Green Tea Top Student Falls in Love with Me - Chapter 20
Shi Wangui returned after being scolded by the homeroom teacher, feeling as though she had aged ten years. She was also somewhat angry because Wen Youren hadn’t warned her that the teacher was nearby. Not only had he failed to alert her, but he had deliberately provoked her truly insane.
Just then, the weather suddenly changed. The wind grew stronger and fiercer. What had previously required only a light jacket to ward off the cold was clearly no longer sufficient. Moreover, the situation seemed to indicate that heavy rain was imminent.
“Wen Youren, are you out of your mind? Why didn’t you tell me the teacher was coming?” Shi Wangui began cursing the moment she returned.
“You came back at just the right time school is about to end.” Wen Youren glanced at his pocket watch; the hands had already reached ten o’clock. “Besides, it’s going to rain soon. I assume you didn’t bring an umbrella. Do you want to go back together?”
“No need!” Shi Wangui looked at the pitch-black sky. “I think I can make it safely to the dorm. As for you, you should worry about whether you’ll be safe once you get back to the dorm.”
Wen Youren chuckled lightly. “I think I’ll be safe.”
The students were quite fortunate, the rain only started half an hour after school ended, by which time most of them had already made it home.
But Shi Wangui happened to have something to attend to. By the time she headed back, the rain was pouring heavily, accompanied by thunder. Luckily, she was brave; otherwise, she would have screamed at the first clap of thunder. Outside, the few lingering students had taken off their uniform jackets to shield themselves from the rain, quickening their pace as they ran back to the dorms.
The rain alone wasn’t so terrifying it was the thunder that made it worse.
When Shi Wangui finally reached the dormitory, the entire hallway was brightly lit, except for their room, which was pitch dark, as if no one lived there. Shi Wangui assumed Wen Youren wasn’t in the dorm and wondered where she had gone off to.
But as she entered the room, she sensed something was wrong. There were sounds coming from inside was Wen Youren in the dorm? Just then, another clap of thunder roared. Shi Wangui immediately switched on the light, but the scene before her startled her.
Wen Youren, who was usually quiet, now had blood all over her exposed arms. The cause? She had been cutting herself with a small knife in her hand. She was curled up in a corner of the room, her outer jacket already removed, leaving only her short-sleeved shirt underneath. Blood dripped from her arms, drop by drop, onto the floor. Yet she seemed oblivious to the pain, continuing to slash at herself with the knife.
“What are you doing!” Shi Wangui hurriedly snatched the knife from Wen Youren’s hand, finally getting a clear look at her condition.
Wen Youren’s eyes were bloodshot, her lips already bitten until they bled. Tears streamed down her pale face, her breathing was labored, and her entire body trembled uncontrollably. She seemed completely disoriented, only snapping back to reality slightly when Shi Wangui took the knife away. She reached out, trying to reclaim the blade, but the injuries on her arms were already severe. Blood stained their clothes and showed no signs of stopping.
Shi Wangui panicked. She stood up and backed away from Wen Youren. Her first instinct was to call the homeroom teacher, but the teacher was far away. By the time the teacher arrived, Wen Youren might have passed out from blood loss. So, she decided to call 120 first and then notify the teacher.
But such a scene was rare. She had seen people bleed this much from being beaten up, but she had never witnessed anyone deliberately cutting themselves with a knife and for no apparent reason at all.
Shi Wangui’s hands trembled as she held the phone, still stained with blood from when she had touched Wen Youren earlier. The smudges left on the screen made it less responsive than usual, and she kept mistyping even simple numbers. If not for her mental fortitude, she might not have been able to hold the phone steady at all.
“Don’t call!” Wen Youren whispered weakly, “Leave me alone.”
“Just shut up,” Shi Wangui retorted, ignoring her. Matters of life and death were for doctors to handle she wouldn’t listen to a madwoman. The call connected quickly, and Shi Wangui relayed the address, floor, and dorm number before hanging up and dialing their homeroom teacher next.
The school wasn’t far from the hospital, so the ambulance arrived swiftly, coinciding with the teacher’s arrival. The teacher had thrown on a black coat over her pajamas and rushed over in slippers.
At the sight of Wen Youren, her legs nearly gave way. Her student looked as if half her vitality had drained away, with bloodstains scattered across the floor. Steeling herself, the teacher helped the medics lift Wen Youren onto a stretcher while they hurriedly administered first aid.
Shi Wangui climbed into the ambulance too. Since she had made the call, she knew she’d be questioned for details later. Besides, as Wen Youren’s only roommate, she was the one who might shed light on why this had happened.
At the hospital, Shi Wangui and the teacher sat on chairs outside the emergency room. Wen Youren, nearly unconscious, had been taken inside for treatment. Fortunately, she had only cut her arms, avoiding her wrists.
“Did something upset Wen Youren today?” the teacher asked cautiously. “Or did something happen in the girls’ dorm involving her?”
