Her Imperfection for Wifehood - Chapter 43.2
Chapter 43.2
“Mhm, okay.”
She sat up straight to let Wanyun style her hair.
To avoid delaying her meal, Wanyun didn’t go back into the room for a comb. She skillfully and gently gathered the hair with her fingers, then untied the white silk scarf she carried with her to use as a hair tie, binding the dark hair and forming a pretty bow.
With her ears exposed, a sensation of coolness came over her, clearing her head slightly.
The tomato and egg noodles made by Zhang Ma were very delicious, but after a few bites, her eyes teared up. No matter how good other people’s noodles tasted, they couldn’t compare to the bowl Yinyin made for her.
“Wanyun, call Uncle Li and urge An Xi to come see me as soon as possible.” She urgently wanted to know the situation with Yinyin and the Wei family.
“Yes,” Wanyun replied. Just as she turned around, she saw An Xi coming up the stairs with his hat. “Miss, the Young Master is here.”
“Sister, you’re awake.” An Xi handed his hat to Wanyun.
“The Miss was just asking about you,” Wanyun took the hat. “Young Master, please chat with the Miss first. I’ll go to the kitchen to help Zhang Ma.”
“No need to make too much. I’ll also have a bowl of noodles. Actually, make me a bowl of wontons instead.” Earlier that day, he had told Dr. Fu that it was okay to let his sister fully wake up.
After Wanyun left, An Xi sat across from An Jing, looking at the less-than-half-eaten bowl of noodles in front of her. “Sister, since when can you eat sour things?”
Wei Yinxia had cooked for An Jing once at the An house, but An Xi had left early that morning and hadn’t seen it.
“After lying down for so long, I wanted something light but flavorful.” An Jing didn’t explain much. She put down her chopsticks and wiped her mouth. “I’ve slept for several days. How are things… outside?”
“Don’t worry, she’s fine.” An Xi knew well who his sister cared about the most. “The night after we went to the Wei house, Kahn was arrested by the Chinese Concession Police Bureau for running an illegal underground gambling den in the old town. He was also shot in the leg by Chen Dong of the Qiao Gang on the way, becoming a cripple. However, Kahn was bailed out by the Municipal Council, and now the Chinese authorities can’t do anything to him.”
He briefly summarized the events, omitting any mention of his own role in them.
“He’s connected to the Municipal Council. Can we rely on those people in the Police Bureau? We should have killed him long ago,” An Jing said fiercely.
She hated Kahn more and more. She shouldn’t have been indecisive and overly cautious.
“He deserves to die.” An Xi no longer pinned his hopes on the law and decided not to hide the truth any longer. The truth was out. He and Bai Yang were not the only ones who wanted to kill their enemy.
“Actually, the Fuhe Hotel explosion five years ago was not an accident. The real culprit behind it… was Kahn. He wanted to kill Chen Dong for a personal vendetta and implicated many innocent people. I ran into him when I was studying abroad, and I accidentally heard him confess.
“Bai Yang’s father was the head chef and also died in that explosion.
“We originally wanted to join forces to reveal the truth publicly and have Kahn face public punishment. Only then would it satisfy the public, bring comfort to the souls of the deceased, and solace to their families and relatives. But this proved to be much more difficult than we imagined. The outcome was not satisfactory, and it even cost Chen Kang, who helped us… his life in vain.
“Sister, I know you sought out Boss Qiang, hoping he could help eliminate Kahn and clear the way for me. Now it seems that to deal with an extraordinary person, only extraordinary means will suffice.”
What he didn’t mention was that his cousin’s fiancé wrote a critical article about the Kahn incident, which was published yesterday. He was subsequently pursued by the police and his whereabouts are still unknown.
And today, the newspaper office where Ruyue worked quietly disbanded after taking the risk of publishing articles about the Municipal Council’s evil deeds, the police station’s inaction, and the demands of patriotic individuals and the public for the Chinese authorities to execute Kahn.
Shanghai was in chaos. Not only the public sentiment but also the political situation was tumultuous.
While he was speaking, An Jing kept her head down. An Xi couldn’t see her expression, but he could see her right hand resting on the table. Every vein on the back of her hand revealed the anger in her heart.
“If I get another chance, I will not hesitate to shoot him dead,” An Xi declared his stance, reaching out to grasp An Jing’s hand. “Sister, you must follow Doctor Fu’s advice, recover quickly, and we will avenge our parents and Manager He together.”
He said this to encourage her to regain her strength.
The organization had sensed danger and issued a retreat order yesterday.
He also knew his identity had been exposed and he was being watched, but before retreating, he had to ensure his sister’s safety.
The overwhelming news reports were unavoidable. Once An Jing knew that Kahn was the indirect killer of their parents, she wouldn’t leave Shanghai until she killed him.
