Green Tea Top Student Falls in Love with Me - Chapter 34
“Let’s go eat. I am hungry,” Shi Wangui said, her mind in a chaotic whirl as she tried to find an escape.
She felt this way because her answer seemed to be exactly the same.
“Okay,” Wen Youren replied, brushing the hair from the girl’s forehead.
As they walked, Wen Youren suddenly stopped and took Shi Wangui’s hand. “Study hard from now on. On the road of life, every choice you make will have its right and wrong sides. Do not choose a path that will lead to regret just for the sake of bad people.”
“And also, what I wanted to say just now was that my answer is not necessarily the correct one.”
Shi Wangui was confused. “Huh?”
Wen Youren started walking again. “It is nothing.”
“Honestly,” Shi Wangui muttered, feeling speechless. “It is the modern era. Why do you have to speak in riddles instead of just being clear for once?”
Wen Youren only smiled and did not reply.
It was currently time for physical education for one of the grades. A few students had arrived early at the canteen and were nearby discussing rehearsals for the afternoon gala. Shi Wangui leaned against a pillar behind them and, even though she did not mean to eavesdrop, she overheard most of their conversation.
Although the food here was good, compared to having fun, it was a clear no.
Once the students left, Shi Wangui asked, “Did you hear that? They have performances this afternoon. Can we go watch?”
“We can. You can watch for a while as long as we head home before the last bus.”
“Great!”
Classes did not start until two o’clock, and they had nowhere else to go in the meantime. Wen Youren took Shi Wangui to the playground. They lay on the green grass looking at the sky, surrounded by students strolling in pairs or small groups. Since they were all the same age, they blended in perfectly, and no one noticed they were outsiders.
“Shi Wangui,” Wen Youren called out. She was leaning against a basketball hoop, watching Shi Wangui, whose gaze was fixed on something in the distance.
“What?” Shi Wangui was currently using her perfect 20/20 vision to spy on a couple dating in the corner of the playground. She did not want to spare a single bit of attention for anything else.
Wen Youren said, “Turn around and look at me.”
“No.”
Wen Youren reached out and physically turned Shi Wangui’s body around. “The rehearsals at the auditorium are starting.”
“But look over there. Do you see them?” Shi Wangui pointed toward the couple.
In the next second, her shoulder felt a sudden tingle. Wen Youren gave it a gentle nip and then let go. “Can we go now?”
Shi Wangui was stunned. What was that? Is this part of being a masochist? I was just joking this morning!
“Wen Youren,” Shi Wangui stammered, “You jerk, I am a decent person.”
“I never said you weren’t.”
“Hi there! Excuse me, what class are you in?” A short-haired girl suddenly ran up to them.
Shi Wangui was struck dumb. She did not even know the name of this high school, let alone how many classes it had.
“Grade 11, Class 5,” Wen Youren lied smoothly.
“Hi! We are from Grade 11, Class 1. We were wondering if we could get to know you?” the girl continued.
“Us?” Shi Wangui asked. She only saw the one girl in front of them.
“Well, there is another person who is too shy to come over. Can we add you as friends? We really like you both,” the girl said bashfully.
Wen Youren took Shi Wangui’s hand and smiled. “I am afraid not. Look.” She held up their joined hands.
“Ah! I knew I wasn’t wrong!” The girl’s expression shifted instantly, and another girl who had been hiding in the shadows revealed herself.
As it turned out, they had noticed the two of them from the start. Seeing Shi Wangui leaning naturally against Wen Youren and seeing the ambiguous look in Wen Youren’s eyes, no one would believe they were just ordinary friends.
Shi Wangui felt the misunderstanding was growing out of hand.
“You two match so well. I really want to add you so I can see your lives,” the short-haired girl insisted.
“Okay,” Shi Wangui agreed, and so Wen Youren agreed as well.
The girl who had been hiding earlier had long hair. she seemed to have some social anxiety and did not dare speak to strangers, but now she found her courage. “You aren’t from our school, are you?”
Shi Wangui asked, “Why do you say that?”
Logically, Wen Youren wouldn’t make a mistake like that. She had the key to the school lab, so surely she would know the class divisions.
“Because our grade doesn’t have a Class 5. We only have Classes 1, 2, 3, 4, and then 6 through 10,” both girls said simultaneously.
In the second year of high school, students were divided into liberal arts and science streams. Their school usually had more liberal arts students. The science stream occupied the first five classes, but there weren’t enough students to fill them all, so Class 5 had been dissolved.
Shi Wangui whispered, “Did you not know that? Why did you say Class 5 so confidently?”
Wen Youren whispered back, “It was a guess. I didn’t expect to be so unlucky.”
Shi Wangui thought to herself that her partner was a total blockhead. Who “matched” with her?
Just as they were wondering how to respond, the school bell rang.
“Oh, class is starting! We look forward to seeing you again. You two stay happy, okay? Remember, my name is Zhang Sui, and hers is Li Mengyang,” the short-haired girl said. “By the way, watch out for that middle-aged man with the beer belly on the playground. He is the best at catching students skipping class.”
“Thanks for the tip,” Wen Youren said.
