Green Tea Top Student Falls in Love with Me - Chapter 7
When Shi Wangui returned, Wang Yuyuan flung the door open and shouted in her face, “Did you steal Liang Jie’s money?”
Her voice was deliberately loud. It was the busiest time in the dormitory, and passing students halted their steps after all, in their weary lives, occasional drama served as a spice to their monotonous routines.
Shi Wangui replied calmly, “Are you implying that I stole from you?”
Wang Yuyuan planted her hands on her hips and retorted, “Not from us from Liang Jie. And yes, that’s exactly what we mean.”
Just then, Liang Jie tugged at Wang Yuyuan’s sleeve and whispered, “Yuyuan.”
Shi Wangui walked straight to her own seat and said, “Sorry, but I find your things dirty. Touching them would make my whole body itch.”
The word “dirty” seemed to provoke Wang Yuyuan, who snapped back, “Who are you calling dirty? You’re the filthy one! A bastard raised without a mother!”
“What did you say?” Shi Wangui didn’t turn around, but her grip on her phone tightened. “Say that again.”
Wang Yuyuan crossed her arms and enunciated each word: “I said you! Were! Born! With! A! Mother! But! Raised! Without! One!”
With a sharp crack, Shi Wangui slammed her phone down, strode over to Wang Yuyuan, and threw a punch.
Wang Yuyuan couldn’t withstand the force or the humiliation. She stumbled sideways, saved from falling only by Liang Jie’s support. Tearfully, she cried, “Was I wrong? How dare you steal and still act tough? Do you even have a mother? Everyone knows your mother is dead.”
Just as Shi Wangui was about to strike again, someone grabbed her arm. But Shi Wangui was already blinded by rage; her slender frame seemed to surge with boundless strength.
Wen Youren held onto Shi Wangui’s arm and said to Wang Yuyuan, “First of all, this has nothing to do with you. If anyone should be asking, it’s the person beside you, not you. Second, if money’s missing, go report it, to the teacher or the police. Don’t rely on your baseless accusations.”
The hallway had filled with students. Wang Yuyuan, who had opened the door herself earlier, now found herself humiliated. She burst into loud sobs, if only to preserve some shred of dignity.
Realizing Wen Youren was referring to her, Liang Jie spoke up, “We may have acted impulsively, but Shi Wangui hit someone. Shouldn’t she apologize?”
“Apologize my ass.” Shi Wangui struggled to break free, but the next moment, Wen Youren wrapped her in a firm embrace. Shi Wangui was shorter and weaker, completely powerless against her hold.
“Apologies should follow the order of events. If anyone should apologize first, it’s you,” Wen Youren stated coolly. “So, go ahead.”
“Liang Jie, let’s ignore them. We’ll report this to the teacher and expose this thief for everyone to see.”
“Damn you!” Shi Wangui struggled fiercely but failed to break free. “I told you I wouldn’t touch your dirty money, and I meant it. I’d rather scavenge through garbage than lay a hand on your filthy cash.”
“Who knows?” Wang Yuyuan sneered. “Everyone knows you’re capable of any evil. Haven’t you extorted enough ‘protection money’ outside? Did we miss our payment, so you had to steal?”
Wen Youren pulled Shi Wangui behind her and glared down at Wang Yuyuan and the others. “I’ve said it already you can report this to the police or a teacher. But don’t you dare spread malicious rumors.”
For some reason, even though Wen Youren was usually quiet, it was easy to sense when she was angry. Wang Yuanyuan felt a bit intimidated and stopped her scolding.
Liang Jie said, “We didn’t think it through properly today. We’ll tell the teacher tomorrow.”
Wen Youren said, “Apologize.”
Liang Jie: “…”
After a few seconds of silence,
Wen Youren repeated, “Apologize.”
Her tone was no longer as calm as before. Though she wasn’t very close to Shi Wangui, after all. Shi Wangui was like her, living in a family without love. Neither of them was at fault; it was just that neither had done the right thing.
Liang Jie whispered, “I’m sorry.”
Then she raised her voice, “Now it’s her turn to apologize to Yuanyuan, right?”
Wen Youren didn’t refuse but quietly said to Shi Wangui, “Apologize.”
“Get lost.” Shi Wangui, with her fiery temper, was unwilling. She shook off Wen Youren’s hand and ran out of the dormitory.
Seeing this, Wen Youren just shrugged and said, “No helping it. She doesn’t want to.”
Liang Jie: “…”
Wang Yuanyuan: “…”
The students who had been watching the commotion in the hallway had mostly dispersed by the time Shi Wangui grabbed her coat and left. After all, watching was one thing, but no one wanted to get themselves into trouble.
Wen Youren returned to her seat to continue her homework. Some time later, when Wang Yuanyuan and Liang Jie had already gone to bed, she noticed that Shi Wangui still hadn’t returned.
She checked her phone but didn’t have Shi Wangui’s contact information. Besides, she had many unread messages on WeChat, none of which seemed worth replying to.
She twirled her pen a few times, unable to focus on her homework anymore. Then, she took a bag of soft bread and a bottle of milk from her cabinet, put on her coat, and went out to look for Shi Wangui.
Finding her wasn’t difficult. The dormitory entrance would be locked by the matron at 11 p.m., and Shi Wangui wouldn’t be able to leave, nor would the matron let her. The only place she could be was the bench around the corner.
When Wen Youren found Shi Wangui using her phone’s flashlight, she was curled up with her legs tucked in, her face buried in her knees. Her hair covered the rest of her face as she crouched, and her school uniform was tucked under her.
