Green Tea Top Student Falls in Love with Me - Chapter 10
Shi Wangui took the medicine prescribed by the doctor and fell asleep. This time, she slept even longer, right through the evening self-study session. She couldn’t help but marvel at herself, how was she able to sleep so soundly at night? Would she end up staying up all night on her phone later?
But what truly shocked Shi Wangui wasn’t how long she had slept, but the fact that Liang Jie came to apologize. Led by the homeroom teachers of both classes, Liang Jie, her face flushed, said to Shi Wangui, “I’m sorry, Shi Wangui. I found the money, I had taken it to the classroom and forgotten about it. I apologize for the harm I caused you.”
Shi Wangui didn’t want to respond, but the homeroom teacher was there, staring sternly at Liang Jie, and a crowd of students had gathered outside the door to watch the scene unfold.
Life was truly unpredictable. The twists and turns of each day moved faster than she could finish a meal.
Shi Wangui replied indifferently, “Whatever.” Then she lay back down and fell asleep again.
Secretly, she felt relieved that she hadn’t taken out her phone earlier. Although she wasn’t afraid of the homeroom teacher, the teacher’s habit of confiscating phones was all too real.
The homeroom teacher, understanding that Shi Wangui was still unwell, simply said, “I’ve applied for separate dormitory rooms for you and Wen Youren. Once you’re feeling better, I’ll ask some boys from the class to help you move.”
Shi Wangui responded just as indifferently, “Okay.” But inwardly, she was overjoyed. She had never wanted to share a dorm with so many people. Ideally, she would have a room to herself. Though Wen Youren was always studying, it wouldn’t really bother her, she could just treat her as part of the background.
Though she didn’t know how the situation had turned around, as soon as the teacher left, Wang Yu Yuan remarked, “Are you satisfied now? I really look down on you. What else do you know besides using force? You’ll never have a bright future.”
Shi Wangui usually didn’t bother with mindless girls like Wang Yu Yuan, but what did she mean by “using force”?
Was it Sun Yi? Had Sun Yi confronted them? Perhaps it had been a fortunate mistake, Sun Yi might have intended to teach them a lesson but ended up discovering that the money had been found, inadvertently clearing Shi Wangui’s name.
Ignoring Wang Yu Yuan, Shi Wangui took out her phone and sent a message to Sun Yi now that the teacher was gone.
[Shi Wangui: Thanks.]
No matter what, her friend had only been trying to help. Thankfully, no one had reported them.
[Seventh Year: ? Are you still delirious from the fever? Get some rest.]
[Shi Wangui: Okay.]
But after sleeping all day, how could Shi Wangui possibly fall asleep again? Her fever had mostly subsided. She rarely got sick, so her body’s recovery ability was fairly good.
Late at night, Shi Wangui quietly slipped out of bed, threw on a thick coat, grabbed her phone, and left the dorm.
The air inside was stifling, and she desperately needed some fresh air. However, the dormitory building was locked, and the corridor windows were sealed shut. Shi Wangui had no choice but to head to that bench again.
To her surprise, Wen Youren was there too. This top student, who usually couldn’t survive without her homework, was now typing away on her phone.
Could she be in a secret romance?
As Shi Wangui approached, Wen Youren noticed her and spoke first, “Are you feeling better now?”
She instinctively wanted to retort, but the words died on her lips. There was really no reason to argue after all, the other person had helped her a great deal during her illness.
“Mm,” Shi Wanghui replied, “thanks to myself.”
The two of them sat on opposite ends of a bench, each absorbed in their own phones.
In the end, it was Shi Wanghui who couldn’t resist breaking the silence. “Why did you tell the doctor you were my sister?”
Wen Youren chuckled softly. “Can’t I say that?”
Shi Wanghui raised her voice. “No, you can’t!”
Wen Youren: “I already said it.”
Shi Wanghui muttered under her breath, “Then don’t say it again in the future.”
Wen Youren didn’t catch it. “What?”
Shi Wangui repeated, more fiercely this time, “I said, don’t say it again when we’re outside.”
Wen Youren laughed. “How childish.”
Shi Wangui: “You!”
“By the way, why did you take care of me?” Shi Wangui asked again. “We’re not exactly close, are we? In fact, I’d say our relationship is pretty bad.”
Wen Youren set her phone down and spoke slowly, “I was afraid you’d die.”
Shi Wangui: “Can you ever say anything nice?”
Wen Youren let out a light laugh, then said, “Shi Wangui, we shouldn’t be enemies.”
Shi Wangui also put her phone down. She had thought about it before, she hated Shi Qin and Wen Yiyue, but they were in a relationship of their own free will. She hated Wen Youren because Wen Youren was Wen Yiyue’s daughter, but wasn’t Wen Youren in the same boat as her?
So she stubbornly retorted, “I don’t see you as an enemy. I just dislike you.”
Wen Youren smiled. “Really? Then, considering I cleared your name, maybe you don’t have to dislike me anymore?”
“Cleared my name?” Shi Wangui was puzzled. “Was it you who handled the Liang Jie situation? Did you hit them?”
Wen Youren picked up her phone again, replied to a message, and said, “I’m not into fighting. I just happened to overhear what they were saying and recorded it by chance.”
