The Immortal’s "White Moonlight" Reborn - Chapter 75
Mother said that killing everyone solves all problems.
The following day, Jiaoyue City was exceptionally cold. People opened their windows to find a thick blanket of snow covering the world outside. Even cultivators who had tempered their bodies through heavenly lightning felt a chill seeping deep into their bones.
In just a single night, many cultivators had donned padded robes. Some tried to use magic to melt the snow on the streets, but they couldn’t clear a patch even the size of a palm.
“As I thought… those who fought last night must have been several immortals of the Golden Immortal Realm!” a Fire-Spirit Root Earth Immortal remarked after examining the snow.
The commotion last night had been truly terrifying. When the celestial fire meteorites fell, many thought they would die right then and there. Fortunately, an Ice-Spirit Root immortal had intervened at the last moment to sweep the meteorites away.
“When immortals fight, it’s people like us who suffer. Sigh. The Grand Ceremony hasn’t even begun, and the Dragon Gate hasn’t even appeared, yet they’ve already made such a mess. If something real happens later… the City Lord hasn’t said a word. Who knows if last night will happen again?” The demons had traveled to Jiaoyue City specifically to be near the Dragon Gate, but the humans felt no such need. There was no reason to risk their lives just to watch a spectacle up close.
“You have a point…” When the forbidden technique exploded last night, the very fabric of space had been distorted. Weak cultivators couldn’t even flee. No one wanted a repeat of that experience.
Thus, when Wen Qiwu pushed open her window, she saw many people leaving the city. The streets were much emptier, and half of the stalls that had densely lined the roads were gone.
“So many people are leaving.” Wen Qiwu sighed. If the City Lord of Jiaoyue City weren’t her Senior Sister’s friend, she would have wanted to take her sister away from this den of trouble herself.
Wen Qiwu had harbored suspicions last night, but seeing the city draped in silver this morning confirmed it—her Senior Sister’s power had gone slightly out of control when she made her move.
In the past, even if her sister’s actions caused the climate to change, she could instantly pull back the rampaging cold as long as she controlled her strength. Yet the snow outside hadn’t melted all night. The air was now so cold that Wen Qiwu had to wrap herself in a cloak woven from the feathers of Fire-Feather Birds.
Her sister insisted she was fine, but that sword strike must have aggravated her old injury. Just as Wen Qiwu was about to close the window, a common coastal seabird flew in. Shivering, it landed on her shoulder and let out a few soft, piteous chirps.
Even the birds in the city couldn’t take the cold anymore.
Wen Qiwu closed the window and placed a fire crystal into the bird’s little chest feathers. With the crystal’s warmth, the bird stopped shivering immediately. It chirped brightly, rubbed affectionately against Wen Qiwu’s arm, and then out of her sight, gave her clothes a couple of pecks.
To the Avian Tribes, having one’s feathers appear on a Phoenix was a supreme honor, something to be boasted about for generations. Even this little bird, which had barely developed any sapience, instinctively wanted to pluck out the feathers in Wen Qiwu’s cloak and replace them with its own.
“Be good. It’s cold out today, so stay in here for a while. Wait until it gets warmer before you go out.” Wen Qiwu patted the bird’s head, and the little creature chirped excitedly.
“Cough, cough.” A soft cough came from the bedside. Wen Qiwu quickly placed the seabird on a low cabinet and, with a thought, moved to her sister’s side.
She had already brewed the medicine; a slightly bitter scent permeated the room.
Yun Heng finished a brief session of internal healing. Opening her eyes, she saw yet another bird clinging to her Junior Sister. She sighed inwardly. Fine, a bird is just a bird. A normal bird was nothing—as long as it wasn’t those bird demons or humans. Those ones actually wanted to steal her little Phoenix away.
However, her sigh had accidentally tugged at the old wound in her chest, causing the cough. Yes, just an accident. It certainly wasn’t a deliberate attempt to make her Junior Sister put the bird aside.
“Senior Sister, drink your medicine first.” Wen Qiwu placed the bowl, now at the perfect temperature, into Yun Heng’s hands.
Yun Heng’s face looked paler than yesterday, making Wen Qiwu’s heart ache.
Yun Heng drained the medicine in one go. Wen Qiwu then produced a candy from her storage bag and popped it into her sister’s mouth.
“What’s wrong with your hand?!” Wen Qiwu’s eyes widened with gravity. As she went to take the empty bowl, she noticed Yun Heng’s right hand—her sword hand, trembling slightly. Even when she was gravely injured, her sword tip never wavered; how could she fail to hold a bowl steady?
Yun Heng seemed to notice the issue only after hearing Wen Qiwu’s voice. She frowned, looking at her right hand. Just as her Junior Sister said, it was trembling.
After Wen Qiwu took the bowl, Yun Heng pressed her left hand against her right wrist. She began chanting a complex, ancient spell. Finally, she extracted a strand of demonic energy from her wrist that she hadn’t noticed before!
Once that faint wisp of demonic aura was pulled out, Yun Heng felt the strength in her wrist return to normal. She had assumed the weakness was a lingering effect of her old injury, but it turned out a sliver of demonic energy had quietly entwined itself within her flesh and bone.
