How Could a Scumbag Alpha Possibly Love His Wife? - Chapter 49
If you asked what Mu Ruchu had been up to lately, it wouldn’t be something you could explain in just a few sentences.
After leaving the racing club, she followed the racing circuit around the world. At nearly every competition, she sat in the stands, watching the racers tear across the tracks—some familiar, others not. There were rival drivers she’d once exchanged heated words with, people she knew and people she didn’t.
But none of that mattered to Mu Ruchu anymore. After the federation’s so-called “careful selection,” only Alpha drivers were allowed to remain on the track.
She followed the circuit for over three months and had only recently returned to China.
Qian Gu Racing Club had been struggling even before she left. There were already few professional racers in the country, and once she quit, the club essentially collapsed. Aside from the occasional domestic race, they lost over 90% of their sponsorship deals. If it weren’t for Bai Juntang’s deep pockets, the club wouldn’t have lasted at all.
Mu Ruchu knew her sudden departure had been a blow to the club, but she still didn’t have the courage to face people again. Even after returning, she hadn’t contacted Bai Juntang.
She couldn’t just sit around forever, though. So she changed identities—pretending to be an Alpha—and went back to doing what she did best: driving.
Only this time, she wasn’t racing. She was working as a private driver for a high-powered executive who had just returned to China.
Today, she’d brought her boss to this interview shoot. While waiting, she wandered around the photography studio—and unexpectedly picked up a very familiar scent.
Bai Juntang had left her pheromones on Cheng Wan before leaving, and Omega senses were especially sharp when it came to scent. One sniff was enough for Mu Ruchu to recognize the trace.
She looked over at Cheng Wan sitting on a chair—slim waist, long legs, round and tidy little bump—and could more or less guess who it was.
Technically speaking, she should be calling Cheng Wan “Mrs. Boss.”
But one thing puzzled her: it wasn’t hot or sunny in the studio, so why was Cheng Wan wearing a mask indoors?
Cheng Wan was focused on the stage. The host was chatting humorously with a long-haired woman under the lights, but the sound wasn’t very clear from her distance, and she didn’t notice anyone walking over.
“Mind if I sit here?” a calm voice asked beside her.
Cheng Wan turned and saw a tall woman standing next to her, holding a bottle of sparkling water.
Mu Ruchu wore her usual look—tight T-shirt and baggy work pants—and didn’t wait for a reply before pulling over a stool and sitting down. She held out the cold peach-flavored sparkling water. “You looked bored sitting here alone. Have a drink.”
“Thanks.” Cheng Wan wasn’t good at turning down kindness. She took the cold bottle, though something about the flavor choice made her pause. It felt… intentional.
Pssst—
Mu Ruchu cracked open her own drink. The carbonation bubbled up quickly but fizzled out just as fast.
Cheng Wan watched her take a long sip, then asked, “Are you part of the crew here?”
“No.” Mu Ruchu pointed toward the woman onstage. “That’s my boss. I’m her driver.”
Cheng Wan nodded, not really sure how to continue the conversation.
But Mu Ruchu was clearly interested. She rested her chin on her hand and tilted her head. “How far along are you?”
Cheng Wan paused, glanced down at her belly, and replied softly, “A little over five months.”
“Wow, already that far?” Mu Ruchu was surprised. She remembered hearing about the pregnancy early on—maybe around two months. Now five?
She looked at Cheng Wan’s round belly with a hint of envy and said, “You look great. Must mean the baby’s doing well.”
“Yes. Everything’s been normal so far. All the checkups have gone smoothly.”
“Did you find out the baby’s gender?”
Cheng Wan hesitated, then said quietly, “No. I… didn’t want to.”
Mu Ruchu looked at her for a while, then apologized softly, “Sorry, I didn’t mean to pry.”
“It’s okay,” Cheng Wan said. “The doctor suggested we check, but she said she didn’t care about that—just that the baby’s healthy. And I feel the same way. As long as it’s born safe, I’ll be happy.”
Mu Ruchu thought for a moment and said, “Your Alpha must really love you.”
This time, Cheng Wan didn’t respond. She just gently stroked her belly, falling into a long silence.
They didn’t speak again. They hadn’t even exchanged names.
Eventually, the woman onstage finished her interview and began talking with the studio manager. Mu Ruchu stood up and walked over.
“Send the final draft to my secretary’s email before it goes to print,” the elegant woman said to the manager. “I just got back to the country—I don’t want any misquotes. I hope you understand.”
The manager nodded quickly. “Of course, President Chi. We’re a reputable publication. Not only will we send it for your approval, but we’ll also mail you a few sample copies. If anything needs changing, we’ll make it happen.”
Chi Mu didn’t trust these types—always agreeable on the surface but never reliable. She hated smooth-talking men like this.
Absolutely disgusting.
From a short distance away, Mu Ruchu watched. Chi Mu turned to the manager and said, “Then I’ll wait for your email. We’re heading out now.”
“Have a great day, President Chi!” the manager said eagerly.
The poised, stylish woman walked up to Mu Ruchu and said, “Go pull the car around to the front. It’s blazing hot outside—I don’t want to roast. Park in the shade. I’m wearing heels. Don’t make me walk too far.”
