear, I won’t tell you anything.]
[Heh, I get it. You’d love it if I never found Lu Wei again, wouldn’t you?]
[I bet Lu Wei has no idea you like her.]
[Would you even dare to tell her?]
[I’m really curious how Lu Wei would react if she found out. Would you end up just like me?]