Yun Heng immediately thought of the thing she had struck with her sword through the window last night. She hadn’t seen what it was, only feeling like she had hit a mass of cool demonic energy that vanished instantly upon contact. Had she not been so confident in her own senses, she might have doubted her own mind.
The thing hadn’t reappeared since then, as if it had been annihilated by her sword intent. She hadn’t been able to find any clues. Yet, despite her caution, she had still suffered a minor setback.
“It’s from the thing I encountered last night,” Yun Heng told Wen Qiwu.
“Senior Sister, give me your hand.” Wen Qiwu’s gaze darkened. She cradled her sister’s right arm and summoned her Phoenix Fire to envelop it.
Phoenix Fire was the ultimate purifier of evil. It was far more effective than mere human perception. Under Wen Qiwu’s careful searing, she discovered more demonic remnants hiding in the marrow and the crevices of the bone. The energy seemed self-aware, attempting to hide, but Phoenix Fire was superior. Those elusive wisps were soon burned to ash.
Meanwhile, in the Azure Sea not far from Jiaoyue City.
This was the depths of the ocean where the ritual to summon the Dragon Gate would take place. Nearby, in an isolated pocket of space, a young man was tending to an incense burner. However, there was no ash or incense inside—only a swirling mass of black demonic energy.
He chanted non-stop, surrounded by fresh corpses used as sacrifices.
Judging the timing to be right, he threw a corpse into the burner. But this time, the burner didn’t remain calm. It began to vibrate and crackle violently, like boiling water in a sealed pot.
The young man panicked; he had never seen this before. He tried to stabilize the burner while calling for help, but before reinforcements could arrive, white flames suddenly erupted from the vessel.
Boom!
With a thunderous explosion, the burner shattered.
Only then did the Great Sage of the Demon Realm walk over at a leisurely pace. The explosion had been so massive that the young man guarding it had nearly been killed; he was still reeling from the shock.
More importantly, he didn’t know how to explain this to the Great Sage! That burner was a treasure. He knew the Sage was using it to deal with a formidable enemy. And now, it had exploded right under his nose! The Sage would surely skin him alive.
Tap, tap. Footsteps. The Sage was here! The young man shivered, kneeling to the side, not daring to look up.
“Those flames… it seems someone helped her.” He picked up a shard of the burner. His expression didn’t show the fury the young man expected. “Stop kneeling. Get up.”
The young man climbed to his feet, relieved. “Sage, should we set the trap again?”
“No. The same trick won’t work on her twice. Besides… my goal has already been achieved.” He looked toward Jiaoyue City with a profound gaze. “To deal with her, I sacrificed a Demon Lord and a Demon Seed. This hard-won opportunity cannot be wasted.” The demon sighed. “If Yun Heng does not die, unifying the Six Realms will remain nothing but a dream.”
“With you here, that so-called ‘Exalted One’ is as good as dead,” the young man flattered.
“It’s not that easy. If she hadn’t developed a weakness of her own, I would have no way to touch her. Perhaps it was destiny that allowed me to see that child.” The demon recalled a vision from a long, long time ago a glimpse of Yun Heng holding a little girl. He had remembered it ever since, plotting every moment.
It was perhaps embarrassing to admit, but in the entire Demon Realm, there wasn’t a single demon who could confront the Exalted One in the light. They could only rely on schemes and conspiracies. But as long as a tactic worked, demons—who possessed weak or nonexistent moral compasses accepted it gladly.
“I just don’t know why Yun Heng’s condition seems to have improved so much.” The demon thought of the woman traveling with Yun Heng. Had some unforeseen variable interfered with destiny?
Back in the room, Wen Qiwu sneezed. Yun Heng immediately took the cloak Wen Qiwu had just removed and wrapped it around her again.
“Are you cold?” Yun Heng took her Junior Sister’s hand. It was very warm, like a little stove. She didn’t seem cold at all.
“I’m not,” Wen Qiwu shook her head. The seabird nearby, sensing her emotional shift, flew over and chirped worriedly.
“A-Que?” Yun Heng had just started to speak when she was suddenly enveloped by a pair of wings. Judging by the state of the feathers, the little Phoenix was quite “puffed up” with anger.
“Were you frightened?” Yun Heng held her Junior Sister in her arms, gently stroking her back. The feathers were soft and felt wonderful to the touch.
“The people of the Demon Realm are targeting you, Senior Sister,” Wen Qiwu said through gritted teeth. She didn’t believe for a second that this was an accident. “I’m going to find those demons.”
They were like snakes in a gutter. If they weren’t dragged into the light, you never knew when they would bite again.
“Their origins are unknown. Don’t be in such a hurry to act,” Yun Heng soothed, stroking her long hair.
Wen Qiwu nodded against her sister’s chest. “Mother said it. She said that as long as you kill all of those things, all problems will be solved.”
Yun Heng froze for a moment. Then, a gust of wind from flapping wings blew by, and a round, white fluff-ball landed on Wen Qiwu’s shoulder. Qingtuan let out a “Chirp!”, as if asking if she had said something wrong.
As she thought… Yun Heng sighed softly. The only one who could lead a little Phoenix astray was a big Phoenix.
