How Could a Scumbag Alpha Possibly Love His Wife? - Chapter 42
Bai Juntang drove away from the Cheng family home with Cheng Wan, stepping hard on the gas pedal as the car sped off. She was furious, not just because that child had almost slammed into Cheng Wan’s belly, but because none of the adults around did anything to stop it.
She didn’t know how other families raised their children, but Bai Juntang’s mothers had always been especially strict with her.
She had been taught to be polite and, more importantly, to protect her loved ones.
A child that reckless could only be raised by parents who were just as irresponsible.
Bai Juntang glanced at Cheng Wan in the passenger seat. Thank goodness Cheng Wan wasn’t a biological child of the Cheng family. If she had turned out like that, Bai Juntang wouldn’t keep her around, no matter if she was carrying her child or even her ancestors.
Cheng Wan didn’t notice Bai Juntang looking at her. She was still thinking about what had just happened and felt a tightness in her chest.
Maybe her face had turned too pale, because when they stopped at a red light, Bai Juntang turned to her and asked with concern, “What’s wrong, are you feeling unwell?”
Cheng Wan nodded slightly. She pressed a hand to her chest and said in a low voice, “My chest feels tight, like I can’t breathe properly.”
Bai Juntang reached out and touched Cheng Wan’s forehead. She didn’t feel anything unusual, but seeing how pale her face was made Bai Juntang’s heart ache.
As soon as the light turned green, she drove straight to the hospital.
Even without all the necessary documents, Bai Juntang still managed to register for a specialist and took Cheng Wan for a full check-up. Halfway through, she even went back home to grab Cheng Wan’s previous medical records.
Even after the examination was over, Cheng Wan still felt pressure in her chest. When she saw the doctor frown slightly while reading her prenatal report, she couldn’t help but grow more anxious.
Was something really wrong?
Dr. Huang was working clinic hours that day, and Cheng Wan happened to be her first patient that afternoon. She studied the report, thinking quietly.
She remembered this young Omega. She had shown signs of malnutrition early on, with severe pregnancy symptoms. Things had improved a little over time, but this new report seemed to show a different issue.
Dr. Huang looked at the numbers on the report, then looked up at Cheng Wan and asked, “Since your secondary gender differentiation, have you always used injectable suppressants during your sensitivity periods?”
Cheng Wan didn’t understand why that was relevant, but nodded gently and said, “Yes.”
“And you always wear scent blockers too?”
“Yes.”
Dr. Huang adjusted her glasses, continued writing in the medical file, and explained, “You shouldn’t be wearing them every day during pregnancy. Even typical Omegas only use them during sensitivity periods, not constantly.”
She looked at Cheng Wan seriously and said, “There are many things you need to be careful about during pregnancy. The chance of illness for Omegas during this time is twenty times higher than usual.”
Cheng Wan hadn’t realized that Omegas could be so vulnerable while pregnant. She was startled and quickly nodded.
Bai Juntang frowned slightly. She glanced at the faint mark behind Cheng Wan’s neck where the scent patch had been and asked, “Besides the blockers, is there anything else we should watch for? She felt tightness in her chest today, could it be something more serious?”
“That tightness was probably caused by being frightened. She should feel better after some rest,” Dr. Huang said, then turned to Cheng Wan and asked, “Do you feel a little better now?”
Cheng Wan paused, checked in with herself, then nodded.
“Other than the things I mentioned, everything else looks fine,” Dr. Huang continued writing, then suddenly asked, “You’re still working, right?”
Cheng Wan nodded and said, “Yes, I’m still at work, but the job isn’t too stressful.”
“I see. What I mean is, once you reach the later stages of pregnancy, your body will struggle to keep up. It’s best to take time off and rest at home,” Dr. Huang explained. “It should be written in the maternity handbook we gave you. As labor approaches, Omegas move less easily and rely more on their Alphas. You need to be especially careful.”
Dr. Huang then spent another five minutes listing out things they needed to watch for. She wrote some reminders on a sticky note, gave it to Cheng Wan, and didn’t prescribe anything. Then she sent them on their way.
As they were leaving, she added, “Come back for your next check-up at five months. Until then, just get plenty of rest.”
Cheng Wan nodded. Only then did Bai Juntang take her hand and lead her out of the office.
Walking down the outpatient corridor, Bai Juntang carried Cheng Wan’s medical folder looped around her wrist. With one hand, she held onto Cheng Wan. With the other, she scanned through Dr. Huang’s notes.
Cheng Wan turned slightly to look at her. She felt the warmth from Bai Juntang’s hand and lowered her head without saying anything.
Bai Juntang had already heard the instructions in the consultation room, but she skimmed over the note again before tucking it into the soft pink-blue folder.
That little cloth folder held all of Cheng Wan’s recent scans, blood work, and documents. The doctor had asked them to keep it organized, so Bai Juntang had bought this bag specifically to hold everything related to her prenatal care. That way, if anything happened, they could grab it and go without scrambling to find things.
Once everything was put away, Bai Juntang finally said, “You should stop using scent blockers from now on.”
Cheng Wan looked up with a troubled expression. “But… I smell.”
“Even if you do, you still can’t wear them,” Bai Juntang replied. “Did you already forget what the doctor just said?”
Besides, Cheng Wan’s pheromone smelled like white peach. It was soft and refreshing. Bai Juntang actually loved the scent. She would be happy to smell it every day. Why would she ever dislike it?
