Green Tea Top Student Falls in Love with Me - Chapter 2
Getting caught in the rain wasn’t entirely without its perks. She caught a cold, which meant she could skip the two days of wedding festivities. She could lie alone in her room, shutting out all the noise from outside, and meals would be brought up to her. She didn’t have to watch the newlyweds being all lovey-dovey.
By Monday, her illness had passed, and the weather had cleared up. The ground was scorched by the blazing sun, with no trace of the earlier rain, and steam seemed to sizzle from the pavement. Shi Wangui had to go back to school, and the night before, Shi Qin had told her to take Wen Youren with her in the morning.
There was no way she would agree to that, so she slipped out at six in the morning to meet up with Sun Yi. Sun Yi had recently started dating a guy from another school. Rumor had it he wasn’t a good person, but Sun Yi wanted her friend to meet him.
“Come on, it’s not like my boyfriend’s going to eat you,” Sun Yi said, noticing the badminton racket slung over Shi Wangui’s shoulder. To those in the know, it looked like she was ready for a fight; to anyone else, it might seem she had gym class later.
Shi Wangui wasn’t particularly tall, but she had studied martial arts as a child and could hold her own if it came to a scuffle. “I heard he’s not a good guy,” she said.
The sun had just risen, casting warm light and shadows across Shi Wangui’s face. A gentle breeze occasionally lifted strands of her long hair, letting them drift freely.
“Hahaha,” Sun Yi laughed. “Ever considered the possibility that I’m not exactly a good person either?”
Truth be told, Shi Wangui and Sun Yi were two of a kind both consistently at the bottom of the class rankings, their names rarely absent from the public reprimand lists. Their teachers lamented their lack of progress, but neither girl had parents who kept a close eye on them. Over time, they’d settled into this state. Still, Sun Yi’s grades were slightly better than Shi Wangui’s.
“No, you’re not like that. You’re a good person,” Shi Wangui said with a smile. “But he isn’t.”
Sun Yi fell silent, instinctively reaching for her pocket but pulling her hand back immediately. Wangui couldn’t stand the smell of smoke, it made her sick.
Shi Wangui didn’t know exactly why she reacted that way to cigarette smoke. It just made her nauseous, though tests showed it wasn’t an allergy. Maybe it was psychological.
“Yiyi.” A boy approached. He was exceptionally tall, a full head taller than Shi Wangui, dressed in a black leather jacket. His pants jangled with every step, his hair was dyed and permed blond, and several earrings glinted in the sunlight.
Sun Yi grabbed the boy’s arm and said cheerfully, “Wangwang, this is my boyfriend, Xu Qingnan.”
Then, turning to Xu Qingnan, she added, “This is my best and most beautiful friend, Shi Wangui. I thought it’d be nice for you two to meet today.”
Shi Wangui sized up Xu Qingnan from head to toe. She didn’t have a great impression of him, but her friend liked him, and she’d heard he’d pursued Sun Yi for quite a while.
Xu Qingnan grinned. “Yiyi, are you sure your friend is here to get to know me? She looks more like she’s here to pick a fight.”
Shi Wangui put away her badminton racket and said expressionlessly, “We have gym class this afternoon. You’ve got the wrong idea.”
You’re not wrong at all. I am here to fight you.
Sun Yi quickly explained, “No way! Let’s go grab some breakfast. Class starts at 7:30.”
It was already six thirty. Shi Wangui was thinking on her way back had Wen Youren gone to school? It would be best if she got lost, couldn’t find the classroom, gave up halfway, dropped out, and disappeared from her sight. What a wonderful plan that would be.
But Shi Wangui was overthinking it. By the time she reached the classroom, Wen Youren was already standing at the podium. Because of the new student’s arrival, the homeroom teacher had also come early.
When the homeroom teacher saw Shi Wangui and Sun Yi arriving just on time, she looked displeased and said sternly, “Come earlier next time. What kind of impression does it give to always arrive at the last minute?”
