How Could a Scumbag Alpha Possibly Love His Wife? - Chapter 93
Cheng Wan was sitting quietly beside them, eating her food. When she heard Bai Juntang ask her a question, she only glanced up briefly before lowering her head again.
“I don’t really understand these things. You two can make the arrangements,” she said softly.
Bai Weilan also looked at her, gently stirring her soup with a small spoon, but didn’t say anything.
“I still don’t want the full-month celebration to be too lively,” Bai Juntang continued, seeing that Cheng Wan had no objections. She turned to Bai Weilan and said, “Let’s just invite our regular partners and close friends. Do you think we can cut it down to around seventy people?”
“No way. Even if we trim the list, it’ll still be at least ninety guests.”
Bai Juntang frowned slightly. No matter how she tried to shorten the guest list, it seemed that both the important and less important people still had to be invited. After doing all the calculations and revisions, the number still hovered around a hundred. In the end, she and Bai Weilan decided to book a banquet hall that could hold up to two hundred guests for Sui Sui’s full-month party. As for how many people would actually attend, they’d just have to wait and see on the day.
While the two discussed the details in low voices, Cheng Wan quietly ate her food at a slow, steady pace.
After dinner, Aunt Pei came over to clear the table. When she saw how much food Cheng Wan had left uneaten, she frowned and quickly stopped Bai Juntang from leaving.
“Juntang, is something wrong with Wanwan lately?” Aunt Pei asked with concern. “She used to eat and drink well. What’s going on these days? She can’t even finish one bowl of rice. Look at how much she left tonight. That means she basically didn’t eat anything for dinner.”
Only then did Bai Juntang realize how little Cheng Wan had eaten. In fact, this wasn’t the first time, but today it was especially noticeable.
“Maybe the food just doesn’t suit her taste anymore,” Bai Juntang tried to reassure her. “Her appetite has changed since giving birth to Sui Sui. Aunt Pei, could you prepare some light snacks? I’m worried she’ll get hungry later and have nothing to eat.”
Aunt Pei sighed and went to the kitchen pantry. She returned with some small cookies and fried dough twists. As she handed them to Bai Juntang, she added, “If she gets hungry later, just call me. There are plenty of ingredients in the fridge. I can make her a sandwich.”
Bai Juntang nodded and carried the small bag of snacks upstairs.
After dinner, Cheng Wan sat at the small desk in their bedroom and opened her laptop.
She didn’t even know what she was supposed to do, but having nothing to do every day made her feel anxious. Whenever she had too much free time, her mind would wander back to that day in the study, when she accidentally overheard what Bai Juntang had said.
Cheng Wan knew she was seen as useless. As an Omega, people often believed she was only good for giving birth and nothing else.
When Bai Juntang entered the room, she saw Cheng Wan staring blankly at her laptop screen. It wasn’t until Cheng Wan turned around that Bai Juntang spoke.
“You didn’t eat much dinner, did you? Aunt Pei scolded me for not taking better care of you.”
She walked over and placed the bag of snacks on the desk. Then she looked down at Cheng Wan and asked gently,
“Is something bothering you lately? You haven’t been eating well. If this goes on, your health is going to suffer.”
Cheng Wan looked up at her, pressed her lips together, and shook her head. She clearly had no intention of speaking.
Bai Juntang had never seen Cheng Wan like this before. Even when they had just met, Cheng Wan would still talk to her. But now, she didn’t even want to say a word.
“Cheng Wan,” Bai Juntang said, bending down slightly and gently touching her cheek. Her voice was soft. “You heard the conversation I had with my mom about the full-month banquet. I’ll be busy in the coming days. If I don’t notice how you’re feeling, you have to let me know, okay?”
Cheng Wan kept her eyes lowered and didn’t look at her.
Bai Juntang sighed silently in her heart. As she touched Cheng Wan’s face, she could feel how much weight she had lost. The softness she had gained during pregnancy was nearly gone. Cheng Wan, who used to be radiant, now looked tired and lifeless, like a flower that had withered. Seeing her like this made Bai Juntang’s heart ache.
“I need to run some errands tomorrow. The weather is nice. Do you want to come out with me for a bit?”
“Go out?” Cheng Wan looked up at her and asked, “Can I?”
Bai Juntang couldn’t help but smile.
“Of course you can. It’s not like I’ve locked you up. You were still recovering before, and I didn’t want you to catch a cold, so I didn’t let you go out. But now that Sui Sui is one month old, if you want to get some fresh air, I’ll take you.”
Cheng Wan hadn’t left the house in a long time. She had been cooped up during her entire pregnancy too. Now, hearing that she could go outside, she was genuinely excited.
“Wouldn’t it be inconvenient if I went with you?” she asked, still unsure. “Is it okay if I tag along?”
Bai Juntang replied,
“I just need to confirm the banquet hall. I was going to ask Li Chen to handle it, but since it’s for Sui Sui’s full-month celebration, I want to take care of it myself. If you come with me, we can choose the best place together.”
Cheng Wan’s eyes lit up at her words.
“Then I want to go too.”
Seeing her show interest in something for once, Bai Juntang looked into Cheng Wan’s bright eyes and couldn’t resist leaning in to kiss her gently on the lips.
Cheng Wan froze slightly at the touch, but Bai Juntang didn’t try to deepen the kiss. She just gave her a soft peck, then pulled away and said,
“Alright then, tomorrow we’ll go check out the banquet halls together.”
Now that Cheng Wan had agreed, Bai Juntang finally felt a little better. She sat beside her and watched her finish the snacks.