No matter how cold it was, she wouldn’t let herself get dirty.
“Here.” Wen Youren handed her the bread and milk. She knew Shi Wangui hadn’t eaten. As desk mates, she had that much observational skill.
Shi Wangui had heard the footsteps earlier, but her pride kept her from looking up. Without raising her head, she said, “Get lost.”
“Suit yourself,” Wen Youren said calmly. “Don’t lie awake hungry in the middle of the night.”
As if on cue, Shi Wangui’s stomach rumbled. She had already been hungry from skipping dinner, and after all the drama, she was even hungrier.
Shi Wangui: “…”
Might as well eat it since it’s offered.
She lifted her face, took the bread and milk. The bread had a strawberry filling, which she loved. She finished it in a few bites and drank the milk to soothe her stomach.
“Thank you,” Shi Wangui said. She was someone who remembered kindness. This was the second time Wen Youren had given her food, so in Shi Wangui’s mind, Wen Youren’s score was now -98.
Wen Youren sat down beside her and said, “Let’s go back then. The teacher will clear your name.”
Shi Wangui swung her feet a few times and voiced the question on her mind, “Why don’t you suspect me?”
Wen Youren fell silent for two seconds. “Why would I suspect you? Stealing money isn’t something you’d do.”
“Besides, those two aren’t good people either, one’s thoughtless, the other’s cunning. Believe me, they’ll only dare to spread this rumor widely but won’t report it to the teacher.”
Shi Wangui muttered under her breath, “Who cares about them?”
Wen Youren said in a serious tone, “So you should take the initiative. Go tell the homeroom teacher as soon as you get to class tomorrow.”
Shi Wangui also fell silent for a few seconds, then stared at Wen Youren with wide eyes. “Why?”
Wen Youren replied, “Because you shouldn’t let yourself be wronged for no reason.”
“Our lives should be plain and simple, not filled with dramatic rumors and chaos caused by others.”
Shi Wangui was silent again for a few moments before saying, “I realize you talk a lot too.”
“But I still dislike you,” she added, “for no reason.”
Then, silently in her heart, she adjusted Wen Youren’s score to -97.
“You’re childish,” Wen Youren said, “for no reason.”
“…” Shi Wangui turned her head away. “Stop copying me.”
-100 points.
They returned to the dormitory. Before leaving, Shi Wangui made sure to take out the trash. The hallway was now pitch black and completely empty. She wasn’t afraid herself, but she had a feeling this top student seemed terrified of the dark, walking unsteadily.
If the other students weren’t all asleep, Shi Wangui thought, she would definitely play a trick on Wen Youren. Pretend to be a ghost? Throw a pebble? What would she do?
Early the next morning, when Shi Wangui arrived in class, Wen Youren gave her a look, reminding her to tell the teacher. But Shi Wangui didn’t go it was already too late.
On her way to class, she had passed by other classrooms and encountered hostile stares. And now, in her own classroom, her classmates were scrutinizing her as if their eyes could bore holes through her.
Liang Jie and the others had struck first. It was possible the incident had already blown up on the school forum last night.
Shi Wangui put down her backpack and said, “It’s too late.”
As soon as Sun Yi and Wang Hu saw Shi Wangui arrive, they immediately asked, “What’s going on? Who’s the bastard spreading rumors about you?”
Shi Wangui didn’t hide it. “Liang Jie and Wang Yuyuan from the next class. They said their money was stolen.”
Sun Yi cursed, “Damn, daring to spread rumors about my friend. When I saw it last night, I went and cursed them out in the comments. I even rallied all my friends, but those bitches never responded.”
Shi Wangui rubbed her temples and said, “Don’t worry. Within three minutes, the homeroom teacher will definitely call me to the office.”
But it didn’t even take three minutes. As soon as she finished speaking, the homeroom teacher appeared in the classroom and said gently, “Shi Wangui, come with me for a moment.”
Shi Wangui, who was used to being scolded by the homeroom teacher every day, was taken aback by the unusually gentle tone. She froze for a few seconds before slowly getting up and following the teacher out.
Instead of taking her to the office, the teacher led her to the artificial rockery behind the school. “I believe you,” the teacher said, “but I need to hear the answer from you. After you tell me, I’ll investigate slowly. I won’t let anyone slander my student.”
Shi Wangui fell silent for a few seconds. It was the first time she had felt what it was like to be protected or perhaps not the first time. Wen Youren last night might have been the first.
“I didn’t steal it,” Shi Wangui said.
The homeroom teacher’s expression instantly softened. This female teacher had only been teaching Shi Wangui for a little over two months, and she had only known these students for the same short period. She didn’t judge people by their grades; she believed every student could be saved.
“Don’t worry, I will ensure you receive justice,” the homeroom teacher said.
Truthfully, Shi Wangui couldn’t quite recall the teacher’s name, their time together had been too brief. She only remembered that the teacher’s surname seemed to be Wang, as she had introduced herself only once before telling the students to simply address her as “homeroom teacher” or “Chinese teacher.”
Shi Wangui replied softly, “Okay.”
The homeroom teacher led Shi Wangui back to the classroom. After Shi Wangui took her seat, the teacher tapped the lectern, and the students immediately fell silent.
“This morning, I received some news unpleasant news. Regarding any information without verified results, I urge everyone not to be swayed. We must trust in the truth. Until the outcome is clear, I do not want to hear any rumors about this matter circulating in our class.”
“If I catch wind of any, I will have to invite your parents to take you home for proper discipline, as it seems I am incapable of managing you myself.”
