How Could a Scumbag Alpha Possibly Love His Wife? - Chapter 56
The six-month checkup went more smoothly than expected. Dr. Huang reviewed the test report calmly, writing something as she read. Only when she finished did she look up at Cheng Wan and ask, “Have things been a bit tough lately?”
Cheng Wan nodded, gently touching her belly as she replied in a low voice, “It’s been really hot lately. I wake up once or twice almost every night.”
She had tried cooling down with some cold drinks, but the relief never lasted long. Before she knew it, she would wake up again from the heat. Over the past couple of nights, she had barely gotten any proper sleep.
Dr. Huang nodded and said, “That’s normal. If it gets too hot, have something cold to cool off. But if you feel any worse, come back to the hospital. At this stage, I won’t be prescribing any medication.”
She then glanced at Bai Juntang, who was standing nearby, and said with a meaningful tone, “The alpha needs to take good care of her omega, understand?”
Of course, Bai Juntang understood. Her face turned red with embarrassment. She simply nodded and gave a quiet “mm” without saying anything more.
As they walked out of the hospital, Cheng Wan noticed Bai Juntang’s expression didn’t look quite right. She asked, confused, “What’s wrong? You don’t look so good.”
Bai Juntang turned to look at Cheng Wan and saw her staring with an innocent, puzzled expression. That made her irritation rise up even more.
She held it in and replied with a strange look on her face, “It’s nothing. Maybe it’s just too hot.”
Cheng Wan paused for a moment and then said, “I’ll go alone for the next checkup.”
“Don’t say that,” Bai Juntang said as she held Cheng Wan’s hand and led her toward the parking lot. “How can I let you go by yourself in your condition? I already told you, I’ll be with you for the next few months. You just need to take care of yourself, eat well, and rest.”
Cheng Wan felt warmth spreading in her heart as Bai Juntang held her hand. It felt like something was about to overflow from deep inside.
She looked down at their hands and nodded. “Okay.”
There were less than four months left until her due date. She had to take responsibility for herself and the baby.
When Bai Juntang drove Cheng Wan home, it was a little past eleven in the morning. As they passed by the neighboring villa, they could hear loud renovation noises. After parking the car, Bai Juntang glanced over. The buzzing sound of electric drills filled the air.
Aunt Pei was in the yard hanging laundry. When she saw them return, she walked over.
“You’re back,” she said as she helped Cheng Wan out of the car. “How was the checkup? Everything alright?”
Cheng Wan nodded. “Everything’s fine. The doctor told me to get more rest.”
“She didn’t say why you’ve been feeling so hot all the time?”
“She said it’s normal. It should pass soon.”
After hearing that, Aunt Pei felt reassured. She took Cheng Wan’s hand and said, “I’ve got some chilled water in the fridge. Drink some if you feel hot.”
Cheng Wan nodded and said, “Could we chill some soda water instead? Plain water doesn’t have much taste.”
“Sure. I’ll chill two bottles for you today. But don’t drink too much, okay?”
As Cheng Wan and Aunt Pei walked into the house, Bai Juntang looked one more time at the villa under renovation. In the end, she chose not to argue about it.
Once inside, the noise became much quieter, and Bai Juntang could tolerate it a bit more.
Cheng Wan sat by the front door to change her shoes. Aunt Pei, who had trouble squatting because of her age, stood nearby as Cheng Wan slipped off her sneakers and put on her non-slip slippers.
Their cat, Guazi, lay sprawled on the floor enjoying the cool air from the air conditioner. Cheng Wan wanted to pick it up, but her belly made it too difficult to bend down.
Just as she was about to give up, Bai Juntang came up behind her, picked up the little kitten rolling around on the floor, and placed it gently into her arms.
“Here,” Bai Juntang said as she looked down at Cheng Wan. “Play for a bit, then wash your hands. It’ll be time to eat soon.”
Cheng Wan nodded with her round belly and carried the kitten over to the sofa.
Seeing them so happy, Aunt Pei smiled and said, “Isn’t this nice? Once the baby is born, the house will be even more lively.”
Bai Juntang glanced at Cheng Wan and said to Aunt Pei, “The due date is in November. Let’s hire two postpartum nannies. I’m afraid you’ll be too busy.”
“We don’t need that many. One will be enough,” Aunt Pei said. “I still have some strength. I can take care of Wanwan. The nanny can just look after the baby.”
Still, Bai Juntang thought it would be best to arrange things a few months ahead of time. She left the task to Aunt Pei and asked her to try to find two if possible. After giving birth, an omega’s body is usually weaker than others. Bai Juntang didn’t want to take any chances with illness or fatigue.
The weekend passed peacefully. Cheng Wan, sensitive to heat, kept the air conditioning on low all the time. Aunt Pei had even started wearing autumn clothes indoors. Although Bai Juntang didn’t complain, she had wrapped herself tightly in a small shawl.
The renovation noise next door wasn’t very noticeable with the air conditioner on, but sometimes Bai Juntang would glance out the window, still wondering who the new neighbor might be.
