- He Lost Control with Jealousy — What Happened to Being Untouchable?
- Chapter 27 - The Illegitimate Child
The moment Wang Sheng spotted Sang Wan, his small eyes immediately narrowed into slits, his face plastered with an ingratiating smile that starkly contrasted with his usual demeanor. He looked like a completely different person from the domineering figure he had cut at the birthday banquet.
“Miss Sang, please, have a seat! Make yourself comfortable!”
Sang Wan sidestepped his obsequiousness and walked straight to the empty seat beside Xu Shiming. Her voice was cool and detached: “You called me here just to meet with Mr. Wang?”
A flicker of discomfort crossed Xu Shiming’s face. He cleared his throat awkwardly. “Ahem, Wanwan, it’s like this, Mr. Wang has some matters he’d like to… discuss with you.”
Wang Sheng quickly chimed in, his tone deliberately sycophantic. “Miss Sang, at my birthday banquet, it was my oversight that allowed others to take advantage of you. But I truly had no idea what was happening.”
Sang Wan arched an eyebrow, her lips curling into a mocking smile. “I’ve already settled that score myself. No need for you to trouble yourself over it.”
Wang Sheng also harbored resentment toward Lin Lan. If she hadn’t acted on her own, none of this mess would have happened.
Noticing Wang Sheng’s awkward expression, Sang Wan deliberately twisted the knife. “But since I never came after you, how dare you bring up that night? I’m curious, if Lu Tingzhou hadn’t taken me away that night, what would you have done?”
Wang Sheng’s face flushed with embarrassment. He forced a sheepish laugh. “Mingyue and I were just going to take you upstairs to rest!”
Sang Wan scoffed. “Mr. Wang, you’re such a good person.”
Wang Sheng’s smile faded. Rubbing his hands together, he put on a pained expression. “Miss Sang, you don’t understand, I’m truly at my wit’s end, which is why I’ve come to trouble you. Lu… President Lu… he’s terminated all my projects with the Lu Corporation! Every single one! The money I’ve invested is now tied up in unfinished projects, all of it lost!”
As he spoke, he even managed to squeeze out a few tears, wiping them haphazardly with the back of his hand.
“The bank is pressing me hard for loan repayments. I… I have no other choice!”
Sang Wan listened quietly, her mind clear as a mirror.
Had she not heard about this from Lu Jinxuan beforehand, she would have been shocked.
She never expected that two-faced man to be so ruthless, he was practically driving Wang Sheng to bankruptcy.
“So?” she asked indifferently, her voice betraying neither anger nor joy.
Seeing a glimmer of hope, Wang Sheng hurriedly continued, “Miss Sang, I know you and President Lu share a close relationship. Could you… could you, for the sake of the collaboration between our two companies and considering that the Sang Corporation’s project is also stalled because of my situation, plead with President Lu on my behalf?”
He cautiously studied Sang Wan’s expression. “If President Lu would just show me mercy and let the projects resume, everyone stands to profit. And I swear! I’ll never set my sights on you again, nor will I ever pressure you to marry me.”
Lin Lan, who had been sitting nearby, seized the moment to chime in, her voice soft and coaxing. “Xiao Wan, Mr. Wang has had ties with our Sang family for years. Though he hasn’t made the Sang family any great fortune, he’s at least helped us slowly recover from the crisis your grandfather left behind.”
Her words, ostensibly a plea, carried an underlying reminder, Wang Sheng had contributed to the Sang family’s current standing, and Sang Wan shouldn’t be so ungrateful.
Listening to this, Sang Wan felt nothing but disgust.
Her red lips parted as she curled them into a scornful smile. “Mr. Wang, I think you’ve misunderstood. First, I have no right nor any ability to interfere with Lu Tingzhou’s decisions. Second, the Sang Corporation’s project was stalled because you breached the contract first. What does that have to do with me? As for the Sang family…”
She paused, her icy gaze sweeping over Lin Lan and Xu Shiming. “The Sang family managed to recover thanks to the foundation my grandfather left behind. It had little to do with the so-called ‘help’ you mentioned. All these years of your cooperation with the Sang Group, would you have done it without benefits? You, Mr. Wang, are no philanthropist.”
