The Immortal’s "White Moonlight" Reborn - Chapter 47
As fate would have it, Fellow Daoist Yu feels remarkably similar to my Senior Sister.
The passage out of the Myriad Forest Realm was set to close early, leaving Wen Qiwu with very little time. Seeing that her mind was made up, the others stopped trying to dissuade her. Gao Fu proactively helped map out a route, though to her disappointment, Wen Qiwu ultimately decided not to let her tag along.
It all started with a single comment from Yu Hengwei, who pointed out that Gao Fu hadn’t even reached the Earth Immortal Realm yet. Entering the Tomb of the Phoenix Sovereign would be excessively dangerous for her, and for her own safety, it was best if she stayed behind.
Wen Qiwu agreed. Gao Fu had already helped her so much; she couldn’t allow her friend to risk her life.
And so, Gao Fu was left behind. She gnawed on her handkerchief, watching Yu Hengwei’s departing back with resentment. The gloom that had previously shrouded the woman had vanished, and she seemed to be in quite a good mood. The more Gao Fu thought about it, the more suspicious it felt. While the suggestion was technically for her own good, she couldn’t help but feel that this “kindness” wasn’t entirely pure.
Before she could reach a conclusion, however, the two of them had vanished without a trace.
The Endless Sea of Trees was a place where crisis and opportunity coexisted; anyone entering had to tread with absolute caution.
Yet, their journey was surprisingly smooth. Occasionally, members of the Feather Clan would even fly by, dropping spiritual flowers, herbs, or fruits for Wen Qiwu.
“They really like you.” Yu Hengwei watched the birds pass, a flicker of displeasure in her eyes. However, whenever her gaze returned to Wen Qiwu, it softened into tenderness.
Wen Qiwu chuckled at the pink spiritual flower in her hand. Her beautiful eyes curved slightly, looking more radiant than the bloom itself. As a bird perched on her shoulder took flight, it accidentally brushed against a loose strand of hair by her temple.
Yu Hengwei dithered for a moment. She instinctively raised her hand, seemingly wanting to tuck that stray lock back into place. But when Wen Qiwu suddenly looked toward her, Yu Hengwei’s fingertips trembled, and she hurriedly pulled her hand back.
Yu Hengwei’s expression remained stoic and beyond reproach. No one could have guessed the turbulent emotions hidden beneath that calm surface.
“It might just be my constitution; I’ve always been popular with these little fellows.” The fact that Wen Qiwu carried the Blood Phoenix lineage was a secret she couldn’t share with outsiders. Since her attention wasn’t fully on Yu Hengwei, she failed to notice the woman’s brief lapse in composure.
“This place feels different from when I last came. It’s… too quiet.” Wen Qiwu looked past Yu Hengwei into the deeper reaches of the forest.
“A divine fire broke out in the heart of the Endless Sea of Trees a while back. Since then, the demonic beasts throughout the forest have been restless. Some powerful beasts fled from the center to the outskirts. Many cultivators were caught off guard and suffered heavy casualties,” Yu Hengwei explained in detail.
“I see.” Wen Qiwu had only ever felt this oppressive silence in the central zone. That area was inhabited almost exclusively by beasts at or above the Earth Immortal Realm. They would mark their territories, forbidding any other humans or demons from entering, leaving those lands in a state of deathly stillness.
They hadn’t walked much further when two “White-Fluffs” birds in the Mind-Gazing stage fluttered down, tugging at Wen Qiwu’s sleeves with their beaks.
“What is it?” Wen Qiwu placed the little creatures in her palms. They hopped around anxiously, chirping frantically to convey a message.
[Danger]
[Dangerous demon ahead.]
“There seems to be a troublesome beast up ahead.” Wen Qiwu frowned, looking at her companion. By then, Yu Hengwei was already staring forward, as if she could already see the threat.
“There is a black bear. Its strength is at the early stage of the Earth Immortal Realm.”
Scattered around the bear were numerous bones, both human and demon. Its eyes glowed with a faint crimson light; it was clearly a man-eating man-eater.
Wen Qiwu and Yu Hengwei hadn’t even stepped into its territory yet, but the bear had caught the scent of an exceptionally fresh and noble bloodline. To a demonic beast, a young phoenix whose strength was still developing was a supreme tonic. It suddenly stood up, sniffing the air, its saliva dripping to the ground.
The black bear demon roared at the sky and lunged toward them like it hadn’t eaten in eight hundred years. Wen Qiwu hadn’t wanted to expend her immortal power before reaching the Tomb, but this bear had no intention of letting them go.
She would have to fight…
Just as Wen Qiwu drew her weapon, a streak of ice-blue light pierced through space and shot into the distance. It moved so fast she couldn’t see it clearly, but it looked like a needle-shaped immortal tool.
Boom! A sudden explosion erupted nearby. The bear demon maintained its forward momentum, but a tiny needle-hole, rimmed with ice crystals, had appeared in its head. The light had already faded from its eyes. It slammed headfirst into a towering ancient tree.
The giant tree collapsed with a thunderous crash. The bear demon stopped, falling senseless to the ground.
When Wen Qiwu went over to inspect it, she found the beast completely devoid of life. Its soul hadn’t even had the chance to escape. It was as dead as could be.
Fellow Daoist Yu is truly powerful. Is she really just an Earth Immortal? I’d believe it if someone said she was a Golden Immortal.
Wen Qiwu assumed the other woman was simply hiding her true strength a necessary precaution for rogue cultivators. She tactfully refrained from prying.