“I don’t know. She was like that when I got back, so I called the ambulance,” Shi Wangui replied truthfully.
The teacher patted her head. “You did the right thing. If this happens again, always call the ambulance first, then me.”
Shi Wangui murmured, “Mm.”
She had no idea what had triggered Wen Youren, but the scene had stirred a sudden pang of heartache for her. What could have driven her to this, the blood everywhere, her apparent numbness to pain, so unlike her usual self.
“Family of Wen Youren?” a nurse called out after what felt like an eternity.
The teacher went over immediately, initially motioning for Shi Wangui to stay put, but Shi Wangui, too concerned, followed.
At the doctor’s office, the doctor handed over a form for payment, which the teacher went to settle alone. Shi Wangui remained seated in the consultation room. The female doctor reviewed the chart and finally said, “You mentioned she self-harmed, correct?”
Shi Wangui thought back. “Yes, when I returned, I saw her cutting herself with a knife.”
The doctor tapped on the keyboard. “Her wounds have been treated; they’re mostly superficial. But I recommend taking her to the psychology department. She might be dealing with something major affecting her emotions, leading to this.”
Shi Wangui froze for a few seconds before asking softly, “Doctor, could she have depression? Her mother remarried this year. Could that be why?”
“Can’t rule out that possibility.” The doctor jotted down a few notes. “It would be best if someone could stay with her during this period. Call her mother, she can be taken home and just come back regularly for dressing changes. Try to talk with her if possible, but only if it doesn’t upset her. If there are any signs of psychological issues, make sure to address them promptly. Don’t underestimate it.”
“By the way, that’s your teacher, right? When your teacher arrives, remember to have her come in. I need to speak with her. And be sure to contact her family.”
“Okay!”
But Shi Wangui felt Wen Yiyue wouldn’t come. From her observations, Wen Youren and Wen Yiyue didn’t get along well they hardly spoke, and Wen Youren seemed to avoid engaging with her.
Still, Shi Wangui called Shi Qin.
Ten seconds later, Shi Qin hung up.
Shi Wangui called again, and this time Shi Qin answered. He knew his daughter well enough, if nothing was wrong, she wouldn’t call twice in a row.
“Spit it out,” Shi Qin’s impatient voice came through.
“Wen Youren is in the hospital. The doctor said to notify her family. I don’t have her number, you tell her.”
Silence on the other end for a minute.
“No time. I’ll transfer you some money, you take care of it.”
With that, Shi Qin hung up, and shortly after, Alipay notified her of a 10,000-yuan transfer.
Shi Wangui had expected this, but not the money. When she had been sick before, Shi Qin was often indifferent sometimes giving money, sometimes ignoring her entirely. In the end, it was always her aunt who stepped in.
The homeroom teacher returned from paying the fees and saw Shi Wangui standing by the door. She walked over. “What’s wrong?”
“The doctor said someone from the family should stay with her these days, but her mother doesn’t plan to.” Shi Wangui said it calmly, as though it were the most normal thing.
The teacher’s outstretched hand froze, then relaxed, as if steeling herself. “Then, shall we take turns staying with Wen Youren when we have time?”
Shi Wangui nodded. “Okay.”
She and the teacher went to speak with the doctor again, but the doctor still advised against leaving her alone. If they only visited at night and no one was with her during the day, it would be problematic. They hadn’t yet determined the exact cause of Wen Youren’s condition and could only perform basic wound cleaning and bandaging. Moreover, the hospital was busy during the day, and the nurses and doctors couldn’t guarantee constant attention.
The doctor was also concerned about Wen Youren’s mental state and asked them many questions, but no one had known her for long. The only thing they were sure of was her troubled family relationships.
The homeroom teacher looked troubled and was about to request leave to care for Wen Youren when Shi Wangui spoke up. “I’ll take care of her.”
“No, you have classes,” the teacher refused.
“It’s fine, teacher. I’ll do it. I don’t understand the lessons anyway,” Shi Wangui said, resigning herself.
“Whether you understand or not, you have to go. How will you learn if you don’t listen?”
“It’s alright, teacher. You’re busy too. Wen Youren can tutor me later, she owes me that. Besides, I’m her sister. I’m family too.”
The doctor interjected, “You two discuss it properly. It’s best if someone stays with her.”
In the end, the homeroom teacher compromised but also told Shi Wangui not to spend every day playing around and to study alongside her. She also mentioned she would come check on them after school each day. The main issue was that there were too many students, and with her suddenly taking a week off, the teachers couldn’t adjust the schedule in time. It was all too sudden, and there was no other way.
Shi Wangui stayed overnight at the hospital. Shi Qin had given her a considerable amount of money, and she planned to pocket whatever was left. Wen Youren was already asleep, her arms wrapped in bandages, the bloodstains wiped clean from her body, her lips medicated, and her face still pale.
“You’re really meddlesome.” Shi Wangui muttered softly.