The next morning, Cheng Wan woke up early. Bai Juntang didn’t sleep in either. After narrowing down a few familiar banquet halls, she took Cheng Wan out with her.
Li Chen, whom they hadn’t seen in a while, was standing beside the car. When he saw them coming, he greeted them warmly.
“Good morning, Director Bai, Miss Cheng.”
“Good morning,” Cheng Wan replied. She had actually missed seeing Li Chen and couldn’t help glancing at him a couple of times while sitting in the backseat with Bai Juntang.
As he drove, Li Chen joked,
“What’s wrong? Do I have something on my face today?”
Cheng Wan blushed a little.
“Sorry, it’s just that I haven’t seen you in a while. It looks like you got a bit tanned.”
Li Chen laughed and said,
“I just got back from a short vacation. Probably got some sun. Autumn weather is perfect for traveling.”
Cheng Wan glanced at Bai Juntang and softly replied with a quiet “mm,” then didn’t say anything more.
Bai Juntang and Li Chen had already confirmed a few hotel venues. They were all familiar partners they had worked with in the past, although mostly for business events. This was the first time they were preparing for a full-month celebration, so they had to visit different halls to see which would be best.
“The hotel manager just sent over a few options for halls that can fit more than two hundred guests,” Li Chen said. “The photos are here if you’d like to take a look, Director Bai.”
Bai Juntang took the tablet and looked through the photos. A few of them showed warm and lovely setups that seemed perfect for a birthday or a full-month celebration. The hotel also offered flexible decorations based on the guests’ preferences for the day.
Soon, the three of them arrived at the hotel. The manager had been waiting and came over quickly to greet them, then led Bai Juntang and Cheng Wan to visit several halls.
This hotel mainly hosted banquets and events, so it had a wide variety of rooms—over a dozen of all different sizes. Today, the manager showed them a few of the smaller halls, and Bai Juntang found one or two that seemed just right.
After visiting three different hotels, Bai Juntang had made up her mind. She and Cheng Wan decided on a birthday-style banquet hall. The hotel manager promised that everything would be arranged perfectly when the time came.
They had lunch at the hotel, sampling the set menu, which basically confirmed the final decision. The only things left were Sui Sui’s photos and some additional decoration details. These would be handled by designated staff and coordinated with Li Chen. Bai Juntang and Cheng Wan just needed to review the plan a day in advance. Other than that, there wasn’t much left for them to worry about.
Originally, Bai Juntang had planned to take Cheng Wan out for a bit in the afternoon. The botanical garden was especially beautiful in the fall. But then something urgent came up at the company.
“It seems there’s a problem with one of the partnership projects. It’s pretty tricky,” Li Chen explained to Bai Juntang. “I think we need to head to the office now. Should we bring Miss Cheng too?”
Bai Juntang thought for a moment. She’d be stuck in meetings for the rest of the day, and who knew how long they’d last? If Cheng Wan went with her, she’d just be sitting around doing nothing.
“Maybe we could take a detour and…”
“I can head back on my own,” Cheng Wan interrupted gently.
She looked at the two of them, clearly busy and in a hurry, and said, “It’s not far from here. I can grab a taxi home. You two go ahead.”
Bai Juntang didn’t hesitate long before agreeing. She told Cheng Wan, “Text me when you get home. I’m heading to the office first.”
Cheng Wan nodded and watched as Bai Juntang and Li Chen left the hotel.
It didn’t make much sense to just sit there in the hotel lobby, so Cheng Wan slowly got up and walked toward the elevator.
Since she was already out for the day, she thought it might be a good chance to meet a few friends. She could also take the opportunity to tell them about Sui Sui’s upcoming full-month celebration.
But the truth was, Cheng Wan had always been a bit distant, even back in school. After starting work, she made even fewer close connections. Now she was suddenly thinking about inviting people to a baby’s celebration, and she wasn’t sure if it would just scare them off.
As she was lost in thought, heading toward the elevator, two professionally dressed individuals walked ahead of her. They were both wearing suits and carrying briefcases.
While they waited for the elevator, they began chatting casually.
“Do you think that Omega in this divorce case has any chance of winning?”
“Not likely. Omegas don’t have much of an advantage when it comes to divorce. The state’s focused on boosting birth rates, so the divorce process is extremely strict. She probably won’t be able to leave.”
“Poor kid. I heard the Alpha in that case is loaded, but really sly. Apparently, there was a prenup, and if the Omega goes through with the divorce, not only does she get nothing, she has to pay him millions in compensation.”
“That’s why it’s better not to take on these kinds of cases. It’s hard for Omegas to get divorced. There are too many legal hoops. Without an Alpha, they can barely get by, especially if they’ve already had children.”
“Whether in the workplace or at home, Omegas are at a huge disadvantage. Honestly, I just hope my wife isn’t carrying an Omega. That would break my heart.”
Ding—
The elevator doors slowly opened. The two men who had just been talking stepped inside. Cheng Wan remained where she was, gripping her bag tightly.
One of the men noticed she wasn’t moving and held the elevator door open. He looked her over and asked with concern,
“Miss, are you alright? Are you getting in?”
Cheng Wan slowly lifted her head and looked at the two men, who seemed to be lawyers. She gently shook her head. The two exchanged a glance but didn’t ask any more questions. They let the elevator doors close.
Cheng Wan stood there, still in place, the words she had just overheard echoing in her mind. Her heart felt heavy.
Divorce…
Was that really the only ending?