Wang Sheng’s smile froze instantly as Sang Wan showed him no mercy.
He had pleaded with everyone he could think of, even Sun Meixi, who had been powerless to help and merely gave him some money, promising to lend him a hand if the opportunity arose later.
Originally, he had thought that since Sang Wan was under Lu Tingzhou’s protection, asking her for a favor might turn things around. But to his surprise, she didn’t spare him even the slightest courtesy.
At this point, he no longer feared offending Lu Tingzhou.
Slap!
He slammed his palm on the table, pointing at Sang Wan’s nose and cursing, “You ungrateful brat! Do you really think Lu Tingzhou actually cares about you? He’s just toying with you!”
“A man of his status has seen all kinds of women. Actresses like you in the entertainment industry, those who throw themselves at him naked, he’s seen plenty!”
“Let me tell you, there’s no future for you two. His family would never accept someone like you.”
Wang Sheng grew more agitated as he spoke, spittle flying. “And who knows? Maybe Lu Tingzhou already has a woman or even a secret child overseas these past few years. You’re just a passing fancy since he returned to the country.”
Each word was like a knife, stabbing deep into Sang Wan’s heart.
Especially the line about “having a woman overseas”, it made her chest tighten violently.
She knew Wang Sheng was deliberately provoking her, but she couldn’t help being affected.
A man as outstanding as Lu Tingzhou, was his past truly spotless?
And his attitude toward her, why did he hold back despite their intimacy? Was it because of some reservation?
Sang Wan felt uncertain. Suppressing the turmoil inside, she maintained her composure, even managing a faint smile.
“Are you done, Mr. Wang?” Her voice was light. “If so, I’ll take my leave. If you still need to vent, feel free to continue after I’m gone. My father would love to hear it.”
The corners of her lips curled slightly as she glanced at Xu Shiming, who remained silent.
That look carried both disdain and hatred.
Then she stood up and walked out of the private room without looking back.
Behind her, Wang Sheng’s furious roars and Xu Shiming’s flustered attempts to calm him down echoed.
Sang Wan ignored them all.
Only when she stepped out of the teahouse, bathed in the afternoon sunlight, did she realize her fingertips were ice-cold.
Her earlier good mood about visiting her grandfather had turned heavy because of Wang Sheng’s words.
She didn’t want to bring this awful state of mind to her grandfather. Even though he wouldn’t respond, she still wanted him to see her at her best.
In the end, she had Qi Qi drive her straight home.
Wang Sheng was related to Lu Tingzhou’s sister-in-law, he must know the Lu family well. Otherwise, he wouldn’t have been so certain when he said there was no future for her and Lu Tingzhou.
The hope and sweetness that had just blossomed in her heart were crushed in an instant, leaving her in low spirits the entire afternoon.
…
By evening, the doorbell rang.
Listlessly, Sang Wan went to answer it. Standing outside was Lu Jinxuan, dressed in a suit but looking awkward and uneasy.
“Sis Wan,” Lu Jinxuan called out, his cheeks slightly flushed when he saw her.
Sang Wan was surprised. “Jinxuan? What brings you here?”
Lu Jinxuan scratched his head, looking somewhat embarrassed as he said, “Didn’t you mention there’s a charity auction tonight and asked me to come with you?”
Originally, he hadn’t dared to come, especially after his uncle’s stern warning last night, just thinking about it still made his legs feel weak.
But he couldn’t resist Shen Yubai, that troublemaker who loved stirring the pot, fanning the flames over the phone.
“Jinxuan, your uncle’s happiness for the rest of his life depends on you giving that final push! Tonight’s the perfect opportunity!” Shen Yubai had said with earnest persuasion, his voice dripping with encouragement.