Although Shi Wangui had a bad temper, she still showed respect to her teachers. “Okay.”
The homeroom teacher didn’t dislike Shi Wangui. Even though she was known as the school bully, that title came from her defeating the previous school bully. Not many knew the reason behind the fight, but after that, it became known that Class Three, Grade One of No. 8 High School had a female school bully.
Seeing that most of the students had arrived, the homeroom teacher stepped onto the podium, clapped her hands, and said, “Class, we have a new student joining us today, Wen Youren. She’s a very well-behaved girl. Let’s give her a round of applause.”
The clichéd introduction didn’t stir much enthusiasm among the students, but Wen Youren’s looks were simply stunning. While the boys remained indifferent, the girls’ applause never stopped.
“So handsome!!!”
“How can a girl be this handsome?!”
“Look at the boys in our class, do any of them come close to this level of handsomeness?”
“…”
“So noisy,” Shi Wangui covered her ears.
What’s so handsome about her? She just has a cool short haircut. If I cut my hair short, I’d definitely be even more handsome than her. And those single eyelids they look so lifeless. My big eyes are way more expressive.
The homeroom teacher glanced around and said sharply, “Quiet, quiet.”
“Wen Youren, you can sit next to Shi Wangui for now. There aren’t any other empty seats, but we’ll adjust later,” she then said to Wen Youren.
“I don’t agree.” As soon as the teacher finished speaking, Shi Wangui voiced her opinion. She wished Wen Youren would disappear from the school, and now she was being told they had to sit together? Even with her respect for teachers, she had to refuse.
The homeroom teacher asked, “Why don’t you agree? There’s only an empty seat next to you. If you don’t agree, where should Wen Youren sit?”
Shi Wangui pointed to the spot next to the podium and said, “Can’t we add a seat there? I’m sure Wen Youren loves studying and would be happy to sit there.”
The homeroom teacher fell silent. That spot was usually reserved for students who misbehaved in class. Making her sit there on her first day would make it seem like she didn’t like her.
“Teacher, I’ll sit there. You can go back to the office,” Wen Youren replied expressionlessly. Then, without waiting for Shi Wangui’s consent, she walked directly to the seat next to her, sat down, placed her backpack inside the desk, and took out the books for the next class.
Shi Wangui: “…”
“Didn’t you hear me? I said I don’t want you here,” Shi Wangui threw her book onto Wen Youren’s desk. “This space is mine too.”
Without even turning her head, Wen Youren flipped through her book, glanced up, and said, “I heard you. If you don’t want to sit here, you can go sit in the front.” Then she threw Shi Wangui’s book back. “If you don’t want it, you can donate it to the mountain regions. They need it more than you do.”
Shi Wangui snapped, “Get lost.”
Wen Youren turned her head at that moment, her expression shifting as she said, “My dear desk mate and potential sister, I think we’ll have many more years to see each other. Let’s cut back on the word ‘get lost,’ because in the future, what we say won’t be ‘get lost’ anymore.”
Sun Yi’s seat was quite far from Shi Wangui’s. She had wanted to check if her good friend was being bullied. While others in the class didn’t know, she was aware that this Wen Youren was Shi Wangui’s stepsister different father, different mother.
“Get lost. Who’s your sister? Don’t forget, they didn’t register their marriage, and we’re not on the same household register,” Shi Wangui retorted.
This had to be mentioned her father’s cunning. He could marry but not register the marriage. He could give Wen Yiyue the life of a wealthy wife, but if they divorced due to issues on the woman’s side, he wouldn’t take responsibility.
Even so, Wen Yiyue still agreed.
Wen Youren closed her book and tapped the desk with her hand. “Class is starting. You should shut up now.”
“? Do you know who you’re talking to? If you don’t understand, I can teach you.”
“I’m talking to my sister who’s not on the same household register.”
“Get lost.”
“You too.”
“…”
A big argument was about to erupt but was interrupted by the ringing of the class bell.
