- Chapter 21 - The Reserved CEO
Su Mo stared curiously at the opposite side.
Sang Wan blinked and egged her on, “Why don’t you go knock on the door and pretend you’re delivering takeout?”
Su Mo nodded in agreement. “Not a bad idea. Let me observe for a couple more days, then I’ll make my move.”
“By the way, are you giving up on Lu Tingzhou?” Su Mo took a sip of juice and asked.
Sang Wan frowned, looking helpless. “I can’t lose all my dignity, can I? I’m too good to debase myself over a man. I just can’t do it.”
“You seem reluctant to let go,” Su Mo studied her seriously. “Did you actually fall for him?”
Sang Wan didn’t hide it and admitted openly, “Sort of. He’s rich, handsome, and his figure… is pretty impressive too.”
Su Mo’s eyes instantly lit up. “His figure? How do you know? Does he have abs?”
“Probably.”
Sang Wan recalled that night when his shirt got wet because of her, revealing the well-defined muscles underneath.
The memory sent a wave of heat through her, and her face flushed involuntarily.
“Weren’t you the one who swore you’d never fall for anyone, claiming you didn’t even know what love felt like? What’s this now?”
Sang Wan’s face burned. Being called out so bluntly, this was what true best friends were for.
“If there were really something going on, would I be giving up? He’s too hard to reel in, so I’m done trying. I’ll handle things my own way. Right now, Wang Sheng should be too busy with his own troubles to bother me. I can finally catch my breath.”
“Speaking of which, I find it really strange. Wang Sheng’s whole business relies on the Lu family. Why did Lu Tingzhou suddenly cut off his financial lifeline?”
“How should I know? Maybe it’s just a restructuring. Besides, that man is pretty cold and unapproachable.”
Sang Wan didn’t dare flatter herself into thinking he had done it for her.
“Could it be because of you?”
Su Mo narrowed her eyes at Sang Wan, a teasing smile playing on her lips.
Sang Wan shot her a look. “You’re overthinking it. He said he doesn’t like me.”
“Then it’s not fate. Fate just made him inadvertently help you.”
The two exchanged a knowing smile.
…
Sunday afternoon.
Lu Tingzhou arrived at the old mansion as promised.
The old master and his sister-in-law, Sun Meixi, were already waiting in the main hall.
“Dad.”
Lu Tingzhou greeted him and took a seat on the sofa beside the old man.
“How many times have I called for you to come back? Do you even still consider this your home?”
Lu Tingzhou didn’t like returning. His relationship with his father wasn’t exactly bad, but it wasn’t great either.
Back then, when his eldest and second brothers’ families ostracized him, the old man had seen it all but never intervened.
Though he could understand that his father wanted to toughen him up, those days had been undeniably hard, and the bitterness still lingered.
“What’s the matter?”
“Tingzhou, here’s the thing. Our Lu Group has always had business dealings with my cousin’s company. Why did you suddenly cut them all off?”
Sun Meixi had used her father-in-law’s influence to summon Lu Tingzhou back precisely for this matter. Wang Sheng was already in a panic.
“Most of Wang Sheng’s business has little to do with our core operations at Lu Group. High investment, low returns, it’s only natural I severed ties.”
Sun Meixi glanced at her father-in-law, her eyes pleading.
The old man, feeling guilty toward his eldest daughter-in-law, said sternly, “After all, they’re family. We should lend a hand where we can.”
“He’s just a distant cousin. Is he really worth all this effort? Back when I was assigned to the Beijing branch, no one in the family lifted a finger to help me.”
The old man was left speechless.
Sun Meixi’s face stiffened. Not only had she not helped, but she had also thrown obstacles in his way.
“Let’s put an end to the matter of Wang Sheng. The Lu Group will no longer cooperate with him. If sister-in-law wants to help your relative, perhaps you could take some from your own share.”
Lu Jinxuan could sense the tension in the air and knew his uncle was dead set on this.
“Mom, we’ve already done more than enough for my granduncle. Uncle is acting in the company’s best interest, I don’t see anything wrong with that.”
Sun Meixi shot her son a glare, thinking to herself how she could have given birth to such a foolish boy who would side with outsiders.
Just then, the second son Lu Tingfeng and his wife Tang Qinlan arrived.
“Sister-in-law, I think Third Brother did the right thing. You can’t use company funds to help relatives,” Tang Qinlan said with a smirk, her eyes full of disdain.
“Tingzhou, I’ve already reported the company’s recent affairs to Dad. Your aggressive moves have caused unrest, don’t you think you should rein it in a bit?”
Lu Tingfeng stared at his younger brother. Ever since he had returned to take over the company, his own projects had been increasingly restricted. His resentment was no less than Sun Meixi’s.
“Second Brother, I must have stepped on your toes,” Lu Tingzhou said coldly, giving him a sharp look.
“How can you say that? I only have the company’s best interests at heart.”
“Enough. Stop pretending. Dad isn’t stupid.”
With that, he stood up and left.
Lu Tingfeng was furious. “Dad, did you see how Third Brother behaved?”
“His attitude might not be the best, but he’s not wrong. From now on, keep your personal agendas to yourselves. They say it’s easy to conquer a kingdom but hard to rule it. None of you contributed when we were building this empire, so don’t drag us down now that we’re maintaining it.”
“You’re just favoring Third Brother!”
Lu Tingfeng stormed off in anger.
Lu Jinxuan quietly followed Lu Tingzhou outside.
“Uncle, why did you acquire my little company?”
Lu Jinxuan had started it just for fun and never expected his uncle to take an interest.
“The company doesn’t have an entertainment division yet, and I was just thinking of expanding into that sector.”
Lu Tingzhou’s expression darkened as he recalled the night Sang Wan had been laughing and chatting with Jinxuan.