Cheng Wan frowned and said, “But there are Alphas at my office…”
Bai Juntang was quiet for a moment. That was a valid concern. She looked at Cheng Wan and said slowly, “No matter what, you can’t wear scent blockers anymore. Besides, your scent is so light. As long as you’re not standing face-to-face with an Alpha, they probably won’t even notice.”
Cheng Wan was still a little uneasy, but when she thought about the baby inside her, she quickly made a choice. Between being accidentally smelled by another Alpha and risking her child’s health, the answer was obvious.
“I understand,” Cheng Wan said softly. “I won’t use the scent blockers anymore.”
Bai Juntang was pleased with her answer, but the more she thought about what had happened earlier, the more upset she became. She said to Cheng Wan, “I’m not going to let this go easily. That child is so young, why would he suddenly run at you like that? Someone must have told him to do it.”
The more she thought about it, the more it made sense. Bai Juntang’s expression darkened. If she hadn’t reacted quickly, that little brat might have really crashed into Cheng Wan.
If something had happened, it wouldn’t have been something she could just fix afterward.
The hospital was crowded, and when they entered the elevator, Cheng Wan was pushed into a corner. Thankfully, Bai Juntang stayed right beside her, naturally wrapping her in her arms to keep anyone from bumping into her.
Cheng Wan leaned against the cold metal wall of the elevator and looked up at Bai Juntang’s stern face. Her emotions were all over the place.
Bai Juntang cared so much about this baby. If the child were born, she would probably be a very good parent.
Even though Bai Juntang rarely said it out loud, Cheng Wan saw it all clearly, the way she looked after her in every detail, even reading the doctor’s instructions multiple times.
Cheng Wan thought to herself, Bai Juntang would definitely be a great mother.
If the child could only have one mother, then Bai Juntang would be the ideal choice.
Cheng Wan’s back was pressed against the cool elevator wall. Even though it was summer, she still felt a chill. She gently placed a hand over her belly and slowly lowered her eyes.
After leaving the hospital, Bai Juntang drove her straight home.
Maybe it was the shock from earlier or the series of checkups in the afternoon, but as soon as Cheng Wan got home, she felt completely drained. Her whole body ached, even her bones felt sore. When Gua Zi the cat came to her, she didn’t even have the energy to play. She just petted its fluffy little head and went to lie down.
Later that afternoon, Xu He tried to call Cheng Wan but couldn’t reach her. So she called Bai Juntang instead. She was calling to apologize for what had happened at lunch.
Even though the child wasn’t hers, he was still a relative. Xu He had been pressured by her husband to call and apologize, hoping that Bai Juntang would agree to meet the family for another meal.
Between the lines, Xu He also brought up the Cheng family’s latest investment project and hinted that she wanted Bai Juntang to take a look at it. But Bai Juntang wasn’t foolish. She knew exactly what they were trying to do—ask for money—so she casually brushed it off with a few vague replies.
Aunt Pei heard about the whole incident and was furious. She decided to make Cheng Wan a special soup to help calm her nerves.
Bai Juntang expected Cheng Wan to wake up by six o’clock, but by seven, she was still asleep. Aunt Pei had already reheated the soup twice, and if she slept any longer, she would miss dinner completely.
While Aunt Pei was reheating the soup again, Bai Juntang quietly walked to Cheng Wan’s door and gently pushed it open.
The soft glow of the living room lights cast Bai Juntang’s shadow onto the floor inside the room. The nightlight near the door flickered on automatically, keeping the room from falling into complete darkness.
She walked over to the bed and saw Cheng Wan lying on her side. One hand was tucked under her ear, the other was protectively resting on her belly.
She was breathing slowly and evenly. Bai Juntang lowered her gaze.
Cheng Wan must have been dreaming about something. Her hand stayed on her round belly, which had grown quite noticeable at just over four months, even when lying down. Bai Juntang couldn’t imagine how someone as small and delicate as Cheng Wan was managing to nourish this baby.
Sitting gently on the edge of the bed, Bai Juntang reached out and touched Cheng Wan’s soft cheek. Compared to when they first met, she had filled out a little, and her complexion had improved a lot. She wasn’t round, but her skin was now glowing with health.
Even her cheeks had become soft enough to pinch.
Instead of letting her sleep, Bai Juntang gently pressed her fingers into Cheng Wan’s cheek and managed to wake her up.
Cheng Wan furrowed her brows as she slowly opened her eyes, staring blankly at Bai Juntang for a few seconds.
Bai Juntang knew she was still waking up, so she wasn’t in a rush. She took the chance to stroke her cheek again and said softly, “It’s already seven in the evening. Time to get up and eat.”
Cheng Wan blinked slowly and mumbled, “Eat…?”
Yes, it was already dark out. It was time for dinner.
Cheng Wan finally sat up in bed, holding her belly with one hand and rubbing her eyes with the other, as if afraid someone might run off with her baby while she was asleep.
“It’s that late already?” Cheng Wan looked around the dim room, confused. She turned to Bai Juntang and asked, “Why did I sleep so long again?”
She murmured, “Lately I’ve been sleeping so much…”
It wasn’t just sleeping through the night anymore. Napping for three or four hours during the day had become normal too, which never used to happen.
Seeing her looking dazed and half-asleep, Bai Juntang couldn’t help but laugh. She reached out and gently pinched Cheng Wan’s cheek again, smiling as she said, “Maybe the baby knows how hard you’re working and wants you to rest more.”