Shi Wangui fell silent for a few seconds, then said flatly, “Oh!”
Wen Youren stood up and put on her coat. “I think we should be strangers, but not enemies.” With that, Wen Youren left, leaving Shi Wangui alone on the bench.
Shi Wangui pondered this. Yes, they would only ever be strangers. Life after eighteen was the start of her new beginning there was no need to harbor such strong resentment toward someone who shared a similar plight.
So, in that moment, Shi Wangui revised her rating of Wen Youren: zero points.
–
Shi Wangui recovered from her illness after a few days. They spent a relatively uneventful week, except that exams were becoming more frequent. It turned out the first two months had just been the teachers going easy on them to help them adjust.
She used to have no particular feelings about exams, but now she had a deskmate who was making the entire grade aware of her, one subject at a time.
How could someone be that strong?
Still, there were weaknesses. Wen Youren wasn’t very good at sports. She looked tall and sturdy, and people said she was impressive, but when it came to running, she was among the slowest in the class. This made Shi Wangui happy because she herself excelled in sports.
“Quiet, quiet.” The homeroom teacher stood at the podium, clapping her hands a few times. After the class had completely settled down, she said, “The sports meet is tomorrow, and our class has quite a few athletic students. Class representative, since you speak Mandarin well, you’ll be responsible for cheering them on from the stage. Sports committee, you’ll lead the team. And class monitor, after the event, organize the students to collect the water bottles from the grounds. As we agreed earlier, participation is voluntary, and any money you make from selling the bottles you collect is yours to keep.”
“Do you still remember our slogan?”
The students joked, “Competition first! Friendship second.”
“Right!” The teacher suddenly caught on. “What nonsense is this? You’ve got it all backwards. It’s competition second, friendship first. Remember, no competition is more important than your well-being. Just do your best.”
“Hahahaha.”
With the break approaching, the classroom atmosphere was livelier than usual. The students laughed freely. The school hadn’t taken up their weekend, scheduling the sports meet for Thursday and Friday instead, which meant everyone got a four-day break. However, only first and second-year students usually participated in the sports meet, while third-year students were mostly busy with classes.
Wang Hu turned around and asked, “Shi Wangui, don’t forget later. I’m short on cash lately and need to save up to buy a gift.”
Thump. Sun Yi, who had seemingly appeared out of nowhere, asked, “What gift? Are you chasing after a girl?”
Wang Hu chuckled, “It’s a secret. I plan to express my sincere affection to her on Christmas Eve.”
Shi Wangui laughed, “Sincere affection, huh?”
Sun Yi chimed in, “Christmas Eve is also Wanwan’s birthday. Wanwan, is there anything you want?”
Wang Hu slapped his forehead. “I totally forgot! That means I need to save up for two gifts now. Say no more, I’ll be collecting bottles for two days straight.”
Shi Wangui replied, “It’s fine. I’ll appreciate anything you give me.”
She was also running low on living expenses lately and needed to figure out a way to earn some money. Otherwise, if that scoundrel Shi Qin really withheld her allowance, she’d have to starve until the New Year.
But the school had been cracking down lately, strictly prohibiting incidents like bullying. Shi Wangui hoped it would stay that way, so she had to find another method. Collecting bottles would only earn her ten or twenty yuan at most, enough to cover three days of meals. With just over a hundred yuan left to her name and having paid for her school uniform out of pocket, she was truly in a tight spot.
It’s tough when even a small amount of money becomes an obstacle, but being underage, there weren’t many ways to earn an income.
While the class was still buzzing, the homeroom teacher returned, holding a few sheets of paper. She tapped the desk and announced, “After the sports meet, we’ll have midterm exams. Study hard and show me the effort you’ve put in over the past two months.”
“Aww!” Groans of dismay echoed through the classroom.
The teacher handed the seating chart to the class monitor and added, “Seating is based on last month’s exam results. If you missed that exam, you’ll have to sit in the last seat. I hope not to see any of our students in Classroom 20 during the next exams.”
Typically, each exam room seated thirty students, and Classroom 20 represented the bottom thirty in the grade. Her remark was a pointed reference to Shi Wangui.
Sun Yi’s grades were slightly better, she was in Classroom 19.
As soon the homeroom teacher left, Wang Hu grinned and said, “Shi Wangui, he was talking about you, right? Do you think you’ll still be in Class 20 next time?”
Shi Wangui kicked Wang Hu and snapped, “Get lost.”
Just then, the seating chart made its way to their desk. Shi Wangui didn’t even need to look, she was sure she’d be in the last seat. But then she remembered the teacher saying that those without midterm exam scores would be placed last. She had taken the last exam, so maybe it wasn’t her?
She glanced at the last sheet of the seating chart: Wen Youren was in the very last seat, and Shi Wangui was second to last.
That made sense. Wen Youren had just transferred in and had no exam scores, so she had to sit there.
Still, this lifted Shi Wangui’s spirits. Earlier, they had agreed not to be enemies but to act like strangers. Yet, Shi Wangui couldn’t help but feel a subconscious urge to compete with Wen Youren. Now, with her exam seat placed ahead of Wen Youren’s, she couldn’t help but feel pleased.
As for the future, she’d worry about that later. For now, she’d take this small victory as it came.