“No problem! Hope to see you next time!” Shi Wangui waved goodbye.
“Little sister, they said we match,” Wen Youren teased once the girls were gone.
“Go away!” Shi Wangui retorted crossly, her eyebrows knitting together. “Who is your little sister? And who matches with you?”
“Didn’t you want to see the performances?” Wen Youren asked.
At the playground entrance, they saw a group of beautifully dressed girls heading in one direction. On the other side of the small lake was the school auditorium. Behind the auditorium was an open space where students were free to rehearse.
“Let’s go.”
Shi Wangui and Wen Youren followed the crowd. Everyone else was wearing colorful, pretty costumes or at least uniform school tracksuits. Only the two of them stood out. One wore a solid black technical jacket set, and the other wore a pink sweatshirt with white jeans. They attracted a lot of attention in the crowd.
“Wen Youren,” Shi Wangui whispered nervously after catching another person staring.
“What is it?”
Shi Wangui looked around. “Do you not feel like we are out of place here?”
Wen Youren did not look around at all. “No.”
“Is your sensory perception broken?” Shi Wangui asked in surprise.
“Classmates, which class are you in? I don’t think I’ve seen you at rehearsals before,” asked a girl in a pink dress who seemed to lead the dance team.
“Grade 11, Class 4. We are a newly added act, a duo dance performance,” Wen Youren said without blinking.
“Is that so?” The girl looked puzzled. Usually, every act had to register with her, but she truly did not remember this one. Perhaps they had just registered and she had been away?
Still, no one would be bold enough to lie to a teacher’s face just to skip class.
“Well, go to the auditorium to rehearse then. All the spots out here are allocated, so I can’t clear a space for you. I’ll unlock the door for you.”
“Thank you then,” Wen Youren said.
“Oh! It’s you guys! You came too,” Zhang Sui called out when she heard the commotion.
“Hello, Zhang Sui,” Shi Wangui smiled.
Seeing that they knew someone, the lead girl believed their story. She opened the auditorium door for them and then led the others to the back.
“You look like such an honest person, yet lies just roll off your tongue,” Shi Wangui said. She pulled a stool from somewhere and stood on it so she could see the rehearsals outside through the window.
Wen Youren sat in a chair, her hands resting casually on the table. “Didn’t you want to watch?”
“It is a pity we can only watch them rehearse.”
Wen Youren pointed to the stage. “Actually, if you want to dance, you can go up there. There is no one else here, and you don’t have to worry about being caught.”
Shi Wangui looked at the stage. A flash of joy crossed her eyes, but the light quickly faded. “Forget it. I don’t know how.”
“Do you remember the first time I noticed you? It was on a stage. You had snuck into the school auditorium and stood in the center. The sunlight covered you and the breeze brushed past. it was wonderful beyond words.”
Shi Wangui asked, “Are you… praising me? I think so?”
“Of course. Do you need me to be your audience?”
Shi Wangui still shook her head. she leaned against the windowsill, watching the girls outside in their costumes performing a synchronized dance. Her eyes were full of envy.
Wen Youren lifted Shi Wangui down from the stool and, ignoring her protests, led her directly onto the stage. She bowed and reached out her hand. “May I have this dance?”
“Not really.” Shi Wangui put her hands on her hips and looked up. “Give me one reason why I should agree.”
“That night…”
“Fine, I agree.”
Alcohol truly ruins things, and emotions even more so.
“What are you going to dance?” Shi Wangui asked.
“I don’t know how to dance.” Wen Youren took the opportunity to grab Shi Wangui’s hands. “But I can move randomly to your rhythm.”
Shi Wangui squeezed Wen Youren’s fingers hard. It was a squeeze of bone against bone, and neither of them gained the upper hand. “Then just move randomly with me.”
Since the other girl didn’t know how to dance, Shi Wangui didn’t do anything too complex. She just swayed casually and spun a few times. Because she was shorter, every time she spun and Wen Youren stood still, she ended up spinning directly into her arms.
It was definitely intentional.
The afternoon sun was at its strongest, shining into the room and making their eyes misty. In the sunlight, they moved their bodies with joyful steps. In this moment, they were the protagonists of their own story and of each other’s.
Wen Youren held Shi Wangui in her arms. They gazed at each other in silence. After a moment, Wen Youren asked, “Are you willing to stay with me for a lifetime?”
Shi Wangui leaned against Wen Youren’s arms, her heartbeat gradually quickening. She spoke, perhaps without even thinking, “I am.”
The teenage years are the most beautiful, a time when one can be remembered for a lifetime even without makeup. Fair skin and rosy lips were their signatures.
Wen Youren tilted her head down slightly, but Shi Wangui turned her head away and pointed behind her. “The camera.”
Even though she didn’t know exactly what Wen Youren intended to do, a reminder never hurt.
They turned around, and Wen Youren’s body completely shielded Shi Wangui. She brushed past her gently and said, “There is another term for this pose.”
“People often call it an ‘implied angle’.”
A moment later, Shi Wangui said, “Wen Youren, I have developed a new kind of affection for you. People usually call it love.”