However, Shanghai could no longer accommodate them.
An Jing remained silent. She squeezed An Xi’s hand tightly, then stood up and returned to her room.
For the next two days, An Jing truly woke up early, went to bed early, ate three regular meals a day, and took her medication on time and in the prescribed dosage.
Tang Yunqing brought Xiaoyu to visit her. Not only did she not contradict Tang Yunqing once, but she also uncharacteristically spent a night sleeping with the mother and daughter in the same bed.
The following day after lunch, An Jing had the bodyguard send Tang Yunqing and her daughter away.
“Godmother, I don’t want to go back. I love staying at the manor, staying with Godmother and Mommy,” Xiaoyu hugged An Jing’s neck and wouldn’t let go.
“Be a good girl, darling. Godmother is still sick and needs a very, very quiet environment to rest well. When Godmother gets better, I’ll come to pick up Xiaoyu and Mommy. We’ll stay at the manor for many days, until the New Year, okay?”
“Okay! Then Godmother, you must get well soon.” She kissed An Jing on both cheeks.
“Xiaoyu is about to become a big sister. Promise Godmother, you can’t make Mommy angry at home. You have to listen to Mommy, take care of Mommy, and later help Mommy take care of your little brother or sister, okay?”
“Mhm, I promise Godmother, I’ll take care of Mommy.”
“Such a good girl.” An Jing also kissed her cheek. While putting her in the car, she said, “Even with a little brother or sister, Xiaoyu will still be Godmother’s most, most, most loved little princess.”
Listening to their conversation, Tang Yunqing frowned. She pulled An Jing aside: “You’re implying something, and it makes me very uneasy.”
Although reading the newspaper about An Jing and Wei Yinxia’s relationship was a lightning bolt that struck her hard, An Xi also explained the whole story to her after An Jing fell unconscious. After these days, she had calmed down.
That’s why she only came after An Jing woke up.
Who An Jing chose to love was her own business. Wei Yinxia was her lover, but wasn’t she still her only confidante and friend?
“Yunqing, you are my best friend. I don’t want to hide anything from you. Kahn must die.”
“You are going to kill him?”
It was only natural for children to seek revenge for their parents. She had no reason to stop her. “Since the Municipal Council has saved and protected him repeatedly, they won’t let him die easily. Furthermore, you don’t even need to think about it. The hospital is definitely surrounded by police officers from the police station. Maybe they are even using Kahn as live bait, waiting for an opportunity to eliminate those who oppose the Municipal Council.”
“I know everything you’ve said. But Yunqing, no matter how difficult it is, I have to do this.” If she didn’t do it, An Xi would. She couldn’t let An Xi take risks anymore.
“Then have you considered what will happen to Wei Yinxia if something happens to you? What will she do?”
How many people chose to protect themselves, unwilling and afraid to wade into the Municipal Council’s murky waters and seek their own death? Yet, these two siblings held an irreconcilable grudge against Kahn, rushing toward the gun barrel. It was a path with only a slim chance of survival.
“An Xi will help me take good care of her, and you will too, won’t you? She will slowly forget me, forget this painful memory, and start a new life.”
The sight of Yinyin being humiliated by the crowd, Yinyin humbly begging Kahn for her sake, and Yinyin’s anguished and helpless gaze—all stabbed An Jing’s heart.
All she had brought Yinyin was endless humiliation and pain. She could no longer tolerate herself being the source of Yinyin’s suffering.
Slap! Tang Yunqing, trembling with anger, slapped An Jing across the face.
“What about me? And Xiaoyu? Are you just going to abandon us? Do all of us who are alive matter less than a single act of revenge? An Jing, I’m telling you, if you are gone, whether Wei Yinxia remains chaste for you for the rest of her life or randomly marries someone else as a concubine, whether she is sick, disabled, alive, or dead, I will absolutely not care about her.”
“Waaah, waaah, waaah…”
The sound of their argument terrified Xiaoyu. She had never seen Mommy and Godmother argue before, and never seen Mommy hit anyone, especially her favorite Godmother.
“Wuwuwu, Godmother, why are you arguing? Xiaoyu is scared…”
Hearing Xiaoyu’s loud cries, An Jing immediately went to comfort her: “Xiaoyu, don’t cry. Mommy and Godmother just had a disagreement while talking. Godmother made Mommy angry. Godmother apologizes to Mommy and Xiaoyu, okay?”
An Jing was pushed away by Tang Yunqing. She got into the car, hugged Xiaoyu, and told the bodyguard in front: “Drive.”
“Yunqing!”
“Come back and find me and Xiaoyu when you can live until the New Year.” All she wanted was for An Jing to live safely. As long as she was alive, she could love anyone.
After the car drove a distance, Tang Yunqing rolled down the window and shouted: “And remember to pay me back the 100,000 yuan you owe me!”