Mu Ruchu nodded. Her boss was extremely picky—neat freak, dramatic, easily annoyed. The company had already gone through a dozen drivers and assistants because of her. Mu Ruchu had only just started. Who knew how long she’d last?
As she left to bring the car around, she glanced back and saw Cheng Wan take off her mask to sip her drink.
That’s when she saw it—clearly.
The swollen cheek. The red handprint that hadn’t yet faded.
What the hell happened?
Mu Ruchu lingered for another second, then turned to leave, frowning.
Does Bai Juntang know her wife got hit?
And if she does… how can she still let her go to work like this?
Could it have been Bai Juntang who hit her?
That didn’t seem right. Bai Juntang didn’t strike her as the type to commit domestic violence…
Mu Ruchu couldn’t make sense of it, so she pushed the thought aside for now. Following Chi Mu’s instructions, she drove the car to a shaded spot so the refined and elegant woman wouldn’t be touched by even a sliver of sunlight. Then, they hit the road.
From the back seat, Chi Mu let out a cold laugh. “Xiao Mu, I didn’t take you for someone who’s into that kind of Omega.”
Mu Ruchu glanced at her through the rearview mirror, not quite following. “What do you mean, President Chi?”
“When we walked out, I noticed you kept staring at that Omega guarding the equipment.” Chi Mu crossed her legs and folded her arms, smirking. “Come on, we Alphas still have dignity, right? Sure, she’s got the looks, but she’s heavily pregnant. You’re really into that?”
Mu Ruchu felt like she and this woman were on completely different wavelengths. Watching the side mirrors, she replied calmly, “We happen to know the same person. That’s all. I wasn’t looking for any reason.”
Chi Mu waved a dismissive hand. “You’re an Alpha—so what if you looked at an Omega? It’s not like I said anything bad.”
Mu Ruchu said nothing.
But Chi Mu wasn’t finished. “Still, when you’re working, I’d appreciate it if you focused a bit more on the job. I get it—fragile little Omegas can be tempting—but I’d rather you saved that energy for driving.”
Mu Ruchu sighed. “President Chi…”
Chi Mu, assuming she was about to be contradicted, lifted a hand to cut her off. “Save it. I know I’ve just come back from overseas and might not get all the local customs yet, but as an Alpha, you should at least carry yourself with some class. Don’t go around making googly eyes at people.”
Googly eyes?
Mu Ruchu frowned. Was she seriously talking about me?
“President Chi,” she said evenly, “I was going to point out that the black sedan behind us has been tailing us since we left. Do you recognize it?”
Chi Mu froze for a second, then turned her head. When she spotted the car, her brows knit together.
“It’s them again.” She looked irritated. “Can you lose them? Take the side streets—I don’t want them following me all the way home.”
Mu Ruchu gave a quiet, “Mm.” One hand on the wheel, the other on the gearshift, she didn’t even look like she was doing anything special—yet Chi Mu suddenly felt herself thrown back against the seat.
Vrrroooom—
The black car behind them darted through traffic like a shadow, but Mu Ruchu weaved through the lanes just as smoothly. Watching the speedometer hit 150 km/h, she called back, “President Chi, please fasten your seatbelt. I’m going to speed up.”
Speed up?
Chi Mu gripped the seatbelt in shock. They were already flying—what more did she mean by speeding up? Was she planning to take off?!
“Take it easy!” she shouted, clutching the handle above the window. “Their driver is a retired racer! I said take a side street—not drive like you’re on a racetrack!”
Mu Ruchu glanced in the rearview mirror at the car still hot on their tail and said calmly, “Retired racer? That’s nothing special.”
As she finished speaking, Chi Mu suddenly felt like they were airborne.
She instantly regretted ever telling this Alpha to “shake them off.” So what if they found her home address? At least she’d be alive. If this kept up, she wasn’t sure she’d live to complain!
Before she could yell for her to stop, she saw the drawbridge up ahead beginning to close—its barrier arms lowering, the platform starting to lift.
“No! Stop!” she shouted.
“Okay,” Mu Ruchu replied lightly.
Then she floored it.
Chi Mu’s mind went blank as the car surged forward, shooting through the narrowing gap just as the barrier dropped.
Forget her—everyone was stunned.
The black car chasing them had to stop at the barrier, while its passengers—and a growing crowd of onlookers—stood in awe, watching Chi Mu’s black sedan soar across the rising drawbridge like something straight out of an action movie.
The feeling of weightlessness made Chi Mu feel like she’d already died. When they landed with a thud, she forgot how to breathe.
Mu Ruchu eased off the gas and drove at a calm pace, glancing back at her nearly traumatized boss.
“President Chi,” she said gently.
Chi Mu finally snapped out of it, her legs trembling, mind still blank.
Blank, but not speechless. “I-it was impressive… but also… completely insane…”
She felt like she’d just had a near-death experience. What is wrong with this new driver?! Are Alphas these days all this extreme?!
But Mu Ruchu didn’t seem fazed. After a while, she spoke again, voice level as ever. “President Chi.”
She glanced in the rearview mirror at the pale-faced woman.
“I’d like to ask for some time off.”