The first period was math class, which was Shi Wangui’s time to catch up on sleep. After all, she couldn’t understand it anyway these numbers didn’t know her, and she didn’t want to know them either.
But this time, she had barely closed her eyes for five minutes when she vaguely noticed Wen Youren raising her hand beside her. Since everyone was wearing school uniforms, and only Wen Youren hadn’t received hers yet, her black sleeves stood out prominently.
“Teacher, someone here is sleeping.”
Shi Wangui: “…”
“Shi Wangui, go stand at the back,” the math teacher said angrily, then noticing Shi Wangui’s empty hands, added, “Take your book with you.”
So, the kind-hearted Wen Youren, without even turning her head, passed the math book over. The book ended up wedged between her and Shi Wangui, leaving Shi Wangui unsure whether to take it or not.
Shi Wangui: “…”
Shi Wangui: “Fuck her.”
Leaving behind a curse, Shi Wangui took the book. There was no need to argue with the teacher during class she didn’t want to learn, but others still needed to.
As soon as class ended, Wen Youren was called to the homeroom teacher’s office. Shi Wangui, clenching her fists, sat on her chair, taking deep breaths.
Sun Yi came over immediately after class. “Holy crap, what’s wrong with her? Why is she so mean? What’s the big deal if you sleep? Did you sleep in her house? Did you disturb her? She’s insane.”
“I think she’s insane,” Shi Wangui said, pounding the desk.
Sun Yi: “We can’t just let her off like this.”
“What do you want to do?” Wang Hu from the front row chimed in. “Are you going to hit her or something?”
The three of them were a tight-knit group, sworn siblings of sorts. But Wang Hu was relatively more obedient he didn’t cause trouble, didn’t seek it out, and his grades were decent, though he only helped them copy homework.
Sun Yi looked at the water in front of Shi Wangui, opened it, and poured it all over Wen Youren’s chair. “She made Wanwan stand for a whole class, so she shouldn’t think about sitting this period.”
The brainless Shi Wangui: “Well done.”
The slightly more thoughtful Wang Hu: “Won’t she just wipe it off?”
Hearing this, Shi Wangui directly took the tissues from Wen Youren’s desk drawer. “Not anymore.”
Wang Hu: “…”
Just then the preparatory bell rang. Sun Yi immediately returned to her seat, and Wang Hu silently turned his head away. Shi Wangui at this moment was like a guilty kitten, tilting her head to conceal her wrongdoing.
Wen Youren returned and noticed the water stain on the stool. She reached into the desk drawer for tissues, only to find there were none left. After a few seconds of silence, she directly took the school uniform jacket draped over Shi Wangui’s chair, wiped the water stain clean, and then tossed it onto Shi Wangui’s desk.
“What are you doing?” Shi Wangui stood up immediately and slapped the desk. She had already been restraining herself, but if she held back any longer, she would lose her reputation as the school bully.
Though she wasn’t quite sure how she had earned that reputation in the first place.
“Childish,” Wen Youren tossed out the two words lightly before sitting down.
“Ding ling ling,” The class bell rang. The homeroom teacher arrived, this was her class.
“What’s going on? Can’t you hear the class bell?” The teacher, seeing Shi Wangui still standing, picked up her portable microphone and said, “Get your Chinese textbooks ready within one minute and open to the page we studied last time.”
Shi Wangui sat down and took out her Chinese textbook, but that didn’t mean she forgave Wen Youren. Since she couldn’t talk during class, she opted to pass a note.
[Don’t leave after school.]
Wen Youren glanced at it, then paused her gaze. Although Shi Wangui was as childish as a kid, her handwriting was quite nice. It had a certain flair, slightly cursive, yet every character was clear.
Wen Youren quickly wrote two words and passed the note back.
[Childish.]
Shi Wangui crumpled the note tightly. She didn’t dare cause a scene during class, and she didn’t want to stay after school. Fine, she’d just wait until they got home.
