How Could a Scumbag Alpha Possibly Love His Wife? - Chapter 45
“Would you like to find out the baby’s gender?”
As soon as Dr. Huang asked the question, Cheng Wan stiffened. In the dim room, the only sound was the quiet hum of the medical equipment.
If they checked the gender, the baby’s future secondary gender differentiation would also be revealed.
By law, Omegas are not allowed to terminate a pregnancy on their own. Unless the fetus is disabled or shows signs of serious developmental issues, termination requires approval from higher authorities. Otherwise, both the mother and the hospital would be held accountable.
Therefore, checking the baby’s gender and differentiation trends wasn’t illegal here. In fact, some hospitals would even inform parents voluntarily, so they could prepare to welcome a new life.
For most families, this wasn’t a big deal. But for Cheng Wan, it was particularly painful.
She couldn’t remember anything from before the age of three. All her memories began at the orphanage, where nearly all the children were discarded Omegas just like her.
Omegas were far too vulnerable—and because termination wasn’t an option, many parents who didn’t want an Omega child would abandon them at the orphanage door after birth.
Cheng Wan thought, perhaps her birth mother had abandoned her for the same reason—because she was an Omega.
If even ordinary people could be so cold, what about someone like Bai Juntang? Would she also abandon an Omega child like her?
Cheng Wan felt a chill spread through her body. Lying on the examination table, it was as if she were submerged in icy water—so cold she could barely breathe.
If Bai Juntang simply said “check,” Cheng Wan wouldn’t be able to refuse.
After all, the child in her belly had already been “purchased” by Bai Juntang for a hundred million. She had every right to know what it was.
And if it was an Omega?
Lying there, Cheng Wan suddenly felt terrified. If she was carrying an Omega, would Bai Juntang discard it—just like her own mother had discarded her?
Could she beg Bai Juntang? If she didn’t want the baby, could she… let Cheng Wan keep it?
Maybe the atmosphere had gotten too heavy. Dr. Huang and his assistant looked at the two women, puzzled, unsure if he had said something wrong.
“No need.”
Bai Juntang said calmly, “We won’t be checking the baby’s gender.”
The moment she spoke, Cheng Wan’s eyes flew open.
She looked at Bai Juntang, who was standing to the side, and felt something slowly emerge from beneath the surface—something that brought warmth back to her limbs.
Since Bai Juntang had said so, the doctor didn’t push them. After a series of routine tests, the two left Dr. Huang’s office.
It was the weekend, and the hallway was crowded—many pregnant women with round bellies, accompanied by one or two family members, all there for prenatal checkups.
“Why didn’t you want to know the gender?”
Cheng Wan asked as she sat on a bench, turning to Bai Juntang beside her. “Wouldn’t it be better to know early?”
Bai Juntang paused in the middle of organizing her documents. She looked sideways at Cheng Wan and asked in return, “Do you want to know early?”
Cheng Wan couldn’t answer. She lowered her head and gently touched her belly. In a soft voice, she said, “No matter what it is… it doesn’t matter to me.”
“Then it’s the same for me.” Bai Juntang replied calmly, “Whether it’s an Omega or an Alpha, it doesn’t matter—as long as it’s our child.”
As long as it’s our child.
That line left Cheng Wan a bit at a loss. She looked up at Bai Juntang, wanting to argue.
The child in her belly belonged to Bai Juntang. Once it was born, it would have nothing to do with Cheng Wan. Only if Bai Juntang didn’t want the child would Cheng Wan have a chance.
But she couldn’t bring herself to say that. Holding her belly, she simply couldn’t utter something so cruel—something that might break the baby’s heart.
Cheng Wan loved this child, loved it more than anyone else in the world.
Seeing the expression on Cheng Wan’s face, Bai Juntang reached out and gently stroked her cheek. In a soft voice, she said, “With the way you looked at me, how could I agree to check?”
She gently took Cheng Wan’s hand, held her soft palm, and said softly, “You must be hungry. Shall we go eat something? Dr. Huang said today that you’re looking much better, so let’s have something you like for lunch—how about hotpot?”
Cheng Wan looked at her and only nodded after a few seconds. “Okay.”
They had spent the whole morning doing checkups, and since Dr. Huang had complimented Cheng Wan several times on how healthy she looked, Bai Juntang decided to treat her to hotpot—something she had previously forbidden.
When Dr. Huang praised Cheng Wan, Bai Juntang felt even happier than if the compliment had been directed at herself. She was in a great mood. Other than the brief moment when Cheng Wan was a bit upset during the gender check, everything had gone smoothly.
They ordered a “yuan yang” hotpot—a half-spicy, half-clear broth. That was Bai Juntang’s bottom line: a fully spicy pot would be too harsh, and the clear soup was at least gentler on the body.
As the steam curled around them, Bai Juntang said to Cheng Wan, “I’ll be away next Monday.”
Cheng Wan looked up. “A business trip?”
“Mm-hmm.” Bai Juntang placed the sauce she had just mixed in front of Cheng Wan, and even picked out a few meatballs Cheng Wan liked before continuing, “I’ll be gone for about a week. Aunt Pei will take care of you while I’m away. If you need a driver, I can arrange someone to take you to and from work.”
Cheng Wan shook her head. Staring at the glistening beef meatball in her bowl, she said, “It’s only about a twenty-minute walk anyway. I’ll just treat it as a little stroll.”