But those little details didn’t matter much compared to the more important news she had received.
The project that Cheng Jiajian had snatched from her had started running into problems. He had been overly confident and poured all his assets into it without thinking. Word had spread that the project was now in trouble. It wouldn’t be long before the Cheng family went completely bankrupt.
Whenever Bai Juntang thought about how the Cheng family had set her up, she felt they were only getting what they deserved. She could accept the tricks people played in business, but not being treated like a fool.
Life seemed calmer than she had expected. She knew the Cheng family was already bankrupt, but she didn’t know why Cheng Jiajian still hadn’t come to confront her.
In fact, she was looking forward to that moment. She wanted to see him furious and powerless. However he had plotted against her back then, she would return it in full.
On the first workday of the week, Cheng Wan went to the office early.
Today was the release day for the Advertising Department’s magazine interview sample issue. Just as Cheng Wan passed by the front desk, the receptionist called out to her.
“Cheng Wan, you have a delivery,” the receptionist said, handing her a file envelope. “It should be the sample issue from the magazine company. Take a look and see.”
Cheng Wan’s eyes lit up when she heard that. She quickly opened the envelope and pulled out a sample copy of the magazine.
The magazine still carried the fresh scent of ink from the press. Cheng Wan took in the smell, thinking it was pleasant, then flipped it open to look at the contents.
This was her first time participating in a magazine layout and production. The final printed version looked much better than it did on the computer. It felt solid and weighty in her hands, bringing a deep sense of satisfaction.
“Thank you,” Cheng Wan said to the receptionist as she hugged the magazine and returned to her desk.
Chang Le, who rarely came in early, saw Cheng Wan carrying the magazine and asked curiously, “What’s that?”
“It’s the sample issue from the collaboration between the Advertising Department and the magazine company. They sent one to me,” Cheng Wan explained, placing the magazine on her desk. “There should be a few more copies sent to other departments. I only got one here.”
Chang Le leaned over for a look, flipping through the pages. “How did I not realize before? Wanwan, you’ve got a real talent for design. This layout is beautiful.”
Cheng Wan smiled. She also thought it looked good. At the very least, she was satisfied with what she had done.
It wasn’t easy for an Omega to survive in the workplace. Cheng Wan didn’t expect to achieve great success like Bai Juntang in a big company, but she could at least do her job well. That way, she wouldn’t have to worry about making a living.
As more colleagues arrived at the office, Cheng Wan’s phone on her desk suddenly rang.
She glanced at the screen and saw it was an unfamiliar number. Thinking it might be work-related, perhaps someone from the Advertising Department asking about the samples, she didn’t hesitate and picked up the call, softly saying, “Hello?”
There was silence on the other end, except for the sound of heavy breathing. The person seemed to be struggling through some kind of pain.
“Cheng Wan…”
It was a woman’s voice, calling her name through clenched teeth. The moment she heard it, a chill ran down Cheng Wan’s back, and her hand began to tremble.
“Mom?” she asked, her face turning pale as she sat in her chair, clutching the phone. “Is that you?”
“Who else would it be?” came Xu He’s hoarse and bitter voice. “You’ve ruined us.”
Cheng Wan had no idea what was happening. Holding the phone, she felt a growing sense of unease in her chest.
Xu He suddenly shouted into the phone, her voice full of fury, “The Cheng family never treated you badly. How could you join forces with Bai Juntang to harm us? That five-star hotel investment was a setup, wasn’t it? You two planned it all. Now we’ve lost everything. Is this what you wanted?”
Cheng Wan recognized every word, but together, they made no sense to her.
Join forces with Bai Juntang to harm them?
What five-star hotel project?
And from the sound of it, the Cheng family had gone bankrupt?
She couldn’t process everything at once. Her ears filled with Xu He’s yelling and insults, taking her back to childhood. Back then, whenever she did something wrong, Xu He would scold her the same way.
Only this time, the words were far more vicious.
“No wonder your parents abandoned you,” Xu He cursed. “A heartless creature like you shouldn’t have been born. You and that cursed thing in your belly will never end well.”
Cheng Wan felt her breath tighten. She clutched her chest in pain as her phone slipped from her hand and fell to the floor with a loud thud.
Chang Le, who had been chatting nearby, turned around at the sound. She saw Cheng Wan holding her chest, her face deathly pale and covered in sweat.
“What happened?” Chang Le asked in shock. Just moments ago, Cheng Wan had seemed fine. Now she looked like a completely different person.
At that moment, the office’s pheromone alarm suddenly went off. The buzzing sound startled everyone.
The alarm was triggered by pheromone leakage. The expressions on everyone’s faces changed, and a few people called out, “Whose heat cycle is starting?”
It was Chang Le’s first time encountering something like this. As a Beta, she couldn’t smell pheromones, but when she noticed several Alpha colleagues staring in their direction with bloodshot eyes, her heart dropped.
No way, could Cheng Wan be going into heat?
Cheng Wan still had a bit of awareness left. With hazy eyes, she reached out to grab Chang Le’s arm and whispered, “Call… Bai Juntang…”