“Fellow Daoist Yu, should we harvest this bear’s hide, hiss!” As soon as Wen Qiwu touched the skin, she immediately pulled her finger back, stung by the cold.
How is it this icy?! Wen Qiwu’s eyes widened in disbelief.
She was a phoenix. Very few things in the world could freeze her, yet the hide of this bear had nearly frostbitten her finger.
“Fellow Daoist Wen!”
Wen Qiwu’s hand was suddenly pulled into a pair of palms. Yu Hengwei’s face was tense. Although she still looked stoic, Wen Qiwu could see a flash of anxiety and concern in her lowered eyes.
“Does it still hurt? Do you need some medicine?”
This feeling… it was so familiar.
Wen Qiwu withdrew her hand and offered a polite word of thanks. “I’m not that fragile. Thank you for your kindness, Daoist Yu.”
Realizing her behavior was a bit inappropriate, Yu Hengwei reined in her emotions and stood aside, though her gaze occasionally flickered toward Wen Qiwu’s reddening fingertip.
“An Earth Immortal beast hide is a good prize. It can be forged into an immortal tool or sold for a decent amount of immortal stones. Do you want to keep it?” Wen Qiwu watched Yu Hengwei for a moment. The woman’s expression seemed perfectly open; perhaps she was overthinking things.
Yu Hengwei shook her head, her lips pressed together in a faint apology. “I was afraid I couldn’t control it just now, so I didn’t hold back. I’m afraid the hide is useless now.”
She cut open the bear’s skin; the flesh and bone had been utterly ravaged by extreme frost. It wouldn’t fetch many stones now.
“If you want beast hides, I can go get some intact ones for you,” Yu Hengwei offered.
“No, no need. I have no use for them,” Wen Qiwu waved her off.
What domineering power.
Wen Qiwu took a sharp breath as she saw the true state of the bear. Though only a single needle had flown out, the power it unleashed inside the bear’s body was exceptionally violent. By comparison, even though her Senior Sister also had an ice root, her power was much more peaceful when she fought. If Fellow Daoist Yu’s weapon ever landed on her, she feared she wouldn’t be able to escape either.
A-Fu found quite a formidable helper, she thought. However, one thing piqued her curiosity.
“Fellow Daoist Yu, is your weapon a sword or a needle?” Yu Hengwei always carried a sword, so Wen Qiwu had assumed she was a sword cultivator, but she had used a needle when faced with danger.
Yu Hengwei’s body seemed to stiffen slightly. Her lips moved, and after a few breaths, she said, “I cultivate multiple paths.”
She didn’t specify which was her primary one.
“Multiple paths?” Wen Qiwu looked impressed. In cultivation, it was usually better to master one thing than to dabble in many. Many people who tried to learn too much ended up mastering nothing and failing to reach the Great Dao.
But there was another type of person, the exceptionally gifted genius who could master everything they touched. Given Daoist Yu’s strength, she was clearly the latter.
“Fellow Daoist Yu is just like my Senior Sister. My Senior Sister focuses on the Way of the Sword, but she is well-versed in other fields as well.”
Yu Hengwei’s grip on her sword hilt tightened, her knuckles turning white.
“As fate would have it, Fellow Daoist Yu feels remarkably similar to my Senior Sister…” Wen Qiwu remarked casually. Behind her, Fellow Daoist Yu stumbled.
As Wen Qiwu stepped around the bear’s carcass, she caught sight of a peculiar set of remains out of the corner of her eye.
Her voice cut off abruptly.
It was the skeleton of a member of the Feather Clan a Blue Luan, it seemed.
The bear had been a clean eater, sucking out the souls of most of its prey, but this particular skeleton had been lucky.
She knelt down and gently stroked the white bone of the Luan’s head. From within the bone came a weak, ethereal cry.
“Its soul is about to dissipate.” Yu Hengwei stood beside her, observing the remnant soul. It was too fragmented; it would likely vanish into the heavens and earth at any moment. She was powerless to stop it.
“Let me try.” A white flame flickered in Wen Qiwu’s palm. The remnant soul of the Luan was enveloped in the fire. The bird’s weak cries gradually grew stronger, as if the flame of life was being injected into its broken soul.
The Blue Luan’s soul went from hopeless to saved.
“Fellow Daoist Wen, a group from the Blue Luan tribe is approaching. They are likely looking for it.” Yu Hengwei sensed them coming and pointed toward the left.
The Luan Queen herself was leading the younger Luans out for training; she certainly wouldn’t let one of her children die out here without even being able to return home.
“I’ll leave the rest to the Luan Queen; she’ll know what to do.” Wen Qiwu stroked the lingering soul of the Blue Luan before standing up. “Fellow Daoist Yu, let’s keep moving.”
Yu Hengwei nodded. As long as they didn’t continue the previous topic, everything was fine in her book.
After they left, the Luan Queen arrived in a fury, determined to skin the black bear alive. She hadn’t expected someone to beat her to it, but since the corpse was still there, she could at least scatter its ashes.
“Poor child, thank goodness you can still be saved.” The Luan Queen extracted the young Luan’s soul from the bones, but as she cradled the tiny soul in her hands, she froze.
“This is…”
Embedded within the little one’s soul was a trace of the Fire of Vitality—the companion flame of the White Phoenix. It was the world’s ultimate spiritual medicine, capable of healing wounds of both body and soul.
But the last White Phoenix in the world was the previous Demon Empress, who had fallen ten thousand years ago. Where did this flame come from? They were so close to the Tomb of the Phoenix Sovereign… Could it be that the deceased Empress was still protecting the Blue Luans?