The moment Lu Jinxuan heard it was about his uncle’s “happiness,” though his heart still quivered, he mustered the courage and came anyway.
It was only then that Sang Wan remembered there really was such a charity auction.
When the organizers had invited her earlier, she had agreed without hesitation.
But after the incident with Wang Sheng, she had nearly forgotten.
“Alright, wait for me a moment.”
Sang Wan turned and went back to her room to change.
Though her mood was far from ideal, she never went back on her word once she made a promise.
She quickly changed into a tasteful pale pink dress and applied simple makeup. Since her foot still ached slightly, she opted for a pair of white sneakers.
Her fresh and elegant outfit made Lu Jinxuan sigh inwardly, how had she ended up catching his uncle’s eye?
The woman he admired was destined to become his future aunt. Fate was truly cruel to him.
The auction venue was a dazzling gathering of glamour and high society.
After entering with Lu Jinxuan, Sang Wan effortlessly exchanged greetings with familiar faces.
Though Lu Jinxuan wasn’t particularly well-known in business circles, his family background ensured he had plenty of connections.
Just as her mood was beginning to settle, she ran into the very people who soured it again.
Seeing Xu Mingyue and Song Zixi walk in together, Sang Wan simply took her seat in the guest area, unwilling to engage with either of them.
Xu Mingyue clung to Lu Jinxuan, insisting on sitting beside him.
And so, the four of them ended up seated in an amusingly awkward row.
Most of the auction items were donated, with proceeds going to charity.
Sang Wan absentmindedly flipped through the evening’s auction catalog, listening to the bids being called out repeatedly on stage.
As she casually turned to the third-to-last page, one item immediately caught her attention.
It was a crescent-shaped mutton-fat jade pendant, warm in texture, carved with an antique simplicity, strikingly similar to the half she had kept all these years.
At that moment, the emcee on stage happened to introduce the pendant’s origins, mentioning that it appeared to be one half of a pair, with the other half lost to time.
Sang Wan’s heart skipped a beat!
Could this pendant… truly be the missing half of the one her mother had left her?
When her mother had given it to her, she had said it was a family heirloom passed down from her maternal ancestors, urging her to keep it safe.
Sang Wan studied the image of the pendant closely, the material, the carving style, even the subtle grain patterns were astonishingly identical to the one she possessed!
Almost instantly, she made up her mind, she would bid for this pendant!
“Starting bid 500,000!” the emcee announced loudly.
Without hesitation, Sang Wan raised her paddle. “600,000.”
The room fell into brief silence. After all, the collectible value of such a jade pendant wasn’t particularly exceptional, it was more about sentimental significance.
“650,000!” A sweetly coquettish voice rang out.
Sang Wan followed the sound and saw Song Zixi, her makeup bright and bold, raising her paddle with a challenging smirk.
Sang Wan’s gaze sharpened, her red lips curving slightly as she raised her paddle again. “800,000.”
She wanted to use this method to make it clear to everyone that she had her eye on this item, while also sending a message to Song Zixi: if you’re not interested, don’t provoke.
Song Zixi clearly hadn’t expected Sang Wan to raise the bid so drastically. Her smile stiffened for a moment, a flicker of resentment flashing in her eyes.
Since she was determined to challenge Sang Wan, she quickly raised her paddle again. “One million!”
Back and forth they went, the price climbing steadily, the tension between them palpable.
Most of the attendees were industry insiders, well aware that these two were the lead and supporting actresses of Storm Rising. The drama hadn’t even started filming, yet they were already at each other’s throats. The crowd watched with amusement, opting out of further bidding.
Lu Jinxuan leaned in and whispered, “Sis Wan, do you… really like this jade pendant that much?”
Sang Wan’s gaze remained fixed on the pendant on stage, her tone resolute. “Yes. It’s very important to me.”
If it truly matched the half she already possessed, it would mean reuniting them at last.
No matter what, she had to have it.