Bai Juntang looked at her with concern. “Are you sure? Your belly’s quite big now. It’s not easy to get around. I really think it would be better to arrange a driver for you.”
“It’s okay. Actually… I’m not comfortable riding in a stranger’s car.” Cheng Wan glanced at her, then looked down and poked at the cooked meatball. With a soft squish, golden broth oozed out and mixed into the dipping sauce.
Cheng Wan was generally uneasy around strangers. She never chatted with drivers when taking taxis, and it was only recently that she’d gotten used to riding in Bai Juntang’s car. Even when Li Chen drove her, Cheng Wan found it hard to adapt.
“Alright then,” Bai Juntang said with a soft smile as she looked at Cheng Wan. “If you ever need someone to look after you, I’ll make sure it’s arranged.”
Lunch lasted over an hour. Cheng Wan had a decent appetite and ate several plates of meat. She even asked for noodles at the end to cook in the broth, clearly enjoying the meal.
Worried that she might feel bloated, Bai Juntang took her for a walk around the mall afterward. They bought a few maternity outfits she liked and some canned food for the cat before heading home together.
Cheng Wan spent the weekend at home, curled up watching TV dramas with Aunt Pei.
Bai Juntang had to work over the weekend. Li Chen came by the house three times in two days. The two of them shut themselves in the study, seemingly discussing something. Cheng Wan didn’t understand and didn’t bother to listen—she either nestled on the couch or stayed in her room.
At five months pregnant, Cheng Wan was already having a hard time. Sometimes, she’d wake up at night with back pain and would have to shift positions to fall asleep again. She wondered just how tough the later stages of pregnancy would be.
But every time she woke up in the middle of the night, she would place her hand on her belly to feel the baby’s movements. Only then could she fall back asleep with peace of mind.
On Monday, Bai Juntang dropped Cheng Wan off at work before heading to the airport.
Before leaving, she pulled Cheng Wan close for a moment of intimacy, making sure her scent clung to her.
Cheng Wan’s cheeks turned red. Bai Juntang held back for a while longer before finally letting her go.
At lunchtime, Cheng Wan didn’t plan to go home. She and Chang Le snuck off to order a spicy dry pot.
“Wanwan, did your prenatal check say if it’s a boy or a girl?” Chang Le asked idly as they waited for their delivery. “I’m so curious about your baby.”
“We didn’t check.” Cheng Wan sat in her chair, rubbing her belly. “I’d be happy either way—as long as the baby is healthy.”
“Did the doctor say everything’s okay?”
“Yeah. Dr. Huang said the baby’s growing well—actually a week ahead of average.”
“That’s great! Five more months until the surprise box opens. But since you love spicy food so much, I bet it’s a cute little girl.”
Just as they were chatting, Cheng Wan’s phone on the table buzzed.
Chang Le’s eyes lit up immediately. “Is that our dry pot? Tell him to leave it at the front desk—I’ll go grab it!”
Cheng Wan also thought the delivery was unusually fast, but when she picked up her phone, she froze. The name on the screen was very familiar.
It was Cheng Jiajian.
Seeing that name, Cheng Wan’s whole body tensed. If Xu He gave her a feeling of urgency, then Cheng Jiajian brought with him a kind of oppressive pressure.
Her so-called father had never been one to speak to her proactively. Every conversation was straight to the point, no small talk. In fact, because he didn’t like her, it wasn’t unusual for weeks to pass without them exchanging a single word.
Typically, family matters were handled through Xu He. So when Cheng Jiajian suddenly called her directly, Cheng Wan was caught completely off guard.
She turned around, intending to tell Chang Le it wasn’t the delivery call, only to find that Chang Le had already slipped away at some unknown point. Left with no choice, Cheng Wan answered the call, intending to first ask what it was about.
The line connected. Cheng Wan said softly, “Dad,” then waited silently for him to speak.
“Mm.”
The familiar voice came through. Cheng Jiajian’s tone remained as composed and cold as always. He was clearly displeased with how long she had taken to answer the phone—there was irritation in his voice.
“Has Bai Juntang gone on a business trip?” he asked directly. “Did she tell you where she went or when she’s coming back?”
Cheng Wan sat up straighter in her chair and lowered her head instinctively. After a pause of two seconds, she replied, “She didn’t tell me where. Just said she’d be gone for about a week.”
“Hmph. And that little girl still dares to stand me up that many times?” Cheng Jiajian’s tone turned cutting. “Your alpha really isn’t easy to get ahold of.”
Cheng Wan remained silent. She was used to saying nothing in front of Cheng Jiajian—just as she was used to hiding herself away.
Her silence only made him more displeased. He felt that his adopted daughter had become less obedient than before. Not being his biological child, she was clearly harder to control. Sometimes, he even regretted agreeing to adopt her all those years ago.
Still, at least her pregnancy was going well. With a baby on the way, he’d have even more leverage over Bai Juntang.
“I don’t know what you’ve been whispering to Bai Juntang behind my back,” he said coldly. “But you need to remember—you’ll always be part of the Cheng family. Even if you’ve somehow managed to become a phoenix, it was the Cheng family that raised you.”
Cheng Jiajian’s voice turned sharper. “Surely you don’t actually believe… that Bai Juntang really loves you?”