“So if I join the company, will I still be managing my film studio?”
Lu Tingzhou didn’t refuse. He never mixed personal grudges with business.
“Yes.”
Lu Jinxuan grinned. “Great!”
Lu Tingzhou said nothing more and drove off.
…
At 9:30 a.m. on Monday, Sang Wan received a call from Bai Wei, Lanqin had agreed and wanted her and Xu Shiming to visit Lanqin’s company that afternoon.
After waiting three days, she hadn’t expected Lanqin to actually agree.
“Regardless, you’ve achieved your goal, and things went so smoothly,” Bai Wei said excitedly.
As Sang Wan’s agent, Bai Wei had barely said a word throughout the whole process, watching as Sang Wan secured a top-tier endorsement all on her own. Aside from excitement, there wasn’t much else for her to do.
This level of smoothness reminded her of when Sang Wan had landed the lead role in Storm Rising.
Everything had felt so natural, like water flowing effortlessly downstream.
But it was almost… too smooth. Unrealistically so.
For the heavens to drop one pie after another, and for her to catch them all, what did that mean?
Was luck truly unstoppable?
Sang Wan didn’t overthink it the way Bai Wei did. She headed straight to the Sang Corporation.
This was something best discussed with Xu Shiming in person.
She had no desire to return to the Sang residence, so the company was the best option.
Sang Wan arrived at the company at exactly 10 a.m.
As she stepped through the entrance, she saw Xu Shiming bowing obsequiously as he escorted Lin Hao out.
Lin Hao was taken aback when he saw her, never expecting to run into Sang Wan. His boss had specifically instructed him not to let her find out.
Sang Wan froze for a moment before speaking, “Assistant Lin, what are you doing here?”
Xu Shiming quickly interjected with an ingratiating smile, “Young Master Lu is investing in the Sang Group. Assistant Lin came to sign the contract.”
Sang Wan was puzzled. Lin Hao was Lu Tingzhou’s assistant, why was he running errands for Lu Jinxuan?
If Lu Jinxuan wanted to invest in the Sang Group, why hadn’t he mentioned it at all?
A faint bead of sweat formed at Lin Hao’s temple. His boss had repeatedly warned him, how could they have been so unlucky?
Yet, his expression remained composed. “Miss Sang, Young Master Lu heard the Sang Group has been facing some financial difficulties recently and specifically sent me to assess the situation.”
His words were flawless, they explained his purpose while making it clear it was Lu Jinxuan’s idea.
Xu Shiming nodded repeatedly beside him, his smile so wide the wrinkles on his face could crush a mosquito. “Jinxuan is such a thoughtful boy.”
Sang Wan’s crystal-clear eyes flickered between the two before finally settling on Lin Hao. Her voice was sweet and light. “Thank you for your hard work, Assistant Lin.”
“It’s my duty.”
Lin Hao nodded before leaving. Once in the car, he wiped the sweat from his forehead.
Sang Wan, heels clicking, walked toward the elevator and dialed Lu Jinxuan’s number.
The phone rang a few times before he picked up, his youthful voice tinged with curiosity. “Sis Wan, what’s up?”
“Jinxuan, I just ran into Assistant Lin at the company. He said you sent him to sign an investment contract for the Sang Group. I thought I should at least thank you,” Sang Wan got straight to the point.
There was a noticeable pause on the other end before Lu Jinxuan stammered, “Ah… y-yeah. I just… heard from Xu Mingyue that the Sang Group was having some trouble, so I thought I’d help however I could.”
He scratched his head, realizing Lin Hao represented his uncle. If Lin Hao had gone personally, it must have been his uncle’s doing.
Since Lin Hao said it was on his behalf, his uncle probably didn’t want anyone to know.
Lu Jinxuan smirked. Good thing he reacted quickly, otherwise, his uncle would’ve been exposed.
His secretly affectionate uncle, he’d have to go claim credit for this later.
When Sang Wan heard it was Xu Mingyue who had told him, the faint, inexplicable hope in her heart instantly dissipated.
Of course. Someone like Lu Tingzhou wouldn’t help the Sang Group without reason.
She let out a soft “Mm,” her tone unreadable. “I see. Then I owe you a favor.”
“Sis Wan, you’re too polite. It was nothing.”
Lu Jinxuan chuckled awkwardly. His first crush, and somehow he’d ended up being treated like a little brother.
Worse, he was so spineless, calling her “Sis Wan” over and over.
After hanging up, Sang Wan leaned against the cold metal wall of the elevator and exhaled softly.
It wasn’t exactly disappointment, just the realization that Lu Tingzhou was someone so far out of her reach that even the slightest connection felt like a luxury.
Maybe it was for the best. This way, she could walk her own path with clearer eyes.
She headed straight to Xu Shiming’s office.
Xu Shiming had just finished signing the contract, basking in his triumph after seeing Lin Hao off. When he spotted Sang Wan, his smile dimmed slightly, though it lacked the viciousness he usually showed at the Sang residence.
“What are you doing here? The company is no place for you,” he said coldly, never fond of her stepping foot in the office.
Ignoring his tone, Sang Wan walked straight to the sofa and sat down, her voice calm and steady.
“I came to tell you, I’ve secured the partnership with Lanqin for you.”
Xu Shiming was stunned for a moment, then his eyes widened in disbelief: “You’re saying Lanqin agreed to collaborate with the Sang Group?”
After all, any hope of continuing the partnership with Wang Sheng had completely evaporated. Not only was his follow-up funding unreliable, but even if it did come through, only scraps would trickle down to him, Wang Sheng would pocket the lion’s share.
If Wang Sheng hadn’t gotten dirt on him, why would he have played the fool, sinking so much capital in for such meager returns?
Just as he was worrying about his funding chain, the Lu Group stepped in with an investment.
